Here’s how Shah Rukh Khan perfected that stammer in ‘Darr’

Bollywood superstar Shah Rukh Khan has talked about how he perfected his stammer in the 1993 film ‘Darr’ and revealed how he used to bounce off crazy ideas to nail his villainous act in the Yash Chopra blockbuster.

SRK, on the docu-series ‘The Romantics’, said: “I had a classmate who had a stammer, and then we did some little study, some BBC documentary where they talked about that people’s minds become aware to one sound, and it’s like a sharp current.”

“So, you can’t say the word because you become aware of a sound. Let’s make him aware of the woman he loves the most, her name. So, I only stammer on the word Kiran. It was just for that one word because he’s so aware of her.”

He added: “I had some really fantastically stupid ideas as I remember once going to Adi and saying, can I make this phone call hanging upside down? Adi said ‘Dad won’t allow that.’ Sometimes he would come and tell me to listen I think dad is not going to take a close-up of this.”

“I think you did very well. So, you suggest, if I do it, he’ll turn me down. So, we were like the filters who kind of help each other with Yash Ji.”

‘The Romantics’ has been directed by Oscar & Emmy-nominated film-maker Smriti Mundhra, who returns to Netflix after the phenomenal success of Indian Matchmaking and the Never Have I Ever franchise.

Tom Cruise enjoys ‘fun’ Oscar luncheon, Academy addresses Will Smith’s slap

The 2023 Academy Awards nominees gathered at the 41st Oscar Nominees Luncheon. Taking place roughly a month before the main ceremony, the event saw Hollywood’s biggest stars and filmmakers such as Tom Cruise, Brendan Fraser, Hong Chau, Angela Bassett, Austin Butler, Michelle Williams, and Steven Spielberg greeting each other and posing together.

Cruise, who starred in ‘Top Gun: Maverick’ and is nominated as producer of the film, made his first appearance of the season on the awards circuit that night. He was swarmed by everyone else in the Beverly Hilton International Ballroom and was enjoying the moment. “This is fun,” he told People at one point during the luncheon. “I’m enjoying it.”

The 60-year-old was also seen taking pictures with ‘Elvis’ star Butler, while “Everything Everywhere All at Once” star Ke Huy Quan reunited with Spielberg, who directed him in “Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom”. The two posed together for a goofy selfie, reports aceshowbiz.com.

On a more serious note, Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences president Janet Yang took the opportunity to address Will Smith’s slap of Chris Rock at last year’s Oscars. “I’m sure you all remember we experienced an unprecedented event at the Oscars,” she told the group, before admitting, “What happened onstage was fully unacceptable, and the response from our organization was inadequate.”

She added: “We learned from this that the Academy must be fully transparent and accountable in our actions, and particularly in times of crisis we must act swiftly, compassionately, and decisively for ourselves and for our industry. You should and can expect no less from us going forward.”

Yang went on to note that the Academy’s efforts to “maintain the highest of standards while creating the changes we wish to see” in the film industry include inspiring young people who want to work in film.

“This is how we create the global film community of the future, one that’s open to ideas and cultures from all corners,” she explained. “I urge us all to focus our efforts on nurturing the extraordinary, brilliant community that we inhabit.”

Yang also told this year’s nominees to stick with the allotted time for their acceptance speeches. “One rule we ask of those privileged to take the stage on Oscar night: the 45-second rule. Your acceptance speech must be 45 seconds tops. We’ve worked really hard to keep all the awards live this year, so we need to keep the speeches short,” she pleaded.

Switzerland celebrates Yash Chopra for presenting its beauty to Indians

Switzerland pays tribute to the late legendary filmmaker Yash Chopra, saluting his contribution to having showcased Switzerland’s beauty to Indians through his films.

The much-awaited Netflix docu-series, ‘The Romantics’, is a celebration of the legacy of Yash Chopra and its cultural impact on Indians over the past 50 years. It is set to release this Tuesday.

Remo Kaser, Director of Sales Jungfrau Railways, Switzerland, said: “The legend, Yash Chopra, has presented the beauty of Switzerland and especially the Jungfrau Region to Indians across the world for generations, through his beautiful, soulful cinema.”

“Indians, who come to Jungfraujoch – Top of Europe year after year, have always spoken to us about how the romantic films of Yash Chopra have pushed them to visit the Jungfrau Region and Interlaken and make memories for a lifetime.”

The Swiss authorities will celebrate Yash Chopra’s legacy across the country, especially in places where the filmmaker shot mega-hits like Darr and Chandni. His son Aditya Chopra also shot the all-time blockbuster, ‘Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge’ in Switzerland.

Every Indian has been enchanted by Switzerland’s snow-capped mountains, lush valleys, and pristine lakes in large part because of Yash Chopra’s films. It is said that he visited Switzerland for his honeymoon and was smitten by the country instantly. The Swiss government has continuously honored the legendary filmmaker through the years.

In 2011, Switzerland’s Jungfrau Railways inaugurated a train named after him – an honor shared only with the railway’s founder, Adolf Guyer.

The train featured his signature and name on a signboard. In May 2016, a bronze statue of Yash Chopra was installed by the Switzerland government as a tribute, near the Congress Centre in Interlaken, a popular tourist spot.

At the prestigious Victoria-Jungfrau Grand Hotel & Spa, a special deluxe cinema-themed suite is named after Yash Chopra.

In 2011, the filmmaker inaugurated the suite. Lake Lauenen, in the Canton of Berne, is referred to as Lake Chopra! The Swiss government honored Yash Chopra with the title of Ambassador of Interlaken, making him the first recipient of the award. He was also bestowed the Swiss Ambassador’s Award.

Remo added: “Switzerland and India have a great bond of mutual respect and admiration and Yash Chopra has played a monumental role in solidifying the relationship between our great nations. Switzerland is only too proud to celebrate his legacy here.”

The Romantics has been directed by Oscar & Emmy-nominated filmmaker Smriti Mundhra.

Netflix, in this four-part docu-series, will feature 35 leading personalities from the film industry, who have closely worked with YRF through its 50-year glorious existence. Interestingly, the reclusive head of the iconic Yash Raj Films, Aditya Chopra, has also recorded his first on-camera interview for ‘The Romantics’.

Shahid Kapoor: Vijay Sethupathi is very childlike and innocent

Bollywood actor Shahid Kapoor, who is gearing up for the release of his show ‘Farzi’, worked with south sensation Vijay Sethupathi for the first time and he shared that he found him to be extremely innocent.

Talking about Vijay, Shahid said on IMDb Original ‘Burning Questions’: “He is very childlike and innocent in the way he comes across. There is a lot of integrity to him as an actor, and he is also unpredictable as an actor. He’s a pure artist; you can just sense it when you work with him. That’s the biggest compliment you can give anybody. It was a pleasure working with him.”

With Farzi streaming in a few days from now, Shahid said, “I am very happy with the show. It takes away a lot of nervousness when you feel satisfied with what you’ve done. I feel very happy with the way it’s turned out and am excited to share it with people. It’s my first time on a digital platform, and I’m excited to see how people respond to that.”

Shahid made his debut in the Hindi film industry 20 years ago.

When asked how he deals with adversity, he shared some words of wisdom. “Adversity is challenging, but when you are challenged, you become a better version of yourself, so it’s an opportunity.” About his biggest challenge to date, he said, “People Management. I think it’s more challenging than what I do.”

In the one film he wants everyone to see, Shahid spoke about a classic. “Jaane Bhi Do Yaaro is a film I’d want everyone to see. It had a dad (Pankaj Kapur), Naseer’s uncle, Satish Kaushik ji, and some fantastic actors. I don’t know how many people have seen it. It even had Vidhu Vinod Chopra as an actor.”

“They were all a bunch of friends who came together and made it. Kundan Shah directed it. It’s one of the funniest films I have seen. It can make me laugh anytime. If you want to have a fun time, just watch it, it’s great!”

He also revealed that ‘Dunki’ is the movie he is looking forward to watching in 2023, as it brings together Shah Rukh Khan and Rajkumar Hirani.

Steven Soderbergh debunks rumour Thandiwe Newton got fired from ‘Magic Mike 3’

‘Magic Mike’s Last Dance’ director Steven Soderbergh is gearing up for its theatrical release with Salma Hayek playing the female lead opposite Channing Tatum, but that wasn’t how the film originally went into production.

The movie started filming with Thandiwe Newton, but she exited the project after only 11 days and was replaced by Hayek, reports ‘Variety’.

A studio spokesperson told Variety at the time that Newton exited the film “to deal with family matters,” but outlets like Page Six ran with headlines that claimed it was an on-set fight between Tatum and Newton that got her fired from the movie.

Rumors circulated the two actors had an explosive fight over Will Smith slapping Chris Rock at the Oscars. Soderbergh now told Rolling Stone that none of the headlines he saw about Newton’s exit were factual, reports ‘Variety’.

“Nothing I ever saw was accurate, and there’s really no upside for anybody involved in litigating this or excavating it because I consider it private,” Soderbergh said.

“Everything I saw publicly was wrong. It was just…I don’t think anybody sees any benefit in running through this publicly. It becomes something you can’t control. Right now, to keep it private means all of us can control it, and I think that’s where it should sit for the time being.”

In ‘Magic Mike’s Last Dance’, Hayek stars as a woman in a relationship with Tatum’s eponymous stripper. Hayek’s character pushes Mike to start a male stripper revue in London. Soderbergh took inspiration from Tatum’s real-life ‘Magic Mike stage production in Las Vegas, ‘Magic Mike Live’.

“The film is showing up at a good time because it’s such a joyful movie,” Soderbergh recently told Variety.

“I’m also curious if there is a space still for a mid-range movie budget aimed at adults – one that’s not by standard definition a fantastic spectacle.”
