Rani Mukerji: Power with women to change how she’s represented

Mumbai, March 8 (Telugu Bullet) Actress Rani Mukerji says the power lies with women to change the perception about how they are represented in every aspect of filmmaking. On the occasion of international women’s day on Monday, Rani added that if women celebrated each other’s success, they would be heard all the more.

“In my journey in the Hindi film industry, I have realized that the power is with the women to change the perception about how women are represented in every aspect of film-making. We have to support each other, root for each other and empower each other, so that the road is smoother for others who want to make a name for themselves in the male-driven industry. We have to celebrate each other and our successes collectively to ensure that we are all heard all the more,” Rani Mukerji said.

She considers herself fortunate to have got the opportunity to bring fantastic characters to life.

“As an artist, I have been fortunate enough to play some really fantastic self-reliant women on screen and live their inspiring stories closely. Like me, many actresses over generations have tried to change the conversation about how women are portrayed on screen,” she said.

Rani feels blessed that through her films she was given an opportunity to change the conversation of female representation in India.

Rani’s last two films were “Hichki” and “Mardaani 2”. She says she wants to continue finding unconventional scripts as these while representing women on screen.

“I have throughout my career made conscious decisions to portray strong women characters on screen who led by example for society. I have chosen to play women characters who can command respect, because of their uninhibited life choices,” she said.

“I will be inclined to pick projects that have a powerful story to tell through the eyes of a bold, upright woman who doesn’t fear voicing her opinions and is confident about being herself,” she summed up.

Jonita Gandhi: ‘Top Tucker’ took around 20 minutes to record

Jonita Gandhi’s new song Top Tucker is climbing the charts and she said the number, which saw her collaborate with Badshah and Yuvan Shankar Raja, was recorded in less than 30 minutes.

“It took probably around 20 minutes to record, with the back and forth since we were working remotely,” recalled Jonita, about working on the song during the lockdown.

“I had a feeling it would do well. The star of the video is the heartthrob of the nation, combined with Badshah and Yuvan both being hitmakers in their own domains. The combination sounds like something that couldn’t go wrong,” she said, about the video that also stars Rashmika Mandanna.

Looking back at the lockdown phase, despite live shows completely stopping and musicians being forced to stay at home, Jonita said the period was a “blessing in disguise”.

“Normally when I’m touring, there’s no time to focus on family or focus on creating music, and getting in touch with the artist within. I feel like I had more time to do what I really love and not just get caught up in busy schedules that we normally have, where we kind of end up in auto-pilot mode. It was kind of like a forced vacation and I think I really needed it,” she said.

The 31-year-old singer reveals that 2020 helped her focus on creating more music. “It was nice that people were more virtually accessible during lockdown because everyone was in the same boat, so it became the norm to be collaborating online, which also opened up a lot of paths for me. It made it easier to focus on creation as well,” she signed off.

Neil Bhoopalam: Audience entitled to their opinion

Actor Neil Bhoopalam has been part of many youth-oriented, mass-inclined shows that have garnered good responses, be it “24”, “Four More Shots Please” or “Masaba Masaba”. He has become a familiar name in the OTT space, he is also aware of the criticism that comes with it, and he has an interesting take on it.

What does he feel about the controversies and ensuing censure shows such as “Four More Shots Please” often garner? “It’s fiction, borrowed from stories that real people live and lead. I feel the audience is always entitled to their own opinion. Perhaps the person tuning in was looking for something else. It’s a mix of everything,” he told IANS.

The actor added: “Sometimes one takes creative liberty and shows certain lifestyles that the makers are totally entitled to do, and I believe it is okay if you don’t like the content. You don’t have to get upset about it and write a whole rant letter on how you dislike the show. Whenever I read something like that, I think, ‘wow! whoever has done this has a copious amount of time to be able to strip down the show to such a great extent.”

The actor, who appeared in films such as “Shaitan”, “No One Killed Jessica” and “NH10”, has mostly been seen in projects that are not run-of-the-mill.

“I have been fortunate to be part of an entire decade of content, cinema, and storytelling in India which wasn’t there in the previous decade. Because those people didn’t make unconventional stories, the number of stories being told unconventionally in my decade increased. I feel that is how, being an actor, I was able to enjoy these stories,” he said

Having done feature films and OTT shows, the actor has exposed himself to different platforms to showcase his talent. Does he have different parameters to judge the script of a feature film and that of a web show?

“I don’t think too hard about it,” said Neil, adding: ” I love performing as an actor. Theatre is my passion and film, shows and mass media work is my trade. Starting with ’24’ — which was not only a fantastic break into the mass media, it was also an amazing training ground for me — to ‘Masaba Masaba’, which was my recent release, these particular shows have been an amazing process. In a feature film, whenever the opportunity comes by, I like to get my creative satisfaction and kicks. There is no real deciding process. It’s intuitive and always has been. The more I try to reason I just procrastinate.”

Anjali Tatrari: My mother doesn’t miss even one episode of my shows

“My mother is my biggest critic. She makes sure to never miss any of my episodes. And after each one of them, she tells me about what she has loved and where she thinks I could have been better. I love discussing my performances with her. It’s fun because her feedback is so genuine,” says Anjali.

She adds that her current show is also all about family and also talks about how family members don’t have to always be bound by blood.

“While shooting one of the episodes of Sargam Ki Sadhe Satin, I was reminded of the fact that family is not only by blood, but people with whom you laugh and cry also become your family,” she says.

Off the screen, she finds such support from her family, she says. “My family is always there with me during my ups and downs and loves me no matter what. I am always grateful to have a family that is so supportive and encouraging. I believe when it comes to the care and health of the family, it is above everything else. I am ready to go to every length possible to ensure everyone in my family is safe and healthy,” she says.

Nikitin Dheer has a busy line-up of biggies ahead

Actor Nikitin Dheer has a busy year ahead, with three major Bollywood films lined up, as theatrical business slowly trickles back to normalcy post lockdown.

“I have three films that I have completed. Two of these — Sooryavanshi and Shershaah — are ready for release. We also have Antim that we have finished filming. As of now, I am shooting for a Telugu film called Khiladi starring Ravi Teja, and I begin to shoot for Raktanchal season 2,” he told IANS.

Rohit Shetty’s Sooryavanshi is a cop action drama starring Akshay Kumar and Katrina Kaif, while Shershaah, narrating the story of Kargil war hero and Param Vir Chakra recipient Captain Vikram Batra, has Sidharth Malhotra essaying the central role. The crime drama web series Raktanchal is inspired by real-life events in the Purvanchal region of Uttar Pradesh of the 1980s.

Striking a balance between film, TV, and OTT series is easy, says Nikitin, since lines between platforms are blurring, which makes it easier for actors to work across mediums.

“Today, an actor is just an actor, irrespective of the genre. Times have changed immensely for the better. Talent is recognized for its merit. No one is put into compartments by makers anymore,” he says.

Rumour mills were rife with reports that he has being approached for Bigg Boss 15. The actor claims even if he was approached, this was not the kind of project he feels he is suited for.

“I feel you have to be a ‘detain’ kind of personality to take part in a show like Big Boss. I don’t think I have it in me,” he said.

‘Anandi Gopal’ inspires Pune medical college for girls

Director Sameer Vidwans’ critically acclaimed film “Anandi Gopal” has inspired a medical college for girls in Pune.

In 2019, the Marathi film industry saw the release of “Anandi Gopal”, a biopic on the life of Anandi Gopal Joshi, who was one of India’s first female practitioners of western medicine.

Dr. Shantaram Balwant Mujumdar, founder and president of Symbiosis Society, has set up a new medical college only for girls. During its inauguration, he revealed how the film encouraged him.

With an objective of women empowerment and contributing to the requirement of more women doctors in the nation, symbiosis established this exclusive college and the faculty of health science,” Dr. Mujumdar said.

Reacting to the development, the film’s director Sameer Vidwana said: “It’s a very big achievement for me and my team. This is a true success of ‘Anandi Gopal’. There are almost 150 students who have already taken admission. We are very happy that this film has made a positive impact on society.”

The film stars Bhagyashree Milind and Lalit Prabhakar, and it has emerged a raging success at the box office. It received mostly positive reviews, too, for bringing alive the story of Anandi Gopal Joshi and capturing the innocent love story between her and her husband, Gopalrao Joshi.
