Livespace which is a home interior design and home modeling did lay off nearly 100 manpower in order to decrease human sources and costs in the company, according to the media.

According to a report in leading startups coverage portal Inc42, the layoffs impacted 2 percent of Livspace’s workforce, affecting product, engineering, content, and marketing teams.

The company said in a statement that “we will, in the normal course of our operations, redeploy resources”.

“This is organic and a reflection of normal adjustments and/or performance management parameters,” it said, adding that the business has more than doubled over the past year and it aims to turn profitable in the coming year.

Livspace had sacked 450 employees during the first wave of the Covid pandemic.

In October last year, the company earmarked $100 million to invest and incubate new offerings and brands in the direct-to-consumer (D2C) market in the home interiors and renovation segment.

Singapore-based Livspace said it aims to create multiple home interiors and renovation solutions and D2C offerings that serve homeowners across various segments in its markets across India, Southeast Asia, and the Middle East region.

“As we continue to scale across new segments in existing geographies and enter new regional markets, we are looking for successful businesses and like-minded entrepreneurs that help us scale even faster,” Anuj Srivastava, CEO and Co-founder, of Livspace, had said.

Livspace currently has operations in over 45 cities across Southeast Asia, India, and the Middle East region.

It has raised around $450 million in capital from some of the top global investors including KKR, Ingka Group Investments (part of the largest IKEA retailer Ingka Group), TPG Growth, Goldman Sachs, Kharis Capital, Venturi Partners, and others.

India 1st in South Asia on govt requests for user data from Big Tech firms

0

India has been ranked first in South Asia based on government requests for user data from Big Tech companies, a report showed on Monday.

From 2013 to 2021, Meta and Google received the highest number of account requests from India, according to the popular VPN service Surfshark.

India ranked seventh in all of Asia with 58.7 accounts requested per 100,000 people.

The research showed that globally, countries requested more than 6.6 million accounts combined during the 9-year period, while India requested 823,000.

The overall disclosure rate in India is 55.3 percent, said the report.

Looking at requested accounts per population, India ranks 36th in the world based on the user accounts requested by authorities over this time period.

The number of accounts requested increased more than five times from 2013 to 2021, with 2021 seeing a year-over-year increase of around 25 percent.

India shows the same trend, with a 1,476 percent increase from 2013 to 2021. Requested accounts grew by 55 percent in 2021 compared to 2020, the report showed.

In total, over 6.6 million accounts were requested in 177 countries from 2013 to 2021, with a steady increase in the latest years. The US and the EU authorities requested data the most.

Apple complied with the most useful data requests (82 percent), compared to Meta, Google, and MicrosoftA (72 per cent, 71 per cent, and 68 percent, respectively).

“Besides requesting data from technology companies, authorities are now exploring more ways to monitor and tackle crime through online services. For instance, the EU is considering a regulation that would require Internet service providers to detect, report, and remove abuse-related content,” said Gabriele Kaveckyte, Privacy Counsel at Surfshark.

The research analyzed the just-released information on user data requests that Apple, Google, Meta, and Microsoft received from 177 countries’ local authorities between 2013 and 2021.

NASA mission to Saturn’s moon may unravel chemistry leading to life

0

An upcoming NASA mission to Saturn’s giant moon Titan aims to discover the development of life in the universe, the US space agency said.

The mission called Dragonfly is due to launch in 2027 and will reach Titan in 2034.

Dragonfly carries an instrument called the Dragonfly Mass Spectrometer (DraMS), which will shed light on the kinds of chemical steps that occurred on Earth that ultimately led to the formation of life, called prebiotic chemistry.

Titan’s abundant complex carbon-rich chemistry, interior ocean, and past presence of liquid water on the surface make it an ideal destination to study prebiotic chemical processes and the potential habitability of an extraterrestrial environment, the mission officials said in a statement.

DraMS will allow scientists back on Earth to remotely study the chemical makeup of the Titanian surface.

“We want to know if the type of chemistry that could be important for early pre-biochemical systems on Earth is taking place on Titan,” Dr. Melissa Trainer of NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center, Greenbelt, Maryland, said in a statement.

To accomplish this, the Dragonfly robotic rotorcraft will capitalize on Titan’s low gravity and dense atmosphere to fly between different points of interest on Titan’s surface, spread as far as several miles apart.

This allows Dragonfly to relocate its entire suite of instruments to a new site when the previous one has been fully explored and provides access to samples in environments with a variety of geologic histories.

At each site, samples less than a gram in size will be drilled out of the surface by the Drill for Acquisition of Complex Organics (DrACO) and brought inside the lander’s main body, to a place called the “attic” that houses the DraMS instrument.

There, they will be irradiated by an onboard laser or vaporized in an oven to be measured by DraMS.

“DraMS is designed to look at the organic molecules that may be present on Titan, at their composition and distribution in different surface environments,” Trainer said.

Organic molecules contain carbon and are used by all known forms of life. They are of interest in understanding the formation of life because they can be created by living and non-living processes.

Twitter to soon open source all code used to recommend tweets: Musk

0

Twitter CEO Elon Musk on Saturday said that the micro-blogging platform will open source all code used for recommending tweets on March 31.

Musk tweeted: “Twitter will open source all code used to recommend tweets on March 31.”

“Our ‘algorithm’ is overly complex and not fully understood internally. People will discover many silly things, but we’ll patch issues as soon as they’re found!”

Also, Musk said that the company is developing a simplified approach to “serve” more “compelling” tweets and that will also be open source.

“Providing code transparency will be incredibly embarrassing at first, but it should lead to rapid improvement in recommendation quality. Most importantly, we hope to earn your trust,” he added.

Last month, Musk said that the platform will make its algorithm “open source”, and improve it “rapidly.”

The Twitter CEO said that in the coming months, the company will use artificial intelligence (AI) to “detect and highlight manipulation of public opinion on this platform.”

Earlier this month, the tech billionaire said that his interest has been switched from cryptocurrencies to AI.

Apple’s foldable iPhone may protect itself from drops

0

Tech giant Apple is reportedly working on a new technology that will enable iPhones and iPads with flexible screens to sense drops and automatically fold up on the way to the ground to minimize damage.

The information came from the tech giant’s new patent application named ‘Self-Retracting Display Device And Techniques For Protecting Screen Using Drop Detection’, reports AppleInsider.

According to the tech giant, the display itself can decide to break away, regardless of how the device folds at the hinge or whether a screen can be removed from a base chassis.

The display can detach or fold in a way that protects the screen in place of a possibly fragile hinge.

“Mobile devices with foldable and rollable displays can use a sensor to detect vertical acceleration (e.g., acceleration with respect to the ground) to determine if the mobile device has been dropped,” the patent application said.

“If the sensor detects that the mobile device has been dropped… the foldable device can retract at least partially to afford protection from the fragile display from striking the ground,” it added.

This means that there are then two options — retracting the screen or releasing it.

“(For example, the process) can include activating a release mechanism for a hinged connection between a first display and a second display of the electronic device when the vertical acceleration exceeds a predetermined threshold,” Apple said in the application, “wherein the activating reduces an angle between the first display and the second display below a threshold angle.”

Whatsapp rolling out ‘Groups in common’ section within search bar on beta

0

Meta-owned messaging platform WhatsApp is rolling out a new feature for some beta testers on Android and iOS which allows users to see a list of groups they have in common with the contact they are searching for.

Beta users will see a new ‘Groups in common’ section when searching for contacts within the search bar, reports WABetaInfo.

The new feature gives users more information when searching for contacts within the search bar.

It is currently available for some testers, and is expected to be rolled out to more users over the coming days, the report said.

This feature is the same as the one rolled out on WhatsApp Desktop, which allows users to see the groups they have in common with their contacts without opening their chat information to see the list of groups in common.

Meanwhile, last week, it was reported that the messaging platform was rolling out a new “approve new participants” feature in group settings for some beta testers on Android and iOS.

WPL will push standard of women’s game forward: Heather Knight

0

England captain Heather Knight, who is currently playing for Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) in the inaugural edition of the Women’s Premier League (WPL), feels the tournament has the bright potential to push the standard of women’s cricket forward and bring in investment.

“When the men’s IPL started, you saw a shift in the game. And that’s definitely the case here. The money involved is just crazy and I think the standard has been very strong.

There are going to be so many benefits from it. It is going to push the standard of the game forward and bring in investment,” Knight said on the first episode of Sky Cricket’s Daggers and Lyds podcast.

Talking about her experience of playing WPL in India, she said, “The passion for cricket out here (in India) is unbelievable. It’s such an amazing place to play. Cricketers here are treated like gods. They just love the game so much. Indian fans are the noisiest in the world, for me.”

RCB had a poor start to the WPL, losing all first five games before finally registering a first win against UP Warriorz at the Brabourne Stadium on Wednesday. Heather recounted how the side getting their first win got them the guard of honor back from their hotel staff.

“It’s funny. We got back from the ground after our first game, our first loss, and there was a big guard of honor from all of the staff. We’d just lost, so we were like, ‘this is a bit embarrassing’.

We lost the next one, and so the number of staff sort of halved in size we lost the next one and it was just a couple of chefs clapping. After the fourth one, no one was there, it was just tumbleweeds in the lobby,” the England player said.

“Finally getting our first win, the guard of honor was back! Everyone was holding cricket bats, there were rose petals thrown from the balcony, there was champagne, and there was cake. It was a lot of fun. I can’t imagine what they’re going to do if we turn things around and make the finals,” she added.

RCB, currently at the bottom of the points table, will face Gujarat Giants in their next WPL 2023 match at the Brabourne Stadium on Saturday evening.

YouTube TV’s ‘multiview’ feature rolling out to all users

0

Video-sharing platform YouTube on Saturday announced that it is rolling out its streaming television service’s new “multiview” feature to all users that allow subscribers to watch up to four different programs at the same time.

The company tweeted from its YouTube TV account: “Wow! We hear ya! We’re rolling out multiview streams to ALL users for the rest of the tournament.”

“We didn’t plan to release this beyond our test group so soon. Please be patient while we fine-tune and fix known issues. Enjoy multiview early as we prep for a biiig fall.”

Commenting on the announcement, one user asked, “Any chance it’ll ever be more than two screens? I’ve seen that since yesterday.”

To this, the platform replied, “since this is a pilot feature, we’re still figuring out the best configurations. you may see anywhere from 2 to 4 streams shown together based on the timing of when games are scheduled to begin and end.”

Earlier this week, the company announced the “multiview” feature and said that early access to multiview will roll out to all YouTube TV members over the next few months.

Twitch CEO Emmett Shear quits after 16 years

0

Video live-streaming platform Twitch CEO Emmett Shear has resigned with immediate effect after 16 years in the top role.

Dan Clancy, current Twitch President, will step fully into the role of CEO, effective immediately.

“He cares deeply about the Twitch community, its streamers, and our staff and understands what makes Twitch, Twitch,” said Shear in a blog post late on Thursday.

He started on Twitch in October 2006. Sixteen years and four months later, “I’ve never set up direct deposit a second time”.

Twitch Inc. became a fully-owned subsidiary of Amazon, and along the way “we have grown to more than 8 million streamers a month”, said Shear.

“With my first child just born, I’ve been reflecting on my future with Twitch. Twitch often feels to me like a child I’ve been raising as well. And while I will always want to be there if Twitch needs me, at 16 years old it feels to me Twitch is ready to move out of the house and venture alone,” Shear wrote.

“So it is with a great poignancy that I share my decision to resign from Twitch as CEO. I want to be fully there for my son as he enters this world and I feel ready for this change to tackle new challenges. I will continue to work at Twitch in an advisory role,” he added.

Twitch recently rolled out new moderation and safety features to improve the platform.

iOS users to now see bookmark counts on tweets

0

Micro-blogging platform Twitter on Friday announced that iOS users will now see bookmark counts on tweets.

The company tweeted from its ‘Twitter Support’ account: “We love Bookmarks for saving Tweets to revisit later. Starting today on iOS, you’ll now see the total number of times a Tweet has been bookmarked on Tweet details.”

“Don’t worry, though — your Bookmarks are still private. We’ll never display which accounts have added a Tweet to their Bookmarks,” it added.

On the new feature’s help page, the company mentioned that it is planning to expand this feature.

Everyone on the platform can see bookmark counts on tweets, whether they are the author or the reader.

In January this year, Twitter CEO Elon Musk promised a feature that will allow users to easily bookmark tweets, and later the platform started rolling it out on iOS.

The new feature displays the bookmark option under the expanded tweet view which makes it easier for users to add a post to their bookmarks.

Meanwhile, last month, the micro-blogging platform removed captions from its social audio rooms ‘Spaces’ on iOS.
