Monica Dogra: Have said no to item numbers many times

Actress Monica Dogra made her mark with her Bollywood debut film, Kiran Rao’s Dhobi Ghat, in 2011. However, despite a few other releases, she never really managed to find a foothold in the industry.

After being seen in a couple of films such as David (2013) and Teraa Surroor (2016), Monica will be back in action in the web series, The Married Woman.

On her part, Monica says she has never liked the way women are objectified in Bollywood films and has especially steered clear of dance numbers. “Item song is a no-no for me. I have said no many times. I am personally not interested in representing a woman as an object. I think we are so much more than that. I just wouldn’t do an item song,” she says.

Her upcoming series is an urban relationship drama showcasing the conditions levied on a woman by society. It is about women and the choices they make. Talking about the show, Monica says she was on board with the idea instantly, as the story really appealed to her.

“The initial meeting with the producers and the writers was brilliant. The way they described the characters excited me to play someone so dynamic and layered. The show is so relevant for today,” she says.

Monica shares a kiss with co-star Riddhi Dogra in the show. Ask her if she feels the Indian audience will accept and appreciate such a plot, she says: “I don’t go into something thinking whether people will accept it or not. I was aware of the obstacle. I think it is wisdom that teaches you to be aware of that.”

She continues: “Personally, I am someone who feels passionately about the transformative power of art. Art and artists have the responsibility to be the change and inspire people. I did not have apprehensions, I was so excited to tell a story which was this honest knowing that there was no way that this story won’t open people’s hearts and transform the way they feel and view love, religion, and politics.”

The series has been directed by Sahir Raza and will air on ALTBalaji and ZEE5.

Vaani Kapoor: Mentally preparing for a hectic work schedule

Actress Vaani Kapoor has three back-to-back releases in the coming months. She will be seen in Bell Bottom, Shamshera, and Chandigarh Kare Aashiqui.

Vaani says she is mentally preparing herself for an intensely hectic promotion schedule in the coming months. Bell Bottom will release on May 28, Shamshera is set for June 25, and Chandigarh Kare Aashiqui will hit the screens on July 9.

“It is remarkable that I have three back-to-back releases in three months. So, I’m mentally preparing myself for an intensely hectic work schedule when I will promote Bell Bottom, Shamshera, and Chandigarh Kare Aashiqui back to back. I don’t think I will have a single minute for myself over the next five months but I’m not complaining,” said Vaani.

She is excited to present herself in three different avatars in a span of three months.

“What is exciting is the audience will see me in three extremely diverse ways in these projects. I’m only hoping that all these three films are accepted by the audience and play an instrumental role in making people come back to the theatres,” she said.

Vaani expects the audience to come back to the theatres to watch good films that give them an unforgettable experience.

She said: “I have shot for these films during the pandemic. The industry has shown its intent to entertain the audience once Covid subsides. So, it’s really exciting for me to see how the audience supports our films and the industry. We will offer them some of the best films over the next few months, and I’m hoping people will appreciate and head to the theatres to watch these movies.”

Bollywood newcomer Seerat Kapoor on her stint in Telugu films

Actress Seerat Kapoor, the granddaughter of late acting guru Roshan Taneja, is set to make her Bollywood debut after establishing her career in Telugu films. She says that the two industries have a lot of similarities and gives her the opportunity to explore her craft.

The actress, who has been part of successful Telugu films such as “Krishna And His Leela”, “Raju Gari Gadhi 2” or “Maa Vintha Gaadha Vinuma”, will be seen making her Hindi debut alongside Naseeruddin Shah and Tushar Kapoor in the film “Maarrich”.

“As far as the process goes, there are more similarities than differences. Both the industries are it the South or Bollywood play to the strengths of their individual cultures and audiences. From my perspective, there lies an ocean full of opportunities to explore myself as an artist,” she tells IANS.

Asked if she is facing any difficulty in her Hindi film debut, the actress gives a profound answer: “The greater the difficulty, the deeper one experiences a chance to grow.”

Sucheta Khanna: OTT rise won’t affect viewership of TV comedy shows

Actress Sucheta Khanna has made a mark on several comedy shows on television. She says no matter how popular OTT becomes, comedy shows on TV will never lose viewership.

“These shows are evergreen. These are shows the entire family sits and watches together. These kinds of shows are welcomed all over the world. People will always like to watch these shows,” says Sucheta, who is seen in the sitcom Jijaji Chhat Parr Koii Hai.

However, she does admit the rise of OTT has changed viewing patterns on television, too.

“The web has opened up a lot of things. Everything has changed now. The audience has become smart and is looking for more real and quirky content. Earlier it was (all about) caked-up and caricaturish characters but today more realistic content works,” she told IANS.

However, the actor, who has been seen in shows such as Excuse Me Madam and Meri Hanikarak Biwi, adds that caricature comedy also has an audience.

“It is not like it will not work at all. We also have a lot of our audience who come from a rural background and they are connected with TV for a lot of years. But the younger generation has moved to the web and they enjoy rural comedy. There was this movie Ludo where there was this Malayali nurse in it, who was so good. So it’s not about beauty and prettiness or caricature characters. It’s about how funny people actually are,” she said.
