LinkedIn adds new job filters to find remote work

Professional networking platform LinkedIn is introducing dedicated remote, hybrid and on-site search filters to help users on their next job hunt.

Users will see the labels when using the social network’s job search and Open to Work features, Engadget reported.

In the latter case, taking advantage of the filters will privately inform recruiters of the type of work you are looking for, which the company said should help the right job find you.

At the same time, the professional networking platform is adding similar filters for company pages, allowing them to indicate things like their vaccine policies and return-to-office plans, the report said.

In testing the filters, LinkedIn said it saw more than 70 per cent of searches involve people looking for remote-only roles.

It’s a testament to how uncertain the pandemic has made every return-to-office plan.

Even companies Amazon, Google and Facebook have struggled to find ones that stick. And so it’s no surprise most LinkedIn users are looking for opportunities where they can continue working from home, as per the report.

Govt has been very fair: SC on Centre’s decision to conduct NEET-SS exam by old pattern

After being pushed by the Supreme Court, the Centre on Wednesday told the top court that NEET-Super Speciality exam scheduled in November this year will be held as per the old question pattern.

Additional Solicitor General Aishwarya Bhati, representing the Centre, submitted before a bench headed by Justice D.Y. Chandrachud that in the larger interest of students, the government has decided that the revised NEET-SS exam syllabus will be introduced from 2022 — the new question pattern will be applicable from next year.

The bench replied that the “government has been very fair”.

Bhati said the exam scheduled this year will be held as per the old pattern.

Advocate Prashant Bhushan, representing a petitioner, submitted that this should not in any way imply that the court is accepting the revised pattern exam for the next year.

The bench recorded that the Centre states that decision has been taken in consultation with the National Medical Commission (NMC) and National Board of Examinations (NBE) and taking note of students’ interest who would have commenced preparation for NEET-SS, before the change of pattern was notified.

The bench said the Centre has stated that the modified pattern will be in effect from academic year 2022-23. “Since the grievance addressed under Article 32, and in these circumstances petitions under Article 32 are disposed of”, said the bench.

On Tuesday, the Supreme Court pulling up the Centre on the changes in the National Eligibility-cum-Entrance Test-Super Specialty (NEET-SS) 2021 pattern, said the impression and message which will go out is that the medical education and medical regulation in the country has become a business and it appears the entire haste is for filling the vacant seats.

On the aspect of syllabus change, the bench told the NBE counsel, “What was the hurry. You have an examination pattern which had been going on from 2018 to 2020.”

The top court said: “The impression we get is that the medical education has become a business and medical regulation has also become a business”.

The bench also comprising Justices Vikram Nath and B.V. Nagarathna said this would become a tragedy for the medical education in the country.

Defending the pattern change, the Centre had proposed deferring the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET) Super Speciality exam for 2021 by a period of two months.

The top court was hearing a plea by Prateek Rastogi and 40 postgraduate qualified doctors, who challenged the abrupt last-minute changes, contending that they were made to favour the general medicine candidates.

Unemployment, Covid top most worries for urban Indians: Survey

According to the Ipsos ‘What Worries the World’ global monthly survey, unemployment (42 per cent) and coronavirus (42 per cent) have emerged as the biggest worries of Urban Indians — both tied at the top spot.

Compared to the previous month, coronavirus has declined by 5 per cent in worry levels, unemployment has increased in worry levels by 2 per cent.

Elaborating on the findings, Amit Adarkar, CEO, Ipsos India said, “We see uptick in worry levels for unemployment by 2 per cent, while worry levels for Covid-19 has seen a slight dip of 5 per cent — but now both are placed neck to neck — Covid impacted the job market considerably due to the shutdown and restrictions — now with the cautious reopening, worry levels around jobs have not abated — demand far outstrips supply — and those who have lost their jobs, many are still struggling to gain a foothold. Covid-19 too is far from over. It is a case of cause and effect.”

The survey showed that global citizens worry about coronavirus (36 per cent), unemployment (31 per cent), poverty and social inequality (31 per cent), financial and political corruption (27 per cent) and crime and violence (26 per cent).

Global citizens on the contrary continue to remain pessimistic with at least 65 per cent believing their country is on the wrong track. The gloomiest markets that felt their country was on the wrong track were Columbia (89 per cent), South Africa (85 per cent) and Peru (81 per cent ).

Ipsos’ What Worries the World survey is conducted in 28 countries around the world. It is based on 20,012 interviews conducted between August 20 and September 3, 2021 among adults aged 18-74 in the US, South Africa, Turkey, Israel and Canada and age 16-74 in all other countries. Data are weighted to match the profile of the population.

T’gana Cong to launch agitatation against unemployment on Oct 2

The opposition Congress in Telangana announced on Wednesday that it will launch an agitation on October 2 to highlight the problem of unemployment in the state.

Telangana Pradesh Congress Committee (TPCC) President A. Revanth Reddy said that ‘Vidyarthi Nirudyoga Jung Siren’ will be undertaken from October 2 to December 9.

As part of the 65-day-long agitation, protests will held in all the universities across the state. Reddy appealed to every student and unemployed persons to participate in the agitation.

He said the party would highlight how the Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS) ‘betrayed’ the students and the unemployed. He alleged that the TRS government led by Chief Minister K. Chandrashekar Rao, popularly known as KCR, failed to fulfil the dreams of those students and youth who laid down their lives for the Telangana state.

Reddy recalled that in its election manifesto in 2014, the TRS had promised free education from KG to PG and a job for every household. He alleged that after coming to power, KCR shut down 4,368 primary schools in the remote areas of the state, which resulted in the poor getting deprived of education.

Reddy also claimed that the TRS government did not recruit teachers. The government is not releasing funds for fee reimbursement to students and as a result, the poor students are committing suicide.

He also held KCR responsible for the suicides of students.

He recalled that the Congress had introduced free reimbursement to make higher education accessible to the poor. He alleged that due to the negligence by KCR, the dues under fee reimbursement mounted to Rs 4,000 crore.

He pointed out that the TRS government did not even fulfil the promise of paying unemployment allowance, claiming that the government owes Rs 1 lakh to each of the 60 lakh unemployed people in the state.

Claiming that there are 1.9 lakh vacancies in government departments, Reddy said the number of vacancies has gone up as compared to when the Telangana state was formed in 2014.

The announcement of the protest programme came a day after the Election Commission of India declared the schedule for the by-election to the Huzurabad Assembly constituency.

The bypoll will be held on October 30 while the counting of votes will be taken up on November 2.

This will be the second protest programme to be undertaken by the Congress after Reddy took over as the state unit chief in July.

Earlier, the party had undertaken a ‘Dalit Girijan Atmagaurava Dandoora’ programme to highlight how the TRS government ‘betrayed’ Dalits and tribals by going back on the promises made to these sections.

US initial jobless claims rise for 2nd straight week

Initial unemployment claims in the US have increased for a second straight week to 351,000, indicating a disrupted labour market recovery amid an ongoing Delta variant-fuelled Covid-19 resurgence, the Labour Department reported.

In the week ending September 18, the number of Americans filing for unemployment benefits increased by 16,000 from the previous week’s upwardly revised level of 335,000, according to a report released on Thursday by the Department’s Bureau of Labour Statistics.

The four-week moving average, a method to iron out data volatility, however, decreased by 750 to 335,750, reports Xinhua news agency.

In recent months, initial jobless claims hit fresh lows on multiple occasions in the pandemic era, but the declining trend was repeatedly reversed, indicating a bumpy economic recovery.

The jobless claims report also showed that the number of people continuing to collect regular state unemployment benefits in the week ending September 11 increased by 131,000 to 2.8 million.

That number peaked in April and May last year, when it was over 20 million.

Meanwhile, the total number of people claiming benefits in all programs, state and federal combined, for the week ending Sept. 4 fell by 856,440 to 11.25 million.

In particular, the number of people filing for Pandemic Unemployment Assistance, a federal program that covers workers who normally would not qualify for unemployment insurance, fell by 591,108 to 4.9 million for the week ending September 4.

The Pandemic Emergency Unemployment Compensation, which provides an additional 13 weeks of benefits for those who exhaust regular state benefits, also saw its claims fall by 161,240 to 3.6 million.

These numbers have decreased significantly after federal unemployment benefits for over 10 million people expired in early September.

Some 7.5 million workers or more will lose all their benefits, and nearly 3 million will lose a $300 weekly federal boost to state unemployment payments after the federal programs expire.

Meeting climate goals will create 8 mn energy jobs worldwide

Meeting the United Nations-mandated Paris Agreement of staying well below 2-degree Celsius above pre-industrial levels would increase net jobs by about 8 million by 2050, according to a study.

The study, published in the journal ‘One Earth’, showed that jobs would increase primarily due to gains in the solar and wind industries.

Of the total jobs in 2050, 84 per cent would be in the renewables sector, 11 per cent in fossil fuels, and 5 per cent in the nuclear sector, the researchers said.

While fossil fuel extraction jobs, which constitute 80 per cent of current fossil fuel jobs, would rapidly decline, these losses will be compensated by gains in solar and wind manufacturing jobs, the study found.

“Currently, an estimated 18 million people work in the energy industries — a number that is likely to increase, not decrease, to 26 million or by over 50 per cent if we reach our global climate targets,” said Johannes Emmerling, an environmental economist at the RFF-CMCC European Institute on Economics and the Environment in Italy.

“Manufacturing and installation of renewable energy sources could potentially become about one third of the total of these jobs, for which countries can also compete in terms of location,” Emmerling added.

For the study, the team created a global dataset of job footprints in 50 countries and used a model to investigate how trying to meet the Paris Agreement of staying well below 2-degree Celsius would affect energy sector jobs.

“Extraction sector jobs are more susceptible to decarbonisation, so there needs to be just transition policies in place,” said first author of the study, Sandeep Pai, from the University of British Columbia in Canada.

The team next aims to explore the shifts in skill levels, education requirements, and wages that may result from trying to meet the global climate target of the Paris Agreement.
