‘Bollywood’s Hanuman looks like a Musalman’: ‘Boycott Adipurush’ trends on social media

After “Laal Singh Chaddha” and “Brahmastra”, another Bollywood movie has run into rough weather, with “Boycott Adipurush” trending on social media, days after its teaser got released.

The excitement for Om Raut’s film “Adipurush” — starring Saif Ali Khan, Prabhas, and Kriti Sanon — was quite high ever since it was announced. However, just a few hours after the release of the teaser, the netizens began criticizing the film for Saif’s “Islamic” look, unconvincing VFX, and also the costumes of the other cast targeted.

Comparisons are also being made with Lord Hanuman from Ramanand Sagar’s serial “Ramayan” to “Adipurush”. Actor Devdatta Gajanan Nage is playing the role of Hanuman in the movie.

The netizens have claimed that Hanuman’s look in the film also has similarities with the Islamic attire.

A user tweeted, “Bollywood’s Hanuman Looks Like A Musalman #BoycottAdipurush.” Another one wrote, “After 35 years, gutter Bollywood converted the ‘gracefulness’ of arrogant Ravana and Hanuman Ji into Mughals.”

“Hanuman in Ramayan. Musalman in #Adipurush, Note: No Hindu keeps a beard without a Moustache. This film should be banned… They are defaming our Ramayan. They are showing Ravana and Hanuman with beards as Mughals with no Tika on their foreheads,” added one.

Earlier, on Tuesday, Madhya Pradesh Home Minister Narottam Mishra reportedly expressed his anguish over the portrayal of the gods in the film.

Mishra said that the Hanuman was shown wearing leather clothes while the description of his appearance is clearly given in the Hanuman Chalisa.

“There are objectionable scenes in the teaser. Such scenes hurt religious sentiments. I am writing to maker Om Raut to remove these scenes. If he does not agree, there will be legal action,” the minister was quoted as saying.

“Adipurush” is a retelling of the Ramayana. Prabhas’s character is termed as Raghav, which is another name for Lord Ram. Saif plays Ravana while Janaki (Sita) is played by Kriti Sanon.

The makers of Adipurush have spent a fortune on the visual effects. The film has reportedly been made on a budget of over Rs 400 crore, most of which has been spent on the VFX but, it seems like the output is far from what the audience was expecting.

Chiranjeevi pledges support to brother Pawan Kalyan

Tollywood ‘megastar’ K. Chiranjeevi on Tuesday praised his younger brother, actor-politician Pawan Kalyan as a leader who is known for his sense of commitment, saying that his support will definitely be with him.

Chiranjeevi also stated that Andhra Pradesh needs a leader like Pawan Kalyan and hoped that people will give him an opportunity in the future.

The former Union minister and Congress leader, who has been staying away from politics for the last eight years, made politically significant comments at a media event about his movie ‘Godfather’ released on Wednesday.

“Since childhood, I have known him for his honesty and commitment. This did not get polluted anywhere. We need such a leader,” said Chiranjeevi about his younger brother Pawan Kalyan.

“Which side he will be, where he will be, it will all be decided by people in the future. He definitely has my support,” added Chiranjeevi.

The ‘megastar’ also recalled that he did not like being on one side of politics with his brother on the other. “I withdrew myself and remained silent with the hope that in the future he will emerge (as a leader). I hope people will give him an opportunity. Such a day should come,” he added.

Chiranjeevi was apparently referring to the 2014 elections when he was leading Congress party’s campaign in Andhra Pradesh while Pawan Kalyan was canvassing for the TDP-BJP combine.

Pawan Kalyan, who founded Jana Sena Party (JSP) before the 2014 polls, did not contest but supported the TDP-BJP combine and addressed election rallies in the company of Narendra Modi and Chandrababu Naidu.

In 2019, JSP contested the elections in alliance with BSP and the Left parties. However, Pawan Kalyan’s party could not win a single seat in the 175-member Assembly and he himself was defeated in both the seats he contested.

Popular in Tollywood as a ‘Power Star’, Pawan revived his alliance with BJP after the 2014 polls and is currently working to forge an alliance against the ruling YSR Congress Party (YSRCP).

Chiranjeevi had last week stated that he wants to be away from politics but politics is not going away from him.

He also organized a pre-release event of ‘Godfather’ in Anantapur, a move which was seen as a political signal. Pawan Kalyan had already expressed his desire to contest the next election from Anantapur.

Chiranjeevi entered politics in 2008 by floating Praja Rajyam Party (PRP). However, the party had to bite the dust in 2009 polls as the Congress under Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy retained power in then undivided Andhra Pradesh.

The actor later merged his party with the Congress and in return, the latter made him a Rajya Sabha member and a Union minister.

After Congress was wiped out from Andhra Pradesh in 2014 due to public anger over the state’s division, Chiranjeevi distanced himself from active politics and started focusing on films.

A remake of the Malayalam film ‘Lucifer’, ‘Godfather’ is a political thriller written and directed by Mohan Raja. Bollywood star Salman Khan has also made an appearance in movies made in Hindi and Telugu.

Replying to a query, Chiranjeevi said the dialogues in the movie were not aimed at targeting the present-day politicians. He said that the dialogues are based on the original story and that they had no intention of targeting anyone.

‘Adipurush’ riles up netizens, who call it ‘Rs 500 crore temple run’ over its poor VFX

The highly anticipated teaser of the Prabhas, Kriti Sanon, and Saif Ali Khan-starrer Adipurush’ was unveiled in Ayodhya recently, in line with the film’s theme of the Ramayan. Although the teaser has managed to create a buzz around the film, the cost at which it has done so is something that might worry the makers. The film’s teaser is being mercilessly trolled on social media by the netizens.

The makers of ‘Adipurush’, which has been directed by Om Raut, have spent a fortune on the visual effects. The film has reportedly been made on a budget of over INR 400 crores, most of which has been spent on the VFX but, it seems like the output is far from what the audience was expecting.

People on the Internet are venting their anger after being disappointed by the VFX. The teaser has sparked a meme fest on Twitter and Instagram as the members as having a field day. One user wrote on the Internet, “Hiring Vfx artist from team ‘Oh My Friend Ganesha (sic).”

Calling it a “Pogo” film over its cartoonish look, many people have called out Prabhas for not improving his fitness and using body enhancement through computer graphics. One Twitter user wrote, “700 cr Temple Run (laughing emojis).”

Another one writes, “Exclusive: #Adipurush satellite rights bagged by POGO channel”. “#disappointed with #Adipurush trailer. Only a director like Rajamouli can do justice and portray Shri Ram the way Hindus would want. All others want to mint money in the name of Shri Ram. Plus I don’t want to watch (sic).”

There are also some genuine fans, who want the makers to rework the graphics and save the film from impending doom as it releases in 2023. One such user wrote on Instagram, “I hope they push the release by a year and hope that some wonder kid from Red Chillies VFX (Shah Rukh Khan owned VFX studio) or Prime Focus (again a renowned VFX studio) bless them by coming on board and make this abomination at least watchable on a big screen).”
