Rana Daggubati: You don’t care where the filmmaker is from

Hyderabad, March 22 (Telugu Bullet)   Telugu star Rana Daggubati feels the audience only cares about the film and not where the person making the film is coming from. Rana is ready to release his new trilingual biggie “Haathi Mere Saathi”, in  Telugu Aryana. The film is scheduled to arrive in theatres on March 26, in Hindi, Telugu, and Tamil languages.

Although primarily focussed on Telugu films so far, Rana has also made a significant impact in the Hindi and Tamil film industries from early on in his career. Grandson of Dadasaheb Phalke Award-recipient late producer D. Ramanaidu, he firmly believes the art of cinema ultimately unites across languages.

“It is always the audience. They always want new stuff. When you buy a ticket and get into the theatre, you don’t really care where the filmmaker is coming from. You just care about the film. I think the internet and the press have also broken language barriers in a big way. The audience won’t care whether “Avengers” is in Hindi, in Telugu films, or in any other language,” he said

The actor adds: “I know a little bit about history because of my grandfather. There was a time when all films, be it Hindi, Telugu, or Tamil, were shot out of Chennai. The industries there never had a difference except for talent changing. There was not much difference. Art really unites. Whether you are a director or an actor, you don’t really have a language for this craft. It’s ultimately the art of filmmaking.”

Rana’s role as the antagonist Bhallal Dev in the “Baahubali” franchise was lauded all over. While many remember him as the beefed-up ruthless king from the “Baahubali” films, Rana will soon be seen playing Bandev in “Haathi Mere Saathi”. Bandev is a man who lives in the jungle and has dedicated his life to protecting the eco-system.

“Haathi Mere Saathi” releases as “Kaadan” in Tamil and “Aranya” in Telugu. Talking about the Prabu Solomon directorial, the actor says he underwent drastic transformation physically and psychologically to play the character, who is cut off from regular human interaction.

“When this film was offered to me, I had just done ‘Baahubali’. Prabu was very clear that is not how a jungle man looks (refers to his Bhallal Dev physique). From shedding weight to growing beard, I kept doing that for three to four months. Then for the next 10 to 15 days we spend time on sets, defining how Bandev was and how he behaved,” says Rana.

“We started creating grammar for him, which was very different from what society would have. He didn’t speak to people for a long time. He is a very knowledgeable man but when you have a disconnect with people you behave differently. Prabu detailed that out for me. The first schedule I shot was only with the animals in the wild. So, it took me almost 20 to 25 days to get into the mode. So, that really defined and designed who I was and how I looked in the film,” he sums up.

Janhvi Kapoor refuses to kiss fan amid pandemic

Mumbai, March 21 (Telugu Bullet) Bollywood actress Janhvi Kapoor on Sunday refused to kiss a fan during a virtual conversation.

Janhvi engaged in an interactive session with fans on Instagram where she responded to various queries from them.

A fan asked Janhvi: “Can we kiss”. Reacting to the same, the actress posted a photograph of herself wearing the mask and captioned it: “No”.

Janhvi also answered several curious questions from netizens.

A user asked about her diet routine to which Janhvi replied by sharing a photo of herself with a cup of ice cream in her hand. “4 scoops a day”, the actress captioned it.

Another user quizzed about her favorite memory of traveling, to which she replied: “Road tripping around the south of France a couple of years ago.”

Asked who is her favorite co-star, Janhvi shared a photograph where she is seen hugging her “Gunjan Saxena: The Kargil Girl” co-star Pankaj Tripathi.

“How to stop being anxious,” asked another user, to which she replied: “Hug a pillow and sing sad songs.”

On the work front, Janhvi has just wrapped up shooting for her upcoming film “Good Luck Jerry”. The film is produced by Anand L. Rai, written by Pankaj Matta, and directed by Sidharth Sengupta. It also features Deepak Dobriyal, Meeta Vashishth, Neeraj Sood, and Sushant Singh.

Parineeti Chopra would have been nervous if Saina was present on set

Actress Parineeti Chopra plays badminton ace Saina Nehwal in the biopic “Saina”. The actress says she is glad that only trainers were around on the set and not Saina herself.

“I remember visiting Saina Nehwal’s house in Hyderabad to meet her and she told me, ‘I have never seen you play sports before. When we returned, I knew I had to double my training as someone entrusted me with a responsibility to play the sport right. If I can play even one percent of what she played, I would consider myself lucky. I was glad only my coaches and trainers were there (on the set). If Saina herself had been there, it would’ve made me very nervous,” Parineeti said.

Even though Saina was not physically present at all times, Parineeti reveals that the former was always just a phone call away.

“Saina was very approachable and answered all queries I had. I literally discussed everything under the sky with her, my training, fitness to if I am holding the racquet right. I wanted to look right for the part and do justice to the sport and Saina,” says the actress.

“Saina” is directed by Amole Gupte and set to release on March 26.

Mumbai Saga: Toast to cliches

Mumbai Saga; Cast: John Abraham, Emraan Hashmi, Mahesh Manjrekar, Amole Gupte, Suniel Shetty, Kajal Aggarwal, Rohit Roy, Anjana Sukhani, Prateik Babbar; Direction: Sanjay Gupta; Rating: * * (two stars).

BY VINAYAK CHAKRAVORTY

Sanjay Gupta’s latest is an extension of his trademark “Shootout” films, reloading familiar uber-violence with old-school Bollywood drama about cops, gangsters and the self-seeking political set, packing in loud dialogues and the essential naach-gaana.

Coming after “Shootout At Lokhandwala” and “Shootout At Wadala”, and at a time when everything about cinema is being drastically reorganized, “Mumbai Saga” needed to have some sort of a USP. It doesn’t — Gupta and team seem confident that bringing back a whiff of what worked once upon a time in Bollywood would be enough to rake it in at a time when the audience is only cautiously returning to the halls.

Like the “Shootout” films, “Mumbai Saga”, too, banks on a slice of real-life to set up its fictional action-drama quotient. This time, Gupta falls back on a crucial phase of Mumbai’s contemporary socio-politics — the eighties and the nineties — when the city’s mills, spread across the prime property, were brought down in order to facilitate the construction of high-end highrises, and malls.

At the core of the story is Amartya Rao (John Abraham), a made-to-order Bollywood hero who stands up against the goons of a local tough, Gaitonde (Amol Gupte), when they harass local shopkeepers for ‘hafta’.

As Amartya goes for the big bash-up — reducing Gaitonde’s bunch of baddies to a pulp — he catches the eye of a local politician, Bhau (Mahesh Manjrekar), who realizes Amartya could be molded into an essential ally in his bid to rule the city.

Following the template, there is a cop ‘hero’ to take on John’s gangster antihero. Emraan Hashmi as Inspector Vijay Savarkar takes up the challenge of thwarting Amartya’s formidable rise, but not before half the film is through.

The film adheres to the Bollywood textbook of yore while setting cop hero-versus-Robinhood antihero tussle between Emraan and John.

Sanjay Gupta and Robin Bhatt’s screenwriting narrates a gangster’s story from a gangster’s point of view, so the storytelling is naturally structured to glamorize Amartya. John makes the most of it, banking on brawn power and scoring as an action hero in a film that mainly centers on his machismo to garner mass appeal. He lives up to his action star billing, though he could have toned down the tendency to ham in the drama scenes.

In contrast, Emraan Hashmi is mostly left tackling a role that pales in the swagger-strutting contest. A cop chasing a gangster in a gangster flick is always a tough act to win the ‘taalis’ and seeties’ with. In any case, Vijay Savarkar comes across as a character that could have been written better.

Sanjay Gupta has smartly cast two filmmakers with proven acting credentials in pivotal supporting roles. Both Mahesh Manjrekar and Amol Gupte approach primarily cliched characters with a certain fresh approach, which is definitely an asset for the film. Almost all of the remaining cast have little to do.

“Mumbai Saga” comes across as an attempt to celebrate the cliches that defined Bollywood success in the heydays of the masala film. Sadly, the film gets entangled in the web of the very cliches it sets out to toast, mostly because it lacks ample imagination in storytelling and depth in execution.

Rubina Dilaik back as Saumya in ‘Shakti: Astitva Ke Ehsaas Ki’

“Bigg Boss 14” winner Rubina Dilaik is all set to return to the soap “Shakti: Astitva Ke Ehsaas Ki”. She is back on the show after a span of two years and will reprise her role of Saumya. Her character sets out on a new journey.

“After a hiatus, I am excited to be back as Saumya with a renewed spirit, new power, and determination. It feels like a homecoming and I am looking forward to reuniting with the cast, and moreover to this incredible new phase of the show,” she says.

The show has made a mark with its slant at breaking stereotypes, and showcasing the struggles of a ‘kinnar’, or transgender.

“Shakti: Astitva Ke Ehsaas Ki has been one of the pathbreaking shows on television that very aesthetically portrayed the story of a kinnar and showcased the lesser-known side of the community. It has been a fantastic journey and I have always been thrilled with the love and appreciation the viewers have showered on it,” says Rubina.

The actress returns to the Colors show next week.
