Sri Lanka all-rounder Angelo Mathews tests Covid-positive; Fernando comes in as a replacement

0

Sri Lanka star cricketer Angelo Mathews has tested positive for Covid-19 ahead of the third day’s play of the opening Test against Australia at the Galle International Stadium here on Friday.

The 35-year-old Mathews, who scored 39 in Sri Lanka’s first innings total of 212, has been replaced by Oshada Fernando, who has come in as an “approved like-for-like Covid replacement”.

The all-rounder reportedly informed the Sri Lanka camp about Covid-19 symptoms on Friday morning and was isolated as per protocols.

Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) confirmed the news on Twitter, saying, “Angelo Mathews tested positive for Covid-19. He was found to be positive during a Rapid Anti-Gen Test Conducted on the player. The test was done, as the player was feeling unwell. He has been isolated from the rest of the team members and is following covid-19 protocols.”

Oshada Fernando will likely be in the thick of the action during the early stages of day three after his teammates bowled Australia out for 321 early in the morning session on Friday.

The hosts were 109 runs behind at the end of Australia’s first innings with Asitha Fernando cleaning up the tail after Ramesh Mendis’ 112/4.

With the second Test beginning on July 8, Mathews’ future involvement in the series remains unclear.

CLOSE-IN: Indian cricket at present is in a maze

0

The successful completion of the Indian Premier League (IPL) and the selling of the media rights for it is the news that Indian cricket is celebrating. The most important aspect of any venture is the financials, and the BCCI, one feels, is comfortable with it.

The Indian domestic season ended with the completion of the Ranji Trophy. Madhya Pradesh winning it with not a single international player in its midst is a remarkable story. One has to give kudos to each of the playing members of the side, especially, in the way they showcased teamwork and togetherness.

One has to admire the coaching skills of Chandrakant Pandit, who has with this win etched himself as the best-ever cricket performance coach in India.

Indian cricket may look like it is sailing through calm waters as a cricket establishment. However, one gets the feeling that cricket on the field is in a maze. There seems to be plenty of uncertainty as regards to the players and now with the captain as well.

India will be playing an important Test match at Edgbaston in Birmingham today. With a 2-1 lead in the series, India may be in the driver’s seat with nothing major to lose. However, a victory against England for all Indians is always a special occasion. Completing a pending series eight and a half months since the last Test match of that series is in itself an amusing story.

India and England in the meantime have both changed their captains and their coaches. The momentum that India had gained and established mentally as a superior unit may no longer hold. A one-Test encounter in a foreign land is never the right approach and India has suffered from this in the past.

The inaugural World Test Championship, when India played New Zealand, the latter having played a few matches before, was a prime example of a team not acclimatized for the big occasion.

The Indian Test team seems to be in the same predicament at present. They have landed after playing two months of T20 cricket into playing the truly traditional and conventional form of the game. Test cricket requires one to be patient and draws one into a mental state that is far different from the glamorous hit-or-miss variety of the T20. India is also in a flap as regards captaincy.

Jasprit Bumrah has been named captain because of the unavailability of Rohit Sharma. The ideal solution would have been to request Virat Kohli to lead. Bumrah is the leading force for India as a bowler. However, captaincy could become a burdensome issue for him. Furthermore, he has not even captained the First-class side before and, therefore, putting this additional responsibility on his shoulder would not be fair to him.

God and lady luck need to shine on India, as without KL Rahul, Rohit Sharma and the lack of confidence in their batters in Cheteshwar Pujara, Virat Kohli, Rishabh Pant, and Shreyas Iyer, the blessings of the almighty are all that Indian fans must be praying for.

The England side looks confident and cocky having won the series 3-0 against New Zealand. Their new aggressive approach has been a revelation in the way in which they bat. One admires it when it all comes out right but cricket history has shown that it could come to bite you as well.

India has the bowling arsenal to demolish England’s belief.

Rahul Dravid has a major issue and that is to select the ideal and best eleven for the Test match. Apart from Virat Kohli, not a single spot in the batting order is in order. India possesses both pace and good spin-bowling options. The English weather tempts one to go in with an extra pacer but for India to leave out R. Ashwin would be a folly. However, the most concerning part would be Bumrah as a captain and as to how he marshals the side.

India, on the other hand, has its eyes focused on the T20 World Cup at the end of this year. Australia is the venue and identifying the players for it would be a challenge. The reason is that the IPL throws out players who have performed well in it and they seem to be favored in the selection of the national side as well. This has led to a huge pool of players, all showcasing similar skills amongst them. Along with the regular established players, identifying the best from the rest is going to be a difficult task.

One feels India is over-extending itself by playing two series at one time. An Indian cap has become an everyday affair. A good performance in the IPL and one is a part of one of the Indian sides, if not in the senior side, then at least in one of the limited-overs one. None of the other countries send two teams to play two different series. One wonders whether the Indian players will be fresh enough to play the T20 World Cup, given the schedule of matches that they will be playing before it.

Giving a cricketer a well-deserved break is not the answer. A team needs to have continuity and camaraderie to understand one another. This comes from playing as many matches together and spending quality time with one another, away from the ground. The Indian team needs to confine itself to a camp where strategies and plans are discussed and decided.

This is where India failed earlier and has, therefore, not won an ICC Trophy since 2014. One hopes Dravid changes it or else we will once again ask “WHY”.

Stockholm Diamond League: Neeraj Chopra breaks national record with a throw of 89.94m

0

Continuing his brilliant form, Olympic champion Neeraj Chopra broke the national record again with a throw of 89.94m to finish second in the Stockholm Diamond League 2022 in Sweden on Thursday.

The Indian javelin ace fell just six centimeters short of the elusive 90m mark but he bettered his personal best of 89.30m, set earlier this month at the Paavo Nurmi Games in Finland.

World champion Anderson Peters of Grenada broke the 16-year-old meet record with a huge 90.31m throw in his third attempt, which was enough to get him the top spot. World No 4 Julian Weber of Germany finished third with an effort of 89.08m. Jakub Vadlejch, the 2016 Diamond League champion, was fourth after Julian pipped him with his penultimate throw.

After the record-breaking first throw, Chopra logged 84.37m, 87.46m, 84.77m and 86.67m in his subsequent attempts and was one of the top three athletes who made it to the sixth attempt. However, the 24-year-old Indian could only come up with 86.84m in his final throw and finished behind Anderson Peters.

“Today, I feel good and after the first throw, I thought I could throw even over the 90m today. But it is OK as I have more competitions coming this year. I am close to 90m now and I can throw it this year,” said Chopra.

“Despite the fact that I did not win tonight, I feel very good because I did my best,” he added.

This was Chopra’s eighth appearance in the Diamond League and his first top-three finish at the meet. He earned seven points for the second-place finish in Stockholm and moved to fourth in the qualification standings of the Diamond League. The top six athletes at the end of all qualification meetings will compete at the Diamond League Final in Zurich this September.

Earlier this month, Chopra had made an impressive return to competition after Tokyo 2020, breaking the national record with an 89.30m throw to clinch the silver at Paavo Nurmi Games before claiming gold at the Kuortane Games with an 86.69m throw.

The Stockholm Diamond League was his last event before the World Athletics Championships and the Commonwealth Games in July.

Instagram confirms it is working to turn video posts into Reels

0

Meta-owned photo-sharing platform Instagram has confirmed that it is testing a change that turns video posts into Reels.

According to TechCrunch, the company said the change, which is currently being tested with select users around the world, is part of Instagram’s plan to simplify video on the app.

“We are testing this feature as part of our efforts to simplify and improve the video experience on Instagram,” a spokesperson from Meta was quoted as saying in an email.

A screenshot posted on Twitter by social media consultant Matt Navarra showed that people who are part of the test will see an in-app message that says “video posts are now shared as Reels”.

The message indicates that if your account is public and you post a video that ends up being turned into a Reel, anyone can discover your Reel and use your original audio to create their Reel, the report said.

If your account is set to private, your Reel will only be visible to your followers, it added.

The message also noted that once you post a Reel, anyone can create a remix with your Reel if your account is public. However, you can prevent people from remixing your Reels in your account settings.

Elon Musk is on his longest-ever Twitter break amid challenges

0

It has been nine days since Tesla and SpaceX CEO Elon Musk took digital detox from Twitter — the longest stretch without posting anything in nearly five years — leaving his more than 100 million followers and the media speculating a lot.

His silence comes in the middle of the controversial $44 billion deal to buy Twitter that he has put on hold till CEO Parag Agrawal informs him of the exact number of bots and spam accounts on the platform.

Musk, a serial Tweeter, last posted on June 22 on the battle between SpaceX and the US Federal Communications Commission (FCC) over broadband usage.

“Their attempt to bait and switch satellite spectrum for cellular spectrum is super shady and unethical. If they are successful, it would hurt the least served and completely unserved of the world. Very messed up,” he had tweeted before going into a hiatus.

He has taken, at most, a four-day break from Twitter but this time, the nine-day long break has created utter suspense in the minds of millions.

Last year, he tweeted, “Off Twitter for a while.” He resumed tweeting a day later.

So notable is Elon Musk’s presence that his tweeting habits have become a staple of Tesla and SpaceX news, reports Teslarati.

“Musk tends to post updates and insights about his company s products and projects on Twitter, and many of them are newsworthy. Musk’s off-the-cuff comments and rants are also baited for controversial news articles,” the report mentioned.

His silence comes at a time when Tesla ended the second quarter after several challenging days in China amid Covid-lockdowns, and SpaceX is currently busy with its ambitious Starship program.

Musk, touted to be the most successful tech entrepreneur and investor in the world, turned 51 last week and his fans and followers poured birthday wishes for him on the microblogging site.

The police have arrested a woman and her lover for allegedly killing her aunt and cousin as she was unable to repay a loan of Rs 4 lakh taken from them, officials said on Friday.

The bodies of 40-year-old Mala and her 18-year-old son Vinay were found floating in the Gangnahar canal around three months ago.

The two were killed by drowning by the accused — Neha and Yogesh — and their two accomplices, who are missing.

Mala, who was a widow, lived with her mother and son. Neha had taken the loan almost a year ago.

On March 25, the accused took Mala and Vinay to a hotel on the pretext of returning the loan. However, the woman and her son were pushed into the canal one by one leading to their deaths due to underwater asphyxiation.

While the mother was killed in the Raya area, her son was thrown in the canal near the Mant area, around 12 km away.

“Neha and Yogesh took the help of one Imran and Rakesh in the murder. Our teams are trying to arrest them,” said the officer.
