Chhota Shakeel’s long shadow over Salman-starrer ‘Chori Chori Chupke Chupke’

0

‘Chori Chori Chupke Chupke’ had a stellar cast (Salman Khan, Rani Mukherjee, and Preity Zinta), a story centered around surrogacy (a childless couple using the services of a prostitute to become the surrogate mother of their child), and the hit-maker director duo of Abbas-Mustan, and it was a commercial success too, yet it made headlines for the wrong reasons.

The Mumbai Police nabbed the film’s producer, Nazim Rizvi, days before its December 22, 2000, release date and charged him under various sections of the IPC and the Maharashtra Control of Organised Crime Act (MCOCA). The principal charge against the producer, who had made two C-grade films before he landed ‘Chori Chori…’, was that he was being funded by the feared D-Company operative, Chhota Shakeel and that they pressured Salman Khan to sign up for the film.

A month after Rizvi’s arrest, on January 8, 2001, the film’s financier, the respected diamond merchant Bharat Shah, too, was arrested. The Mumbai Police had hours of tape-recorded conversations between Rizvi and Shah, and between the producer and Chhota Shakeel, to support their charges against the two. The CBI also got into the act — it seized the film’s prints and handed them over to the court’s receiver.

The respect with which Shah was held in his community became apparent when diamond merchants went on a strike on January 10 to protest against the arrest. Ironically, Shah had been provided police protection in 1997 after he’d made a complaint about receiving extortion calls.

The case became famous because of the number of film personalities, including Shah Rukh Khan, Salman Khan, and Sanjay Dutt, and even Rakesh Roshan, a mafia hit job survivor, who had turned hostile and went back on the depositions they had made to the cops. The sole exception was Preity Zinta.

In an in-camera deposition made in the court of the then Sessions Judge, A.P. Bhangale, Preity admitted having received an extortion threat from a Chhota Shakeel gang member, but she had dismissed it as a crank call.

The actress also said Sanjay Dutt and she shared a common secretary, Pankaj Kharbanda, to whom she had disclosed the threat received by her. He may have told Dutt about it. In any case, she said, the entire Bollywood came to know about it.

Talking about it years later, Preity said at the India Today Conclave East 2018: “For the record, if I knew everyone was going to back out, I also would have. It was a scary time in my life. I should have been protected. Whatever I said in court was on TV 10 minutes later.”

Recalling the all-pervasive fear in the industry, Preity said: “There was definitely fear going around. Because Rakesh ji (Roshan) had been shot. Everyone was paranoid. People would keep their phones switched off, worried that they would get a call.”

Preity remembered how everyone was upset with her. “They all said ‘why did you have to be the one to do all this?’ But my way of thinking was different. I didn’t have a family, I didn’t have children.”

Bharat Shah applied for bail seven times in the lower courts, and then in the Bombay High Court, but it was rejected on each occasion. Finally, he approached the Supreme Court, which granted him bail.

His defense lawyers argued that there was no conclusive evidence to prove that the voice in the tape of the conversation recorded by the police was that of Shah. The transcripts of the conversations, they said, were not admissible as evidence because the interception procedure was legally not correct.

Judge Bhangale, however, found Shah guilty of concealing information from the police, chargeable under Section 118 of the IPC, and not under any provision of the more stringent MCOCA.

Shah was given a one-year jail term, which he did not have to serve because he had already spent 14 months in prison. Both Rizvi and his assistant, Abdul Rahim Allahbaksh Khan, were sentenced to six years’ rigorous imprisonment (by then, they’d already spent 32 months in jail). The judge also imposed a fine of Rs 5,00,000 each on Rizvi and Khan.

The two had been found guilty under MCOCA of forging links with Chhota Shakeel in order to target film personalities for personal gains.

The arrest and conviction of Bharat Shah proved how close and complicated Bollywood’s relationship with the underworld was, and it sounded a warning bell to those in the movie business to clean up their act. The Bharat Shah conviction came at the same time as the arrest of gangster Abu Salem in Lisbon (2004) and his subsequent extradition (2004). It was curtains for Bollywood’s cozy connections with ganglords and their henchmen.

“I’ve been always been really into fitness. I like doing gym or yoga, either the gym or just at home, whatever I have,” Pataky, who has always been “really into fitness,” said.

“I’ve been doing more lately because I worked really hard for the movie to just get really strong. I really felt all the changes in my body. The weights really tone your muscles and your body to keep everything strong.”

She admitted getting older has taken a toll on her body.

Pataky told Australia’s Marie Claire magazine, “With age, everything feels like (shrugs)… it’s gravity. Turn that gravity off!”

And the Spanish star knows hitting the gym will always make her feel good.

She added: “I love the endorphins (you get from working out). Even when I’m low energy, working out gives me the power to just go through the day. It makes me feel really good. It makes me happy. I do that at least three times a week if I can. It’s just finding the moments, even though sometimes we get busy, it’s just like, ‘Okay, just half an hour.'”

Pataky was able to turn to her husband and actor Chris Hemsworth, with whom she shares her kids India, nine, and seven-year-old twins Sasha and Tristan, for tips and advice on building muscle for the role.

She previously said, “He gives good tips, especially about nutrition. He was shooting the latest ‘Thor’ movie while I was doing ‘Interceptor’, so we took turns training and looking after the kids.”

‘Spider-Man: No Way Home’ extended cut to play in theatres from September 2

Seems like there can’t be enough of ‘Spider-Man: No Way Home’. After setting the box office on fire, the film is once again waiting to take the audience on a fantasy ride as its extended cut will soon make its way to theatres, reports Variety’.

Sony Pictures announced that ‘Spider-Man: No Way Home – The More Fun Stuff Version’, a cut of the December 2021 Marvel film with added and extended scenes, will hit theatres over Labour Day Weekend.

The news came Friday evening (Pacific Standard Time) in celebration of 60 years of the Spider-Man comic book character and 20 years of Spider-Man films, along with a teaser featuring a clip from the movie where Tom Holland and previous ‘Spider-Man’ actors Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield unite.

“This is so cool. We should do this again,” says Garfield’s Peter Parker. “You got it,” Maguire’s Peter replies.

As per ‘Variety’, the extended cut will play in the U.S. and Canada, with more countries to be announced. Tickets will go on sale on August 9 with screenings beginning on September 2, including premium large formats such as IMAX.

‘Variety’ further states that ‘Spider-Man: No Way Home’ is the third biggest box office hit ever in the U.S., and sixth internationally – and could potentially soar higher thanks to ‘The More Fun Stuff Version’, as re-releases often do big business.

During the pandemic, in 2021, James Cameron’s groundbreaking sci-fi epic ‘Avatar’ returned to the big screen and reclaimed the title as the highest-grossing movie in history with $2.802 billion globally, after ‘Avengers: Endgame’ usurped it in 2019.

Justin Bieber struck with facial paralysis, shows postponed

0

Justin Bieber can’t feel half his face as it has been paralyzed by a rare virus following which he had to cancel his shows in Toronto and Washington, D.C., reports Variety’. The ‘Let Me Love You’ hitmaker took to Instagram to explain the “pretty serious virus”.

In a two-and-a-half-minute post, he explained and demonstrated that he is suffering from Ramsay Hunt syndrome, a rare virus that affects nerves in the face and can cause facial paralysis.

As if to prove that he is genuinely ill, he shows quite clearly in the video: “As you can see, this eye is not blinking. I can’t smile on this side of my face. This nostril will not move. So there’s full paralysis on the side of my face.”

“So for those who are frustrated by my cancellations of the next shows, I’m just physically, obviously not capable of doing them. This is pretty serious. As you can see”, he further demonstrated in the video.

‘Variety’ further states that overall, however, he was upbeat and took a positive attitude that he will undergo therapy and exercises in order to overcome his ailment. He said, “It will go back to normal. (It will take) time and we don’t know how much time that’s gonna be, but it’s gonna be okay. And I have hope, and I trust God, and I trust that this is all for a reason. I’m not sure what that is right now. But in the meantime, I’m gonna rest.”

Possibly due to negative reactions to the vague reasoning given for the show postponements earlier this week, sadly it seems that Bieber may have felt the need to demonstrate that he is genuinely ill. A statement from the venue, Scotiabank Arena, posted at the time and accessed by ‘Variety’, read, “Due to non-COVID related illness, the Justice Tour has postponed this week’s Toronto shows,”

People who attended Bieber’s concert in Brooklyn, New York last week tell Variety that the singer delivered a solid show and displayed no symptoms resembling what is in the Instagram post, although he was a bit more low-key than usual.

According to the Mayo Clinic website, Ramsay Hunt syndrome “occurs when a shingles outbreak affects the facial nerve near one of your ears. In addition to the painful shingles rash, Ramsay Hunt syndrome can cause facial paralysis and hearing loss in the affected ear.”

It is caused by the same virus that causes chickenpox, which remains in the nerves even after chickenpox has cleared up and can reactivate even years later. If not treated in a timely manner, it can cause permanent hearing damage. Even when treated early, the syndrome can be extremely painful, last for several months, and cause short-term hearing loss.

Bieber’s North American tour was scheduled to include two dates at Madison Square Garden, among others, before concluding in Los Angeles on July 3, and picking up in August with a scattering of dates in Europe and South Africa before moving to Australia and New Zealand toward the end of the year. Presumably, all of those dates are now on hold and potentially postponed.
