Natural disasters in Myanmar forced over 45,000 people to evacuate
Due to heavy rainfall causing surging river levels, over 45,000 individuals in Myanmar are presently seeking refuge in relief shelters across the nation. The Myanmar floods have tragically led to the loss of five lives, with three fatalities in Mon State and two in Rakhine State.
The monsoon season has brought about natural calamities affecting various regions and states including Kachin, Kayin, Bago, Magway, Mon, and Rakhine. Responding to these challenges, the Department of Disaster Management has set up 109 shelters throughout the country to assist those affected by the floods.
These shelters are concentrated primarily in Mon, Kayin, and Rakhine states, as well as in the Bago Region. Rakhine State has already evacuated more than 10,000 people from 2,146 households to shelters due to the combination of flooding and rising river levels. Meanwhile, in Kayin State, heavy rains have inundated six out of seven townships, prompting the relocation of over 18,000 residents to shelters.
In a separate incident related to the heavy rainfall, landslides occurred in Kayin State, resulting in the collapse of a section of the Myawaddy-Kawkareik Asia Road on Monday. This event has led to the road becoming impassable for vehicles, thereby disrupting transportation along this route.
