Vijay Varma spent a lot of time in ‘agony’ for ‘Darlings’

Actor Vijay Varma, who has become the “Darling” of the audience with the release of his recent streaming movie ‘Darlings’, shared that he spent a lot of time in agony while the filming was underway.

In the film, Vijay plays a drunkard husband and a domestic abuser to Alia’s character of Badrunissa ‘Badru’ Shaikh. One fine day, when things get to a breaking point, Alia’s character snaps and avenges the humiliation and pain from Vijay’s character of Hamza.

“Playing grey or negative characters doesn’t come naturally to me. For ‘Darlings’, I spent a lot of time in agony. There were three women on set and we were as a team cooking up ways to kind of deal with a certain relationship between Badru and Hamza.”

But, Vijay said that negative roles give a window to actors to explore the psyche of what forms a considerable part of our society, “Having said that, playing a negative character does bring along the opportunity for an actor to tap into a certain kind of personality types that probably exist a lot in the society that we live in.”

“I feel if a few households resonate with the kind of work we have done in darlings then it’s a job well done”, the actor said with a sense of hope.

The medium of OTT has given new life to actors, the absence of the pressure related to opening day box-office figures and the longer shelf-life of the content is comforting, to say the least.

When asked if working in the medium of OTT is liberating, Vijay responded by saying, “I never had to face the pressure of the opening day figures though I have been part of films where good opening mattered and they went on to collect good money but it was never in an effect that it would bother me or my job.”

The actor is particularly impressed with how content on streaming platforms transcends physical boundaries, “What I found fascinating about streaming medium, is how quickly it reaches the audience. To this day I get messages from people in Turkey, England, and places where earlier we couldn’t imagine our content was being played.”

“The moment a film or a series drops on a streamer, it spreads across the globe. That’s what is fascinating to me as a creative person and an actor”, he added.

‘Darlings’, which also stars Alia Bhatt, Shefali Shah, Roshan Mathew, Vijay Maurya, and Rajesh Sharma, is available to stream on Netflix.

‘Sita Ramam’ which was released on August 5, has come as a relief to Tollywood which has been reeling under a series of box office disasters in recent times.

The romantic drama set against the backdrop of war follows the love story between a soldier played by Dulquer Salmaan and his lady love, played by Mrunal Thakur. Rashmika Mandanna plays a very significant role in Afreen. The story spans the period between the sixties and eighties.

As the ‘Game of Thrones prequel series House of the Dragon’ was released in Sydney, Patrick Delany, the CEO of Australian television company Foxtel, referred to actress Emilia Clarke as a “short, dumpy girl.”

Foxtel, an Australian pay television company, is the country’s home for ‘Game of Thrones, reports Variety.

As reported by Australian publication Crikey, Delany was giving a speech ahead of the ‘House of the Dragon’ premiere screening and tried to make a joke about the first time he watched ‘Game of Thrones.

The CEO said: “I was like, ‘What’s this show with the short, dumpy girl walking into the fire?'”

Delany was referencing Emilia Clarke’s character, Daenerys Targaryen, who famously walks through fire during the series.

An attendee at the Sydney premiere told Crikey that “there was a bit of a gasp” after Delany made the comment.

A Foxtel spokesperson told Crikey after the event that Delany’s remark was “meant to be self-deprecating.”

The company issued a statement that reads: “The aim was to convey that for him, ‘Games of Thrones was something very different for television in 2011 and that Emilia Clarke went from relatively unknown to one of the most recognized and most-loved actors in television and film.

“On behalf of Mr. Delany, the Foxtel Group apologies if his remarks were misunderstood and caused any offense,” the statement concluded.

Since ‘House of the Dragon’ takes place hundreds of years before ‘Game of Thrones, Clarke is not involved in any capacity with the new HBO prequel series.

Foxtel announced in 2019 that the controversial ‘Game of Thrones series finale led to the biggest influx of overnight subscribers in the company’s history.

As Mani Ratnam’s ‘Roja’ completes 30 years, A.R. Rahman says ‘that’s why I’m here’

Late director K. Balachander’s Kavithalayaa Productions, which produced director Mani Ratnam’s blockbuster ‘Roja’, has recalled the words of K. Balachander when he introduced A.R. Rahman as a music director on the occasion of the film completing a glorious 30 years.

Taking to Twitter, Kavithalayaa Productions, on its timeline, posted two videos. The first video clip, which was a speech of the late director, was posted by the production house saying, “In his own inimitable style, KB sir expressed his appreciation for ‘Roja’ artistes and technicians on the occasion of the silver jubilee of the film. Today, we offer this as Kavithalayaa’s tribute to them.”

The second video, which was posted on Tuesday night by the production house, was one that had clips of a recent A. R. Rahman performance.

In the video, music director A. R. Rahman is seen on stage saying, “Thirty years of ‘Roja’. I want to thank the whole team of ‘Roja’. Mani Ratnam, K. Balachander, Vairamuthu, Minmini, S. P. B. Garu and all the singers.”

“I want to thank all of you and your parents, who have encouraged me. They’ve shown me, love. That’s why I am here. So, let’s celebrate ‘Roja’ 30.”

The video also had clips of actor Arvind Swamy and actress Madhubala, who played the lead in the film, talking about it.
