Action, gore, good acting: ‘Vikram Vedha’ trailer promises a feast

The trailer of the upcoming film ‘Vikram Vedha’, which stars Saif Ali Khan and Hrithik Roshan in the titular roles, was released by the cast here on Thursday.

Giving a sneak peek of the story, the trailer makes for a compelling watch as it challenges the notion of what’s right and what’s wrong and highlights the grey area that human beings are known for.

The trailer opens with medium shots of Saif and Hrithik with different frame directions as Vijay Raaz spins magic with his voice-over. It introduces us to the characters and their world before it spirals into a full-blown action spectacle with several high-speed shots and cinematic gore for dramatic effect.

Hrithik, who plays the titular character of gangster Vedha, seamlessly gets into the skin of his character with body language, mannerisms, and diction. Saif, on the other hand, looks amazing as the tough cop Vikram, who is in hot pursuit of Vedha.

The film, which also stars Rohit Saraf, Radhika Apte, Yogita Bihani, Sharib Hashmi, and Satyadeep Mishra, is an action-thriller written and directed by Tamil director duo Pushkar-Gayatri.

The story unfolds a cat-and-mouse chase, where Vedha – a master storyteller helps Vikram peel back layers through a series of stories leading to thought-provoking moral ambiguities.

Presented by T-Series and Reliance Entertainment in association with Friday Filmworks and Jio Studios, ‘Vikram Vedha’ is a YNOT Studios Production. The film will hit the big screens globally on September 30.

‘Thalapathy’ shoot: When Kamal helped Rajini outsmart Mani Ratnam!

Tamil Superstar Rajinikanth has now disclosed how actor Kamal Haasan helped him outsmart director Mani Ratnam while shooting for the blockbuster ‘Thalapathy’.

Speaking at the audio and trailer launch of director Mani Ratnam’s magnum opus ‘Ponniyin Selvan 1’, Rajinikanth said: “I wish to share one or two incidents with you now about what happened while working with Mani Ratnam.

“It was the first day of shooting of ‘Thalapathy’. The shooting was happening in Mysore and I arrived at around midnight from Bombay where I had been shooting for a Hindi film. The next morning, I went for make-up and the make-up man said that no make-up was to be put on for me. ‘Just put some foundation,’ is what I was told. I was concerned. I was acting with Mammootty, who looked like a fresh apple. I eventually agreed.

“Then came the question of costumes. The customer arrived with a pair of loose pants and shirts. I told him,’ What is this? Go, tighten the clothes and bring them to me.’. The customer tried to explain, ‘Sir, sir has asked…’. I said to tighten and bring them to me.’ He hesitantly responded.

“Then came the issue of footwear. They had slippers for me, so I asked them, ‘What is this?’ I was wearing my walking shoes. I told them I would shoot them.

“So, when I went before Mani Ratnam for the shot, he asked me, ‘Please change into your costume.’ I told him that I was in costume. He looked at me, from top to bottom, and hesitantly agreed.

“The scene was to be shot on the banks of a river and it was to feature Shobana and me. For a long time, both Shobana and I were ready and, in our positions, waiting for shooting to roll but nothing happened. Director Mani Ratnam, his wife Suhasini, and some other members of the crew were engaged in a deep consultation for a long time.

“Actress Shobana, the prankster that she is, asked me, ‘What are they discussing for so long, sir? Are they planning to remove you and put Kamal Haasan instead?” Eventually, the shot was taken.

“The next day, when my make-up man arrived, I told him, ‘No make-up. They have told me not to put on any makeup.’ I wore the loose clothes and slippers they wanted me to wear and began work.

“But then, shooting was difficult. Every shot would require 12 or 13 takes and I was getting frustrated. The issue was I had stocked expressions that I would use in films. I had ready-made expressions for love, surprise, fear, doubt… When I used them, Mani Ratnam would not agree. He would say, ‘You feel, feel…’

“In my mind, I would wonder what ‘feel, feel…’. So, after a while, when I could no longer handle it, I called up Kamal Haasan and said that it was proving too difficult.

“Kamal laughed on the phone and said, ‘I knew it. I too faced the same problem. I will give you a suggestion. When he asks you to do something, ask him to enact it and show it. Then, sit and pretend to brood over it and then exactly replicate what he does and the shot will be okayed.'”

“I did what Kamal said. I would ask Mani Ratnam to enact what he wanted me to do. Pretend as if I was deep in thought, thinking about the scene while smoking cigarettes and finally, reproducing what he had done, exactly in the same fashion. The shot would be okayed.”

Saying this, Rajinikanth turned to Kamal Haasan, who was standing beside him on stage, and said, ‘Thank You Kamal’, even as Mani Ratnam roared with laughter from the audience.

Mani Ratnam has won the competition to make ‘Ponniyin Selvan’ into a film: Kamal Haasan

Stating that there was a competition between him and director Mani Ratnam as to who would make writer Kalki’s classic novel, ‘Ponniyin Selvan’ into a film, actor and politician Kamal Haasan said that the director had won that competition and that one must appreciate him for his determination.

“I knew for a fact that someday ‘Ponniyin Selvan’ would get made into a film. I knew either Mani Ratnam would make it or I would make it,” Kamal said at the grand audio and trailer launch of the event that was held at the Jawaharlal Nehru Indoor stadium in the city on Tuesday.

“In fact, there was a competition between us as to who would make this epic novel into a film. While I made efforts, he continuously kept making efforts and won.

“This is a big successful film. This will be a very important film in Mani Ratnam’s victories list,” Kamal said and went on to recall a time when they (Mani Ratnam and Kamal) used to lean on a motorcycle in his home in Alwarpet and talk wonder if they could ever make films like ‘Sholay’. This is that,” Kamal said.

Congratulating producer Lyca Subashkaran for having produced such a film, Kamal told the producer that this would be one of his most important films as well.

The actor, along with Superstar Rajinikanth, released the trailer of director Mani Ratnam’s ‘Ponniyin Selvan-I ‘ in the presence of a packed stadium at around 11.45 p.m. on Tuesday night.

Rajinikanth, Kamal launch magnificent trailer of Mani Ratnam’s ‘Ponniyin Selvan 1’

Tamil superstars Rajinikanth and Kamal Haasan jointly released a fantastic trailer of director Mani Ratnam’s much ‘waited for the magnum opus, ‘Ponniyin Selvan 1’, which is based on the epic novel by writer Kalki, at the Jawaharlal Nehru Indoor Stadium in the city.

The beautifully cut trailer, which was released just 15 minutes before midnight on Tuesday, promises a glorious film that narrates the story of India’s greatest empire, the Cholas.

The three-minute 30-second-long Tamil trailer begins with Kamal Haasan narrating in the background what the movie has to offer.

“A thousand years ago, before the golden era of the Chola empire dawned, a comet appeared in the Chola sky. The Oracles predict that the comet would claim the life of someone from the Royal family of the Cholas.

“Rivals surround the kingdom. The sea grows turbulent and treachery invades the Chola palace,” Kamal says even as we are treated to a glimpse of some glorious shots by cinematographer Ravivarman.

The trailer introduces Vikram as Aditya Karikalan and then goes on to show Jayam Ravi as Arun Mozhi Varman, who later on goes on to become the great Raja Raja Cholan.

The trailer defines Arun Mozhi’s character by showing him utter one dialogue. He says: “My father commanded me to bear arms for the Chola Kingdom. I am the kingdom’s defender and servant to its people.”

Next to be introduced is Karthi as Vallavarayan Vanthiyathevan. The gifted, street-smart warrior and trusted friend of both Aditha Karikalan and Arunmozhi Varman, says: “I am Aditha Karikalan’s friend. I had the good fortune of fighting shoulder to shoulder, alongside my prince.”

The trailer then goes on to give an idea of the plot. A scene in which Aditya Karikalan tells Vanthiyathevan, “our spies have warned us that an untoward incident is to take place at the Kadambur fort. Find out what is being plotted” is shown.

The trailer gives a glimpse that there are people who are looking to usurp the throne.

We are introduced to Trisha’s character Kundavai, a very smart and capable woman. She tells Vanthiyathevan: “I want you to go to Lanka. Find my brother Arunmozhi and bring him to me.”

Meanwhile, the trailer also gives away the fact that Arun Mozhi Varman has no intention of setting foot in Thanjavur.

And finally, the trailer introduces the audience to one of the most important characters of ‘Ponniyin Selvan’ — Nandini, played by Aishwarya Rai Bachchan.

The trailer shows Nandini looking to thwart Aditya Karikalan and Arunmozhi Varman from joining forces. She says to her husband: “We have to ensure that Arunmozhi Varman and Karikalan do not join forces.”

The brilliant trailer has heightened expectations from the film, the first part of which is to hit screens on September 30.
