Beware of mobile banking malware EventBot, warns CERT-In

0

An Android mobile banking malware called “EventBot” which steals user data from financial applications is spreading, warns the Indian Computer Emergency Response Team (CERT-In).

This mobile banking Trojan abuses Android’s in-built accessibility features to steal user data, read user SMS messages and intercept SMS messages, allowing malware to bypass two-factor authentication, the cybersecurity agency said in its advisory this month.

EventBot targets over 200 different financial applications, including banking applications, money-transfer services, and cryptocurrency wallets, or financial applications based in the US and Europe region at the moment but some of their services may affect Indian users as well.

The malware largely targets financial applications like Paypal Business, Revolut, Barclays, UniCredit, CapitalOne UK, HSBC UK, TransferWise, Coinbase, paysafecard etc., said CERT-In.

While EventBot has not been seen on Google Play Store yet, it uses several icons to masquerade as a legitimate application.

EventBot is using third-party application downloading site to infiltrate into the victim device, the CERT-In warned.

“Once installed on victim’s Android device, it asks permissions such as controlling system alerts, reading external storage content, installing additional packages, accessing Internet, whitelisting it to ignore battery optimisation, prevent processor from sleeping or dimming the screen, auto-initiate upon reboot, receive and read SMS messages, and continue running and accessing data in the background,” the cybersecurity agency said in its advisory.

Further, the malware prompts the users to give access to their device accessibility services.

“Also, it can retrieve notifications about other installed applications and read contents of other applications. Over the time, it can also read Lock Screen and in-app PIN that can give attacker more privileged access over victim device,” the advisory said.

To help users prevent the malware infection into Android phones, the cyber-security agency recommended certain counter-measures.

“Do not download and install applications from untrusted sources (offered via unknown websites/ links on unscrupulous messages),” it said.

It also asked users to install updated anti-virus solution on Android devices.

Ministry wants better monitoring in 30 municipal areas with 80% corona cases

0

The Union Health Ministry on Saturday said officials of 30 municipal areas contributing 80% of Covid-19 cases should maintain high vigilance and monitoring in areas of old cities, urban slums and other high- density pockets along with camps for migrant workers to manage COVID-19 in urban areas.

Health Secretary Preeti Sudan held a high-level review meeting with the Principal Health Secretaries, Municipal Commissioners, district magistrates (DMs) and other officials from the 30 municipal areas which are contributing almost 80% of the country’s Covid-19 cases.

The officials of these 30 municipal areas were informed about the management of indicators such as the high doubling rate, high case fatality rate and high confirmation percentages seen in the containment zones.

“It was also highlighted that especially in the densely populated urban areas, more challenges need to be considered such as poor socio-economic conditions, limited health infrastructure, lack of social distancing and issues faced by women among others factors”, said a statement issued by the Health Ministry.

It highlighted that the geographic area of the containment zones should be defined based on factors such as mapping of cases & contacts, geographical dispersion of cases and contacts, area with well-demarcated perimeter and enforceability.

These 30 municipal areas are from the following States/UTs: Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu, Gujarat, Delhi, Madhya Pradesh, West Bengal, Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, Telangana, Andhra Pradesh, Punjab and Odisha.

The Health Secretary also emphasized that along with the containment and management of COVID-19 cases, the issue of continuing all essential non-COVID health services in the urban localities such as RMNCHA+N care, cancer treatment, TB surveillance, immunization efforts and vector control measures in view of the ensuing monsoon need to be ensured.

The Health Ministry asked the municipal areas to focus on effective risk communication in order to build trust and confidence. The ministry asked the officials concerned to engage with community leaders and local opinion leaders who could accompany the local surveillance teams to encourage cooperation from the local communities.

“Mumbai shared its experience of ‘containment leaders’, who were local community elders and leaders working with ward officers to support the government efforts in encouraging the people particularly in the slum clusters”, said the statement.

According to the ministry, a total of 30,150 people have been cured. “In the last 24 hours, 2233 patients were found cured. This takes the total recovery rate to 35.09%. The total number of confirmed cases is now 85,940. Since yesterday, an increase of 3,970 has been noted in the number of COVID-19 confirmed cases in India”, said the ministry.

The Health Secretary also emphasized that attention needs to be accorded to timely tracing of patients to improve recovery percentage, SARI/ILI surveillance and more effective human resource management.

South Central Railway develops RAIL-BOT for patient care in hospitals

0

Amid increased attention to physical distancing, South Central Railway (SCR) Zone of Indian Railways has developed a robotic device equipped to effectively manage patient care in hospitals.

The robotic device, christened “RAIL BOT” (R-BOT) has been developed by Hem Singh Banoth, Additional Divisional Railway Manager, Hyderabad Division, SCR and his team. it has undergone extensive trials and demonstration before its use at the Central Railway Hospital, Secunderabad.

SCR officials said the R-BOT can be operated by using Android mobile app and radio frequency (RF) remote control.

R-BOT is being used to provide medicines, medical accessories, and to serve food to the patients, taking away the need for human contact in such activities.

As a result, doctors, nurses and other support medical staff are better placed to stay away from the risks of contacting infections.

The R-BOT is operated through a unique mobile application, and supported by Wi-Fi facility. Using sensor-based features, the robot can read the body temperature of patients, and transmit it for display on a mobile phone.

It is also capable of raising an alarm in case of any abnormally high body temperature readings to alert medics attending to the patients.

The R-BOT is equipped with a real-time video camera that has pan & tilt functions. The robot also performs as a two-way audio and video communication with recording facility, helping in a smooth interaction between patients and doctors.

It uses infra-red technology with emergency night lamp & night vision to enable communication even in complete darkness. It can circumvent any foreign objects in its path with the help of inbuilt observation avoidance sensors.

Moving at a speed of 1 kmph and a load-carrying capacity of 80 kg, the R-Bot is capable of continuously functioning for six hours on a single charge of battery.

SCR officials said that plans are afoot to further innovate and develop the R-BOT, in terms of optimal functional efficiency, which can lead to more widespread use of the device at the medical facilities in the railway zone.

Gavaskar picks Hanif Mohammad & Sehwag to open in his Ind-Pak XI

0

Former India captain Sunil Gavaskar made a combined India and Pakistan XI out of players that he would love to see play. He admitted that this may not be the best eleven players that may have represented the two sides statistically, but these are players that he would like to see playing together.

Interacting with former Pakistan skipper Ramiz Raja on the Sony Ten show Pit Stop and a part of the Blue Revolution Series which was streamed live on the network’s Facebook page, Gavaskar said that regardless of what happens if this team actually played or not, he expects the dressing room to be “hilarious.” It will be difficult to get the boys out of the dressing room because they will be having so much fun.

Gavaskar chose the an opening pair of Virender Sehwag and the legendary Pakistan batsman Hanif Mohammad, who was the first batsman outside of Australia and England, to score a triple century in Test cricket and who was originally called the ‘Little Master’ before the title was assumed by Gavaskar himself and later Sachin Tendulkar.

Pakistan great Zaheer Abbas comes in at no.3 and India’s Sachin Tendulkar follows. Former India batsman Gundappa Viswanath comes in at no.5 while Kapul Dev slots in at no.6. Imran Khan followed suit after which Gavaskar chose Syed Kirmani as his wicketkeeper. Wasim Akram, Abdul Qadir and former Indian leg spinner BS Chandrashekhar completed the team.

Gavaskar’s India-Pakistan XI: Hanif Mohammad, Virender Sehwag, Zaheer Abbas, Sachin Tendulkar, Gundappa Viswanath, Kapil Dev, Imran Khan, Syed Kirmani, Wasim Akram, Waqar Younis, Abdul Qadir

HC, subordinate courts to perform limited functions till May 23

0

The Delhi High Court has extended suspension of its as well as subordinate courts’ full functioning till May 23 in the wake of the Covid-19 crisis.

“The administrative and general supervision committee of this court, while considering further extension of suspended functioning of this and the courts subordinate to it, has been pleased to order that the functioning of the courts subordinate to Delhi High Court shall continue to remain suspended till May 23,” said an order signed by Delhi High Court Registrar General Manoj Jain.

While the arrangement regarding mentioning and hearing of the urgent matters would continue, the high court has increased the number of single-judge benches to 10. The subordinate courts would continue to take up urgent matters related to bail, stay/injunction as per the directions already issued, it said.

“All the courts shall also take up the matters ready for final arguments, while giving preference to more than 10-year-old cases and cases where the accused is in the judicial custody. MM (mahila courts) shall take up matters in which interim urgent relief has been sought under the Protection of Women from Domestic Violence Act, 1985. Rent controllers/additional rent controller shall take up matters in which application seeking leave to contest/defend is pending disposal in the cases filed on the ground of bonafide requirement,” the court said.

It also said no adverse order should be passed by the subordinate courts without giving hearing through video link or without having written submissions from the concerned counsel.

On Friday, taking suo motu cognizance of the “extraordinary circumstances” arising out of nationwide lockdown, the Delhi High Court extended till June 15 all the interim orders passed by it or by district courts that were subsisting on or after May 15.

A full court Bench of the high court said there would be extension except in the matter where orders had been passed by the Supreme Court during the intervening period.

“In case, the extension of the interim order causes any hardship of an extreme nature to any party to such proceeding, they are at liberty to avail appropriate remedy as per law,” stated the Bench, headed by Chief Justice D.N. Patel.

Women, people in semi-urban areas bear the brunt of job losses

0

In what can be seen as a scary downside the nationwide lockdown, as much as 24.7 percent of the total population are either being laid off or are without work, according to the latest IANS-CVoter Economy Battery survey.

It’s the semi-urban areas that seem to have bore the brunt of job losses with 28.5 percent of the people living there getting laid off. When asked to people in job within their concerned households, that number swelled to 36.2 percent.

With more factories and industrial units located in the semi-urban zones, the effect of job losses is seen in full force there.

Meanwhile, 56.6 percent of the people have been negatively impacted one way or the other. Again, it’s the semi-urban areas that have taken the maximum hit of 58.3 percent.

As per the survey, women have lost more jobs as compared to their male counterparts. In terms of total population, 23.3 percent men and 26.3 percent women employees have been laid off.

When the question was put to people in job within their concerned households, the numbers swelled to 30.9 percent for men and 34.8 percent for women, as per the survey.

Quite predictably, the middle-aged strata are the worst hit by job losses. Among people in job within their concerned households, 40.7 percent between the age group of 45 and 60 years said that they have lost their jobs. The least affected are those above 60 years of age. Yet, 28.6 percent of them said they have lost their jobs.

In terms of earning strata, those who earn the least are the worst hit by job losses. India’s migrant crisis is a manifestation of these statistics. As much as 26.5 percent of the lowest income group lost their jobs, while the number for middle income and high-income groups are 23.1 percent and 22.5 percent, respectively.

When asked to people in job within their concerned households, that number swelled to 36.1 percent, 30.4 percent and 27.6 percent for low, middle and high-income groups, respectively.

Similarly, those with lower education levels have lost more jobs. As many as 27.6 percent of people with lower education got sacked, while 14.2 percent with higher education lost their jobs.

In terms of ethnic groups, 30.2 percent of Muslims have lost their jobs. The number goes up to 42.7 percent when the question is applicable to people in job within their concerned households.

Meanwhile, 18.0 percent of the total population has suffered salary cuts or loss of income in some way or the other. Both men and women are almost equally hit when it comes to salary cuts.

But what can be a silver lining in these dark times, 32.8 percent of the total population hasn’t experienced any income loss so far. When the question is applicable to people in job within their concerned households, that number goes up to 43.4 percent.

Screen COVID-19 patients for blood clotting abnormalities: Study

0

Saying that critically ill COVID-19 patients may be at high risk for developing renal failure, venous blood clots, and other complications associated with blood clots, such as stroke, researchers have emphasised on the need for early screening.

Thromboelastography (TEG) is a whole blood assay that provides a broad picture of how an individual patient’s blood forms clots, including how long clotting takes, how strong clots are, and how soon clots break down.

TEG is highly specialised and used primarily by surgeons and anesthesiologists to evaluate the efficiency of blood clotting; it is not widely used in other clinical settings.

“The COVID-19 pandemic is opening doors for multidisciplinary collaboration so trauma acute care surgeons and intensivists can bring the tools they use in their day-to-day lives and apply them in the critical care setting to new problems,” said Franklin Wright, Assistant Professor of Surgery at the University of Colorado School of Medicine in the US.

The researchers evaluated outcomes for all patients who had a TEG assay as part of their treatment for COVID-19 infection as well as other conventional coagulation assays, including ones that measure D-dimer levels.

D-dimer is a protein fragment that is produced when a blood clot dissolves. D-dimer levels are elevated when large numbers of clots are breaking down.

A total of 44 patients treated for COVID-19 infection between March 22 and April 20 were included in the analysis.

Those whose bodies were not breaking down clots most often required hemodialysis and had a higher rate of clots in the veins.

These patients were identified by TEG assays showing no clot breakdown after 30 minutes and a D-dimer level greater than 2600 ng/mL (nanograms per millilitre).

Eighty percent of patients with both affirmative test findings were placed on dialysis compared with 14 percent who tested for neither finding.

Patients with affirmative test findings also had a 50 percent rate of venous blood clots compared with zero percent for those patients with neither finding.

“These study results suggest there may be a benefit to early TEG testing in institutions that have the technology to identify COVID-19 patients who may need more aggressive anticoagulation therapy to prevent complications from clot formation,” Wright said.

Their research was published as an “article in press” on the Journal of the American College of Surgeons website ahead of print.

The research team is now participating in a randomized clinical trial of a drug that breaks down blood clots in COVID-19-infected patients.

“This is an early step on the road to discovering treatments to prevent some of the complications that come with this disease,” said Wright who is lead author of the research article.

Patients with COVID-19 infection are being enrolled in a randomized clinical trial of tissue plasminogen activator (tPA).

This drug is a natural anticoagulant that was approved by the US Food and Drug Administration in 1996 for the treatment of diseases associated with clotting disorders, such as heart attack, stroke, and pulmonary embolism.

The trial will assess the efficacy and safety of intravenous tPA in improving respiratory function and management of patients with aggressive blood clotting.

“This study suggests that testing whole blood clotting measurements may allow physicians to identify and treat patients with COVID-19 more effectively to prevent complications and encourage further research into therapies to prevent blood clots in these patients,” Wright said.

Kohli’s numbers in chases puts him ahead of Smith & Tendulkar, says Kevin Pietersen

0

Former England captain Kevin Pietersen said that he would pick Indian captain Virat Kohli over Australia’s Steve Smith or even batting great Sachin Tendulkar. In an Instagram live video chat with commentator and former Zimbabwe pacer Pommie Mbangwa, Pietersen said that Kohli gets his pick because of the number of times he manages to complete chases successfully.

“Kohli is a freakshow, his record chasing winning games for India with the amount of pressure he lives under, Smith does not even come close to him,” said Pietersen.

He said it is this factor that also puts Kohli above Tendulkar in his books.

“Again, Virat because of his chasing numbers. His chasing numbers are frightening, he averages more than 80 when it comes to chasing, he consistently wins games for India, he keeps on turning the numbers, and this matters to me as to how many games you win for your country,” Pietersen said.

Kohli’s extraordinary numbers in One Day Internationals, coupled with his tendency to register big totals while batting second, has led to many fans and commentators choosing the 31-year-old over Tendulkar.

While Tendulkar averaged 42.33 batting second, Kohli averages a mind numbing 68.33. 7039 of his 11,867 ODI runs have come batting second.

Smith, on the other hand, has superior numbers in Test cricket. However, he has not found as much individual success in his limited-overs career as Kohli has.

Ashwin share insights around his mental strength that came to his rescue to stay strong especially, when he was made to sit on the bench during the 2011 WC, or the 2013 Champions Trophy and his highly criticised performance during IPL.

A key moment that helped Ashwin stay mentally tough was when Sachin Tendulkar boosted his morale, Ashwin said, “Sachin came up to me and said, you’re bowling really well in the nets, bowl like this when you get your game as well.”

Another incident where Ashwin spirit was lifted when Dhoni gave him confidence during the Champions Trophy of 2013, “Dhoni came and told me in the first game of the CT 2013 that I was bowling fantastic even though I didn’t pick up a wicket.”

The episode on Sunday will also feature Raman, former Indian cricketer and the current coach of Indian women’s team.
