Advanced MicroRNA Treatment Strategy Seeks to Prolong Tumor Growth:

Researchers from Purdue University have unveiled a novel therapy designed to target cancer cells by utilizing a modified form of microRNA that naturally inhibits cell division, thereby slowing down tumor growth.

This groundbreaking therapy is engineered to deceive cancer cells into absorbing a segment of RNA that naturally obstructs cell division. In a 21-day study, tumors treated with this new therapy displayed no increase in size, whereas untreated tumors tripled in size during the same period, according to findings published in the journal Oncogene.

Lead author Andrea Kasinski, an Associate Professor of biological sciences at Purdue University, described the therapy as a combination of a delivery system that homes in on cancer cells and a modified version of microRNA-34a, a molecule likened to the brakes in a car that can slow down or halt cell division.

The targeted microRNA-34a exhibited robust suppression of the activity of at least three genes—MET, CD44, and AXL—which are known drivers of cancer and contributors to resistance against other cancer treatments. This sustained suppression lasted for a minimum of 120 hours.

The results suggest that this therapy may be effective on its own and in conjunction with existing drugs, particularly in cases where cancer has developed resistance to conventional treatments.

The precision of this therapy means that a smaller quantity of the compound is required for effectiveness, potentially reducing the risk of toxicity, side effects, and overall cost.

The research team is also working on developing a separate version of the therapy, targeting a different cell surface receptor, specifically designed for prostate cancer cells that lack excessive folate receptors.

India’s Moon Lander and Rover Enter Sleep Mode:

After successfully performing a hop maneuver, India’s lunar lander Vikram was placed into sleep mode, according to the Indian space agency.

The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) reported, “Vikram Lander entered sleep mode at approximately 08:00 Hrs. IST today. Prior to that, in-situ experiments were conducted by ChaSTE, RAMBHA-LP, and ILSA payloads at the new location. The collected data has been transmitted to Earth, and the payloads have been powered off. The lander’s receivers, however, remain operational.”

ISRO further stated, “Vikram will enter sleep mode alongside Pragyan (the moon rover) once its solar power is depleted and its battery drained, with hopes for their reawakening around September 22, 2023.”

Previously, ISRO had confirmed Vikram’s soft landing on the lunar surface for the second time.

ISRO shared on its platform, “Vikram Lander successfully completed its mission objectives, including a successful hop experiment. It fired its engines as commanded, achieved an expected elevation of about 40 cm, and safely landed at a distance of 30 to 40 cm.”

According to the space agency, this achievement is a promising step towards future lunar sample return missions and human missions to the moon.

ISRO stated that all systems performed as anticipated and are in excellent condition. The deployed Ramp, ChaSTE, and ILSA were successfully folded back and redeployed after the experiment.”

Previously, ISRO had shared a video on the social media platform, X, showing the moon rover Pragyan in motion, likening it to a child playing joyfully while being watched by its mother.

On September 2, ISRO placed the 26 kg moon rover Pragyan into sleep mode, stating that it had completed its assigned tasks. The rover is safely parked, with its APXS and LIBS payloads turned off. Data from Payloads Transmitted to Earth through Lander. The rover’s battery is fully charged, and its solar panel is oriented to receive sunlight at the next sunrise, expected on September 22, 2023. The receiver remains active, with hopes for a successful reawakening for further tasks. Alternatively, it will stay on the moon, serving as India’s lunar representative.

ISRO plans to wake up both the lander and the rover with a ‘Suprabhatam’ (Sanskrit morning prayer to awaken Lord Venkateswara in Tirupati) or a wake-up call on September 22.

Aditya-L1 Mission Sparks Student Interest in Solar Studies

0
Aditya-L1 Mission Sparks Student Interest in Solar Studies:

In the aftermath of Chandrayaan-3‘s ongoing lunar discoveries, educational institutions are once again witnessing a resurgence of scientific curiosity. However, this time, the object of fascination is not the Moon but rather the Sun, capturing the imagination of both students and educators alike.

The buzz surrounding the Aditya-L1 mission, India’s ambitious endeavor to study the Sun from close proximity, has ignited a blaze of enthusiasm within schools and colleges.

This fervor stands as a testament to the enduring impact of visionaries like Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam, who continues to inspire generations toward scientific inquiry and exploration, according to some educators.

The enduring legacy of Dr. Kalam has played a crucial role in nurturing a passionate fascination with space and technology among the younger generation. His wisdom has instilled the belief that no dream is too grand, and every challenge is surmountable. This mindset serves as the ideal launching pad as India consistently achieves new scientific milestones,” noted Pavitra Jadhav Naik, a science teacher at a private school.

Reflecting on the impact of these achievements on young minds, physics professor Santosh B. stated,
Our classrooms have evolved into centers of discussion where we delve into the enigmas of the Sun. It’s heartwarming to witness students so deeply inspired.”

Roma K.J.D., a student, expressed that Chandrayaan was just the beginning, emphasizing that Aditya-L1 marks a significant leap for India.

The prospect of a satellite investigating the Sun’s corona from an advantageous location in space is undeniably fascinating. It’s akin to unraveling all the intricacies surrounding the core of our solar system,” she enthused.

English teacher Ali Mahmood highlighted the ‘interdisciplinary impact’ of such missions on education, emphasizing that the discussions have transcended science classrooms. Students are now composing essays on the Sun’s symbolic significance in literature, and its role in shaping mythologies is being explored.

He further noted that this achievement would serve as a fitting tribute to inspirational figures like Dr. Kalam, Jawaharlal Nehru, Homi J. Bhabha, and Vikram Sarabhai, among others, who were pioneers in their own right.

Kartikeya Reddy, a general science teacher, noted that as the mission draws nearer to its September 2 launch date, the anticipation surrounding Aditya-L1 is not merely fleeting; it represents a spark with the potential to illuminate the path for the upcoming generation of scientists, engineers, and visionaries.
