Rani Mukerji: Films portray women the way society sees them

She made her acting debut with the Bengali film ‘Biyer Phool’ in 1996 and entered Bollywood the same year with ‘Raja Ki Aayegi Baraat’. Rani Mukerji, who has been in the industry for over 25 years, has talked about how in Bollywood the definition of a “heroine” has changed over the years.

Rani, who has always wooed the audiences with her power-packed performances, says actresses have always been showcased in a “dynamic” way and that films “portray women in the way the society sees them”.

Talking to IANS about it, Rani, who has impressed the audience and critics alike with her impactful skills in movies such as ‘Hey Ram’, ‘Saathiya’, ‘Black’, ‘Mardaani’ and ‘Hichki’ among many others, said: “For me, a heroine has always been a quintessential Hindi film heroine. I don’t think anything has changed.”

“If you see the graph of film actresses from the ’40s or from ’50s, you will see that Indian women were always portrayed in a very dynamic way…barring a few because every time your film has to reflect society as such. So, if you seen the growth in India…you have seen the growth in the films as well in all characters and stories.”

Rani added: “Things have changed with the times so I think films portray women in the way that the society sees them, the way they are right now and with each passing year that’s what has happened and shown in films.”

Having been in the industry for over two decades, Rani does not “feel” it.

“When somebody says 25 years I say ‘oh really!’ because for me it just doesn’t feel like it is 25 years. Time has really flown I feel. I still remember my first day on my first film, I still remember my ‘Ghulam’ days, ‘Kuch Kuch Hota Hai’…”

She added: “So, it’s really crazy that somebody says 25 years…I say ‘don’t say na 25 years’ it’s making me feel like I am here forever’.”

Rani, who is married to the head honcho of Yash Raj Films Aditya Chopra and has a daughter named Adira, has reprised her role of Babli/Vimmy in the latest release ‘Bunty Aur Babli 2’.

Is their any pressure to up her own game every time she comes on screen?

Pat came the reply: “Absolutely”.

That’s the fun of it, feels Rani.

“That’s the fun I feel for my craft you see because when I kind of work in a film that challenges me as an artiste that is what drives me. That is what makes me kind of excited about going back on set and trying to deliver something I don’t think I will be able to do it unless or until I reach the set. So, there is always that excitement you know.”

‘Radhe Shyam’ makers bank on Prabhas, opt for muted hype compared to Sankranti rivals

‘Radhe Shyam’, the Prabhas star vehicle, slated for a Sankranti 2022 release, is up against ‘RRR’ and ‘Bheemla Nayak’, but unlike the competition, it is not as much visible on social media as its fans would like it to be.

When ‘Ee Raathale’, the first single from the Telugu time travel drama set in the backdrop of Europe of the 1970s, was released some time back, there was some euphoria over the upcoming movie, but then it died down and the competition took over.

The song showed Prabhas and his female lead, Pooja Hegde, and it was well-received by the media, but since then, there’s been radio silence from the makers of ‘Radhe Shyam’. Sources close to them say they are confident that they can bank on the ‘Baahubali’ star’s charisma to turn the film into a superhit.

Prabhas, incidentally, plays a palmist who can sense the future in this film directed by Radha Krishna Kumar.

There are moments from every shoot that stay with an actor and linger on their minds. Sharing one such incident from ‘Aarya 2’, Sushmita said, “As we move along, in this journey of showing and telling people the making and the process, eventually you are going to find many of those incidents on record. Well, there is a particular scene we shot at a helipad in Jaipur, this scene had a formulation.”

The scene in question was a 24-minute-long take that was shot in one go and with a lot of variations. The actress added, “It was a very important sequence for Season 2. You would be aware that in Rajasthan, it doesn’t rain off season but just at the end of every 24-minute-long take, it thundered and it rained, just for us! We got this amazing background score and our director (Ram Madhvani) who loves environmental sounds said it couldn’t have been better. So, this is the high point for ‘Aarya’ for all of us and that particular day remains a very memorable one for us.”

‘Clifford the Big Red Dog’ sequel in the works

A sequel to 2021’s family-friendly adventure ‘Clifford the Big Red Dog’ is in development.

Paramount Pictures has not disclosed whether the newest installment will play only in theaters or simultaneously on digital platforms, like the original, reports variety.com.

The first film premiered in theaters earlier in November and has since generated $34 million at the domestic box office while playing concurrently on Paramount Plus.

Though the company didn’t provide any tangible metrics, Paramount says ‘Clifford the Big Red Dog’ has become the nascent streaming service’s most-watched original film to date. It should be noted that Paramount Plus rebranded from CBS All Access last March with limited cinematic offerings, so “Clifford” didn’t have much competition to cement its place as the streamer’s most popular new film.

Based on the popular children’s book series, ‘Clifford the Big Red Dog’ follows 12-year-old Emily Elizabeth, who is gifted a little red puppy.

Much to her surprise, she wakes up to find the petite canine has grown overnight into a giant, 10-foot hound.

The cast includes Jack Whitehall, Darby Camp, Tony Hale and Kenan Thompson.

Walt Becker directed ‘Clifford the Big Red Dog’ from a script by Jay Scherick, David Ronn and Blaise Hemingway.

The film was made in association with Scholastic Entertainment and eOne, the latter of which distributed “Clifford” in Canada and the UK.

‘Bigg Boss Telugu 5’: Eliminated Anee schools VJ Sunny’s fans

The latest evictions in ‘Bigg Boss Telugu 5’ resulted in Anne’s elimination from the show. Anee’s elimination has shocked the inmates as well as her fans, as she was marked as one of the strongest contestants of the season.

Anee, who had been disrespectful with some of the contestants was warned by her inmates, which she conveniently let go of during her stay in ‘Bigg Boss Telugu 5’. Even after her eviction, Anee seems to be carrying the hatred of RJ Kajal, as she is the one who got into the limelight during these fights on the show.

In one of the recent Instagram stories, Anee schooled the viewers, that she played her game. “When people do not have a problem with Sunny, who bursts out on women, I do not understand why my dance is being targeted so much. Whatever, please stop abusing contestants who are against your favourite players”, Anne said.

Anee also mentioned that she had a conversation with Anchor Ravi’s wife. “I spoke to Ravi’s wife Nithya. She told me that Sunny’s fans are abusing their daughter. A five-year-old! Please use your values. Stop targeting a kid”, Anne said in anguish.

Anee’s words do count, as online bullying has no limits, and it is never acceptable to bully anyone. But, Anee has not realised that she did the same bullying while on the show. Kajal indicated that she has been hurt, but Anee turned a deaf ear then. As she is out now, she has started preaching, many say.
