Rajinikanth praises ‘Annaatthe’ director Siva, says he delivered a hit as promised

Stating that his recently released ‘Annaatthe’ was a film that he could not forget in his life, megastar Rajinikanth on Monday showered praises on the film’s director Siva, saying he had delivered a hit just as he promised he would.

The actor put out two voice messages on Hoote, an app launched by his daughter Soundarya Rajinikanth, in which he spoke at length about how the decision to make ‘Annaatthe’ was taken.

Stating that he was mighty impressed with Siva’s earlier film ‘Viswasam’, which released on the same day that his ‘Petta’ released, Rajini says he expressed a desire to meet and congratulate director Siva to ‘Viswasam’ producer Thyagarajan.

“Siva came home to meet me and I really liked him. He was like a child as there was truth in every word that he said,” the superstar recalls.

When the topic of doing a film together came up, Rajini says he pointed out that doing a film was not important but delivering a hit was. To this, Rajini says Siva told him, “Giving you a hit is easy sir.”

Admitting that Siva’s reply took him by surprise completely, Rajini says, “Nobody has said that to me so far. People usually tell me, ‘We can make it a hit sir or we can try sir.’ There has never been a director who has told me that giving me a hit is easy.”

Rajinikanth then says he asked Siva how he was so confident about delivering a hit.

To this, Rajini says Siva pointed out two factors. “One, you must be in a film with a good story and two, you must play a village character as it has been a long time since you have done such a role.”

“If we have both these, it will be enough,” Rajini recalls Siva as telling him.

“I really liked the way he said it. I told him to come back with a good story. In 20 days time, he called me and said he had a story and would want to give me a narration. I asked him to come over and he said it would take two and a half hours. I agreed,” the actor says.

The superstar admitted that he was moved when Siva began narrating the story.

“I had tears in my eyes without my knowledge by the time Siva was narrating the climax,” he said and added, “I shook Siva’s hands and said, ‘Super. You must make a film exactly the way you have narrated.’ To this, Siva replied, ‘I will make it better than this. You will see that hordes of people will come to watch the film sir. I will make a film like that.'”

“Just like what he said he would do, he has done. This film is a big success. There were a lot of problems while making the film but Siva faced all of them with a smile,” Rajini pointed out before signing off.

Notice to ‘Jai Bhim’ team demands apology, Rs 5 cr in damages

Angered at the “wrongful” depiction of the Vanniyar community in the Tamil film ‘Jai Bhim’, starring Suriya, the Vanniyar Sangam president, Pu. Tha. Arulmozhi, has sent a legal notice to the producers, director and Amazon, which operates the OTT platform Prime Video, where the film is being streamed.

The notice, which claims Rs 5 crore in damages and a public apology, was issued to 2D Entertainment, Suriya Sivakumar and his wife Jyothika, because their company A.K. International has co-produced the film, the director-screenwriter T.J. Gnanavel and Amazon.

According to the legal notice, the movie is claimed to have been based on a real-life incident and its storyline draws upon a decision of the Madras High Court.

It retains the names of the people who were involved in the incidents shown in the film, so we have a Rajakannu, Advocate Chandru and the police officer Perumalsamy. The name of the sub-inspector of police involved in the custodial death of an undertrial, however, according to the legal notice, was “deliberately” changed from Anthonysamy to Gurumurthy, and he’srepeatedly referred to as ‘Guru’.

In one of the scenes in the movie, the notice points out, the ‘Agni Kundam’ (fire burning from a holy vessel) symbol of the Vanniyar Sangam is shown in the calendar behind the sub-inspector of police, who commits the atrocity.

The notice says that the makers of ‘Jai Bhim’ had “deliberately” got a calendar made for the year 1995 with the ‘Agni Kundam’. He said it had been done with the “mala fide intention of defaming members of the Vanniyar Sangam and damaging the image and reputation of the entire Vanniyar community.”

According to the Vanniyar Sangam, changing the name of the villain to Gurumurthy, which resembles that of one of its frontline leaders, and projecting him to be from the community by showing its ‘Agni Kundam’ symbol, implied that the members of the community are prone to committing wrongs and taking illegal actions.

“My client states that by various symbolic representations in your movie, you have wantonly, wilfully and intentionally portrayed the character of the sub-Inspector of police, who is guilty of committing a custodial death in the film and also in the real-life story, belongs to Vanniyar community, whereas the said sub-Inspector does not belong to Vanniyar community,” the notice states.

“It cannot be considered as a casual, innocent, inadvertent mistake and natural sequence in the movie,” the legal notice reads. It adds that the scene was included only “with a view to maligning the image of the Vanniyar community people in the society and with a view to defaming the entire community as a whole.”

Apart from demanding Rs 5 crore in damages, the Vanniyar Sangam has also sought the removal of the “defamatory scenes”, references to the Vanniyar community and its symbol, the ‘Agni Kundam’, from the movie. And it has sought an unconditional apology from the film’s producers and writer for tarnishing the reputation of Vanniyars.

Earlier, PMK leader and Rajya Sabha MP Anbumani Ramadoss had written to Suriya citing the objectionable portions in the movie, alleging that they deliberately targeted the Vanniyars.

Responding to the charge, Suriya had pointed out that the ‘Jai Bhim’ unit had put out a disclaimer right at the start of the movie, saying that this was a story that had only been inspired by a real incident and that the characters, names and events were entirely fictional.

Kangana defends her ‘India’s freedom in 1947 was charity’ statement

Kangana Ranaut stirred up a hornet’s nest recently when she said that the freedom that India attained in 1947 was given to the nation as a handout by the British.

Kangana was speaking at a media summit when she gave the controversial statement saying that “India got true freedom only in 2014”.

Several politicians have demanded an apology from her and also made an appeal to revoke her recently conferred Padma Shri award, saying that her statement insults the sacrifice of all those freedom fighters who laid down their lives for the nation.

Now, the actress has come out and defended herself through a series of pictures on her Instagram. Her first picture is a screenshot of a BBC article that spoke about ‘Why Britain owes no reparations to India’.

Captioning the post, the actress wrote, “Why and how can white colonists or their sympathisers get away with such nonsense in this day and age? If you try to figure it out, the answer is in my Times Now Summit statement.”

She adds, “It is because our nation builders did not hold the British accountable for the countless crimes they committed in India, from plundering our country’s wealth to ruthlessly killing our freedom fighters to dividing our country into two parts, at the time of independence. After World War II, the British left India at their leisure, with Winston Churchill being hailed as a war hero.”

Further explaining her side, Kangana states, “He was the same person who was responsible for the Bengal famine; was he ever tried in independent India’s courts for his crimes? No. Cyril Radcliffe, an English white man who had never been to India before, was brought to India by the British to draw the line of Partition in just 5 weeks.”

She adds, “Both the INC and the Muslim League were members of the committee that decided the terms of the Partition line drawn by the British, which resulted in the deaths of nearly a million people. Did those who died tragically gain independence? Was the British or the INC, who agreed to the Partition line, held responsible for the massacre that occurred after?”

The other pictures in the series are of a letter written by the first Prime Minister of independent India Jawaharlal Nehru and an editorial which states that India really attained freedom in 2014. The actress further writes, “There is a letter from our first Prime Minister, Shri Jawahar Lal Nehru, dated 28th April 1948, to the British Monarch, requesting British approval for the appointment of the then-Governor of West Bengal as the Governor-General of India.”

She goes on to state, “The letter can be found in the second image of my post. If such a letter exists, do you believe the INC attempted to hold the British accountable for their crimes? If so, please explain how my statement is incorrect!”

“Did the freedom fighters who gave their lives for an independent India know that the British and our nation-builders would divide undivided India into two parts, resulting in the massacre of one million people? I’d like to conclude by saying that if we don’t hold the British accountable for the numerous crimes committed in India, we are still disrespecting our freedom fighters. Jai Hind,” the actress concluded in her post.

Ashnoor Kaur talks about her debut web series ‘Pari Hun Main’

Actress Ashnoor Kaur talks about her debut web series ‘Pari Hun Main’, which started streaming on November 14. She is playing the lead role of ‘Pari’ in the web series.

Ashnoor talks about her web debut stating: “I actually have mixed emotions, I’m obviously over the moon and nervous at the same time as it’s been a long wait. But I would say that seeing people’s reaction when I announced the release date, they were thrilled and anticipated. I’m really looking forward to it because we have worked really hard for this one. Finally, it’s releasing so I hope the audience enjoys it.”

On talking about the show and playing ‘Pari’, the ‘Patiala Babes’ actress shares: “I had an ecstatic and jovial experience working with my co-actors. Delnaaz and Jiten were really sweet. The vibe on the set was so positive. ‘Pari’ is quite an inspirational character, much similar to my character in ‘Patiala Babes’. She is a girl who desires to pursue her goals on her own terms. She isn’t preachy but sets an example for others to look up to. It is my debut series and this is actually a performance-oriented character.”

Written by Vivek Khatri, ‘Pari Hun Main’ also stars actors Delnaaz Irani and Jatin Lalwani depicting her parents while Arushi Handa will also be seen playing a parallel lead. It will be streaming on a newly-launched OTT platform WOW Originals.

Balakrishna has done it again with ‘Akhanda’ trailer

The theatrical trailer of Nandamuri Balakrishna’s ‘Akhanda’ has now become the talk of the town as it was released on Sunday evening.

The movie has been an attention grabber, ever since it was announced. Boyapati Srinu’s direction and Balayya’s acting prowess have come in for praise from Nandamuri fans.

The ‘Akhanda’ trailer promises to be an out-and-out mass entertainer with Balakrishna’s perkiness as a mass fighter. Showcasing the two variations of Balakrishna’s role, the trailer launches all main characters from the movie ‘Akhanda’.

A modern get-up Balakrishna who is completely in contrast with his other ‘Aghora’ role in the movie impress his fans. But, it appears director Boyapati Srinu has used the routine ‘senseless mass’ formula in this movie.

Though Boypati and Balakrishna make a very good team, it seems like the audience is not ready for age-old, senseless aspects which remain boring. While the theatrical trailer of ‘Akhanda’ establishes a good impression of Balakrishna’s role, it doesn’t convince the audience enough.

On the other hand, Balakrishna is being praised for his dedication and makeover in ‘Akhanda’. Balakrishna has a strong line-up, which includes a movie with Gopichand Mallineni and other ace filmmakers. Balakrishna’s celebrity talk show ‘Unstoppable with NBK’ is also running successfully.

MAA president Vishnu maintains strategic silence over issue of ticket prices

The Telugu film industry is facing problems regarding the cinema ticket prices in Andhra Pradesh.

While a leading production house like DVV Entertainments came out openly on the ticket price issue in Andhra Pradesh, there is no reaction from any biggies of Tollywood.

The Andhra Pradesh government has come up with slashing of ticket prices, which has become hit the pandemic-hit Industry, which is suffering heavy losses already. Though stars like Pawan Kalyan came forward to address the issues, it only caused more damage, as the issue was ignored by the industry biggies.

Movie Artists Association’s president Manchu Vishnu, who promised to resolve all the issues, has kept mum on the ticket price issues. While the Manchus made much noise during MAA elections, their strategic silence regarding such a big problem has irked many of the industry heads.

Telugu Film Chamber of Commerce had issued a note that they do not have any issues regarding the prices of movie tickets, earlier when Pawan had raised his voice against the government.

Now that biggies like ‘RRR’, ‘Radhe Shyam’, ‘Bheemla Nayak’, and ‘Sarkaru Vaari Paata’ are prepping up to hit the screens, the industry is slowly coming to grips with the problems.

The ticket pricing issue has become a headache for traders, theatre owners, distributors and producers, which needs an immediate resolution.
