‘Sardar’ team spends over Rs 4 crore on Azerbaijan, Georgia schedules

If sources in the industry are to be believed, the team of director P S Mithran’s upcoming action entertainer, ‘Sardar’, featuring actor Karthi in the lead, has spent a whopping Rs four crore on its Azerbaijan and Georgia schedules which concluded recently.

Sources in the know say that the team headed to Azerbaijan just to shoot important portions of the film.

Bollywood actor Chunky Pandey plays the villain and the movie is believed to have been shot inside the Parliament of Azerbaijan, something which no film crew has managed to do before.

Following the schedule in Azerbaijan, the team headed to Georgia to shoot.

Shooting at both these places has cost the production house a whopping Rs four crore. Now, the team is back in Chennai, where shooting is on in full swing.

S Lakshman Kumar is producing this film under the banner Prince Pictures.

Sources say that ‘Sardar’ will be actor Karthi’s biggest film in terms of budget till date.

The film, which features actresses Raashi Khanna and Rajisha Vijayan as the female leads, will also see actress Laila make a comeback.

‘Sardar’ has music by G V Prakash Kumar and cinematography by George C Williams.

Actress Pranitha Subhash, who was recently blessed with a girl, has now penned an appreciation post for her mother, Jayashri, a gynaecologist by profession.

Taking to Instagram, Pranitha said, “Appreciation post for my mum Dr Jayashri… The best any girl could ask for would be a gynaecologist mom. But when a gynaecologist has to deal with her own daughter’s pregnancy, it’s very very tough emotionally because she knows of the various complications that can possibly happen.

“I remember this scene from ‘Munna Bhai MBBS’ where Boman Irani talks about how his hands would shiver if he had to operate on his own daughter. Thank you mummy for making this a peaceful experience and it’s only now that I understand why she’s always running to the hospital at odd hours for her own patients because each patient’s responsibility is in the hands of her gynaec.

“It’s only now that I understand why she puts her profession ahead of her personal life, vacations or any family events.”

‘Joker 2’: Lady Gaga in early negotiations to play Harley Quinn

The Joaquin Phoenix-starrer Joker 2′ – a sequel to the runaway 2019 hit film — will be a musical for which singer Lady Gaga is in early talks.

She will be seen portraying Harley Quinn – Joker’s love interest and partner in madness, in the film, reports Variety’.

Speculation that Harley Quinn would appear in the movie first bubbled to the surface after Phillips posted the cover of the screenplay to Instagram on June 7.

‘Variety’ states that the subtitle for the film, ‘Folie A Deux’, refers to a shared delusional disorder, and Joker’s only real companion — other than Batman, anyway — has been Quinn, a character first created for ‘Batman: The Animated Series’ in the early 1990s.

Making ‘Joker 2’ a musical is another bold stroke by director Todd Phillips, who struck gold — at the box office (with $1 billion in worldwide grosses) and the Oscars (with 12 nominations and two wins) — when he reframed the Dark Knight’s number one villain as a loner anti-hero. Joaquin Phoenix won the best actor for his performance as Joker, aka Arthur Fleck; he’s also expected to reprise his performance, though his deal is not settled yet.

According to ‘Variety’, all other details about ‘Folie A Deux’ remain under wraps, so it’s unclear whether Gaga would also contribute any music to the project, but it’s a safe bet that it’s at least on the table.

Gaga worked with Phillips in his capacity as one of the producers of 2018’s ‘A Star Is Born’, which earned Gaga an Oscar nomination for best actress a” and an Oscar win for original song. That movie’s star and director, Bradley Cooper, was also a producer on a joker, but it’s unclear what level of involvement he has on ‘Folie A Deux’.

Actor and politician Kamal Haasan watched the trailer of director Prabhu Solomon’s upcoming film ‘Sembi’ and congratulated the entire team, including actress Kovai Sarala, who has played a pivotal role in the film.

Sources close to the unit of the film said that the actor, after watching the trailer, lauded his ‘Sathi Leelavathi’ co-star Kovai Sarala by calling her a ‘Nadippu Ratchasi’ (A monster when it came to acting).

The development happened when crew members of ‘Sembi’ had gone to meet Kamal Haasan in person to congratulate him on the success of Lokesh Kanagaraj’s action entertainer, ‘Vikram’.

Producers of the film, Trident Arts’ R Ravindran, AR Entertainment’s Riya and Auditor Akbar Ali, the film’s director Prabhu Solomon, Kovai Sarala, and Aswin were present during the meeting.

Kamal Haasan praising the trailer has got the team of ‘Sembi’ excited. “We are so happy that Kamal sir has appreciated our attempt. We are hopeful of the film getting a good response,” they said.

The sources say the film is getting ready to hit screens soon.

Megastar Chiranjeevi was thrilled by the recently released film ‘Major’, starring Adivi Sesh.

Chiranjeevi honored the ‘Major’ team by hosting a lunch for them. During their get-together, the ‘Acharya’ actor spoke with the Major team for hours.

Chiranjeevi posted a few photos from the gathering on his Twitter account, writing: “Major is not a film. It’s truly an Emotion Story of a great Hero & Martyr Major Sandeep Unnikrishnan told in the most poignant way. A must-watch… Proud of Mahesh Babu for backing such a purposeful film. ‘Major’ directed by Sashi Kiran Tikka is based on the real-life incidents of Major Sandeep Unnikrishnan, who attained martyrdom during India’s darkest terror attack 26/11.

Honor killing: Brother hacks to death sister, husband in TN

In another case of honor killing in Tamil Nadu, a person hacked to death his sister and her husband.

The dastardly act took place at Kumbakonam in the Thanjavur district of Tamil Nadu on Monday evening.

The deceased are Saranya (24) and her husband Mohan (31). Saranya who is a Dalit married Mohan, of Naicker caste five days ago after a love affair of five months. Saranya, a nurse, took her ailing mother to a Chennai hospital where she was working and met Mohan who was at the hospital as an attendant to his relative. The friendship turned into a love affair and they decided to marry amid strict opposition from both the families.

Saryanya’s brother Sakthivel (31) wanted her to be married off to his friend, Ranjith (28) of Devanagiri. However, Saranya insisted on marrying Mohan which infuriated her brother.

However, police said that Shakthivel invited them for dinner at the family residence and after the feast hacked both of them to death. Ranjith was also an accomplice in the murder of the duo.

Thanjavur Superintendent of Police, G. Ravali Priya told IANS that both the accused, Sakthivel and Ranjith are in police custody and further investigation is on.

She said that a detailed charge sheet will be presented before the court after taking information from eyewitnesses, relatives and friends, and local people.

Even as the Dravidian parties are claiming social equality, Tamil Nadu is turning into one of the most vulnerable states of South India for honor killings based on caste and casteism is rampant in the state with the Dalit families not even being able to cross the fields of the backward castes and upper castes.

The makers of the Malayalam movie ‘Kaduva’ starring Prithviraj Sukumaran, Vivek Oberoi, and Samyuktha Menon, released the second teaser of the film on Monday.

Helmed by Shaji Kailas, the glimpse into the flick promises to give audiences entertainment that’s high on action, thrill, and drama.

The hit-making combination of actor Prithviraj Sukumaran and filmmaker Shaji Kailas brings back ’90s action thrills in this mass-entertainer co-starring Vivek Oberoi and produced by Listin Stephen and Supriya Menon under the banners Magic Frames & Prithviraj Productions. Jakes Bejoy has composed the music for the film.

Release of Arun Vijay-starrer ‘Yaanai’ postponed to July 1

The release of director Hari’s eagerly-awaited Tamil action entertainer ‘Yaanai’, featuring Arun Vijay and Priya Bhavani Shankar in the lead, has been pushed to July 1.

Confirming the decision to postpone the release of his film from June 17 to July 1, actor Arun Vijay, on his Instagram page, said, “With all due respect to ‘Vikram’, we are postponing our ‘Yaanai’ worldwide release to July 1st. Wishing Kamal Haasan sir and Lokesh Kanagaraj and RKFI for the record-breaking success – Team Yaanai.”

Sources say that the film’s release has had to be postponed as director Lokesh Kanakaraj’s ‘Vikram’ continues its strong run and theatre owners are reluctant to pull it off their theatres.

As a result, ‘Yaanai’, which was to release along with ‘Veetla Vishesham’, the Tamil remake of the Hindi hit film ‘Badhaai Ho’, on June 17 has pulled out of the release race for next week.

This isn’t the first time that the film’s release is getting postponed. The film was to release on May 6 this year. However, it got postponed to June 17 and now, the release has been pushed to July 1.

The satellite and digital rights of the film have already been bought by the Zee group.

Produced by Drumstick Productions, the film features actress Priya Bhavani Shankar as its female lead, and is primarily targeted at ‘B’ and ‘C’ center audiences.

The film has raised expectations as this is the first rural script that Arun Vijay is doing after a gap of almost 12 years.

The ‘Virata Parvam’ team held an ‘Aathmeeya Vedika’ in Warangal to promote the upcoming film which will be released on June 17. Lead star Rana Daggubati says he was asked why he chose to appear in a film with a smaller role.

“Many people asked me why I’m doing this movie instead of doing some action picture,” Rana stated while speaking on the occasion.

“Generally, heroes make films for the enjoyment of their fans and claps. However, if you’re looking for an honest movie line in between claps, this is the film for you”, the ‘Dum Maaro Dum’ actor explained.

Rana said during the ‘Virata Parvam’ event that the film is totally Sai Pallavi’s show.

“Sai Pallavi is an exceptional performer. “It’s possible to find another actor who can play my role in the film,” Rana stated, “but no one else could have done what Sai Pallavi did in the film.”

Rana went on to say that ‘Virata Parvam’ has a poetic touch. Rana explained why the movie is being released only in Telugu and not in other languages, claiming that the film has a unique narrative and appeals entirely to the Telugu audience’s sensibilities.

He concluded by saying, “We will meet again in the same place for a success meet.”
