Friday saw the successful launch of Reliance Jio’s first giga-fibre service in India, which uses satellite technology to deliver high-speed, reasonably priced Internet access to remote regions of the nation.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi witnessed the demonstration of JioSpaceFiber on the opening day of the “India Mobile Congress 2023.”
In order to gain access to the most advanced medium earth orbit (MEO) satellite technology available, Jio has teamed up with Luxembourg-based SES, the only MEO constellation that can provide gigabit-speed, fiber-like services from space.
“We broaden our scope to encompass the millions who are not yet connected with JioSpaceFiber,” stated Reliance Jio Infocomm Ltd. Chairman Akash Ambani.
With gigabit access to online services for government, education, health, and entertainment, “JioSpaceFiber will allow everyone, everywhere, to fully participate in the new digital society,” Akash Ambani continued.
Currently, Jio serves over 450 million customers with high-speed fixed-line and wireless broadband services.
The availability and scope of Jio True5G will be further improved in the most remote areas of the nation by the additional capacity for mobile backhaul that the satellite network will support.
JioSpaceFiber has already been connected to four of the most remote locations in India: Gir, Gujarat; Korba, Chhattisgarh; Nabarangpur, Odisha; and ONGC-Jorhat, Assam.
“Together with Jio, we are honored to support the Indian government’s ‘Digital India’ initiative with an innovative approach that aims to deliver multiple gigabits per second of throughput to any location in India,” stated John-Paul Hemingway, Chief Strategy Officer at SES.
The speaker continued, saying, “Even in the most remote areas of the nation, we are eager to see how this will lead to digital transformation. In certain regions of India, our initial space-based fiber-like services have already been put into use.”
