COVID-19 infection in kids may not start with a cough

0

Gastrointestinal symptoms such as diarrhoea, coupled with a fever or history of exposure to COVID-19, could indicate coronavirus infection in children, according to a new study.

Published in the journal Frontiers in Pediatrics, the research also suggests that the gastrointestinal symptoms first suffered by some children hint at potential infection through the digestive tract, as the type of receptors in cells in the lungs targeted by the virus can also be found in the intestines.

“Most children are only mildly affected by COVID-19 and the few severe cases often have underlying health issues. It is easy to miss its diagnosis in the early stage when a child has non-respiratory symptoms or suffers from another illness,” said study author Dr. Wenbin Li from Tongji Hospital in Wuhan, China.

“Based on our experience of dealing with COVID-19, in regions where this virus is epidemic, children suffering from digestive tract symptoms, especially with fever and/or a history of exposure to this disease, should be suspected of being infected with this virus,” he continued.

In this study, the research team detail the clinical features of children admitted to the hospital with non-respiratory symptoms, which were subsequently diagnosed with pneumonia and COVID-19.

“These children were seeking medical advice in the emergency department for unrelated problems, for example, one had a kidney stone, another a head trauma,” said researchers.

All had pneumonia confirmed by chest CT scan before or soon after admission and then confirmed to have COVID-19. While their initial symptoms may have been unrelated, or their COVID-19 symptoms were initially mild or relatively hidden before their admission to hospital, importantly, four of the five cases had digestive tract symptoms as the first manifestation of this disease.

The researchers also link the children’s gastrointestinal symptoms, which have been recorded in adult patients, to an additional potential route of infection.

“The gastrointestinal symptoms experienced by these children may be related to the distribution of receptors and the transmission pathway associated with COVID-19 infection in humans. The virus infects people via the ACE2 receptor, which can be found in certain cells in the lungs as well as the intestines,” Li said.

This suggests that COVID-19 might infect patients not only through the respiratory tract in the form of air droplets but also through the digestive tract by contact or faecal-oral transmission.

“We report five cases of COVID-19 in children showing non-respiratory symptoms as the first manifestation after admission to hospital. The incidence and clinical features of similar cases need further study in more patients,” the researchers noted.

By highlighting these cases, the researchers hope that doctors will use this information to quickly diagnose and isolate patients with similar symptoms, which will aid early treatment and reduce transmission.

In March, another study from China, published in The American Journal of Gastroenterology, found that diarrhoea was a prominent symptom among up to half of the patients with COVID-19 in Wuhan.

Andhra Pradesh saw its lowest ever day’s tally of 38 COVID-19 cases on Monday. The state nodal officer reported that of the 7,409 samples tested in the 24 hours ending 10 a.m. on Monday, only 38 positive cases were detected. No deaths were reported from Andhra Pradesh during this period.

Monday also witnessed cases in single digits only from all the 7 districts that reported new cases in Andhra Pradesh. The highest number of 9 positive cases were reported from Kurnool and Chittoor districts, while Anantapur district reported 8 cases, and Guntur district reported 5 cases in the last 24 hours. Krishna, and Visakhapatnam districts reported 3 cases each, while Nellore district reported only 1 case. Six districts did not report any new cases on Monday morning.

With 73 persons discharged from hospitals in the last 24 hours, Andhra Pradesh also reported the highest single-day discharge in many days. With this, the number of cured persons in the state stands at 998 people. While the cumulative tally of coronavirus cases stands at 2,018, there are 975 active cases in Andhra Pradesh as of Monday. This is the lowest tally of active cases in many weeks for the state.

Kurnool district’s cumulative tally, at 575 cases, tops the state list. However, the number of active cases in the district is 292, with 267 reported cured and 16 deaths. This is followed by Guntur and Krishna districts with 387 and 342 cases respectively.

10 new COVID-19 cases raise Karnataka tally to 858

Karnataka registered 10 new COVID-19 positive cases in the past 19 hours, raising the state’s tally to 858, an official said on Monday.

“To date, 858 coronavirus positive cases have been confirmed. This includes 31 deaths and 422 discharges,” said a health official.

After three days of more than 40 cases being unearthed, the number of positive cases in the past 19 hours fell to 10.

Of the new cases, Davangere contributed 3, followed by Bagalkote and Bidar 2 each and Kalaburagi, Shiggavi in Haveri and Vijayapura, 1 each.

Except two patients with a travel history to Mumbai in Maharashtra and Ahmedabad in Gujarat, the top COVID-19 hotspots in India, the rest are all contacts of earlier cases.

Barring a 56-year-old Davangere woman and a 50-year-old Bidar man, all other cases are below 38.

According to the state COVID-19 dashboard information portal, active cases rose to 65 in Davangere, followed by Bagalkote, 39, Bidar, 13, Kalaburagi, 22, Haveri, 3 and Vijayapura 14.

This enzyme in men make them more vulnerable to Covid-19: Study

0

After several studies revealed that men are more vulnerable to COVID-19 infection, evidence from a new larger research of several thousand patients shows that men have higher concentrations of angiotensin-converting enzyme 2 (ACE2) in their blood than women, a molecule that enables the novel coronavirus to infect healthy cells in men. This may help to explain why men are more vulnerable to COVID-19 than women, according to the researchers.

The study, published in the European Heart Journal, also found that heart failure patients taking drugs targeting the renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system (RAAS), such as angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitors or angiotensin receptor blockers (ARBs), did not have higher concentrations of ACE2 in their blood.

“Our findings do not support the discontinuation of these drugs in COVID-19 patients as has been suggested by earlier reports,” said study co-author Adriaan Voors from the University of Groningen in the Netherlands.

Some recent research suggested that RAAS inhibitors might increase concentrations of ACE2 in plasma the liquid part of blood thereby increasing the risk of COVID-19 for cardiovascular patients taking these drugs.

The current study indicates that this is not the case, although it looked only at ACE2 concentrations in plasma, not in tissues such as lung tissue.

“ACE2 is a receptor on the surface of cells. It binds to the coronavirus and allows it to enter and infect healthy cells after it is has been modified by another protein on the surface of the cell, called TMPRSS2,” Voors said.

“High levels of ACE2 are present in the lungs and, therefore, it is thought to play a crucial role in the progression of lung disorders related to COVID-19,” he added.

For the findings, the researchers measured ACE2 concentrations in blood samples taken from two groups of heart failure patients from 11 European countries.

There were 1,485 men and 537 women in the first group, the index cohort, which was designed to test the researchers’ hypotheses and research questions. Then the researchers validated their findings in the second group of 1,123 men and 575 women, the validation cohort.

The research team assessed the number of clinical factors that could play a role in ACE2 concentrations, including the use of ACE inhibitors, a history of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, and coronary artery by-pass graft.

They found that male sex was the strongest predictor of elevated ACE2 concentrations. ACE2 is found not only in the lungs, but also in the heart, kidneys and the tissues lining blood vessels, and there are particularly high levels in the testes.

The researchers speculate that its regulation in the testes might partially explain higher ACE2 concentrations in men, and why men are more vulnerable to COVID-19.

Last month, the study, published in the journal Frontiers in Public Health, found that men are more than twice as likely to die from the disease as compared to women.

Another study from the American Journal of Respiratory and Critical Care Medicine showed that males over 50 with non-communicable chronic diseases such as hypertension, diabetes, and coronary heart disease are at greater risk of death from coronavirus.

Total COVID-19 positive cases In India

The milestones being touched by the COVID-19 positive cases being registered in India are actually painting a gloomy picture. Today, if we look at the numbers, Maharashtra has 1018 cases and both Delhi, Kerala has 576 and 336 cases respectively, as India headed into the 5000 clubs with 5351 cases (4,789 being the officially announced figure).

There are 4739 active cases in them while 455 recovered from the virus infection and 157 died due to it. Maharashtra has seen 150 new cases today with 888 total number of active cases from 1018 confirmed total cases and Tamil Nadu has 69 new cases with 644 active cases from 690 total cases.

Andhra Pradesh has less number of new cases today, 11 with a total number of 314 cases and 3 deaths. The number of coronavirus cases in Telangana is not slowing down as the state has more than 40 new cases today making it a total of 404.

Right now, more and more testing is being done everywhere which is projecting that the cases will be doubled very soon. On that note, many asymptomatic and fresh cases might be caused by community spreading will be out.

Right now, India is under the 21-day lockdown since March 25 and many states have proposed the lockdown be extended for a couple of months more. Going by the numbers, it looks like Centre will also favor the extension of lockdown only.

11 Essential Benefits of Vitamin D

0

Vitamin D is necessary for the proper functioning of our body system. It is available in several foods as well as direct sunlight. Strong bones can be had via vitamin D intake.
Vitamin D (calciferol) is a fat-soluble vitamin that is, of course, essential for human health. It increases the metabolism and absorption of calcium and phosphorus.
Important Sources of Vitamin D

Ultraviolet rays from the sun do increase the speed of production of vitamin D in the skin. Fifteen minutes of sun exposure a day is sufficient to complete the vitamin D requirement.
Vitamin D is found in foods such as mackerel, sardines, and salmon fish. Other good sources include butter, egg yolks, cod liver oil, and oily fish.

1. Controls Phosphate & Calcium LevelsCalcium and phosphate are required for body functioning.
The deficiency of vitamin D means the body is unable to control phosphate and calcium levels. The body may tend to generate other hormones to encourage the release of phosphate and calcium from the bones in case the levels of these minerals in the blood become very low. This causes weakening and softening of the bones.

2.Treats Rickets
Rickets is a skeletal disorder caused by the deficiency of vitamin D, phosphate, as well as calcium. It is identified by an X-ray examination of the bones in one’s legs. Rickets can be treated with an extra dose of oral vitamin D.

3.Treats Osteomalacia
The four main components of the human bone are:
• Minerals
• Calcium
• Phosphorus
• A combination of collagen, osteoclasts (bone-removing cells), and osteoblasts (bone-manufacturing cells)
Osteomalacia means soft bones and means bones that are weak or brittle.
4.Prevents Peripheral Arterial Disease
Peripheral artery disease (PAD) occurs when there is a circulatory issue that does keep the blood from flowing properly to the limbs as it normally would. Limbs do not get enough blood.
Vitamin D does reduce the chance of peripheral arterial disease.

5.Anticancer Potential
A high intake of vitamin D can slow down the progression of various types of cancers and cardiovascular diseases. It helps to protect against cancers of the prostate, lung, skin, and lymphoma.

6.Prevents Disabling Fractures
Vitamin D-rich diets do reduce the chances of disabling fractures. As we grow older there is a greater risk of osteoporosis and other vitamin deficiencies that can indeed lead to bones being broken more easily.
7.Treats Rachitic Rosary
Vitamin D helps treat rachitic rosary, which manifests in bead-like bumps seen at the joints of the ribs with their cartilages. This health condition is often found in people already suffering from rickets, scurvy, or chondrodystrophy. It is a lack of calcium that causes an overgrowth of the joint cartilage. Vitamin D is a natural way to treat the problem.

8.Healthy bones
Vitamin D regulates calcium and maintenance of phosphorus levels in one’s blood and thus is vital for maintaining healthy bones.
In adults, vitamin D deficiency does manifest as osteomalacia or softening of the bones. Vitamin d benefits, vitamin d is good for strong bones.

9. Reduced risk of flu
Vitamin d benefits, vitamin d are beneficial to control the flu.

10. Healthy infants
Vitamin D deficiency has indeed links to high blood pressure in children.

11. Healthy pregnancy
Pregnant women who are deficient in vitamin D may rather have a greater risk of developing preeclampsia and giving birth preterm.
Doctors also do associate poor vitamin D status with gestational diabetes and bacterial vaginosis in pregnant women. Vitamin d benefits, vitamin d is needed by the human body.
