0

Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan on Thursday said that a Covid positive patient in Kannur died, while there were 83 fresh positive cases, taking the state’s tally to 1,258.

The deceased had serious liver ailments, he added.

Of the new cases, 27 came from abroad, 37 from within the country, 14 were local infectees and five were health professionals.

Vijayan said starting January 30, when the first case in the country was registered in Thrissur, so far 2,244 have become positive.

“By now, over 2.18 lakh are presently under observation at homes, corona care centers which includes 1,922 in hospitals. As on date, 133 hotspots are there in the state now,” he said.

Vijayan also pointed out that with more of the diaspora and those from other states set to come back, quarantine rules are also being modified.

“All those who come from abroad, if they have a facility at home, they can stay at home, with the knowledge of the local authorities. Those who do not have the facility at home can opt for institutional quarantine of the state government and those who prefer paid quarantine can opt for that also,” he said.

“Likewise those arriving from within the country have to register in the state portal and go for home quarantine, institutional or paid ones,” he added.

He also announced that from now on, every day before 12 midnight, the containment zones would be announced and it would be based on the number of positive cases, primary and secondary contacts.

“Streets, wards and sub wards would be marked as containment zones depending on the above guidelines,” he said.

Vijayan said it was unfortunate that two people in observation had committed suicide at the Medical College hospital on Wednesday and it is not right to pick wrongs in effective control at the hospitals.

On Thursday, both the Congress and the BJP staged protests in front of the state Secretariat and in front of State Health Minister K.K. Shailaja’s official residence stating that this incident occurred because of a lack of effective control.

Health Minister Rajesh Tope said besides Dean B. R. Khaire, a superintendent, the attached medical college principal, nurse and security person were slapped with suspension orders.

The developments came a day after the shocking recovery of the dead body of the 82-year old woman being found from the toilet of the same hospital on Wednesday, as reported by IANS.

Zillapeth Police Station’s Senior Police Inspector Akbar Patel said that the Jalgaon Civil Hospital authorities and the family had informed the police that she was “missing” on June 2.

The JCH authorities confirmed that she was seen in the ward till June 2 after which the whereabouts of the woman were not known.

It was on Wednesday morning when some people reported a foul smell emanating from one of the toilets in the hospital and the missing woman’s body was found there.

Himachal’s mobile clinics meet twin objectives: Covid screening & healthcare at doorstep

0

One can notice mobile clinics in the bordering areas of Himachal Pradesh whose primary job is to screen those coming in from other states. These mobile clinics have doctors at hand to help and are equipped to conduct 40 types of tests.

These clinics also carry photographs of Anurag Thakur, MP from Himachal’s Hamirpur, and also Union Minister of State for Finance and Corporate Affairs. The mobile clinic concept is his personal initiative.

In the last three months, Thakur has arranged 17 such mobile clinics that carry medicines along with doctors, nurses, and paramedics. More than 30,000 people entering the state have so far been tested by these clinics in an effort to prevent the spread of coronavirus.

This is part of Thakur’s MP Mobile Health Service which he started two years ago. The initiative has helped in rendering health services to over 2 lakh patients in Thakur’s Hamirpur constituency, which has several villages in hilly areas and where people face a lot of problems in getting hospital facilities.

He arranged such vehicles for each of the 17 assembly constituencies of Hamirpur. The ambulances were transformed into mobile clinics which are now deployed along the state borders to conduct corona screening of outsiders.

“These mobile clinics are active in five districts, 17 assembly constituencies, 800 panchayats of around 5,000 villages in Hamirpur parliamentary constituency. Forty tests including a lipid profile, LFT/KFT, creatinine, uric acid, sugar glucose, hepatitis B/C can be conducted and medicines distributed for free-of-cost. Plus, these clinics also conduct corona tests for those who are entering Himachal Pradesh,” Thakur told IANS.

He said the MP Mobile Health Service has so far conducted 30,000 primary tests for coronavirus, proving its worth. “All states and the Centre are working in coordination under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi to fight Covid-19. In such difficult times, these mobile clinics are doing their part in our state,” said Thakur.

“Very rarely have old memories flashed in front of me in such a sweet manner as was experienced after watching my montage with the voice-over of Janhvi Kapoor. I guess it is the time for the culmination of an enriching journey that started with Sharan Sharma three years back. And what a journey it has been with Sharan. But at times a one-track mind on goal does help. During my tenure in IAF, whatever little I could achieve was with the help of men and women in blue uniforms.”

Janhvi captioned the image: “It’s an honor to know you let alone have the privilege to be able to understand your journey and share it with the world. Hope we make you proud Gunjan Maam.”

“Gunjan Saxena: The Kargil Girl” is inspired by the life of Indian Air Force combat pilot Gunjan Saxena, and stars Janhvi in the titular role. Saxena entered the war zone during the 1999 Kargil War.

Private health sector to join hands to tackle Covid in Kerala

0

Kerala Health Minister K.K. Shailaja on Thursday informed that following a discussion with the private health sector, they have pledged full support to tackle the state government’s initiatives in tackling the Covid-19 pandemic.

About 100 officials from the private health sector took part in the online discussion.

“They have pledged their full support to the state government in treating COVID patients and also other ailments. They have agreed to provide their laboratories and ventilator facilities if a need arises,” said Shailaja.

“Today’s discussions were a follow up on the earlier one that Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan had called and sought the support of the private health sector. We are fully geared as more and more Kerala diaspora are expected to return in the coming weeks and for that, we have given training to 1.3 million health workers in both the private and public sectors. No community transmission of Covid-19 in India, says ICMR

0

There is no community transmission of Covid-19 at the national level, while the lockdown measures helped in controlling the spread of the deadly virus until now, the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) Director-General Balram Bhargava said on Thursday.

“There is a heightened debate on community transmission. WHO has not given a definition of it. India is such a large country and the prevalence is so low. The prevalence is less than one percent in small districts. It is slightly higher in urban areas. In the containment areas, it may be slightly higher. But, we are definite that India is not in community transmission,” Bhargava said at the daily press briefing.

“I would like to emphasize that it is not in community transmission.”

The ICMR chief, however, said they have to continue with the strategy of testing, tracing, tracking and quarantine. He also stressed to continue with the containment measures, saying “we have found success with those measures until now”.

The ICMR’s clarification comes amid India recording its biggest single-day jump in new coronavirus cases with 9,996 fresh infections and 357 patients dying, taking the total number of cases to nearly 2.86 lakh cases. This is the ninth consecutive day that the country – fifth worst-hit by the pandemic – reported over 9,000 Covid-19 cases.

COVID-19: ITF to distribute $350,000 to lower ranking players

0

The International Tennis Federation (ITF) on Thursday announced that it will distribute $350,000 to help players ranked 501 to 700 in ATP or WTA singles and 176 to 300 in doubles affected by the COVID-19 crisis.

Having previously contributed to the joint Player Relief Programme for players inside the top 500, the ITF announced it had made an additional $350,000 available to support players ranked ATP/WTA 501-700 in singles “and/or 176-300 in doubles”.

The funding will be distributed in the form of development grants to eligible players via national associations, with singles players ranked 501–600 receiving $1,000, and doubles players ranked 176–300 and singles players ranked 601-700 receiving $750, said ITF.

ITF President David Haggerty said: “Despite the significant challenges that have resulted from this pandemic, the ITF has been resolute in our desire to help as many of our stakeholders as possible.”

“We do not have unlimited resources, so we have focused our efforts where they are most needed.

“There remains much uncertainty, but I am confident that as we continue to pull together and make the right decisions, tennis will make a strong recovery,” he added.

Since professional tennis was suspended on 12 March, the ITF has seen more than 1,100 of its events canceled or postponed. Professional tennis currently remains suspended till July 31 due to coronavirus pandemic which has so far claimed more than 4 lakh lives across the world.

Netizens questioned Renu Desai

0

The fans of Powerstar Pawan Kalyan have shown perpetual interest in the actor and his ex-wife Renu Desai’s topic and they never get bored of it. Some of his ardent fans even get emotionally excited when talking about their love life or on their divorce. The couple, who split their ways back in 2012, are not comfortable talking about their divorce on the public domain, just like any other ex-couples.

In fact, Renu Desai has quite a few times articulated that she feels comfortable only when fans leave things easy without fussing more about her past. Her latest photo today shows Renu wearing black beads. Netizens are quick to observe it and questioned her on the same. Some have expressed their queries on why is she still wearing it even after divorcing PK. Some raised doubts if she remarried now.

Black beads have a prominent significance in Indian marriages and it is to indicate love and commitment during marriage towards each other. Yes, Renu Desai wore it despite her divorce but do we seriously need to look into her personal space? There is a thing called freedom and she deserves it. Users asking her repeatedly about such trivial things are quite regressive. However, if there is anything happening in her personal life, let’s wait and see until she announces.

One cannot decide just by looking at a woman if she is a divorcee or married as many modern women don’t wear black beads in spite of leading a happy life with husbands. Similarly, just because Renu Desai wears it still, doesn’t mean she is still into Pawan Kalyan. Fans are also curious that she must have married secretly to someone, which also leaves us chuckled and facepalmed.

Though black beads/Mangalsutra are a sign of marital status, we believe, Renu Desai must be still bounded by the concept of true love, ethics and her own personal belief system which we shouldn’t invade. Well, what are your views on it? Leave it in the comment section.

Financial impact of COVID-19 is set to have a huge impact on the Premier League

0

Premier League clubs made a combined loss of 600 million pounds in the 2018/19 season, even before suffering the financial pain of the coronavirus pandemic, a report revealed on Tuesday. Analysis from football finance experts Vysyble shows the 20 clubs in the English top-flight combined to post the huge loss despite record revenues of 5.15 billion pounds

The financial impact of COVID-19 is set to have a huge impact on the Premier League, even if plans to complete the current season behind closed doors go smoothly. Premier League sides face paying a reported 330 million pounds to broadcasters in rebates as matches could not be completed on schedule. An estimated 126 million pounds could also be lost in matchday income from gate receipts and hospitality.

“The COVID-19 virus is not the cause of football’s financial distress. It is merely the accelerant on what our data has very clearly and very correctly identified as a much longer-term problem,” said Vysyble director Roger Bell.

“The 2018/19 numbers are a disturbing and profoundly worrying financial outcome from England’s senior football divisions and is symptomatic of the deeper issues with the overall financial model.”

Wage costs for Premier League clubs have risen to 3.12 billion pounds.Everton posted alarming losses of 111 million pounds, while Chelsea’s failure to qualify for the Champions League saw the Blues lose 96 million pounds.Yet the most worrying sign for the future financial health of the league may come from Tottenham.

Spurs posted a league-high profit of 68.6 million pounds for the 2018/19 season on the back of a run to the Champions League final. But the London club announced last week they had borrowed 175 million pounds from the Bank of England.

They fear they could lose 200 million pounds over the next year due to the loss of matchday income, cancellation of non-football events such as NFL matches and concerts and rebates owed to broadcasters.

“Our data has consistently demonstrated that football has been the master of its own misfortune with an over-reliance on TV revenues, staff cost-to-revenue ratios regularly in excess of safe operating limits and a failure to recognise key financial dynamics and trends,” added Bell. The economic outlook for the Championship is also bleak.

“I had a tennis court so I could train every day,” said Djokovic referring to his period of confinement in Spain, where he was staying with his family at a home in Marbella.Thiem said he was the best prepared player in Belgrade since he has played matches in Austria behind closed doors.

“felt like I have shaken hands with god” : Yuvraj Singh

0

Yuvraj Singh recalled his first meeting with Master Blaster Sachin Tendulkar, saying it “felt like I have shaken hands with god”. Yuvraj was replying to a tweet from Sachin Tendulkar as the former India batsman sent in good wishes for the all-rounder as he completed one year of his retirement from all forms of cricket.

Replying to Sachin’s tweet, Yuvraj wrote: “Thank u, Master. When we 1st met, I felt I have shaken hands with god. U’ve guided me in my toughest phases. U taught me to believe in my abilities. I’ll play the same role for youngsters that you played for me. Looking 4wd to many more wonderful memories with you”.

My first memory of you was during the Chennai camp & I couldn’t help but notice that you were very athletic & deceptively quick at Point. I needn’t talk about your 6 hitting ability, it was evident you could clear any ground in the world.

Tendulkar had made his debut in Test cricket on November 15, 1989. In the same year on December 18, he played his first ODI match.

The legendary cricketer has the most number of runs in the longest format of the game, amassing 15,921 runs.

Along the way, Tendulkar scored 51 Test centuries, most by any player. Things are no different in ODI cricket as Tendulkar atop the list of most runs in this format as well.

He has accumulated 18,426 runs in ODI which includes 49 tons. Tendulkar represented the country in six World Cups during his career that lasted for 24 years. He was the part of the 2011 World Cup-winning squad.

On the other hand, Yuvraj Singh’s career spanned over 304 ODIs, 58 T20Is, and 40 Tests. Big events brought out the best in him – be it his international cricket entry at 2000 ICC Champions Trophy, the mind-numbing batting exhibition at inaugural 2007 World Twenty20, or the all-round performance at 2011 World Cup.

A fighter to the core, Yuvraj battled all odds to return to the cricket field after successfully treating the rare germ cell tumour.Yuvraj called time on his career after registering 11,778 runs across all three formats of the game and he also managed to scalp 148 wickets.

Lara McDonnell: Josh Gad is just great

0

Actress Lara McDonnell says working with actor Josh Gad is a fun ride, adding that they were “trying so hard not to crack up the whole time” while shooting for the film “Artemis Fowl”.

“The first scene I did with Josh wasn’t actually a proper scene, it was just improvised together to see what we would look like together, and this was ages before we began filming and it was the most funny thing I’ve ever done in my life,” McDonnell said while recalling her experience of shooting with Gad.

“We were trying so hard not to crack up the whole time. He just knows the character so well. But Mulch (Gad’s character) is always silly and he’s funny and that’s why I think he’s a lot of people’s favorite character because he’s always there to bring the fun, and he’s kind of like insane and crazy, but really funny. Josh is just great,” she added.

“Artemis Fowl” brings alive the world of the book by Eoin Colfer, taking the audience on a fantastical adventure into the magical world of fairies, dwarves, and centaurs. It narrates the story of a 12-year-old genius, Artemis Fowl, a descendant of a long line of criminal masterminds, as he goes on a mission to save his father who has been kidnapped.

Amid the Covid-19 crisis, “Artemis Fowl”, which was scheduled to open in theatres, will now get a digital premiere on Disney+ Hotstar.

Black Lives Matter protests hijacked by left-wing agendas: Aus PM

0

Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison on Thursday said that the recent Black Lives Matter protests in the country has been hijacked by “left-wing agendas”.

Morrison rejected calls to tear down statues of historical figures including Captain James Cook, who claimed Australia for the British Empire in 1770, amid the removal of statues of contentious figures in the US and UK, reports Xinhua news agency.

“I think what we’re seeking with some of these protests, they start on a fair point when they’re raising issues about, you know, people’s treatment in custody or things like that,” Morrison, who represents the electorate named after Cook, told Nine Entertainment radio.

“But now it’s being taken over by other much more politically driven left-wing agendas, which are seeking to take advantage of these opportunities to push their political causes.

“I’ve always said we’ve got to be honest about our history. We’ve got to acknowledge the positive and the negative.

“I think we’ve also got to respect our history as well. And this is not a license for people to just go nuts on this stuff,” he said.

The Prime Minister confirmed that the protests earlier in June that were attended by tens of thousands of Australians have delayed the easing of coronavirus restrictions by a week.

Health authorities are waiting to analyze if the mass gatherings cause a spike in cases before proceeding with lifting restrictions.

“The rally last weekend is the only legitimate real block to this at the moment because we actually don’t know right now whether those rallies on the weekend may have caused outbreaks,” he said.

“People who rallied this (past) weekend showed great disrespect for their neighbors.”

Amazon bans police use of its face recognition tech for 1 year

0

Amazon has announced to apply the brakes on its facial recognition technology for police for one year, in the wake of potential misuse of the technology by the cops as racial protests gain steam in the US after the death of African-American George Floyd.

The eCommerce giant, however, did not say whether federal law enforcement agencies would also now allowed to use its face recognition technology called Rekognition’.

“We’re implementing a one-year moratorium on police use of Amazon’s facial recognition technology. We will continue to allow organizations like Thorn, the International Center for Missing and Exploited Children, and Marinus Analytics to use Amazon Rekognition to help rescue human trafficking victims and reunite missing children with their families,” Amazon said in a statement late Wednesday.

Technology giant IBM this week terminated its general-purpose facial recognition and analysis software products.

IBM CEO Arvind Krishna said in a letter to the US Congress that users of Artificial Intelligence-based systems have a shared responsibility to ensure that Al is tested for bias, particularity when used in law enforcement.

Amazon said that they have advocated that governments should put in place stronger regulations to govern the ethical use of facial recognition technology.

“In recent days, Congress appears ready to take on this challenge. We hope this one-year moratorium might give Congress enough time to implement appropriate rules, and we stand ready to help if requested,” said the Jeff Bezos-run company.

IBM also firmly opposed any such technology, including “facial recognition technology offered by other vendors, for mass surveillance, racial profiling, violations of basic human rights and freedoms, or any purpose which is not consistent with our values and Principles of Trust and Transparency”.

“We believe now is the time to begin a national dialogue on whether and how facial recognition technology should be employed by domestic law enforcement agencies,” said Krishna.

Often touted as a tool that can help law enforcement agencies to quickly track criminals, facial recognition technology has courted controversy for the enormous potential of its misuse and lack of regulation.

Facebook in January agreed to pay $550 million to settle a 2015 class-action privacy lawsuit against its use of facial recognition technology in a US state.

New York-based Clearview AI recently said in a legal filing that it will not make its facial recognition app available to non-governmental customers anywhere.

Microsoft President Brad Smith has time and again vouched for implementing the ethical use of face recognition technology.
