IIT Madras Tech Generates Electricity from Tidal & Wind Sources:

Researchers at the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Madras have created an innovative power generation technology capable of harnessing both tidal and wind energy sources. This technology takes the form of an energy converter system designed to produce electricity in coastal regions, reducing the local demand for power.

It can be utilized as a mobile unit for generating, transmitting, and storing electricity according to the specific needs of a coastal area. The system incorporates a wind turbine mounted on a vehicle’s roof, which effectively captures wind energy and converts tidal energy into electrical power. The resulting energy output is entirely renewable and sustainable, and the vehicle’s roof may also feature solar panels to support other onboard equipment.

This groundbreaking technology is anticipated to offer cost-efficiency, reduced maintenance requirements, and a clean, sustainable energy source. Its mobility adds to its versatility, making it a valuable asset for various applications. The technology’s potential industry partners include companies in the power sector, solar, and wind energy, opening up new opportunities in clean energy generation. The energy converter operates with a vertical-axis wind turbine and a horizontal converter mechanism, eliminating the need for hydraulic set generators based on pendulum support.

It offers height-adjustable guider support mechanisms to regulate the height of the elliptical plate attached to the primary shaft, all while avoiding the corrosion issues associated with offshore systems. This innovative converter is designed for remote control and adaptability to different positions based on wave height and power generation needs.

Online Classes Over Dasara Holidays Due to Rain Disruptions

Online Classes Over Dasara Holidays Due to Rain Disruptions:

Due to heavy rainfall causing disruptions in regular school schedules throughout July and August, schools are turning to online classes over the upcoming Dasara vacation to prevent students from falling behind in their studies. The Dasara vacation in the state is scheduled for October 13-25.

Some schools are considering conducting short online classes lasting one to two hours until October 18. Prolonged rainfall led to the cancellation and interruption of physical classes, which raised concerns among teachers and students regarding its impact on the academic calendar. For students finishing board exams on October 12, online classes will be extended by up to five additional days. Meanwhile, CBSE and ICSE students have already begun their classes.

The decision to conduct online classes is driven by the need to complete the curriculum for the second term before the first week of December. A mere 50 days is insufficient since there is also a need to cover missed units from the previous term, as explained by Prasanna Kumari, principal of a private school in Vidyanagar. Gayatri P.G., another teacher, emphasized the importance of adequately preparing students for various assessments and unit tests, as any further delays could affect their performance.

Ramya Sri, a member of a parents’ association, acknowledged the challenge of her 6th grader completing all units and suggested that while students shouldn’t be forced into attending online classes during the holidays, these classes could help them catch up and stay on track for exams. She believes the decision should be left to the students and parents.

Sushma Pandiri, a teacher at a local school, reassured parents and students that the online sessions would not involve additional homework. Their primary goal is to ensure students can cover the chapters and units disrupted by the rains without overburdening them with extra assignments during this period.

On the other hand, students expressed their dislike for online classes and preferred the option of additional in-person classes or skipping physical education classes to make up for the missed curriculum.

Telangana Teachers Stage Protest Demanding Expedited Spousal Transfers:

Teachers and staff protested in front of Pragathi Bhavan on Sunday, demanding the immediate implementation of promised “spouse transfers.” Several women, hailing from various districts, were detained until 9.30 pm during the demonstration.

“We put our kids at the house and don’t have access to return home within time. My son is unwell. We came here to advocate for a cause, and our treatment feels inhumane. There are no restroom facilities or access to water here. Is this the way they treat women here?” questioned one protester.

Another participant vowed not to back down until Education Minister Sabitha Indra Reddy addressed their grievances, referring to their current situation as “torture.”

According to the demonstrators, the government’s actions have separated over 80,000 couples by assigning them to different districts, leaving them unable to care for their children, parents, or families. Most of the political Leaders were given assurance of spouse transfers, but they failed to provide those promises.

There has been a deliberate lack of action in lifting the High Court’s imposed stay order,” noted Harinakshi P, a teacher. “It’s disheartening that these teachers and employees have been making requests to the government for the past two years, only to be disregarded,” added Chava Ravi, General Secretary of the Telangana State United Teachers Federation (TSUTF).”

KU Denies Irregularities in PhD Admissions:

Deans from multiple departments at Kakatiya University (KU) issued a joint statement in Hanamkonda, refuting allegations of irregularities in Ph.D. admissions. They asserted that the Ph.D. category-II admissions process was conducted transparently, adhering to reservation rules and merit criteria. The entrance exam key was publicly posted on Kakatiya University’s website for review and recommendations.

To maintain fairness and transparency, the interview process was recorded for the first time in the university’s history. Selection committees, consisting of experienced faculty members representing various categories, including SC, ST, BC, women, and differently-abled individuals, were formed.

However, some candidates who did not meet merit or reservation requirements allegedly made unfounded claims, engaged in disruptive behavior, and sought improper admissions. Some political party leaders reportedly joined forces with these candidates to exert pressure on authorities in an inappropriate manner.

Modi Cabinet Approves Women’s Reservation Bill

Modi Cabinet Approves Women’s Reservation Bill:

In a momentous decision, the Union Cabinet, on Monday, approved the Women’s Reservation Bill (WRB).

Prahlad Patel, the Minister of State for Food Processing Industries, and Jal Shakti confirmed this significant development on a social media platform but later deleted the post.

He had originally posted, “Only the Modi government had the moral courage to meet the demand for women’s reservation, as demonstrated by the cabinet’s approval. Kudos to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and accolades to the Modi government.”

The Constitution Amendment Bill aims to allocate one-third (33 percent) of the total seats in state legislative Assemblies and Parliament for women. The bill also suggests a sub-reservation within the 33 percent quota for SCs and STs. These reserved seats may be rotated among different constituencies in the state or union territory.

Reacting to this development, senior Congress leader Jairam Ramesh posted on social media, “The Congress party has long advocated for the implementation of women’s reservation. We appreciate the news of the Union Cabinet’s decision and are looking forward to the specifics of the Bill. It would have been beneficial if this matter had been deliberated in an all-party meeting prior to the Special Session, allowing for the formation of a consensus rather than operating in a secretive manner.”

Numerous governments, including those led by Rajiv Gandhi, Deve Gowda, Atal Behari Vajpayee, and Manmohan Singh, had attempted to pass a law on women’s reservation but faced strong opposition from parties in Uttar Pradesh and Bihar.

While most of their bills expired without becoming law, the Manmohan Singh government introduced the Bill in the Rajya Sabha on May 6, 2008, to prevent it from lapsing.

The Rajya Sabha approved the Bill on March 9, 2010, with 186 votes in favor and one opposing it. However, the Bill was not taken up in the Lok Sabha before its term ended. It’s worth noting that Bills passed in the Rajya Sabha do not expire.
