‘Samantha was our only choice for this epic’, says ‘Shaakuntalam’ director

Actress Samantha Ruth Prabhu, who swayed the nation with her moves in ‘Oo Antava’, was the only choice for ‘Shaakuntalam’, the director of the film revealed.

Director Gunasekhar kept Samantha in mind while penning the script of the historical drama.

Elaborating on the same, Gunasekhar said: “When I wanted to make the eternal love story of Shakuntala and Dushyant in an interesting backdrop of a beautiful whimsical forest much like a forest princess in a Disney kind of film, I wanted someone who could be relatable to the millennial audiences, and felt Samantha would be apt for this film and approached her.”

The filmmaker also believes that Samantha fitted the role perfectly and that no one could have essayed it better than her.

“The film traces the emotional journey of a woman who falls in love and the challenges fate throws at her. She’s a character of inner strength who depicts her emotions with dignity and grace in all that she does. Her truth is her strength, all these emotions can only be portrayed by a wonderful performer like Samantha and she was our only choice to be able to create this epic”, he added.

‘Shaakuntalam’ is set to release on April 14 in cinemas.

Kareena likes a mix of mainstream and off-beats films in her filmography

Bollywood actress Kareena Kapoor Khan, who recently kickstarted the shoot of her upcoming film ‘The Crew’, has shared that she likes to keep a healthy mix of mainstream and off-beat films in her filmography and that her titular role in ‘Chameli’ is a testament to that.

‘Chameli’, which was released almost 2 decades ago, was directed by Sudhir Mishra and saw Kareena playing the role of a sex worker – a brave choice for an actor in that era. The film received many accolades for its storytelling and Kareena’s performance which proved to be a milestone in her career.

Talking about making brave choices, Kareena told IANS: “I have always been a risk-taker and it’s because of my passion for acting. That’s the reason behind me doing a ‘Golmaal’ and an off-beat film like ‘Omkara’, a ‘Yuva’ or a ‘Chameli’.”

Kareena, whose streaming chat show ‘Hat Women Want’ on Mirchi Plus has been receiving a lot of audience appreciation, comes from the first film dynasty of India – the Kapoor clan but, being a star was never on her mind, she said. Instead, for her, it has always been about honing her craft as an artiste.

She further mentioned: “It was never on my mind to become a star. I come from a certain background so back then, I thought that being an exceptional actor, may happen or might not happen but to try and give my 100 percent to the part that I essay is not just my duty but also the responsibility that comes with the privilege.”

“I was 21 years old when I played Chameli at a time when nobody was doing films like that. Today, I’m 42 and people still talk about that film. It really built up a certain perception in the minds of the audience about my work. So, I have always had a good mix of commercial mainstream and off-beat cinema and I would like to keep it that way, even now you will see me in ‘The Crew’ which is more women-centric and commercial, and also working in the Indian adaptation of ‘The Devotion of Suspect X'”, she concluded.

‘HanuMan’ theme track is a redefined version of ‘Hanuman Chalisa’

The theme track of the upcoming multi-lingual superhero Indian film ‘Hanuman’ was released recently. It is a powerful take on ‘Hanuman Chalisa’.

The film, directed and written by Prasanth Varma, is a blend of stories from Hindu mythology mixed with the prowess of modern technology.

The song celebrates Lord Hanuman’s strength, grit, and valor. The ‘Hanuman Chalisa’ is a famous hymn dedicated to Lord Hanuman and is believed to have been composed by the poet Tulsidas in the 16th century. It is widely recited by devotees to seek the blessings and protection of Lord Hanuman. The film, which stars Teja Sajja, Amritha Aiyer, and Vinay Rai in the lead roles, sets up Indian mythology’s first cinematic universe.

Talking about the track, director Prasanth Varma said: “Having ‘Hanuman Chalisa’ in our film was an undeniable choice, but we knew that we wanted it to embody the very essence of our story. With great care and precision, our composers have woven a song that not only pays an ode to Lord Hanuman but also captures the soul of our film.”

The clips showcase the different scenes from Lord Hanuman’s stories, adding a rich visual element to the song’s spiritual message.

The director further mentioned: “The making of this hymn was an illuminating experience, allowing us to delve deeper into its profound message of peace and strength. Through relentless brainstorming, we have elevated its elements, making it a true tribute to the mighty Lord. I am humbled and forever grateful for this opportunity to offer our homage, and there couldn’t be a more auspicious day to release this song.”

The film tells the story of a young boy (Teja Sajja) who, with the blessings of Lord Hanuman, transforms into a modern-day superhero. The film has the vision and visual effects of a universal superhero adventure with a powerful yet relatable story at the heart of it.
