More than Rs 30 lakh has been collected in fines from over 60,000 people in Bihar for not wearing masks when on the move.

Additional Director General of Police Jitendra Kumar said that action is being taken against those not wearing masks.

“In the last 24 hours, an amount of Rs 4,52,850 has been recovered from 9,057 persons who did not wear masks,” he said. A fine of Rs 30,31,800 has been recovered from 60,748 people since July 5 for not wearing masks.”

He said that steps are being taken to tackle Covid-19 following stringent action against those found violating the guidelines. There has been a rapid increase in the number of corona infections in Bihar.

The number of corona-infected persons in the state has risen to 26,379 after 1,412 new cases were reported in Bihar on Sunday. Nearly 16,597 patients have recovered while 9,602 persons are undergoing treatment.

As many as 179 people have died due to corona. The recovery rate in Bihar has reached 62.91 percent.

New nano drug candidate kills aggressive breast cancer cells

0

Researchers have developed a new nano-drug candidate that kills triple-negative breast cancer cells, which is one of the most aggressive and fatal types of breast cancer.

The study, published in the journal Advanced Therapeutics, will help clinicians target breast cancer cells directly while avoiding the adverse, toxic side effects of chemotherapy.

The research team linked a new class of nanomaterials, called metal-organic frameworks, with the ligands of an already-developed photodynamic therapy drug to create a nanoporous material that targets and kills tumor cells without creating toxicity for normal cells.

Metal-organic frameworks are an emerging class of nanomaterials designed for targeted drug delivery. Ligands are molecules that bind to other molecules, the study said.

“Patients with triple-negative cells are especially vulnerable, because of the toxic side effects of the only approved treatment for this type of cancer,” said study researcher Hassan Beyzavi from the University of Arkansas in the US.

“We’ve addressed this problem by developing a co-formulation that targets cancer cells and has no effect on healthy cells,” Beyzavi added.

The researcher’s focus is on developing new, targeted photodynamic therapy drugs.

As an alternative to chemotherapy — and with significantly fewer side effects — targeted photodynamic therapy, or PDT, is a non-invasive approach that relies on a photosensitizer that, upon irradiation by light, generates so-called toxic reactive oxygen species, which kill cancer cells.

In recent years, PDT has garnered attention because of its ability to treat tumors without surgery, chemotherapy, or radiation.

Beyzavi’s laboratory has specialized in integrating nanomaterials, such as metal-organic frameworks, with PDT and other and therapies. Metal-organic frameworks significantly enhance the effectiveness of PDT.

The research team prepared the nanomaterials and then bio-conjugated them with ligands of the PDT drug to create nanoporous materials that specifically targeted and killed tumor cells with no toxicity in normal cells.

“In addition to cancer treatment, this novel drug delivery system could also be used with magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) or fluorescence imaging, which can track the drug in the body and monitor the progress of cancer treatment,” the study authors wrote.

Shekhar Kapur on how studio wanted a star as Elizabeth, not ‘unknown girl’ Cate Blanchett

Veteran filmmaker Shekhar Kapur has revealed how a studio had insisted that he cast a star in his Hollywood directorial debut, “Elizabeth”. He recalled insisting on going with his heart and roping in the “unknown girl” Cate Blanchett back in 1998.

“Elizabeth was my first Hollywood film. I had noticed an unknown girl called Cate Blanchett who I wanted to play Elizabeth. My agent said Studio wanted a star and if I kept insisting on an unknown actor, they will replace me. I said I had to go with my heart. The rest is history,” Kapur tweeted.

Blanchett got global fame for portraying Elizabeth I in the Hollywood drama, for which she won the BAFTA Award as Best Actress and earned her first Oscar nomination in the Best Actress category.

Kapur’s tweet comes amidst director R. Balki’s defense of Bollywood star kids in the nepotism debate.

“The question is do they (star kids) have an unfair or bigger advantage? Yes, there are pros and cons. But I’d ask one simple question:?Find me a better actor than Alia (Bhatt) or Ranbir (Kapoor), and we’ll argue. It’s unfair on these few people who’re probably some of the finest actors,” R Balki recently told Hindustan Times in an interview.

Kapur had earlier tweeted: “Have huge respect for you, Balki. But I just saw ‘Kai Po Che’ again last night. Three new young actors at that time. And stunning believable performances by each.”

Several celebrities in Bollywood have countered Balki’s viewpoint, including Kapur, writer-editor Apurva Asrani, filmmaker Onir, and actors Maanvi Gagroo and Avinash Tiwary.

Anti-face mask protesters gather in London

0

Around 100 people gathered in London’s Hyde Park to protest against face coverings becoming mandatory in shops from this week, according to media reports.

The rules are already in place in Scotland, with England due to the following suit on July 24, the Metro newspaper reported.

From that date, anyone not wearing a mask inside a store can be asked to leave or made to pay a 100-pound fine by the police.

Those attending Sunday’s demonstration could be seen wearing masks cut up to expose their mouths and carrying placards that read: “I will not be masked, tested, tracked or poisoned. This will not be my new normal.”

One man was photographed wearing a white t-shirt that said: “Save human rights, no to 5G, no to vaccinations,” while another woman had the words “question everything” emblazoned on the front of her top.

Speaking to Sky News, Leah Butler-Smith, one of the protest organizers, explained that she wasn’t against face masks in general, but did not like the government telling people “they have no choice but to wear one”.

“Because the government started out by saying there was absolutely no way there was any need for a mask, and many other independent scientists have repeatedly said the same, then it didn’t make sense why they were suddenly going to be mandated – but only in some places.

“Shopworkers who are being exposed to the public all the time don’t have to wear them but the person going into the shop is expected to wear it. It just doesn’t make any sense.”

Butler-Smith also accused the government of trying to “deliberately frighten people” and she said she thought ministers “absolutely” had an ulterior motive to making masks compulsory.

The demonstration comes after the Health Secretary Matt Hancock confirmed the new rules surrounding face asks in shops, telling the public: “We cannot let our progress today lead to complacency tomorrow,” reports the Metro newspaper.

Indian consulate in Dubai to remain open on weekends, public holidays

0

Starting August 1, the Consulate General of India in Dubai will remain open on weekends and public holidays, Consul-General Aman Puri said.

Puri officially took charge of the Consulate on Sunday, and given the current circumstances owing to the COVID-19 pandemic, services will remain open all days of the week, including weekends and public holidays.

“Starting August 1 to December 31, the consulate will remain open from 8 a.m. to 10 a.m. on holidays. Unlike an open house, consular services will be made available for those in need of emergency requirements such as passport renewal for emergency travel, etc,” he told the Khaleej Times.

He said the decision was also subject to review, depending on the situation.

“We feel that the coming days are going to be tough and people may need our support. However, this is not something new. Our colleagues at posts and missions (Indian) have always come forward in support of distressed Indians. Given our community here in Dubai is large, the needs here are large as well.”

Puri said it remains his priority to continue to provide support towards the repatriation of stranded Indians in the United Arab Emirates (UAE).

“As a priority, we will continue to support the stranded Indians to Dubai to return home. So far, the consulate has repatriated 170,000 Indians from Dubai and the Northern Emirates,” he told the Khaleej Times.

Out of the 170,000, a total of 40,000 have flown out on the Vande Bharat Mission repatriation flights, and 130,000 have used chartered flights organized by private companies and community groups.

Puri also assured that the Consulate will continue to support distressed Indians in every way possible.

“Not just those directly impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic, but even those who have suffered economic distress due to the ongoing crisis,” he said.

Puri replaced former Consul-General Vipul, who left Dubai on July 11.

How Covid-19 will change biz, tech over the next decade

0

The effects of Covid-19 will continue to surface over the next decade, with changes in customers’ expectations, digital experiences, work, technology, and business resiliency altering business permanently, says a new report from market research firm Forrester.

Despite modern healthcare and the implementation of extensive pandemic management protocols, the effects of Covid-19 will cause profound near-, medium-, and long-term impacts said the report titled “The New, Unstable Normal: How Covid-19 Will Change Business And Technology Forever.”

“The pandemic has fundamentally changed the way we do business. It has forced firms and policymakers to do things that were previously considered impossible,” Stephanie Balaouras, VP and Group Director at Forrester, said in a statement.

“As a result, business leaders are quickly embracing new, iterative ways to engage with customers, adapting to new ways of working, investing in technology innovation, and revisiting their business resiliency plans for long-term success.”

The research showed that the pandemic has affected global consumers in different ways, with their risk sensitivity and desire for convenience varying across the region, age, and culture.

In the medium term, financial strain and lack of in-person group interaction will cause consumers to feel a lack of meaning and purpose. This will influence spending on trusted brands that connect them to a greater cause.

In the long term, consumers will opt for brands that offer the most control over buying experiences.

Secondly, businesses will ride the digital engagement wave to create hybrid experiences.

In the short term, as values-based consumers question the ethics of brands and as all experiences become digital in some way, new design practices will emerge that blend emotion and insights, said the report.

Moreover, the pandemic has revealed the ability to do things that once seemed infeasible, including shifting entire workforces to remote working.

Remote working will boost regions around global economic hubs in the medium term as firms shed more than a quarter of their city-center office space, said the report.

Tech and business leaders that accelerate digital outputs — by retiring technical debt — will in the short term acquire a robust digital operating platform and the needed flexibility to overhaul business models.

In the long term, leaders will invest in enterprise risk management capabilities to better evaluate and respond to risk in real-time, said the report.

LeBron James trading card from rookie season fetches record sum at auction

0

A LeBron James trading card recently fetched a record sum of 1.8 million dollars in an auction, which is nearly double to what the previous record-holding card went for.

This particular rare LeBron trading card was from his first season in 2004 where he was awarded the prestigious rookie of the season title while playing for Cleveland Cavaliers.

As per the BBC Sport report, the auctioneers confirmed the card was in mint condition and was one of only 23 ever made.

It eclipsed the previous record of 923,000 dollars, which was fetched by Los Angeles Angels center-fielder Mike Trout in May earlier this year.

Basketball memorabilia of former and current superstars are known to receive high biddings as earlier, Chicago Bulls legend Michael Jordan’s trainers had broken an online auction record.

The Nike Jordan 1’s, which he wore in his rookie season, fetched a whopping amount of 463,000 pounds, beating the previous record held by Nike’s 1972 Moon Shoes.

The 35-year-old James is currently chasing his fourth NBA title. The rest of the NBA season, which had come to a halt in March due to the COVID-19 pandemic, is set to be played at Florida’s Disney World Resort from July 30.

Covid-19 in children: Is it time to panic?

0

Of the estimated 12 million people that have tested positive for Covid-19 globally since the outbreak, only 6 percent are children. Children also make up for less than 3 percent of the hospitalized patients, though the hospitalization rate is higher in children less than five years, compared to older children. There are many reasons speculated as to why Covid-19 has had a lesser impact on children.

One explanation is that the virus can’t attach to body linings (e.g. nasal mucosa) as the receptors are less in children; another is that children are protected by antibodies produced by other viruses they are exposed to, and these antibodies are protective, points out Dr. Swati Garekar, Consultant, Paediatric Cardiology, Fortis Hospital, Mulund.

Yet another reason is that children are staying at home during the pandemic, and hence are less likely to be exposed to people who may be Covid-19 positive, she adds.

India is the second-most populous country in the world and has a demographic profile of a young nation with 26 percent (367million out of 1.4billion) being children less than 15 years of age. This could have translated into a huge number of Covid-19 positive cases. However, the Indian population’s recovery rate from Covid-19 is faster than in most countries, and the death rate is much lower too.

There have been several reports that highlight a peculiar illness affecting children these days; in which, children have had a persistent fever (more than three days), rash, red eyes, stomach pain, and nausea/vomiting, informs Dr. Garekar. “Sore throat and cough/cold are much less common. Blood tests show generalized inflammation and the heart is involved in a major way. Here the typical adult finding of bad Pneumonia is missing. There may or may not be a positive COVID-19 test (PCR or the antibody test) and they may have had close contact with a COVID-19 patient. The involvement of the heart is the most worrisome” laments the expert.

“The heart muscles could have weakened and the coronary artery walls may have been damaged. Special intravenous medicines (steroids and Immunoglobulins) are required to bring the disease under control. These medicines are most effective when given early in the course of the disease.”

The peculiar disease affecting multiple organs in children has been termed ‘Multisystem Inflammatory Syndrome in Children’ (MIS-C), she says.

The World Health Organisation (WHO) and the Centre for Disease Control (CDC) US, has now given it a distinct definition. MIS-C was first reported from Europe and then the US. It seems to be occurring at the end wave of the epidemic that is 2-4 weeks after peak infection rate is seen in the population.

Dr. Garekar advises parents to contact a paediatrician if their child has a persistent fever, along with a rash or red eyes or stomach ache/ vomiting. Suspicion of MIS-C should be aroused and investigated in sick children. Typically, the Paediatrician will rapidly rule out more likely causes like Typhoid, Dengue Fever, Malaria, etc, she says.

“Another mimicker is ‘Kawasaki Disease’. Kawasaki Disease affects the younger population (less than 5years of age), here platelet counts are high, unlike MIS-C. Also, Heart muscle damage is more frequent in MIS-C. Heart involvement can be picked up by Echocardiography and certain blood markers of Heart inflammation. Early diagnosis and treatment will ensure early recovery and less chance of long term damage. In short, there is no reason to panic, but parental vigilance is the key,” she concludes.

A dog’s blood line: Facts you need to know

0

Often pet parents are curious to know the bloodline of the pup they bring home to understand its hereditary characteristics and psychological behavior. The bloodline represents ancestral contributions which are passed down through the breeding process. A dog’s personality is highly influenced by their family genetics. A perfectly bred pedigree goes back several generations and can give you exact information about the temperament, behavior, characteristics, etc. of the breed.

Devanshi Shah, Founder, PetKonnect talks about five different breeds and how they get their characteristics from their ancestors:

Boxers

This breed was refined in Germany. It came into existence when a man was looking for a perfect hunting partner. They thought of breeding such a breed which will have strong physic and will be able to hunt the prey. This breed came into existence in the 1800s when Bullenbeisser was bred with an English bulldog. Bullenbeisser originated from the Mastiff family which were hunters back then. These breeds could chase large prey like deer, wild boars, etc. Their power and strength are impeccable. The boxers have a strong jaw grip to hold their prey. Their facial wrinkles prevent excess blood from spraying into their eyes. It was a fast change from being a guard dog to a compassionate pet in households.

Great Danes

Great Danes are also called gentle giants or as the Apollo of dogs. Great Danes have been in existence for a long time and are a pure breed. Their characteristics specify that in spite of their giant stature they are recognized as one of the sweetest and affectionate breeds. They love to play with children and so make a perfect dog breed around kids. Danes can be easily trained due to their honest and compassionate nature and are also known to be good human protectors.

German Shepherds

They didn’t just become popular; it was because of their inherent traits and nature. They are the most intelligent, devoted, and versatile animals. This breed provides a foundation of a watchdog, protector, and companion. Given the name itself, this breed was bred originally in Germany. The Germans take great pride for this breeds existence and value. They make a good rescue squad. They are known majorly for their working ability.

Pugs

This breed came into existence a couple of decades ago and was originated in China. They are commonly also known as Carlin and Mops. The Pug is one of the most adored breeds all over the world. There is no such difference in the breed from the ancestral period and the modern periods. The only difference is that nowadays, pugs have their ears cropped. They were believed to be from the Mastiff family but there is no connection between the two genetically or hereditary. This is the purest breed of all.

Beagles

They are descendants of the hunting hounds in England long before the Roman legions arrived in 55BC. These small and compact hounds were ancestors of the modern beagles. Their ancestors didn’t have a formal name. They were used for hunting even though they were slow runners. Apart from being hunting animals, they are also loyal, compassionate, and happy-go-lucky which makes them good pets for families.

Manushi Chhillar reveals she is a closet chess fanatic

Actress and former Miss World Manushi Chhillar on International Chess Day on Monday shared that she is a closet chess fanatic, adding that the game stretches the mind in terms of strategy and imagination.

Manushi and her father Mitra Basu Chhillar love a close game of chess and the debutante is an extremely competitive chess fanatic.

“Chess stretches your mind in terms of strategy and imagination because you really have to outwit your opponent at any cost. Playing chess with my dad is something that I have always loved doing because he’s the most unpredictable, intelligent, and the sharpest person I’ve ever played with,” Manushi said.

The actress thanks to her father for infusing a sense of competitiveness in her through chess, which has definitely helped her to focus on her goals.

She added: “I’m fiercely competitive and my father fuelled this, encouraged this thoroughly because he always wanted me to beat him at the game, which I did manage once! He is a very clever chess partner and I love to play with him because he doesn’t give me any room to make errors even though I’m his daughter!”

Manushi says her father is also equally competitive.

“It’s exasperating and it’s equally thrilling! He is equally competitive! So, the games just become too much fun. We have had several nailbiters and I can say that I’m still learning from him.”

Manushi is all set to make her Bollywood debut opposite superstar Akshay Kumar in the upcoming film “Prithviraj”.

Directed by Chandraprakash Dwivedi, “Prithviraj” is based on the life of king Prithviraj Chauhan. It stars Akshay as Prithviraj, while Manushi will play the role of the Sanyogita, the love of his life.

Common blood test can advance heart failure treatment

0

Researchers have developed a new use for a common blood test, which could provide potentially life-saving treatment for heart failure.

According to the study, published in the journal Frontiers in Physiology, biomedical experts believe that half of heart failure patients likely have low levels of the thyroid hormone T3 in their cardiac tissue.

A growing number of studies suggest that low cardiac T3 may significantly contribute to a patient’s symptoms and underlying heart dysfunction.

The symptoms of low cardiac T3 are also virtually indistinguishable from other conditions that lead to heart failure, suggesting that a significant number of underlying heart dysfunction and heart failure symptoms may actually be caused by a treatable T3 hormone imbalance.

“Despite this treatability, clinicians are hesitant to prescribe T3 to heart patients, as too much of the hormone could accidentally trigger an irregular heartbeat,” the study authors from New York Institute of Technology (NYIT) in the US, wrote.

In addition, no method has yet been identified to titrate, or continually measure and adjust, for the dosage of T3 needed to safely restore the heart’s thyroid hormone function.

Now, an existing biomarker called brain natriuretic peptide (BNP) may provide the much-needed solution, the researchers said.

In medicine, biomarkers are biological molecules found in a patient’s blood, fluid, or tissue sample that can indicate whether a disease or condition is present.

They can also be used to see how well the body responds to treatments.

During heart failure, the heart will secrete higher levels of the biomarker BNP into blood, a key indication that the heart disease is worsening.

The researchers hypothesized that by analyzing a patient’s BNP levels in response to added T3, clinicians could titrate for just the right dosage required.

Using rat models of heart failure caused by low T3 and heart attack, the researchers tested their theory, examining changes in BNP, cardiac function, and heart failure genes after T3 treatment.

For the first time, they discovered through a simple blood test, not an extensive, invasive procedure, that T3 could be adjusted to safely restore cardiac hormone balance.

In addition, because heart patients routinely undergo BNP and thyroid hormone testing, these widely used biomarkers could be easily monitored from blood tests.

“The results were remarkable, suggesting that serum BNP levels can be used to titrate the volume of T3 required,” said study researchers Martin Gerdes from NYIT.

“When T3 treatment led to a reduction in serum BNP levels, this was associated with improved cardiac function and reversal of these heart failure genes,” Gerdes added.

China attacking Modi’s fake image of strongman: Rahul

0

Former Congress chief Rahul Gandhi on Monday once again sharpened his attack on Prime Minister Narendra Modi over the India-China border face-off issue saying he fabricated a “fake” strongman image to come to power and now his biggest strength is “India’s biggest weakness”.

He also said that the Chinese are attacking the idea of a 56-inch image of the Prime Minister and trying to manipulate.

“The Prime Minister fabricated a fake strongman image to come to power. It was his biggest strength. It is now India’s biggest weakness,” Rahul Gandhi said in a tweet attaching his second video of the series.

In his video, Rahul Gandhi said, it is not “simply” a border issue.

“The worry I have is that the Chinese are sitting in our territory today. Chinese don’t do anything without thinking about its strategies. In their mind, they have mapped out a world and they are trying to shape the world. That’s the scale of what they are doing, what is Gwadar is, and what is one belt and road is. It is the restructuring of the planet. So if you are thinking of the Chinese you have to understand that. That’s the level of their thinking,” he said.

Slamming the government furthers the Congress leader said now at the “tactical” level they (Chinese) are trying to improve their position whether its Galway, Demchok, or Pangong lake.

“The idea is to position themselves, they are disturbed by our highways, they are making our highways redundant. If they are thinking at a larger scale they want to do something with Pakistan in Kashmir.

“So it is not simply a border issue. It is a border issue designed to put pressure on the Prime Minister and they are thinking of putting pressure in a very particular way,” the Congress leader noted.

Hitting out at the Prime Minister, Rahul Gandhi said that what Chinese are doing is they are attacking Modi’s image.

“They understand in order for Modi to be an effective politician, to survive as a politician he has to protect the idea of 56 inches and this is the real idea of the Chinese attack,” he said.

“They (Chinese) are basically telling Modi that if you do not do what we say we will destroy the idea of Modi as a strong leader,” the Congress Lok Sabha MP from Kerala’s Wayanad said.

Firing salvos at the Prime Minister, Rahul Gandhi said, “Now the question is how will Modi react? Will he take them on? Will he take on the challenge and say absolutely not, I am the Prime Minister and I do not care about my image and I am going to take you on. Or will he succumb?”

He further said that the “worry that I have so far is that the Prime Minister has succumbed to pressure”.

“The worry I have that the Chinese are sitting in our territory today and the Prime Minister has said publicly that they are not,” he said.

“Which to me tells me that he is worried about his image and he is defending his image and if he allows the Chinese to understand that they can manipulate him because of his image the Indian Prime Minister will no longer be worth anyway for India,” he added.

On Friday, Rahul Gandhi released his first video and questioned the government’s foreign policy. He also slammed the Narendra Modi government over the face-off with China in Ladakh.

He also explained the reasons for China ‘selecting this time to intrude on our land and released a video on it.

He has been critical of the government over the handling of the Line of Actual Control (LAC) situation with China after the killing of 20 Indian soldiers, including an officer on June 15 in Ladakh’s Galway area by the Chinese People’s Liberation Army (PLA). He has questioned the government over its claim that China did not occupy or intrude into India.
