Shweta Basu Prasad all set for Madhur Bhandarkar’s ‘India Lockdown’

She won the National Film Award at the age of 10 as a child artiste for her acting in the film ‘Makdee’ followed by a huge appreciation in the film ‘Iqbal’.

Now, Shweta Basu Prasad is gearing up for Madhur Bhandarkar’s upcoming film as well as more projects lined up, says more than being visible in every project, she seeks quality in every avenue.

In conversation with an interview, Shweta said, “I have grown up around cinema, on set as well as in my home because both my parents are huge movie buffs. In my growing years since I observed and learned from veterans like Shabana Azmi, Naseeruddin Shah, I have understood the importance of doing quality work. So, now when with OTT I see so many projects in making, I would rather choose the one that has quality.”

In recent times, she has appeared in the short film ‘Yatri Kripya Dhyan De’ and web series like ‘Ray’, ‘High’, ‘Hostages’, films like ‘Comedy Couple’, ‘Serious Men’, ‘The Tashkent Files’, and ‘Mard Ko Dard Nahi Hota’.

Asked about what keeps her busy now and she replied, “I am actually shooting for three web series that will soon be announced. Without an official announcement, I cannot really speak about them elaborately. I am also waiting for the release of Madhur Bhandarkar’s upcoming film ‘India Lockdown’ that should be released this year.”

‘Yatri Kripya Dhyan De’ is streaming on Amazon mini tv.

OTT debutante Kangana Ranaut opens the doors as host of ‘Lock Upp’

After giving a number of Bollywood hits, Kangana Ranaut is again gaining all the attention for her OTT debut with the fearless reality show ‘Lock Upp’.

As she says: “A show of this production value and this kind of magnitude and this kind of scale needed to be seen with a maximum reach of people and as much as we can. OTT platforms are coming up in India and especially homegrown ones and MX player has an incredible reach, different gamut of audience and subscribers so does ALT. And they clubbed and combined together and decided to do it in a bigger way. I was game for that.”

When asked, if the show is going to be a family watch, she replies: “Yes, it is definitely a family watch but by family do you mean children? I’m not sure about that. But the beauty of OTT is that it is a very personalized experience. You can have your headphones on and you can see it with your partner, your girlfriend, and if you have a certain comfort with your parents.”

“It is something that can be enjoyed with like-minded people. And the nature of the show is such that a lot of controversial people are going to be put together under testing circumstances. So, nobody really knows where it can get. But it is going to be unpredictable. So, there is no definite answer to it, yes or no. But at the same time I feel that one should see which way it goes,” she adds.

There are a number of controversial people parts of the show and dealing with them as a host can be tricky sometimes. How Kangana will deal with them if they show any kind of disrespect towards her or create drama.

The ‘Queen’ actress answers: “They’re very edgy controversial celebrities. And yes, some of them have been a part of major controversies. Of course, when you go to correct them and if you scratch the surface they get volatile, they get absolutely completely into the attacking mode and they do not see who comes before that and it can be the host also. In TV, they might delete a showdown like that, but in digital, it is not going to be deleted because that is the nature of digital so I am quite aware that some of these celebrities are going to lose control.”

“And they’re going to be all over the place and some might even subject me to their volatile nature, some sort of wrath. I’m not going to have anybody tell me what to do and I am the host and I should have the last word and I know how to exert my place and I know how to, you know for the lack of better word, I know how to be a ‘queen’.”

Moving ahead Kangana replies to her show being compared to ‘Bigg Boss’ and like ‘Bigg Boss’ has been recently blamed for favoring a few contestants, ‘Lock Upp’ will also have some favorites of her.

Kangana says: “See ‘Bigg Boss’ and all are TV shows and they have contestants on them. We are not talking about contestants here, we’re talking about ‘kaidis’ and they are in jail. I will have the final word and I will choose the winner.”

She adds on if she will have her favorite: “Yes of course it is as it’s human nature to resonate with certain people and do not resonate with certain people. But that will not affect my decision. I’m a very objective person. And I feel the winner should be somebody who is probably not the definition of winners we have seen so far in reality shows.”

“But someone who’s out there and knows how to deal with life, who’s spontaneous, who’s fun and at the same time is innocent and pure. This is going to be the winner of ‘Lock Upp Season 1’ and I am sure that I will favor such a person and such a person will be my favorite as well. The winner will be somebody who I like,” she says.

Kangana is quite vocal about nepotism and she has spoken about it in the promo as well. But the producer of the show Ekta Kapoor, who is the daughter of Bollywood’s popular actor Jeetendra has often tried to take her place in the industry without using her father’s name, how Kangana reacts to this and if she agrees?

And she says: “Well people come with certain advantages and disadvantages in every situation. I’ve said that nepotism is not the issue here. We can’t stop people from doing what they want to do. Ekta is the rightful heir of her father in every way of his name, fame, glory, his assets in every way and nobody can deny that and it should not be anybody’s concern either, right? I mean, why should anybody object to that?

“But the problem with the film industry is not that they pass on their wealth, whether it is name, fame, or assets to the children. No, the problem that I face was actually that I was bullied in the film industry, and everybody has seen that I was asked to leave the film industry openly in the national newspapers.”

“I was told that please leave the film industry. They said, ‘It is not for you and you know, all that. So, there have been public showdowns where people have told me that I don’t belong here. I was mocked for my English; I was mocked for coming from the mountains. My journey through my journey, I’ve seen that.”

“But I’ve never seen Ekta being part of any bully gang. She worked with me in my initial years. She’s the first one to give me my first A-lister project. So for me, I have huge respect for her. And, of course, she has come up on her own and she’s very, very successful as a woman and as a producer. She inspires me and I hold back. I always tell her that you are the prototype of how one should be if you grew up in privileged families,” the actress shares on her bond with Ekta Kapoor.

At last, Kangana talks about her upcoming film ‘The Incarnation – Sita’ in which she will portray the mythical character and if she would like to work in a sequel to ‘The Dirty Picture as there was a rumor that she denied being part of it.

“I do not think I would, I’m doing a film called ‘The Incarnation – Sita’ and to keep the sentiments of people in mind and to not complicate things for professional gains. I would like to stay away just for the sentiments of people and because I give my all to something that I do at a time and ‘The Incarnation – Sita’ is something that means a lot to me. I feel it’s a blessing and ‘Dirty Picture 2’, knowing the very name that suggests that it has a quality of erotica. It’ll be huge if it’s made, but honestly, I don’t feel I’m the right person for it anymore. So, I will let it pass,” she concludes.

UNDP partners with Bhumi Pednekar for gender equality ahead of Women’s Day

Ahead of International Women’s Day, the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) in collaboration with the Ministry of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship, intends to implement a year-long social campaign for which it has roped in Bollywood actress Bhumi Pednekar.

For the program ‘Women at Work – Gender Equality Today for a Sustainable Future Tomorrow’, Bhumi will raise awareness with regards to several issues like equipping young women to challenges and opportunities in non-traditional roles and career paths, the importance of creating an eco-system to promote non-traditional aspirations for young women, role of government, businesses, NGOs, CSOs and individuals (influencers) and the importance of peer support to women working.

Commenting on the occasion, Bhumi says, “Our career pathways and choices are often influenced by people around us and their expectations of us. It limits our aspirations; our potential to truly achieve what we can. This is especially relevant for women and girls given the rigorous social conditioning that they experience.”

She further states how greater representation of women in the workforce is the need of the hour, “The need for more women in the workforce is not only an economic imperative but a social one as well. Our workspaces need to be inclusive, encouraging diverse skill sets and expertise. This can be made possible when women occupy spaces in leading roles, breaking stereotypes, and barriers inspiring others especially, young girls to aspire and realize their full potential.”

Sharing her thoughts on the association with UNDP, the actress says, “I’m very pleased to be part of UNDP’s International Women’s Day campaign on Women at Work raising the important issue of leadership roles for women in the workspace and equal opportunities for all.”

“Through my movies, I have portrayed different characters that provide an alternative to stereotyping of female actors, fully aware that cinema can have a lasting impression on people. I look forward to contributing my part to creating conversations on this theme during my association with UNDP”, she concludes.

Mahesh Babu’s PLHF to facilitate treatment for kids with congenital heart diseases

Firmly believing that tiny hearts deserve the greatest care, Telugu superstar Mahesh Babu has now launched a foundation called the Pure Little Hearts Foundation (PLHF) at the Rainbow Children’s Heart Institute (RCHI) which will look to provide cardiac care for children.

The actor’s Mahesh Babu Foundation has joined forces with the RCHI for the noble initiative, as part of which economically-challenged children with congenital heart diseases would be treated at PLHF.

In India, congenital heart diseases account for 10 out of every 1,000 births. So, more than 200,000 children are born every year with congenital heart diseases.

Approximately one-fifth of these infants are likely to have a serious birth defect, requiring intervention during the first year.

Families of a majority of such kids are unable to afford quality children’s cardiac care, leading to significant morbidity and mortality. Learning about this, Mahesh Babu, through his Foundation, has now collaborated with Rainbow Children’s Heart Institute and launched the Pure Little Hearts Foundation.

Speaking at the launch of the foundation, Mahesh Babu said, “Children have always been close to my heart. I am happy to support children who need cardiac care at RCHI through the Mahesh Babu Foundation. Tiny hearts deserve the greatest care.”

Mahesh Babu has been a strong supporter of causes that save sick children. The actor, through his foundation, has facilitated heart operations for over 1,000 children through Andhra Hospitals.

Meanwhile, the actor is associated with the ‘Heal A Child’ Foundation that supports kids who have no financial support and can’t afford medical expenses.

Mahesh Babu, who adopted the Burripalem and Siddapuram villages in Andhra Pradesh and Telangana respectively, has been lending a helping hand with health and hygiene programs and has been responsible for creating social awareness in these villages through his Mahesh Babu Foundation.

Telangana HC slaps Rs 10 lakh cost on filmmaker seeking stay on ‘Jhund’

The Telangana High Court on Friday slapped a cost of Rs 10 lakh on Hyderabad-based filmmaker Nandi Chinni Kumar who had filed a petition seeking a stay on the release of Amitabh Bachchan-starrer “Jhund”.

The court directed Kumar to pay the amount to PM Covid-19 Relief Fund within a month. In the event of the petitioner failing to pay the amount, the district collector would recover the same under Revenue Recovery Act within 30 days and remit it to the PM Fund.

A bench of Chief Justice Satish Chandra Sharma and Justice Abhinand Kumar Shavili, which had already declined to stall the release of the movie, asked counsel for the petitioner as to why he suppressed information pertaining to the case he had filed at a lower court on the same subject.

The court was told that a compromise had already arrived between the makers of the movie and Kumar. As part of this, Kumar was paid Rs 5 crore.

However, Kumar approached the high court, seeking a stay on the release of “Jhund”, claiming that the settlement was due to the wrong inducement.

“Jhund”, a biographical sports film based on the life of Vijay Barse, the founder of NGO Slum Soccer’, was released in theaters on Friday.

Barse is the coach of Akhilesh Paul and Kumar claims that he bought exclusive rights in November 2017 to make a movie titled “Slum Soccer” on the life of Akhilesh Paul.

He said though director Nagraj Manjule and producers bought rights to make a movie on the life of Barse, “Jhund” also showcases Paul’s story in a major role, thus allegedly violating the copyright. Kumar had filed a suit in a city court in 2020, seeking a stay on the release of the movie.
