Plan to reimagine…: Priyanka Chopra as MAMI film fest Chairperson

Global icon Priyanka Chopra Jonas came onboard as the chairperson of The Mumbai Academy of Moving Image (MAMI) film festival — announced on Tuesday.

She was unanimously nominated by the MAMI’s Board of Trustees comprising Nita M. Ambani (CoChairperson), Anupama Chopra (Festival Director). The board also welcomed two new members to its fold, acclaimed filmmaker Anjali Menon and renowned filmmaker and archivist Shivendra Singh Dungarpur.

Speaking on the occasion, Priyanka said: “I’m so proud to be taking on the role of Chairperson of the Jio MAMI Mumbai Film Festival. I’m really looking forward to working alongside these powerhouse women, Isha Ambani, Anupama Chopra, Smriti Kiran and the rest of the team, to take the festival to the next level.

“I’ve hit the road running… with ideas, thoughts and plans on reimagining the festival to find its rightful place in a world that has changed so much in such a short time. We’re all consuming film and entertainment very differently now and in the process, we’ve expanded the footprint of the cinema that we watch.

“I have always been a huge supporter and believer in films from across India and together, we hope to create a strong platform to showcase Indian cinema to the world.”

Adapting to a new paradigm, Jio MAMI 2.0 will have an expanded timeline.

Instead of a film festival that happens over a week, Jio MAMI is now going to pan out from October 2021 to March 2022. From October onwards until January, under the Year Round Programme, apart from Dial M For Films it will hold select digital screenings and masterclasses featuring talent from all over the world.

The hybrid edition of the festival will take place in March depending on how the Covid-19 situation unfolds in India. The tentative dates of the festival are March 11 to March 15, 2022.

“The year that went by for me was so amazing,” Agerwal said. “I am grateful to have had such a wonderful year. ‘Rag Rag Mein Ganga’ season two launched

The second season of the popular series ‘Rag Rag Mein Ganga’ aimed at “inculcating a sense of responsibility towards the holy river in the people” was launched on Monday.

Union Minister for Jal Shakti Gajendra Singh Shekhawat and Union Minister for Information & Broadcasting and Youth Affairs & Sports Anurag Singh Thakur along with Minister of State for Jal Shakti and Food Processing Industries Prahlad Singh Patel jointly launched the season two, a release from the Jal Shakti Ministry said.

The season one of the series which was telecast on Doordashan in 2019 anchored by actor Rajeev Khandelwal had received an overwhelming response following which the second season was launched today, it claimed.

Starting August 21, 2021, the programme will be telecast every Saturday and Sunday at 8.30 p.m. on DD National.

Addressing the gathering after jointly launching the season two of the series, Shekhawat expressed pleasure at the initiative yielding very positive results.

“Forty per cent of the country’s population is dependent on the Ganga River Basin for their livelihood in one way or the other and today, a new consciousness of hope and faith has awakened among the countrymen regarding the conservation, development and ecological balance of rivers,” Shekhawat said.

He added that people have become serious about environment conservation and this thought has given impetus to the works of conservation along with uniting the country.

Sharing an anecdote from his visit at World Water Week at Stockholm, the Union Minister said that the government’s efforts towards environment conservation are internationally acclaimed. This has been possible because of the ‘4P principle of Prime Minister Narendra Modi,” he said.

Since public participation is an important aspect in the success of any campaign, a lot of emphasis is being laid on making this mission a ‘Jan Andolan’ with ‘Jan Bhagidari’ and that is why the big project has been implemented as a community plan, in which there is full participation of the public, and they are feeling a direct connection with this work, Shekhawat claimed.

Congratulating the Jal Shakti Ministry for their vision of encouraging public participation as part of Namami Gange programme, Thakur said that this initiative will take public participation for Ganga conservation to next level by making it a mass movement.

Quoting the huge viewership of Ramayan and Mahabharat during the lockdown, Thakur said that Doordarshan is known for creating quality content which remains popular even after decades. “Rag Rag Mein Ganga season 1 and season 2 is one such programme which has potential to remain popular for years”, he added.

Director General, National Mission for Clean Ganga, Rajiv Ranjan Mishra said, ‘Rag Rag Mein Ganga’ is a very creative and interesting initiative with Doordarshan which has proved to be very effective towards the goal of Ganga conservation and rejuvenation.

He said, “This time, we will not only bring to the fore the importance of tributaries but will also cover new destinations with some special destinations from the previous season.”

Actor and anchor for the show, Rajeev Khandelwal also spoke on the occasion. “This season will also be spreading awareness about tributaries, wetlands and other smaller water bodies which make river Ganga.”

DG Doordarshan Mayank Kumar Agrawal shared that the first season had nearly two crore viewership and informed that Doordarshan received many letters requesting for second season from all over the country.

First season focused spreading awareness about ecology, heritage and lifestyle associated with Ganga. The show found a huge resonance with the audience, especially the youth, who found the travel series a repository of infotainment and Ganga related knowledge. The show received a good review on IMDB rating.

After covering some of the majestic locations along the Ganges in first season, season 2 will cover the journey of some of Ganga’s main tributaries like the Yamuna, Kali, Saryu and the Gandak and showcase the cultural, historical, environmental and socio-economic aspects of the important cities on the banks of these tributaries.

The messages of river rejuvenation and water conservation have been interwoven and their importance reflected through the work being done by NMCG focusing on both Nirmalta and Aviralta, the release added.

Johnny Depp claims being boycotted by Hollywood

Hollywood star Johnny Depp claimed in an interview that he is being “boycotted by Hollywood”.

Depp said that he feels he is being boycotted by Hollywood, as his latest film “Minamata” is yet to get a US release, reports variety.com.

In a new interview with The Sunday Times, Depp called his fall from Hollywood’s good graces an “absurdity of media mathematics.”

Directed by Andrew Levitas, “Minamata” stars Depp as W Eugene Smith, an American photojournalist who helped expose the tragic effects of mercury poisoning on Japanese coastal communities in the 1970s.

Last year, Depp, whose former-wife Amber Heard accused him of domestic violence, lost a libel case against British tabloid, which referred to the actor as a “wife beater” in an article about him and Heard.

The court ruled that the paper proved the content of its article to be “substantially true” and the judge found that 12 of the 14 alleged incidents of domestic violence had occurred.

MGM then reportedly switched the US release of “Minamata” from February 2021 to be announced (TBA) and the actor exited his leading role in Warner Bros.’ “Fantastic Beasts” franchise.

“Some films touch people and this affects those in ‘Minamata’ and people who experience similar things… And for anything … for Hollywood’s boycott of me? One man, one actor in an unpleasant and messy situation, over the last number of years?” Depp said.

He added that he is “moving towards where I need to go to make all that… to bring things to light.”

John Boyega wants period drama role

Actor John Boyega, known for his performances in films such as “Star Wars: The Force Awakens”, “Pacific Rim 2” and “Detroita, is keen to feature in a period drama after watching the hit series “Bridgerton”.

He feels that he has “a future” in period pieces, reports femalefirst.co.uk.

“I think it might not be that show, but I think I definitely have a future in wearing high boots and hats, and speaking more of a pronounced pronunciation. That is definitely in my future,” Boyega told Entertainment Tonight.

The 29-year-old actor shared that he has the necessary horse riding skills after learning how to do so for his role as Finn in “Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker”.

“I am a horse rider too so, c’mon man, specifically for ‘The Rise of Skywalker’ because those horses that we rode at the end, we needed to learn. So, you know, some horse riding, a little bit of charm, c’mon!” he said.

Boyega stars in the new movie “Naked Singularity” as a disillusioned lawyer who teams up with a criminal to pull off a daring drug heist.

He said: “I wanted to play a guy that represented the bridge between the working man and the system in itself, and somebody that actually continues to see people that basically get sent into the meat grinder.”

The actor added: “And that for me really intrigued me. Somebody that’s in that system, especially this job specifically as a public defender, and then deciding, ‘You know what? The justice system doesn’t work for me.’ In fact, then believes in the notion that perhaps the justice system is wrong entirely and that’s something that made me go, ‘Oh, this is interesting.'”
