As of January 7, there have been 682 reported cases of the COVID-19 sub-variant JN.1 across 12 states in India. The highest number of cases are in Karnataka (199), followed by Kerala (148) and Maharashtra (139). Other states have reported varying numbers.
Although the cases are increasing and the JN.1 sub-variant is present, officials say there’s no immediate worry. Most infected individuals are choosing home-based treatment, indicating mild illness.
The government has advised states to stay vigilant due to the rise in COVID-19 cases and the detection of the JN.1 sub-variant. States are instructed to follow guidelines for revised surveillance, monitor cases in health facilities, and report trends promptly.
The World Health Organization (WHO) has labeled JN.1 as a “variant of interest,” recognizing its rapid spread. However, it’s considered a “low” global public health risk. The JN.1 sub-variant was initially part of the BA.2.86 sub-lineages, categorized as a variant of interest by the WHO.
