0

Playback singer Sona Mohapatra, who has crooned hit numbers such as ‘Bedardi Raja’, ‘Ambarsariya’ and ‘Rangabati’, has addressed a lengthy tweet to Parag Agrawal, CEO of the microblogging site, slamming the practice of not inviting women as headliners for cultural events at his alma mater IIT Bombay.

In her tweet, Sona wrote, “Dear @paraga, Ur alma-mater has for decades, mostly never hosted women as headliners in their cultural festival. IITB alumni, even CEOs slammed me on FB for writing this letter.”

Sona urged Agrawal to watch her film Shut Up Sona’ to get a glimpse of what female artists have to go through to get equal respect, representation, and remuneration.

She added: “I hope U watch my film #ShutUpSona to see what our reality as female artists in the 21st century is. Love & Light.” She also attached screenshots of her viral open letter on Facebook.

Kiara Advani plays the female lead opposite Ram Charan in ‘RC15’, which is being bankrolled by Dil Raju.

Actress abduction case: Memory card to be sent for scientific examination

0

The Kerala High Court on Tuesday directed the trial court to send for scientific examination the memory card containing crucial evidence in the 2017 actress abduction case in which actor Dileep is one of the accused.

The prosecution and the victim had expressed their deep dissatisfaction over reports that the hash value in the memory card, which was in possession of the trial court, had changed.

They had approached the trial court with a petition seeking to send it for scientific examination, but it was turned down, forcing them to approach the high court.

During the trial, even though the high court had pointed out that there has been a change in the hash value, none of the visuals pertaining to the victim was seen.

While the counsel for Dileep strongly opposed handing over the memory card for scientific examination, the counsels for the other two parties vehemently argued for it and the court agreed for the same this morning.

The court directed that in two days’ time, once this order comes out, the trial court should hand over the memory card to State Forensic Laboratory. In a week’s time it should submit a report in a sealed cover to the probe team which, in turn, should hand it over to the court, it added.

James Cameron planning to leave ‘Avatar’ franchise after third sequel

0

Filmmaker James Cameron, who is awaiting the release of his upcoming fantasy epic ‘Avatar: The Way of the Water’, has shared that he might stop directing the films in the franchise after the third sequel, reports Variety.

The director told ‘Empire’ magazine that he’s considering leaving the world of Pandora behind for other projects down the line and would pass on the baton to other deserving filmmakers in the process.

The first ‘Avatar sequel, subtitled ‘The Way of Water’, is set to hit theatres on December 16. A third film in the ‘Avatar’ series was shot back-to-back with ‘The Way of the Water’ and is eyeing a release in 2024.

Cameron told ‘Empire’ magazine, as quoted by ‘Variety’: “The ‘Avatar’ films themselves are kind of all-consuming. I’ve got some other things I’m developing as well that are exciting.

“I think eventually over time — I don’t know if that’s after three or after four — I’ll want to pass the baton to a director that I trust to take over, so I can go do some other stuff that I’m also interested in. Or maybe not. I don’t know.”

Even so, Cameron expressed excitement about the potential to watch his grand plan for the ‘Avatar saga come to fruition.

“Movie four is a corker. It’s a mo**********. I hope I get to make it. But it depends on market forces. Three is in the can so it’s coming out regardless. I hope that we get to make four and five because it’s one big story, ultimately.”

Cameron has stepped away from the director’s chair for projects that he has poured years into, starting with 2019’s ‘Alita: Battle Angel’, which was ultimately helmed by Robert Rodriguez, although he stayed attached to the production as an executive producer and co-writer.

Allu Arjun chills with family in Tanzania before ‘Pushpa’ sequel shoot

0

Before ‘Icon Star’ Allu Arjun gets busy with the shoot of the Sukumar-directed sequel of ‘Pushpa: The Rise’, which is scheduled to start in August or September, he is taking a break at the Serengeti National Park in Tanzania.

The actor’s wife, Allu Sneha, posted a family photo from the vacation on her Instagram page. In the photo, Allu Arjun is seen having a good time with his wife and children — son Allu Ayan and daughter Allu Arha. The image featuring the Allu family has gone viral on social media.

The scripting for the sequel, ‘Pushpa: The Rule’, is said to have been completed and Allu Arjun is expected to return to Hyderabad sometime soon to start preparing for the shoot.

In ‘Pushpa: The Rise’, Allu Arjun plays an underdog who becomes the boss of a sandalwood smuggling syndicate. The sequel will see him being the boss, taking on the powers that be, including his bete noir, the cop played by Fahad Faasil.

Rashmika Mandanna, who plays Pushpa’s love interest, Srivalli, will have a bigger role in the sequel, according to the makers. There’s much speculation, meanwhile, over Tamil star, Vijay Sethupathi, fresh from his dream run in Kamal Haasan’s ‘Vikram’, joining the cast, but the makers of Pushpa are not saying anything about it.

‘Withdraw provocative material’: Indian High Commission in Canada on ‘Kaali’ poster

0

The Indian High Commission in Canada, following a controversy over a poster of a documentary ‘Kaali’ that was showcased at Aga Khan Museum in Toronto, has urged the organizers to withdraw all provocative material.

In a statement, the High Commission said that they have received complaints from leaders of the Hindu community in Canada about the “disrespectful depiction of Hindu Gods on the poster of a film showcased as part of the ‘Under the Tent’ project at the Aga Khan Museum, Toronto.”

“Our Consulate General in Toronto has conveyed these concerns to the organizers of the event,” read the statement.

“We are also informed that several Hindu groups have approached authorities in Canada to take action. We urge the Canadian authorities and the event organizers to withdraw all such provocative material,” it added.

The controversy erupted after filmmaker Leena Manimekalai shared the poster of the film on social media that depicts a woman dressed as Goddess Kaali smoking a cigarette in the poster.

Young Wellalage added to Sri Lanka Test squad after another Covid-19 case in side

0

Ahead of the second Test between Sri Lanka and Australia at the Galle International Stadium on July 8, the home team has suffered a setback with backup left-arm spinner Praveen Jayawickrama being ruled out after testing positive for Covid-19.

This is the team’s second case in five days after Angelo Mathews had to be replaced during the series opener after also returning a positive test.

In a series of tweets on Tuesday, Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) said, “Praveen Jayawickrama has tested positive for Covid-19. The player was found to be Covid positive when he was tested (Rapid Antigen Test) this morning, as he complained of feeling ‘Unwell’.”

It added, “Jayawickrama was immediately isolated from the rest of the team members and now will remain in room isolation for five days. Upon identification of Jayawickrama, the rest of the team members were subjected to a Rapid Antigen Test. All of them returned negative results.”

Jayawickrama’s isolation means the hosts will have to make changes to their spin attack for the second and final Test after they lost the opening match by 10 wickets at the same venue. It could pave the way for Sri Lanka to field one of their youngest ever Test debutants — Dunith Wellalage.

Wellalage, the Under-19 World Cup skipper from earlier this year, could come into the Test side after he troubled the Australians during his maiden ODI campaign last month, according to cricket.com.au.

The 19-year-old was kept on standby for the first Test but has now been added to the squad along with two more uncapped spinners, Mahesh Theekshanna and Lakshitha Ranasinghe.

“Team Updates: Mahesh Theekshana, Lakshitha Manasinghe, and Dunith Wellalage have been drafted into the Test squad. They joined the team yesterday (July 4). Lasith Embuldeniya was released from the squad,” said SLC.

Left-arm spinner Embuldeniya has been released following an unimpressive first-Test outing, where he emerged as the only spinner from either side not to take a wicket on a rank turner while also conceding nearly five runs per over.

Sri Lanka coach Chris Silverwood was quoted as saying, “He’s (Embuldeniya) finding it tough at the moment. He’s getting a lot of support in the dressing room because he’s a great lad. If you look at the data that gets thrown back, you’ve got Nathan Lyon (pitching the ball) between 4.5 and 4.4 meters (from the stumps) and Embuldeniya was a good foot-and-a-half fuller than that on the first day, which made life easier for the Australian batsman.

“We’ve got to work on him holding a consistent length. It’s not just him not holding a consistent length. As a group, we need to do that better. You look at the various pace the bowler’s bowl at as well. There are a few factors there, one of which is confidence. We’ve got to give him support and get him back to where we know he can be. He’s trying hard. It’s just not happening for him at the moment,” added Silverwood.

NZC announces landmark agreement of equal pay for men and women cricketers

0

New Zealand Cricket (NZC) on Tuesday announced a ground-breaking agreement, which will see the country’s professional women’s and men’s cricketers receive the same pay for the same work on the same day.

The five-year landmark agreement struck between NZC, the six Major Associations, and the New Zealand Cricket Players Association (NZCPA), will see the White Ferns and domestic women’s players receiving the same match fees as the men across all their formats and competitions.

This is the first deal in which the men’s and women’s professional environments have been combined in one agreement, said NZC in a statement.

NZC, the NZCPA, and the six Major Associations worked towards a pay equity framework with the advice of Australian gender pay expert Yolanda Beattie, whose expertise was sought by NZCPA.

The improved pay and conditions are part of an agreement calculated on the country’s men’s and women’s professional players receiving 29.75 percent of all NZC forecast revenue over five years (NZD 349m), expected to amount to NZD 104m.

“Translated, this means the highest-ranked White Fern would be able to receive a maximum of NZD 163,246 a year (up from NZD 83,432), the ninth-ranked, NZD 148,946 (NZD 66,266), and the 17th-ranked NZD 142,346 (NZD 62,833),” said NZC.

“The top-ranked women’s domestic players in each Major Association would be able to receive a maximum of NZD 19,146 (up from NZD 3,423), the sixth-ranked NZD 18,646 (NZD 3,423), and the 12th-ranked NZD 18,146 (NZD 3,423).”

The agreement sees the total number of women’s domestic contracts increase from 54 to 72, all positioned as a secondary work commitment with restricted obligations, to enable players to retain full-time employment and/or study commitments.

In addition, the number of domestic women’s annual contracts will be increased from nine to 12 per team, and an annual women’s North v South series for emerging international players will be introduced, complementing the existing development programs.

New Zealand’s professional men’s players, whose match fees at T20I, ODI, Ford Trophy, and Dream11 Super Smash level will be the same as the women, will earn higher retainers, based on the increased number of matches played, formats contested, and time spent training and playing.

“They have also received increases on current levels, the top-ranked Black Cap able to receive a maximum of NZD 523,396 (up from NZD 459,574), the 10th-ranked NZD 444,196 (NZD 377,981), and the 20th-ranked NZD 367,196 (NZD 305,453),” said the statement.

Additionally, the highest-ranked domestic men’s player in each Major Association would be in line to receive a maximum of NZD 102,707 (up from NZD 94,437), the eighth-ranked NZD 87,307 (NZD 77,357), and the 16th-ranked NZD 75,207 (NZD 64,406).

The total remuneration for men’s and women’s professional players includes retainers, match fees, Trust IP payments, retirement fund contributions, and insurance.

They will retain their ability to play in overseas leagues, including the IPL. Another significant enhancement of the new Master Agreement will be a bigger funding envelope for the NZCPA’s support services, allowing it to increase investment in, amongst other areas, its ‘Personal Development Programme’, particularly in terms of ensuring women’s domestic players are offered the same level of support as the domestic men, Black Caps, and White Ferns.

The agreement, to commence on August 1, also seeks to ensure professional women’s players receive equity in matters such as travel and accommodation, and the wider playing and training environment. It retains the pregnancy and childcare provisions contained in the existing agreements.

White Ferns captain Sophie Devine said the agreement was a game-changer for women’s cricket. “It’s great for the international and domestic women players to be recognized in the same agreement, alongside the men. It’s a massive step forward and will be a huge drawcard for young women and girls.”

New Zealand men’s team skipper Kane Williamson said it was an exciting time for the sport. “It’s really important for the current players to build on the legacy of those who have gone before us, and to support tomorrow’s players, both men, and women, at all levels. This agreement goes a long way towards achieving that.”

‘We are just very optimistic’: England opener Alex Lees

0

Alex Lees, the England opener who was run out after scoring 56 in England’s second innings run chase, told a post-play media conference on the 4th day: “If we bat well for the first 30-40 minutes tomorrow (Tuesday) morning we should be in a pretty strong position (to win the match). We are just very optimistic.”

He said: “(Ben) Stokes’ spell turned the game on its head. The (England) bowling this morning was the biggest turning point.” The England captain and all-rounder Stokes captured four wickets for 33 runs in a spell replete with short-pitched bowlers, which fetched dividends for the home side as Indian batsmen obliged with injudicious hooks.

Speaking about the spirit in the England dressing room before the start of their second innings, Lees remarked: “There is the ultimate belief that from one to 11 that we can do it.’ He added: ‘My role was to put some pressure on the Indian bowlers.”

India fielded batting coach Vikram Rathour to meet the media.

He stated: “We had a pretty ordinary day with our batting. We could not convert starts.”

He went on to say: “If two wickets fall early tomorrow morning, the game can still open up. It’s not beyond (Mohammed) Shami and (Jasprit) Bumrah.” However, he admitted: “We needed to bowl better, in better areas; a couple of dropped catches also made a difference.”

About Cheteshwar Pujara, who made a half-century before departing to an uncharacteristic uppish square cut, he felt he “gave his best”.

On a dramatic day, India slipped from a dominant position to danger of losing the test. They were bowled out for 245 in their second innings. Thereafter, England was at 259 for three, with Joe Root and Jonny Bairstow unbeaten on 76 and 72 respectively, chasing 378 to win.

Wimbledon 2022: Halep shocks Badosa, to meet Anisimova in quarters

0

Former champion Simona Halep stunned No 4 seed Paula Badosa to storm into the women’s singles quarterfinals at Wimbledon on Monday.

Halep rolled past Badosa in a fourth-round match, losing only three games in the process and dominating her Spanish opponent from start to finish in a 6-1, 6-2 triumph at the Centre Court.

Halep will face No.20 seed, Amanda Anisimova, in the quarterfinals.

It was Halep’s second emphatic result against Badosa this year; at the Mutua Madrid Open in May, Halep lost just four games against the then-No.2 seed on her home turf in a 6-3, 6-1 Round 2 victory.

The first match between two Top 20 seeds at this Championships went squarely in favor of the former World No.1 Halep broke Badosa’s serve five times in just 59 minutes on court, never lost her own, and hit 17 winners to just nine unforced errors.

Badosa, playing another match on Centre Court after dispatching two-time former champion Petra Kvitova in Round 3, by contrast, never got going; she hit 20 unforced errors to just seven winners.

Though it was her first match on Centre Court in more than 1,000 days, Halep was back on the hallowed lawns on Sunday to celebrate the court’s 100th anniversary, standing shoulder-to-shoulder with other great champions.

Meanwhile, 20th seed Anisimova powered past France’s Harmony Tan 6-2, 6-3 to book a place in her first quarterfinal at Wimbledon and first major quarterfinal since her run to the 2019 Roland Garros semifinals, said a report on the WTA Tour website.

The last American woman in the draw, Anisimova is now an impressive 29-9 on the season, the fourth-best record on the Hologic WTA Tour behind Iga Swiatek, Ons Jabeur, and Simona Halep. She backed up her tough three-set win over French Open finalist Coco Gauff by playing disciplined, powerful tennis to keep Tan at bay.

Before this year, Wimbledon was the only Slam at which Anisimova had yet to reach the third round. Her best result was a second-round showing in 2019.

“Going into this I didn’t think this was possible,” Anisimova said. “It’s a dream come true right now,” she said.

Anisimova enjoyed her breakout run at a major at the 2019 French Open. Then 17, Anisimova notched wins over Tan and Halep en route to her first major semifinal.

‘Vikram Vedha’ makers clear the air on film’s shoot locations

0

After a media report claimed that the shooting location of the upcoming neo-noir action thriller, ‘Vikram Vedha’, was changed from Uttar Pradesh to Dubai at the behest of Hrithik Roshan, the makers of the film have issued a clarification.

They said that only a small portion of the film was shot in the UAE back in October-November of 2021 as it was the only location that provided the infrastructure for a bio-bubble for a film of such a big scale.

Reliance Entertainment, which has bankrolled the project, said in a statement, “We have been noticing a lot of misleading and unsubstantiated reporting on ‘Vikram Vedha’ shooting locations. We want to state that Vikram Vedha has been shot extensively in India, including Lucknow.”

The statement added: “A portion of the film was shot in the United Arab Emirates in October-November of 2021 since it was the only location providing the infrastructure for a bio-bubble that accommodated a crew of such scale, also allowing the building of sets in a studio during the preceding months of the shoot.

“We chose to do that out of health and protocol concerns. Any attempt to twist these sets of facts is mischievous and untruthful.”

‘Vikram Vedha’, which is based on the Indian folktale, ‘Vikram aur Betal’, tells the story of a tough police officer who sets out to track down and hunt a menacing gangster. The film stars Hrithik Roshan and Saif Ali Khan playing the leads with Radhika Apte in a prominent role.

The makers further mentioned in their statement, “Also we would like to emphatically state that at Reliance Entertainment while we welcome suggestions from creative talent, the production, and budgetary decisions are a centralized prerogative.”

‘Vikram Vedha’, which commenced filming in October 2021, is presented by Gulshan Kumar, T-Series Films, and Reliance Entertainment in association with Friday Filmworks and YNOT Studios.

The film is directed by Pushkar and Gayatri and produced by S. Sashikanth and Bhushan Kumar. The film, which additionally stars Rohit Saraf, Yogita Bihani, Sharib Hashmi, and Satyadeep Mishra, is set to have a worldwide theatrical release on September 30, 2022.
