Slaughter of turkeys
A new outbreak of bird flu in the northeastern region of the Czech Republic has led to the culling of nearly 15,000 turkeys at a commercial farm in the town of Rychvald. The State Veterinary Administration (SVS) has reported that the farm has already killed 250 turkeys out of a total of 15,192.
Samples taken by veterinary inspectors from the farm have confirmed highly pathogenic avian influenza of the H5N1 subtype. As a result, all the remaining poultry at the farm will also have to be culled. The culling operation involves firefighters and veterinarians working together
The frequent outbreaks of bird flu in the Czech Republic are a serious concern for the poultry industry, as they can result in significant economic losses. The culling of 15,000 turkeys in the Rychvald farm is a necessary measure to prevent the spread of the virus to other farms in the area.
The SVS’s efforts to contain the outbreak by taking preliminary veterinary measures around the affected farm and monitoring other farms in the vicinity are commendable. However, the fact that this is the 21st outbreak of bird flu in the country this year highlights the need for increased biosecurity measures to prevent the spread of the virus in the future.
