Adnan Siddiqui, a Pakistani actor, has taken issue with Priyanka Chopra’s recent post about Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy. Chopra had congratulated Obaid-Chinoy on becoming the first woman and person of color to direct a Star Wars film, referring to her as a “South Asian” in the process.
Adnan Siddiqui took to Twitter to respond, reminding Chopra that Obaid-Chinoy is Pakistani first and foremost. He also pointed out that Chopra often emphasizes her Indian nationality before identifying as South Asian.
Obaid-Chinoy is a Pakistani-Canadian filmmaker and documentarian who was recently announced as a director for one of the upcoming Star Wars films. Chopra had called it a “historic moment” in her Instagram post, saying she was proud of her “South Asian” friend.
