Priyanka reiterates demand for cancellation of CBSE exams

Congress General Secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra on Wednesday again demanded the cancellation of the CBSE exams due to Covid resurgence.

“My appeal to the government again is to cancel the CBSE exams,” Priyanka wrote in Hindi on Facebook.

The demand comes ahead of the Prime Minister’s meeting with the education ministers of the states.

Earlier on April 11, she wrote a letter to Union Education Minister Ramesh Pokhriyal Nishank, in which she said, “It will be practically impossible to ensure the safety of students at large and at crowded exam centers. Additionally, given the nature and the spread of the virus, it is not just the students who will be at risk, but also their teachers, invigilators, and family members who are in contact with them. Aside from this, by forcing the children to sit for these exams during a raging pandemic, the Government and the CBSE board will be held responsible in the event that any of the exam centers prove to be hotspots at which large numbers of children become infected with the disease.

“The responsibility to protect and guide the young lies with the political leaders. As state after state issues guidelines preventing the assembly of large numbers of people in public places, what moral grounds can we stand on, while forcing young children to do exactly that?

“It is not just the physical health of these children, but also their psychological well-being that can be deeply impacted. They already face the immense pressure of the exams; in addition, they will now be fearing the conditions in which they will be taking them,” she wrote in the letter.

Congress leader Rahul Gandhi has also asked the Centre to reconsider its decision of holding the exams.

‘Minari’ actor Steven Yeun: Was blown away by story’s simplicity

Mumbai, April 14,(Telugu Bullet) “The Walking Dead” star Steven Yeun toplines “Minari”, Lee Isaac Chung’s drama that is in contention for six Oscars including one for Yeun in the Best Actor category. He says was blown away by the story’s simplicity and truthfulness.

“Minari” is the story tale of an immigrant family’s struggle with cultural identity when they move to the raw and rugged terrain of Arkansas. It talks of what happens when an outsider’s Great American dream collides with reality, and is set in the US of the early eighties.

While receiving accolades for his brilliant portrayal of an ambitious and hopeful man, Yeun shares that he initially didn’t think he would fancy the script.

“I’ve read some other things in this vein and most just touch on the surface, so I honestly didn’t expect I’d be that interested”, he said.

He added: “But I was blown away by the story’s simplicity and truthfulness. Reading Minari, I realized what was missing from other things on this topic: the feeling that the story is coming from an intrinsic, relatable humanity rather than a narrow identity.”

The actor went down a whirlwind of trepidations while preparing for his character.

He said: “For one thing, Korean is something that I can speak, but not necessarily in the right vernacular for Jacob (his character), so I knew that would take some real study and work. Even more worrisome was taking on playing a father in Jacob’s generation — as a minority, playing this kind of role felt very large to me and weighty.”

The actor added: “People often idealise or romanticise the first generation who came to this country, but that’s not what I was looking to do. I was trying to get to the bottom of this very human man, flaws and all.”

“Minari” will be released in India on April 16 by PVR Pictures.

Margaret Cho: John Travolta is ‘last movie star in a lot of ways’

Actress Margaret Cho says she loved sharing screen space with John Travolta in John Woo’s 1997 action superhit “Face/Off”, adding that she considers the actor the “last movie star”.

Travolta the “last movie star” of Hollywood’s golden age, says Cho, who played the role of Wanda in the film.

“There’s not really American monarchy, but there is in Hollywood if you think about it, and he’s sort of in the last era of the golden age of Hollywood. He’s sort of the last movie star in a lot of ways,” Cho said, according to contactmusic.com.

She recalled that Travolta always had the same team with him.

“So he had this sort of court around him of different people that he had worked with, his particular crew, whether they were his stand-ins or his stunt doubles or his crew that he would bring from movie to movie,” she said.

She added: “So you would see sort of the skeletal remnants of different films he had done over the years, so that was really interesting. He was really jovial guy, really fun.”
