ICC Test Rankings: Karunaratne biggest gainer, three Indians in top 10

Sri Lanka skipper Dimuth Karunaratne has moved up four spots to 11th in the latest MRF ICC Test Player Rankings for Batting, which were announced on Wednesday.

The opening batsman, who scored a century (118) and a half-century (66) in the just-concluded second Test against Bangladesh which Sri Lanka won by 209 runs at Kandy, has aggregated 712 points.

New Zealand skipper Kane Williamson continues to lead the charts with 919 points, with former Australian skipper Steve Smith giving him tough competition at No. 2 with 891 points.

Three Indian players figure in the list, with skipper Virat Kohli at No.5 (814 points), is the highest-ranked.

Three players — Rishabh Pant, New Zealand’s Henry Nicholls, and Rohit Sharma — who are all on 747 points, are joint sixth. Wicketkeeper-batsman Pant has moved up three places.

In the bowling department, Australian paceman Pat Cummins — currently stuck in India after the Indian Premier League (IPL) was postponed due to a bio-bubble breach — continues to retain the top position with 908 points, followed by India spinner Ravichandran Ashwin (850 points).

Ashwin continues to be the only Indian in the top-10 of the Test Bowling Rankings.

In the all-rounder rankings, all the top-10 have retained their positions, with West Indian Jason Holder leading the charts with 423 points, followed by England’s Ben Stokes (393 pts), Ravindra Jadeja (386), and Ashwin (353) in that order.

Elli AvrRam wins best actress at Stockholm City film fest for ‘With You’

Actress Elli AvrRam has won the Best Actress award for her role in the short film “With You” at the Stockholm City Film Festival.

The 23-minute short film is based on the socially relevant subject of mental health awareness, sexual abuse, and childhood trauma.

“I’m just so thrilled and grateful for this recognition. We all went in with our heart for this project, and to see it getting this response at such prestigious film festivals is truly heart-warming. I feel so happy for all of us, grateful to my director Peppe Segura, and especially for the fact that a story like this is being noticed and appreciated,” she says.

Talking about the process of shooting the film, she adds: “I flew down from Mumbai to Stockholm to shoot the film because I wanted to be part of such films that raise awareness about important issues. Everyone who worked on the film felt it’s important to bring in light, in the darkness, because that’s what we all need to be able to find the strength and to change things. It was emotionally tough to step into my character, Lilly, but I believe that’s what I also love, to get challenged, because it leads to growth as an actor.”

Actor and philanthropist Sonu Sood said anyone who has lost a loved one due to�scarcity of oxygen or injection has not failed.

“Anyone who has lost a loved one due to� the scarcity of Oxygen or an injection will never be able to live in peace all their life. They will always live with a feeling that they failed to save their family. I want to tell them� You didn’t fail, We did,” Sonu tweeted late on Tuesday night.

Since last year, Sonu has been working relentlessly to help people amid the Covid crisis. He and his team recently saved the lives of 22 patients at a Bengaluru hospital, and also arranged for a critically ill Covid patient to be airlifted from Jhansi to Hyderabad for necessary treatment.

On May 3, Sonu thanked Indian actress Priyanka Chopra Jonas for backing his appeal for free education to children of those who lost their lives to Covid.

“Thanks a ton, Priyanka for your support. I promise we will make this happen,” Sonu wrote to Priyanka, along with a folded hands emoji.

Deepika Padukone tests Covid positive

Bollywood star Deepika Padukone has reportedly tested Covid positive.

While an official confirmation on behalf of the actress is awaited, the website of IIFA tweeted the health update on Tuesday. “#DeepikaPadukone has tested positive for Covid-19. Get well soon, Deepika!” said a tweet on @IIFA.

Confirming the news, entertainment industry tracker Ramesh Bala tweeted: “Actress @deepikapadukone tests positive for #Covid. Wishing her a speedy recovery.”

Deepika is currently in Bangalore with her family. Earlier on Tuesday, her father, badminton icon Prakash Padukone had to be admitted to hospital due to a high fever.

The actress’s mother Ujjala Padukone and younger sister Anisha have also tested also positive for Covid.

Deepika has several high-profile films lined up over the next few months. She will be seen opposite husband Ranveer Singh in “83”, which accounts for the saga of India’s first cricket World Cup win in 1983. While Ranveer plays the team’s captain Kapil Dev, Deepika essays Kapil’s wife Romi.

She also stars in a yet-to-be-titled film with Amitabh Bachchan and Prabhas, and in Shakun Batra’s untitled next with Ananya Panday and Siddhant Chaturvedi.

Deepika will also team up with Big B in “The Intern”, while “Fighter” casts her opposite Hrithik Roshan. According to reports, she will also be seen in the Shah Rukh Khan-starrer “Pathan”.

Actress Sonia Balani makes her digital debut in the upcoming “Bhopal To Vegas”, and she says her character shows how to follow a dream and lead life on her own terms.

The “Detective Didi” fame actress plays Rashmi in the series, a character she describes as “a fearless and vivacious young girl who wants to be successful while doing something she enjoys”.

“She is smart and carefree and takes risks unlike other girls her age. I admired her in many ways, and couldn’t have asked for a better start to my digital innings. My character and the story are both relatable and funny, and also deliver a subtle message on following your dreams, being passionate about what you do, and falling in love the way you want,” said Sonia.

“I request people to consider their help as a family and stand by them in such difficult times. I’m making sure to pay their rent, kids’ school fees, also help with food and medical requirements,” Mahika says.

She adds: “The lockdown might force businesses to close and lay off workers or not pay them wages. This again highlights the insecure working conditions of workers. These workers have small incomes and little savings and so they cannot stock up on essentials to survive weeks of lockdown.”

The actress adds that times are tough and one must try to do as much as one can to help each other.

“It’s sad that many people are losing their lives to the virus. I can relate to the pain of their families. But it’s time to stay strong and united. I feel at this time, performing and spending a big amount on rituals is not important. One needs to use the money to save someone’s life. People planning a wedding should not spend a lot on outfits, gold, or parties. They can spend the money on helping someone,” she says.

“Vighnaharta Ganesh” actor Kuldeep Singh practices yoga for fitness

Actor Kuldeep Singh, who is playing the role of Lord Vishnu in the show “Vighnaharta Ganesh”, says fitness is a major issue for him, and he has been practicing yoga to make sure he stays in shape.

“For a person like me, fitness has been addictive and I’m very passionate about it. I’m regularly practicing yoga, mostly Surya Namaskar during sunrise and sunset,” he says.

“I make sure to keep my body engaged. I try and take up household chores and do other work at home,” he adds.

The actor insists one must stay at home and follow Covid protocols to ensure our safety.

“The Covid-19 pandemic has brought this fast-moving world to a standstill. The impact of this pandemic is massive, and the only strategy to curb the rapid spread of the disease is to follow social distancing. The imposed lockdown has resulted in the closure of fitness and activity centers, and overall social life, and has hampered many aspects of the lives of people including routine fitness activities of fitness enthusiasts,” he says.

The actor is known for featuring in shows such as “Vikram Betaal Ki Rahasya Gatha” and “Kaisi Yeh Yaariaan”.

Twitter suspends Kangana’s a/c; actress says have many platforms to raise my voice

Kangana Ranaut handle @KanganaTeam has been suspended on Twitter after the actress posted a series of tweets perceived to be controversial.

In reaction, the actress told she had other platforms to raise her voice including her films.

Kangana had shared a video, where she commented on the reported violence that took place in West Bengal after the assembly election results were declared.

The actress had captioned the video: “Distressed beyond words, death of democracy, an important message for our government #BengalBurning #BengalViolence”

When the team reached out to Kangana, she said: “Twitter has only proved my point they are Americans and by birth, a white person feels entitled to enslave a brown person, they want to tell you what to think, speak or do.”

She added: “Fortunately, I have many platforms I can use to raise my voice including my own art in the form of cinema but my heart goes out to the people of this nation who have been tortured, enslaved, and censored for thousands of years and still there is no end to the suffering.”
