‘Mafia’ actress Anindita Bose: ‘My idea is to go with the flow’

Anindita Bose, who plays a pivotal role in the new web series “Mafia”, says being a Mumbai girl she has to float between the city and Kolkata to maintain her space as an actor in the Bengali entertainment industry.

“I would say I am floating in between Mumbai and Kolkata. I was born and brought up in Mumbai, and after finishing my education I went to Kolkata and started my career as an actor. I have got a huge response. The people of Kolkata have accepted me and they made me the celebrity that I am today. How can I not reciprocate to their love? But my heart is in Mumbai! Mumbai is home. Having said that, last year I bought my first property in Kolkata because I know that no matter where I travel, I would like to return to this city. So, my heart is in Mumbai, the mind is in Kolkata,” Anindita told IANS.

Starting her career in 2010 with the show “Gaaner Oparey”, her notable roles have been in films like “Clerk”, “Bhooter Bhabishyat”, “Hemlock Society”, “Cakewalk”, “Shotoroi September”.

“It is great to notice how even the Bengali audience is becoming receptive to digital content. There are Bengali language web series that have become popular. These mostly cater to the youth here and surely more experimental work will be happening,” added the actress.

Anindita has also appeared in Hindi web series like “Paatal Lok”, “Skyfire” and “Thinkistan”, before “Mafia”.

Is she planning to step into the world of Bollywood? “When I started my career, I never planned it. So my idea is to go with the flow and take baby steps. Bollywood is a bigger goal. Over the past three years, a transition has happened with so many OTT platforms making web shows with actors from every region. I also auditioned for a couple of them. I got rejected by some. I was a part of a few shows before my major role in ‘Mafia’. Hopefully, more projects will come on my way after this show,” said Anindita.

The Zee5 show “Mafia” also features Namit Das, Tanmay Dhanania, Isha M Saha, and Madhurima Roy.

Regina King on doing socially relevant yet entertaining work

Oscar-winning actress Regina King says it is always an honor to be part of a piece of work that is entertaining and socially relevant.

She cites that as the reason for being part of the television series “Watchmen”.

“It’s definitely an honor to be able to have been a part of a piece of work that was entertaining but also socially relevant,” Regina said.

“Prior to ‘Watchmen’ I had done ‘Seven Seconds’ and ‘American Crime’, and both of those shows had commentary rooted in them, around the things that are going on in our country right now. With ‘Watchmen’, it was unique because (creator) Damon (Lindelof) and the entire writing team were able to give a history lesson, infuse a bit of love story in there, shine a light on how pain is inherited, a light on police violence in our country. To do all of these things and be entertaining at the same time, and also have comedic moments, it feels like I was a part of something that’s never been done before,” she added.

With “Watchmen”, Damon Lindelof brings to life a series that embraces the nostalgia of the original graphic novel of the same name. Also starring Jeremy Irons, Don Johnson, Louis Gossett Jr., and Tim Blake Nelson, “Watchmen” explores the complexities of society while examining different real issues across time periods.

The series takes place in an alternate contemporary reality in the US, wherein superheroes and masked vigilantes were outlawed due to their violent methods, but some of them gather around to start a revolution while others attempt to stop it. It questions the notion of heroes and tries to connect the dots between a fictional take of real events.

Her character in the show, Sister Knight, has a mask on — which has found a new meaning in the post-COVID-19 era.

“So Patti sent me that picture of me wearing the mask and said to me ‘who knew that your costume was going to be our grocery store attire’. And I do step out for groceries. It is funny because of ‘Watchmen’ coming out not too long ago, people are looking for my eyes so I feel like I am being recognized even more now in the store with the mask on,” she said while opening up on the show that aired in India on Star World.

Aayaam Mehta relives personal situation while shooting for ‘Qurbaan Hua’

Actor Aayaam Mehta says he remembered his late father while enacting a death sequence in the TV show “Qurbaan Hua”.

“Our work and talent at times require us to literally step into the shoes of our character to be able to enact that one scene that would overwhelm our viewers,” said Aayaam.

“We recently shot a sequence in the show where my daughter Saraswati passes away and as her father, I am emotionally hit but being in a state of shock, my character freezes and is not able to channel his tears and express grief. The scene required an authentic emotion and at that moment I connected it to the time when I was a kid and I had lost my father,” he added.

Just like his character, he was emotionally blocked and unable to express it. Recalling that difficult time helped him bring out the sincerity required for that scene in a better manner.

Aayaam said: “At times, we might not be able to connect difficult sequences with our lives, but you still have to imagine that such a tragedy has happened to you and then the true emotions come out. Having said that, as actors we have to learn to not let ourselves get carried away, else it can affect you personally. It important to have a sense of awareness that those emotions are just for a scene.”

“Qurbaan Hua” is returning with fresh episodes on Zee TV on July 13.
