Man on a Mission: How ‘Rocking Star’ Yash gave a new life to Kannada cinema

After the demise of legendary actor Dr. Rajkumar, many had raised doubts about the survival of the Kannada film industry.

Despite delivering back-to-back super hits that competed with the best cinemas in India, the Kannada film industry was always seen as “inferior” compared to Telugu, Tamil, Hindi, and Malayalam industries.

Now, with the ‘KGF Chapter-1’ and ‘KGF Chapter-2’ movies, for the first time since its inception, the Kannada film industry has asserted itself at the national and international levels in terms of commercial success and acceptability. Thanks to superstar Yash, fondly known as Rocking Star Yash, who made it possible.

Six years ago, no one believed Yash when he repeatedly spoke about delivering a super hit movie. He would say that the movie would be such that the audience will not stop whistling and clapping. Even when news channels forced him to attend debates after telecasting news against him, he kept saying he does not have time, big projects are being lined up and he needs to focus.

People are now realizing what Yash was trying to convey to them then. Hailing from a middle-class family, Yash, passionate about cinemas, started his career in theatre. It did not take him very long to reach the small screen and thereafter, the big screen. He remained composed throughout, went on to win the hearts of people with his movies, and achieved superstardom in the Kannada film industry. Soon, he started working on his dream project KGF Chapter-1. The rest, as they say, is history.

Rashmi. S., Executive Editor of Raj News and Chief of Raj Kannada Music channel says that Yash’s journey to superstardom is similar to the character he played in his first movie Moggina Manasu”.

“In the movie the character of Yash aspires to be a singer. He sacrifices his love for his career in the movie. Yash and Radhika fall in love with each other during the shoot. Yash sits with Radhika and talks to her about dedicating 10 years to their career. Both get married after becoming most sought-after actors,” she explains.

Yash started his work as an associate director and knows the nuances of technicalities. He sits for editing throughout and gives keen attention to music, and background music. Until the movie gets ready for release, Yash is totally engrossed with it.

One can see that desperateness, that yearning for churning out a good product. That passion and dedication have made him what he is today, she says.

Director and Producer Sudhakar Bhandari remembers how Yash played the role of guardian angel for their super hit movie ‘Rangitaranga’. “Yash saw rushes and appreciated our work. He also gave a promotional bite which helped the movie before release,” he says.

Once the movie was ready, Yash was the first to watch it. He suggested reducing the duration of the film by 10 minutes and told us that it would be a super hit. Later, about 12 minutes of editing was done and the movie went on to become a super hit and won accolades at international levels.

“Yash is a good judge. His sense of editing is sharp. He knows the art of choosing good subjects. His passion towards cinema is too deep. He always believed that the Kannada film industry is on par with any other industry in the nation. A big hats off to him,” he says.

Bhuvan Gowda, the KGF Chapter-2 fame cinematographer, who was with Yash throughout the journey of the KGF series, says: “I had made a portfolio of Yash and poster shoot for his movie ‘Gajakesari’. After seeing the result, Yash hired me cinematographer to his ‘Masterpeice’ and journey continued in ‘KGF Chapter-1’ and ‘KGF Chapter – 2’.”

Rocking Star Yash always dreams about his work. He is passionate about the work and he would speak endlessly about cinema like how to develop shots, and dialogue corrections, he says.

On several occasions, there would be technical glitches during the shoot of KGF Chapter 2. In case of problems, Yash would always ask me to take 10 more shots when asked for one, he remembers.

To ensure that the script comes on screen as it is, he would push all departments and guide them too. He would talk about scaling up the movie to the national level for a very long time, he says.

Kannada movies were categorized as ordinary and no one cared to watch them. They would talk about poor quality and low budget. KGF Chapter-2 saw full house shows in Jammu and Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh and in a place like Bhubaneshwar, the movie was exhibited to full shows for seven days. Audiences are celebrating in the US, Russia, “what more we want” he explains.

The Kannada film industry is galvanized by the success of KGF Chapter-2. More and more pan-India projects are being launched. No one is even talking about the survival of the Kannada film industry after Yash proved his mettle.

Kangana Ranaut: Instead of Hindi, Sanskrit should be the national language

Amid the controversy over Hindi involving actors Ajay Devgn and Kichha Sudeep, actress Kangana Ranaut says considering Sanskrit is older than Hindi, Sanskrit should be the national language.

However, she explained why in her opinion, denying Hindi as the national language is indirectly a disrespect to the central government and the Indian Constitution.

The actress was interacting with the media on Friday during the trailer launch of her upcoming film ‘Dhakkad’.

Asked her opinion on the Hindi language controversy, Kangana said, “Firstly we all have the right to feel proud of our language, roots, and culture. But our country is culturally and language-wise very diverse. So we need one common language to bring them together. When the Indian Constitution was made, Hindi was made a national language. Now see, technically speaking, Tamil is an older language than Hindi. But the oldest one is the Sanskrit language. So, in my opinion, Sanskrit should be the national language, not Hindi.”

She went on to add, “Having said that I do not have the answer why instead of Sanskrit, why Hindi is chosen as the national language. But now that the decision is made, if you do not obey it, you are denying the Constitution.”

Then she brings in the political angle and explained her thoughts.

“If Khalistanis ask for a separate state, Tamils and people of Bengal are asking for a separate state, they are not defying just Hindi, they are defying the central government of Delhi. Despite the dark colonial past, we still use English as a linking language to communicate inside the country. Should English be that link, or Hindi, Tamil, or Sanskrit should be the language? We have to decide that.” said the ‘Dhakkad’ actress.

Referring to the controversy between Ajay and Sudeep, Kangana believes that both the actors are right in their own way.

“Hindi is our national language, so whatever Ajay sir said is right. But I understand the sentiment of Sudeep and he is not wrong either,” she explained.

Director Arun Matheswaran on why he chose to cast Keerthy Suresh in ‘Saani Kaayidham’

Director Arun Matheswaran says that he chose to cast Keerthy Suresh in the lead role of his eagerly-awaited film ‘Saani Kaayidham’ after watching her performance in ‘Mahanati’.

The director, who is back with ‘Saani Kaayidham’ after surprising everyone with a firecracker of a debut film called ‘Rocky’, says, “I watched ‘Mahanati’ and loved Keerthy Suresh’s performance in the film. So, I had her in my mind for ‘Saani Kaayidham’.

“Moreover, the role she plays in my film is one such character that she hasn’t done before. So, I thought she would be the right choice, who brings in a breath of fresh air with some wildness. She was the first choice and I am glad she came onboard.”

Not only did the director take a leap of faith with his leading lady, he also was quite confident about who he wanted to cast as her brother. Veteran director Selvaraghavan, who is also the elder brother of actor Dhanush, has played that role in the film.

Says Arun, “Selva Sir is a big name in the industry and a well-known director. I thought it would be a wild option to cast him.”

Revealing his thoughts while approaching the director to act in ‘Saani Kaayidham’, Arun says, “Siddharth (creative producer) is close friends with Selva sir. So, it was easy to approach him. Everyone had their apprehensions since he hasn’t acted in any film before nor was he interested. But I just wanted to give it a shot, so I met him and narrated the story and he loved it.”

Continuing about his experience of directing a director, Arun adds, “I saw him as a director and was sceptical if he would give suggestions or if we would go into an awkward zone where we wouldn’t understand each other, but nothing of that sort happened. He trusted me completely.”

Produced under the banner of Screen Scene Media Entertainment, ‘Saani Kaayidham’ will premiere worldwide exclusively on Prime Video on 6 May. The film will also be available as ‘Chinni’ in Telugu and as ‘Saani Kaayidham’ in Malayalam.
