Facing flak, US network turns game show ‘The Activist’ with PC into documentary

After becoming a target of online criticism, series ‘The Activist’, which stars Indian actress Priyanka Chopra Jonas among many others is being reconfigured and will now become a one-time documentary special instead of a five-episode competition series.

Although footage for the original incarnation of the series had already been shot, this version of ‘The Activist’ will be entirely new, with filming expected to begin from scratch, reports variety.com.

The show, originally set to premiere as a series on October 22, had faced serious heat since Usher, Julianne Hough and Priyanka were announced as hosts late last week.

Social media users and opinion writers had laid into the competitive nature of a show meant to celebrate and encourage activism, among other concerns.

In a joint statement, network CBS and producing partners Global Citizen and Live Nation announced the format switch, saying: “‘The Activist’ was designed to show a wide audience the passion, long hours, and ingenuity that activists put into changing the world, hopefully inspiring others to do the same.

“However, it has become apparent the format of the show as announced distracts from the vital work these incredible activists do in their communities every day. The push for global change is not a competition and requires a global effort.

“As a result, we are changing the format to remove the competitive element and reimagining the concept into a primetime documentary special (air date to be announced).”

It added: “t will showcase the tireless work of six activists and the impact they have advocating for causes they deeply believe in. Each activist will be awarded a cash grant for the organization of their choice, as was planned for the original show.”

The joint statement concludes by saying that the activists and community leaders around the world work every day, often without fanfare, to advance protections for people, communities, and our planet.

“We hope that by showcasing their work we will inspire more people to become more involved in addressing the world’s most pressing issues. We look forward to highlighting the mission and lives of each of these incredible people.”

Global Citizen released its own separate statement that included an apology.

“Global activism centers on collaboration and cooperation, not competition. We apologize to the activists, hosts, and the larger activist community a” we got it wrong,” the philanthropic org said.

“It is our responsibility to use this platform in the most effective way to realize change and elevate the incredible activists dedicating their lives to progress all around the world.”

The concept for ‘The Activist’ had been announced in May but, with no celebrity names attached, drew almost no notice at the time

The details about the show hadn’t changed when the hosts were announced last week, but this time, it got the spotlight with the competitive aspect provoking ire and accusations that the use of social media metrics in judging the winners amounted to a celebration of “click-tivism”.

The format for the series had six activists representing three causes — health, education and environment — completing challenges to raise awareness about those issues during the initial four episodes.

For the fifth and final episode, three of the six activists were to have been chosen (one representing each area) to go to the G20 summit in Rome at the end of October and meet with world leaders to personally press their causes.

Performances from well-known musicians also would have figured into the climactic episode.

The documentary version is expected to focus on the same activists but without the “challenges” or evaluations.

Representatives for the network and producing entities declined to address creative aspects of the show’s reconfiguration, indicating that practical matters of restarting production with a more straight-forward documentary concept would be addressed after the initial word gets out that critics of ‘The Activist’ have been heard.

Hough had already addressed the show’s growing legion of detractors, posting a four-part message to her Instagram account.

‘Haathi Mere Saathi’ actress Shriya Pilgaonkar seeks harmony with nature

Actress Shriya Pilgaonkar says her film ‘Haathi Mere Saathi’ has an important and incredibly relevant story to tell. It explores the delicate relationship shared between humans and the wild.

She says: “For the ecosystem to survive, there has to be a harmonious balance. Us humans have already destroyed a lot of the planet but nature is God and God is nature. This was my first experience shooting in an actual rainforest and just being disconnected with no network was enough to get into the full feel of the film and what this story stands for.”

Shriya is playing the role of ‘Arundhati’, on the question how she relates with her character, she says ‘Arundhati’ always actively seeks the truth and fights for it. “She is someone who can’t be silenced. Personally, I think courage in one’s life needs to be constantly worked upon in various areas of our life and sometimes the characters I play give me that courage to become the person I seek to be.”

Directed by Prabu Solomon, the film talks about the strong bond between humans and animals. The film stars Rana Daggubati, Pulkit Samrat, Shriya Pilgaonkar, Zoya Hussain and Anant Mahadevan.

Shriya further shares her working experience with Rana Daggubati who is playing the role of ‘Bandev’ in the movie. While talking about him she says: “When I first saw Rana Daggubati as ‘Bandev’ I couldn’t recognise him. His transformation into the character was so seamless and surreal.”

Nature thrived during lockdown and Shriya strongly feels about it. “This lockdown we all thrived to be better, we looked inwards to rebuild ourselves. Nature did the same. It had time to heal. Nature bloomed once it was least interrupted, it gave us hope for a healthier tomorrow,” she says.

Shriya will soon be doing a legal drama and other comedy projects. However, she has not opened up about them. “I have some exciting projects coming up which haven’t been officially announced yet. One is a legal drama and the other is a quirky comedy. I also have the second Season of ‘Gone Game’ and ‘Crackdown’ along with a film in the pipeline,” concludes Shriya.

‘Haathi Mere Saathi’ will have a Direct-to-TV release on Zee Cinema on September 18.

Leslie Grace reveals how she found out she was ‘Batgirl’

Actress Leslie Grace has revealed how she found out that she’d been cast as Barbara Gordon in ‘Batgirl’, the upcoming superhero film.

The ‘In the Heights’ star was asked by the filmmakers to jump on a last-minute Zoom for a final casting test before being directed to read the text of an email they had just sent her, reports variety.com.

“I open it and it says, ‘I’m Batgirl’…and my brain broke,” Grace said at the MTV VMAs on Sunday at Barclays Center in New York.

She said, “It was an incredible moment. When I mean incredible, I mean the textbook definition of, I could not believe it. My brain actually broke when I got the news.”

Grace immediately got to work by reading as many comics as she could.

“That was my first question – what do I read? I’m like, ‘Send me everything I need to learn.’ I just bought every comic and just starting asking so many questions.”

She can’t reveal the film’s storyline or if any of her Batman counterparts like Robert Pattinson and Ben Affleck will be popping up in her movie.

“But I will tell you this, Batgirl is a badass. She’s definitely going to be fighting lots of people. She’ll be very hands-on. She’s got a lot to prove.”

The actress hopes young fans will be inspired by a Latina Batgirl and that her work “validates the dreams of other people who look like me, who may feel it’s not an opportunity for them. I’m just really excited about every young girl who is going to see a Dominican Batichica and say, ‘I can do that,'” she said. “I can’t wait.”

It was announced in July that Grace had bagged the title role.

Filming is expected to begin in November.
