Cyber thug dupes judges’ wife of Rs 13L in UP

The wife of a judge has been duped Rs 13 lakh by cyber thugs while she was trying to increase the limit of her credit card.

In her FIR, the complainant informed the police that she wanted to increase the limit of her credit card for which she searched for her private bank’s helpline number on the Internet.

When she dialled the number, a fraudster posing as the bank representative asked her to transfer Rs 15,000 to a bank account to increase her credit limit, assuring her that the amount would be refunded on November 25.

The complainant claimed that when she did not get the refund, she again called the number. The fraudster sent her a link and asked her to fill out a form that sought her bank account details.

“I did not get my money back and on November 28, a sum of Rs 13 lakh was taken from my bank account as a loan,” she said.

Inspector, cyber cell, Ranjeet Singh said that prima facie it appeared that the fraudster took the remote-control access of her phone, thereby getting the details of her account and got a loan sanctioned. “We have lodged an FIR. Efforts are on to find the location of the fraudsters,” he said.

Singh said that fraudsters were putting out their numbers on Google claiming it to be a customer care helpline number. They ask callers to download an app that gives them access to their mobile phones, which in turn helps them get access to their bank details and OTPs.

“Do not share banking details such as card number, CVV, ATM PIN, banking passwords, and one-time passwords (OTP) with anyone over the phone or e-mail under any circumstance. As a general practice, no bank or reputed company asks its customers for confidential details over the phone or email,” the officer said.

YouTube removes 1.7 mn videos in India for violating its norms in Q3

0

Google-owned YouTube on Tuesday said that it has removed over 1.7 million videos in India for violating its Community Guidelines in its Q3 report.

In the same period, the streaming platform removed over 5.6 million videos globally for violating its community guidelines.

According to the Community Guidelines Enforcement report, more than 94 percent of these videos were first flagged by machines rather than humans.

Of the videos detected by machines, 36 percent were removed before they received a single view, and 31 percent received between one and 10 views before removal.

More than 67 percent of YouTube’s violent videos were removed before they received more than 10 views. Moreover, YouTube removed over 5 million channels in Q3 2022 for violating their Community Guidelines.

Most of these channels were terminated for violating the company’s spam policies, including misleading metadata or thumbnails, scams, video, and comments spam, said the report.

The video streaming platform removed more than 728 million comments in Q3 2022, the majority of which were spam. More than 99 percent of removed comments were detected automatically, the report added.

YouTube has Community Guidelines that set the rules of the road for what is not allowed on YouTube. The company enforces its policies using a combination of machine learning and human reviewers.

WhatsApp launches ‘forward media with caption’ feature on iOS

0

Meta-owned messaging platform WhatsApp has launched the ‘forward media with the caption’ feature on iOS, which provides users the ability to forward images, videos, GIFs, and documents, with a caption.

After downloading the latest WhatsApp for iOS 22.23.77 update from the App Store, some users were able to access the new feature, reports WABetaInfo.

Users have to forward an image with a caption in order to know if the ability is enabled on their account and a new view will display at the bottom of the screen.

Additionally, if someone does not want to forward the caption, a dismiss button is provided to remove the caption from the image before forwarding the message.

The feature will roll out to more users over the coming days, the report said.

Last week, it was reported that the messaging platform was working on voice status on iOS beta for an upcoming iOS update which would provide users the ability to share voice notes to their status updates.

Apple releases second Rapid Security Response update for iOS 16.2 users

0

Apple has released a new update — Rapid Security Response which is available to those running the iOS 16.2 beta, marking the second RSR update since the feature was released in iOS 16.

According to MacRumours, the Rapid Security Response update is intended to provide bug fixes to iOS 16.2 beta users without requiring them to install a full update.

Since the first RSR release for iOS 16.2 beta users was a test without any actual bug fixes, this update is likely to be a similar test as well.

Beta users can find the update in the Settings app in the same place a normal update appears. This update will appear as iOS Security Response 16.2 (b), according to the report.

Earlier this month, Apple released its third iOS 16.2 beta, which allows users to disable wallpaper and notifications from displaying on the iPhone’s always-on display.

In iOS 16.2 beta 3, the company has added two new toggles — one that disables the ‘show wallpaper’ feature and another that disables the ‘show notifications’ feature.

Furthermore, Apple, in its first iOS 16.2 beta to developers release, allowed users to send a report to the company when Emergency SOS has been triggered inadvertently.

WhatsApp denies 500 mn users’ data leak

0

Meta-owned WhatsApp on Monday denied that phone numbers of 487 million users have been stolen and put on sale on a “well-known” hacking community forum.

Cybernews first reported that the dataset allegedly contains WhatsApp user data from 84 countries and phone numbers of over 32 million users from the US, 11 million from the UK, and 10 million from Russia.

“The claim written on Cybernews is based on unsubstantiated screenshots. There is no evidence of a ‘data leak’ from WhatsApp,” a company spokesperson told IANS.

The purported list is a set of phone numbers and not “WhatsApp user information”.

According to the report, the hacker claimed to have a significant number of phone numbers belonging to the citizens of Egypt (45 million), Italy (35 million), Saudi Arabia (29 million), France (20 million), and Turkey (20 million).

The hacker was selling the US dataset for $7,000, the UK for $2,500, and Germany for $2,000, according to the report.

Cybernews researchers were able to get in touch with the hacker. Upon investigation, the researchers found that all of them were active WhatsApp users.

However, the hacker did not specify how they obtained the data, suggesting they “used their strategy,” and that all the numbers belong to WhatsApp users, said the report.

This database can be used by hackers for spamming, phishing attempts, identity theft, and other cybercriminal activities, the report said.

5.4 mn Twitter users’ data leaked online, to grow even bigger

0

As Elon Musk goes gaga over transforming Twitter, at least 5.4 million Twitter user records have been stolen via an internal bug and leaked online on a hacker forum.

In addition to the 5.4 million records for sale online, there were an additional 1.4 million Twitter profiles collected using a different Twitter application programming interface (API) that have reportedly been shared privately among a few people.

The massive data consists of scraped public information as well as private phone numbers and email addresses that are not meant to be public, reports Bleeping Computer.

Security expert Chad Loder first broke the news on Twitter and was suspended soon from the platform.

“I have just received evidence of a massive Twitter data breach affecting millions of Twitter accounts in the EU and the US. I have contacted a sample of the affected accounts and they confirmed that the breached data is accurate. This breach occurred no earlier than 2021,” Loder posted on Twitter.

The data containing non-public information was stolen using a Twitter API vulnerability fix in January this year.

This data was collected in December 2021 using a Twitter API vulnerability disclosed in the HackerOne bug bounty program, the report said on Sunday.

Most of the data consisted of public information, such as Twitter IDs, names, login names, locations, and verified status. A

It also included private information, such as phone numbers and email addresses.

Musk or Twitter was yet to comment on the report.

Pompompurin, the owner of the Breached hacking forum, told BleepingComputer that “they were responsible for exploiting the bug and creating the massive dump of Twitter user records after another threat actor known as ‘Devil’ shared the vulnerability with them,” the report mentioned.

As hackers released 5.4 million records online, an even larger data dump has allegedly been created using the same vulnerability, according to the report.

“We were told that it consists of over 17 million records but could not independently confirm this,” said the report.

NASA’s Mars helicopter makes a short yet significant flight

0

NASA engineers have taken its Mars Ingenuity helicopter on a short but important 18-second successful flight to test new capabilities.

The operations team has been working on the new capabilities over the past few weeks. The software upgrade includes hazard avoidance on landing and the use of digital elevation maps.

“Despite the flight’s simple nature, the team is very excited because of what it means for the future of Ingenuity,” the US space agency said in a statement. NASA tested the new software for the first time on Flight 34.

“Jezero Crater is a rocky place, so safe airfields have been tough to find! Using Ingenuity’s downward-facing navigation camera, this software update adds hazard avoidance on landing,” said Joshua Anderson, Ingenuity Mars Helicopter Operations Lead at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory.

“While in flight, Ingenuity will identify the safest visible landing site. When preparing to land, Ingenuity will then divert over to this selected site. This capability allows Ingenuity to safely land in rockier terrain than before, providing our pilots with many more potential landing sites,” Anderson added.

The navigation system for the helicopter was created on the assumption that the vehicle would be traveling over flat ground.

“Over long flights, navigation errors caused by rough terrain must be accounted for, requiring the team to select large airfields,” Anderson mentioned.

The team will use the results from the flight to start testing the new capabilities, making sure that everything works as expected on the surface of Mars.

India successfully orbits Indo-French collaborative EOS 6/OCEANSAT, 8 other satellites

0

India on Saturday successfully placed into orbit the Indo-French ocean observation satellite EOS 06 and eight other nanosatellites with its rocket Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle numbered PSLV-C54.

Announcing the mission’s success, the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) Chairman and Secretary, of the Department of Space, S. Somanath, said all the satellites have been launched.

He also said the solar panels of the EOS 06 satellite had been deployed and the satellite was in precise orbit as intended and congratulated the ISRO team.

The XL variant of PSLV rocket carrying the 1,117 kg EOS-6 as its primary passenger and eight others – blasted off from the first launch pad at Satish Dhawan Space Centre (SDSC) here at 11.56 a.m.

The piggybacks include satellites from two Indian startups – Syzygy Space Technologies Pvt Ltd, commonly known as Pixxel (Anand-16.51 kg), and Dhruvaspace’s two Thybolt satellites – 1.45 kg, Spaceflight USA’s Astrosat (four numbers 17.92 kg) and ISRO’s INS-2B (18.28 kg).

About 17 minutes into the flight the rocket ejected EOS-6. Then the orbit was changed by using two Orbit Change Thrusters introduced in the rocket’s propulsion bay ring. The piggyback passengers were ejected in Orbit-2. The whole mission took about two hours. With this, the PSLV rocket has put into orbit 349 foreign satellites to date.

When one takes into account the 36 satellites of UK-based OneWeb that were orbited by another rocket LVM3 this year, then the total number of foreign satellites put into orbit by ISRO would go up to 385.

At the end of the final countdown, the four-stage expendable, 44.4 m tall XL variant of PSLV rocket weighing 321 tons slowly rose towards the skies with thick orange flame at its tail. The rocket gained speed as it went up while emitting a rolling thunder sound.

The PSLV rocket is powered by solid (first and third stages) and liquid (second and fourth stages) fuels alternatively.

The rocket that flew on Saturday was the 56th mission of PSLV and the 24th mission using the PSLV-XL variant having six strap-on booster motors with six-ton fuel.

The ISRO said the Indo-French collaborative EOS-06/Oceansat will provide continuity services for Oceansat-2 spacecraft with enhanced payload capabilities and application areas.

The EOS-06 payloads include Ocean Color Monitor (OCM-3), Sea Surface Temperature Monitor (SSTM), Ku-Band Scatterometer (SCAT-3), and ARGOS – a French payload.

According to France, ARGOS will reinforce the existing fleet of Indo-French satellites working on weather surveillance that are already in orbit (MEGHA-TROPIQUES and SARAL-ALTIKA), thus enhancing contributions related to the objectives of the Paris Agreement.

The Indian space agency said the satellite will ensure data continuity of ocean color and wind vector data to sustain the operational applications. It will also improve the applications, some additional datasets such as Sea Surface Temperature and more bands in the Optical region for fluorescence and in the Infrared region for atmospheric corrections are accommodated.

The satellite will also develop/improve related algorithms and data products to serve in well-established application areas and enhance the mission utility.

The INS-2B is ISRO’s second nanosatellite for Bhutan with two payloads viz., NanoMx and APRS-Digipeater. The NanoMx is a multispectral optical imaging payload developed by its Space Applications Centre (SAC). The APRS-Digipeater payload is jointly developed by DITTBhutan and ISRO’s UR Rao Satellite Centre (URSC), ISRO said.

The Bhutanese Information and Communication Minister Lyonpo Karma Donnen Wangdi who had witnessed the mission from here said, the commendable track record of ISRO in satellite launching left no doubt about the mission’s success.

He said the mission is another key milestone of the close relationship between India and Bhutan. Wangdi said the satellite was built during the Covid-19 pandemic.

Indian Minister for External Affairs S. Jaishakar said ISRO is working on setting up a ground station in Bhutan.

Pixxel’s Anand nanosatellite is a technology demonstrator to demonstrate the capabilities and commercial applications of the miniaturized earth-observation camera for earth observation using a microsatellite in Low Earth Orbit. This is a three-axis stabilized satellite consisting of a status, accommodating all subsystems like telemetry, tele-command, electrical power system, Attitude Determination and Control System (ADCS), on-board computers and others, and a payload unit, ISRO said.

The Dhuruvaspace’s Thybolt satellites have a communication payload to enable rapid technology demonstration and constellation development for multiple users. It also demonstrates Store-and-Forward functionality for authorized users in the amateur frequency band.

Astrocast, a 3U spacecraft, is a technology demonstrator satellite for the Internet of Things (IoT) as the payload.

From Meta to Zomato, how India’s new online review rules will impact industry

0

With the new Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) guidelines coming into force to guard customers against fake online reviews of products, tech giants like Meta and Google, along with homegrown platforms like Zomato and Flipkart, will now face closer scrutiny of product reviews on their respective platforms.

The guidelines, prescribing specific responsibilities for the review author and the review administrator, went live on Friday and are now applicable to every online platform which publishes consumer reviews.

The new norms have been finalized by the BIS and came into being after the Department of Consumer Affairs received several complaints about fake reviews of products being posted by e-commerce companies on social media and their platforms.

“The new guidelines for online reviews are designed to drive increased transparency for both consumers and brands and promote information accuracy”, said Sachin Taparia, Founder of LocalCircles, the community platform who made the initial submission to the Department of Consumer Affairs and was part of the BIS committee drafting the guidelines.

As far as platforms like Google and Meta go, the new rules will require them to validate the real person behind the review through specified six-right mechanisms which mean fake accounts created just for review writing will go away over time or won’t be able to be reviewed.

For platforms like Swiggy and Zomato, their reviews at the restaurant level are partially transparent “but the process of food item level review is not transparent at all and will have to be designed accordingly”, Taparia told Media.

For eCommerce platforms, the new guidelines will ensure that negative reviews are not suppressed without reason thereby ensuring that other consumers will come to know of problems sooner. According to the new set of guidelines, both consumers and suppliers/sellers have reported some problems with online reviews.

“These problems might be intentional or unintentional, but can lead to a degradation of trust in the online review process,” read the BIS document.

Some reported problems are false positive reviews written by the suppliers/sellers themselves intending to mislead consumers and false negative reviews written by suppliers/sellers’ competitors intending to ward off consumers from the organization.

According to Taparia, for travel platforms, it is common for hotels to invite bloggers and influencers for free stays and then get them to write a nice review but “going forward, the platforms will have to enable the disclosure of such sponsored reviews so the consumer is aware”.

The guidelines will also have an implication for ratings of apps on Google Play Store and Apple App Store, where developers at times run paid campaigns to get their app rated 5 stars.

Apple and Google will now need to take undertakings about reviews from these app developers about sponsored ratings.

“There are several product reviews and rating websites/apps which just provide information and many times plant a negative review to attract brands. This will have to change as the guidelines will require them to make disclosures and identify the person rating,” Taparia noted.

The violation of new standards by any entity may be considered an unfair trade practice or violation of consumer rights and a consumer may submit such grievances to the National Consumer Helpline or the Central Consumer Protection Authority (CCPA) under the Ministry of Consumer Affairs.
