TikTok pulled 16mn videos from Indian users in 2019’s 2nd half

0

TikTok removed 16 million videos from Indian users in the last six months of 2019 for violating its content policies, the short video-sharing platform said in a transparency report on Thursday.

The total number of videos removed globally during the same period stood at 49 million, according to the report.

The report also revealed that TikTok received a total of 302 requests from India and the platform complied with 90 percent of the requests. With 100 requests, the US came second to India in terms of the number of requests.

The number of videos that TikTok removed globally represented less than 1 percent of videos uploaded during the six-month period, The Verge reported.

Compared to the 49 million videos removed by TikTok, YouTube pulled around 14.7 million videos during the second half of 2019.

TikTok said it did not receive any takedown requests or user information requests from China.

“We do not and have not removed any content at the request of the Chinese government, and would not do so if asked,” a TikTok spokesperson was quoted as saying by The Verge.

India recently banned TikTok, along with 58 other China-linked apps, over national security concerns.

“TikTok continues to comply with all data privacy and security requirements under Indian law and has not shared any information of our users in India with any foreign government, including the Chinese Government,” Nikhil Gandhi, Head of TikTok India, said in a statement following the announcement of the ban by the Indian government.

“Further if we are requested to in the future, we would not do so,” he added.

BCCI CEO Rahul Johri asked to leave via mail

0

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) CEO Rahul Johri has been asked to leave over mail. John had earlier tendered his resignation but was asked to continue. But the recent leak over the tender with regards to team sponsorship looks like one of the major reasons for the current office bearers asking him to leave.

Speaking to IANS, a board official said that the leak of confidential financial information was like the nail in the coffin as the current dispensation believes in utmost transparency in its functioning.

“He has been informed of the decision by email. He had resigned earlier and was asked to continue in the interim. However, the leak of confidential financial information of a bid that was being prepared accelerated the decision. Highest levels of confidentiality are expected when any bid takes place in an organization,” the official said.

“This was considered to be scandalous and had the potential to compromise the bid. Financial matters if you cannot keep confidential, then it is a serious lapse that cannot be excused, especially with the new BCCI.”

A BCCI functionary said that maybe he was a little overconfident ever since he escaped with gender sensitization after allegations of sexual harassment against him.

“Maybe he was a little overconfident. He was able to survive despite his earlier conduct and there was an inquiry into allegations of sexual harassment against him. The reports of which were not even made available to the complainants which were found to be very surprising. Yet, he was asked to undergo gender sensitization.

“We felt that to have a CEO who has undergone this punishment was not appropriate for a role which requires you to give a fillip to women’s cricket. And as CEO he had to meet market leaders. He is certainly not the man who is capable of leading India towards the resumption of cricket. The female cricketers and women working in BCCI must be feeling relieved,” the functionary told IANS.

Former CoA member Diana Edulji said that justice has finally prevailed. “Women cricketers and staff will heave a sigh of relief and after all this indiscipline during the nomination of coaches and all, he was rewarded with an increment which I was against. Better later than never. Justice has been done,” she told IANS.

NY prosecutors can see Trump’s financial records: US SC

0

The US Supreme Court has ruled that President Donald Trump’s financial records can be examined by prosecutors in New York.

In a related case, the court ruled that this information did not have to be shared with Congress, the BBC reported on Thursday.

Trump has come under fire for not making his tax returns public like his predecessors.

His lawyers had argued that he enjoyed total immunity while in office and that Congress had no valid justification to seek the records.

Two Democratic-controlled House of Representatives committees and New York District Attorney Cyrus Vance – also a Democrat – had demanded Trump’s tax documents over several years in order to determine whether current conflict-of-interest laws on a US president were tough enough.

Trump, a Republican, denies wrongdoing and has called the investigation into his tax affairs a “witch hunt”.

“The Supreme Court sends the case back to Lower Court, arguments to continue. This is all a political prosecution,” he wrote in a series of tweets following the court rulings.

In the case regarding the request from the New York prosecutors, the Supreme Court ruled by a majority of seven to two that the president did not have absolute immunity from criminal investigation.

“Two hundred years ago, a great jurist of our Court established that no citizen, not even the President, is categorically above the common duty to produce evidence when called upon in a criminal proceeding,” the court said.

“We reaffirm that principle today.”

But the two cases regarding Congressional committees were closely watched, as they could have had implications on how far US lawmakers could scrutinize the activities of a sitting president.

The court ruled that Congress had significant, but not limitless, the power to request the president’s personal information. In this case, the court returned the case to the lower courts.

The Develop in Swift curriculum is now completely redesigned to meet student learning styles, based on educator input continuously sourced by Apple.

Truecaller says ban by Indian Army ‘unjust’

0

With the Indian Army asking its personnel to delete 89 apps, the Swedish caller identification app Truecaller on Thursday termed its inclusion in the list of the prohibited applications as “unfair” and “unjust”.

The list not only includes Chinese apps like TikTok that have already been banned by the government but also has popular platforms like Facebook, Instagram, Snapchat, Zoom, and Reddit, among others.

The Indian Army wants its personnel to delete these apps over national security concerns.

“It is disappointing and saddening to learn that Truecaller is among the list of 89 apps being banned by the Indian Armed Forces for their personnel. Truecaller is an app of Swedish origin that considers India it’s home,” a Truecaller spokesperson said in a statement.

Headquartered in Stockholm, Truecaller provides a suite of services such as a dialer that offers caller ID, spam detection, messaging, and more.

“We would like to reiterate that Truecaller remains safe to use, both for our citizens and for our esteemed armed forces personnel. We see no reason for Truecaller to be on this list and will investigate the matter further,” added the statement.

“Truecaller provides a vital service for over 170 million people in India, identifying and blocking hundreds of millions of spam calls and SMS every single day,” it added.

Saying its inclusion in the list “unfair” and “unjust”, Truecaller added that it stores all user data in India and all app features are permission-based and disabled by default.

Moreover, a majority of Truecaller employees globally are Indian and the platform does not upload phonebooks or sell user data, it claimed.

In 2019, in a nightmare for thousands of Truecaller users in India, a so-called bug automatically created their Unified Payments Interface (UPI) accounts with the ICICI Bank without their consent, triggering panic and hacking fears.

Truecaller later apologized to the users who were affected by the bug.

No BLM logo during 3TC match as jerseys have gone to print, says Smith

0

Cricket South Africa (CSA) will be discussing ways to express support for the Black Lives Matter movement but it may not be possible for having a BLM logo on the jerseys for the 3TC match as they have already been made. CSA Director of Cricket Graeme Smith said that there will be a discussion with players about how to go about it.

“We’re discussing various ways of handling it. The kit has gone to print already. We need to figure out how we can be effective about it, authentic, and spread the messages that are meaningful to us as South Africans and how it affects us on a daily basis,” Smith is quoted as saying by ESPNCricinfo.

The unique 3TC match features three teams playing in the same game. Smith said that while he is confident of coming across no opposition to taking any stand during the match, it is important to get everyone on the same page about it.

“We are all in our own little pockets and I think it’s important that in the future we all come together and figure out how we can play our role in the Black Lives Matter movement,” Smith said.

“My belief in these things is that its important to have buy-in and everyone invested in it as well and I have no doubt that will be the case but the discussion in each team environment and as CSA how we handle it going forward is important. We do have the 3TC approaching and that will be our first occasion with the Black Lives Matter movement.”
