Cabin crew say AI compulsory leave is layoffs through backdoor

0

The cabin crew of Air India has told the management that the compulsory leave scheme is a smokescreen for retrenchment by the backdoor and has demanded that it be kept in abeyance.

The All India Cabin Crew Association in a letter to Air India management said that AICCA records its strong protest at this circular and fears that this compulsory leave scheme is a smokescreen for a retrenchment/layoff scheme by the back door and is in gross violation of various Supreme Court orders, including the Constitutional bench judgment on Section 25, and infringes on the Air India SC case on hand.

“We note with great concern that the said circular purports to send employees on Compulsory Leave without Pay, by the CMD, as recommended by the RD & regional officials. This is highly arbitrary & subjective and is a violation of the Certified Standing Orders (Amended) of erstwhile Air India, as applicable to us,” the cabin crew members said.

“Respectfully, we must also note that the circular & the board resolution itself are illegal as they violate the CSO, 9A of the ID Act, and most importantly infringe on a matter that is being heard by the Hon Supreme Court of India, where we are a party. The larger bench of the Apex court is hearing the matter of Service Conditions, Standing Orders & 9A, and this circular violates that and brings in alien concepts of redundancies, merely to skirt existing retrenchment laws,” the letter said.

“We find it shocking that our Airline seeks to arbitrarily retrench the very Corona Warriors who have been flying Vande Bharat Missions, at great risk to themselves and many have contracted COVID,” the association said and has asked Air India CMD to keep the said circular in abeyance and engage in constructive dialogue with the AICCA on this subject.

Bhumi: I am ok with any platform as vehicle of my creative expression

Bhumi Pednekar’s upcoming film “Dolly Kitty Aur Woh Chamakte Sitaare” is heading for a digital release. The actress welcomes the decision and says she is okay with any platform being the vehicle of her creative expression.

“As an artist, I only look to entertain the audience every time I am on the screen and I am okay with any platform becoming the vehicle of my creative expression. In this day and age, producers will do what is needed and we must all support each other’s decisions,” Bhumi said.

She said that she feels her upcoming film will reach out to a much larger audience with the decision to release it on an OTT platform.

Directed by Alankrita Shrivastava, “Dolly Kitty Aur Woh Chamakte Sitare” also stars Konkona Sen Sharma.

Bhumi is a huge fan of Konkona’s brilliance and Alankrita’s sensitivity.

” ‘Dolly Kitty…’ is a very special film. Konkona as we know is a phenomenal person and actor, and Alankrita (Srivastava) is a very special director. (Producers) Balaji (Motion Pictures) as an institution has always supported content that has broken barriers. A very big reason why I am this fond of Ekta (Kapoor). So, for me, being a part of this film was a super enriching experience as an actor,” she said.

“I have adored Konkona’s work and it was simply mesmerising for me to see her perform. Our scenes together in the film are exciting and memorable. Alankrita is a very powerful voice in cinema today, she is strong, witty and humane. I’m fortunate that I got the opportunity to creatively collaborate with her. I have learnt a lot from her,” Bhumi said.

The actress is hopeful that audiences worldwide will embrace this powerful film.

“Our film has been winning laurels at international film festivals. We’ve garnered such love and respect. I won awards at international platforms for the film and I’m sure it will be liked by audiences here as well. I’m looking forward to seeing how people react. It was refreshing to play a girl, fresh out of college, waiting to experience life.

Describing her character Kitty as “naive, sweet, ambitious and a survivor”, she added: “The film is full of quirk and a pool of emotions. It has a different narrative and I am excited,” she says.

Bhumi added that the film “celebrates womanhood, sisterhood and all the drama that comes in between with love and work”.

“It very skilfully shows just how complex yet beautiful women are,” she said.

Arjun Kanungo: Not sure if I’m going to survive in music industry for next 3 years

Arjun Kanungo is one of the most successful non-film singers right now. It took him a few years to get noticed but he says there is no survival trick, and despite all the success he is unsure if he is going to survive in the music industry for the next three years or not.

Arjun has been in the music industry for over a decade, but it was the 2015 song “Baaki baatein peene baad (Shots)” that changed his fortunes. The song became a party essential. He followed it up with many romantic numbers, peppy tracks, and more.

It wasn’t easy for him to break into the industry but he believes that it’s not impossible for outsiders to make it big.

“I came from outside, I made it on my own, I feel that you have to keep on trying, keep working, and you need to have a positive attitude about it. If you feel like you are not going to make it, you are not going to make it. You have to keep trying and one day somebody will give you a shot, and you have to be ready. So you have to keep working towards that and hope for the best because there is no plan B in this industry. For me, I wake up in the morning, I breathe music,” Arjun told IANS.

He said he didn’t have anybody creating roadblocks in his career.

“I don’t have any enemies as such. I feel if you are nice to people, they are nice to you. As an outsider, yes it was hard, I worked very hard to be where I am right now. I have been in the music industry for a little more than 10 years. It took me about five or six years to just get noticed. That’s the kind of timeline that you have to come to the industry with, like you have to have that passion, ‘Okay I want to do this so badly that I am willing to work for five years or seven years to be there. There are no shortcuts,” said the “Gallan tipsiyaan” singer.

As for survival, he feels there are no tricks to survive in the industry.

“You have to be genuinely deserving to be here. You have to love what you do, you have to be passionate and humble. I am not sure if I am going to survive for the next three years, I don’t know if I am going to be an artist who survives Bollywood or the non-film world for even three years. I don’t know what’s going to happen tomorrow,” he said.

But what he can do is give it his 100 percent. “I am going to try to get better every day. I hope that people understand this when they enter Bollywood. They have to give their 100 percent,” said the singer, who has sung for Bollywood films like “Goa Goa Gone”.

As of now, his new song “Fursat hai Aaj Bhi” is fast gaining popularity. The video of the song features Arjun with actress Sonal Chauhan. The two had also featured in his 2016 video, “Fursat”.

“I have always had a special place in my heart for ‘Fursat’. As a music video, it was game-changing for me and my career. I have always wanted to work with Sonal again. When I wrote ‘Fursat hai aaj bhi’, with ‘first’ in the title, even though it had nothing to do with the previous song, I thought of Sonal and I felt we should work together again — especially since the chemistry in the first video was so good. I felt this was a good time to work with her again,” said Arjun.

Shooting for the music video during lockdown was tough. Explaining the process of working on the video, he said: “We shot the video from our own houses during the lockdown. The director of the video was on call throughout the shoot. He was telling us to change the camera angle, etc, so it was quite interesting to shoot like that. You are so used to having a crew, someone to do hair and makeup, camera and lighting, and this time there were no additional people helping us. On the last day, we shot together — me and Sonal. That was easier because the director was around. He was holding the phone. We shot the entire thing on the phone.”

During the lockdown, many singers released new music. Now that people are adjusting to new normal and returning to work gradually, is he willing to hit the stage again?

“I can’t imagine having a stage show at least till November. Our first inquiries are for November and December. Who knows when the government is going to allow it? I haven’t received any offer before November,” he said.

He is in no rush. “I don’t think it’s responsible to go and perform right now. We don’t know how badly coronavirus is going to affect India. Until I know for sure that people coming to my concert are safe, I don’t think I’ll be comfortable in performing,” said Arjun.

Bombay HC serves notice again to Twitter on PIL

0

Twitter India has been served notice once again by the Bombay High Court as it failed to submit its reply in the stipulated three weeks given by the High Court.

The notice has been issued on public interest litigation (PIL) filed against Twitter India Pvt. Ltd. and others by the petitioner, Gopal Jhaveri before the High Court at Bombay with the prayer to direct the National Investigation Agency (NIA) to take action against Twitter under various penal provisions of the law.

These include Section 39 the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act, 1967; Section 107, 121 A, 124A, 153A, 153 B, 34 of the Indian Penal Code, section 66f of the Information Technology Act, 2000.

The petitioner also demanded the regulation of social media platforms to tackle various anti-national and unethical activities on Twitter.

According to the petition, Twitter accepted blood money to promote Khalistan supporting tweets and is still promoting it knowingly. It is a well-known fact that the Khalistan is a banned terror organization even though they have blindly supported terror organizations to promote anti-national agenda and therefore the authorized representative and all the persons involved in this activity shall be punished by Indian judiciary to set an example to those who are still having a goal to divide India and actively supporting banned terror organizations.

The Chief justice of High Court at Bombay in his order dated June 5, 2020, directed Twitter and their advocate to file their reply within three weeks, the reply is pending till today.

The petition argues that the inquiry may be initiated by the National Investigation Agency, for fair, proper and speedy investigation as many of the users who promote massages in related to #Khalistan are from outside India and therefore shall be investigated by the National Investigation Agency.

It seeks an order or direction against the respondents thereby commanding them to make a mechanism to check contents and advertisements which are spreading hatred amongst the communities, seditious, instigative, separatist, hate-filled, divisive, against the society at large and against the spirit of Union of India.

The petitioner came to know that Member of Parliament Anant Kumar Hegde made a statement about the support of Twitter in anti-national agenda.

The Petitioner further says that after enquiring about the issues, the Petitioner came to know that the Twitter server was used for the promotion of #Khalistan, still, there are many users who are having their user name as Khalistan or similar to Khalistan just to promote ati national activity, the screen snapshot of various users who are promoting this anti-National agenda is attache.

Another tweet was done by Twitter user with the name mentioned as Gurpatwant Singh Pannun through his Twitter handle @GPannun.

ED questions Cong leader Pawan Bansal in railway bribery case

0

In more troubles for former Railway Minister and senior Congress leader Pawan Kumar Bansal, the Enforcement Directorate (ED) has questioned him in connection with the railway bribery case involving his nephew.

The ED had initiated an investigation under the provisions of PMLA on the basis of the FIR and charge sheet filed by CBI against Mahesh Kumar Member (Staff), Railway Board, Vijay Singla, Sandeep Goyal and seven other accused.

A top ED source told IANS: “Bansal was questioned by the agency on Wednesday for 8 hours at its Chandigarh office on Wednesday.”

The source further said that the agency will question him once again in the coming days.

In May last year, the ED had attached the Rs 89 lakh amount which the CBI seized from the office of Bansal’s nephew Vinay Singla in 2013 in a corruption case related to appointments at top positions in the railways when the Congress leader was the Union Railway Minister in the United Progressive Alliance-2 regime.

Bansal had to step down from the post after the controversy.

On the basis of the CBI FIR, the ED had filed a money laundering case against then Railway Board Member (Staff) Mahesh Kumar, Vijay Singla, one Sandeep Goyal and seven others.

“Singla demanded Rs10 crore through Sandeep Goyal from N Manjunath to get Mahesh Kumar posted as Member (Electrical),” the ED had said, quoting the CBI probe.

Twitter hack: FBI investigates attack

0

The FBI has launched an investigation after hackers hijacked Twitter accounts of a number of high-profile US figures in an apparent Bitcoin scam.

“The accounts appear to have been compromised in order to perpetuate cryptocurrency fraud,” said the bureau, urging the public to be vigilant, the BBC reported on Thursday.

Elon Musk, Bill Gates, and Joe Biden were among those hit in what Twitter said was a “coordinated” attack.

Their official accounts requested donations in the cryptocurrency.

“Everyone is asking me to give back,” said a tweet from the account of Mr Gates, the Microsoft founder. “You send $1,000, I send you back $2,000.”

The US Senate Commerce Committee has demanded Twitter brief it about Wednesday’s incident by July 23.

Twitter said the hackers had targeted its employees “with access to internal systems and tools”.

“We know they [the hackers] used this access to take control of many highly-visible (including verified) accounts and Tweet on their behalf,” the company said in a series of tweets.

It added that “significant steps” had been taken to limit access to such internal systems and tools while the company’s investigation continues.

The tech firm has also blocked users from being able to tweet Bitcoin wallet addresses for the time being.

The UK’s National Cyber Security Centre said its officers had “reached out” to the tech firm. “We would urge people to treat requests for money or sensitive information on social media with extreme caution,” it said in a statement.

US politicians also have questions. Republican Senator Josh Hawley has written to the company asking if President Donald Trump’s account had been vulnerable.

Trump’s account was not compromised, the White House said.

The chair of the Senate Commerce Committee has also been in contact with Twitter.

“It cannot be overstated how troubling this incident is, both in its effects and in the apparent failure of Twitter’s internal controls to prevent it,” Senator Roger Wicker wrote to the firm.

One cyber-security expert said that the breach could have been a lot worse in other circumstances.

“If you were to have this kind of incident take place in the middle of a crisis, where Twitter was being used to either communicate de-escalatory language or critical information to the public and suddenly it’s putting out the wrong messages from several verified status accounts – that could be seriously destabilizing,” Alexi Drew from King’s College London told the BBC.

MLAs supporting him took the Congress to court today

0

Sachin Pilot and 18 MLAs supporting him took the Congress to court today over its move to disqualify them, arguing that disagreements between elected representatives and the party cannot be construed as anti-party activity and skipping two meetings is not ground for disqualification.

The hearing at the Rajasthan High Court, however, got deferred today as the petitioners asked for a two-judge bench. Te matter has now been referred to a two-judge bench.

Usually, matters related to constitutional law is heard by a two-judge bench. But a single judge — Justice Satish Sharma — was assigned to give urgent hearing to Team Pilot’s petition. The High Court had been closed for six days after a few employees were found infected with coronavirus.

Mr Pilot, who has insisted that he belongs to the Congress, took his party to court this morning over its move to disqualify him and his supporters.19 MLAs filed the petition, Sachin Pilot is petitioner number 7.

Not attending Congress’s legislature party meetings amounts to disassociating from the Congress and its ideology and will invite action under the constitution, the Congress and the Speaker have contended.

The Team Pilot has argued that not attending two meetings is not ground for disqualification. Elected representatives who voice disagreement cannot said to be acting against party, hence the Speaker’s notice is illegal and should be struck down, the MLAs have said in their petitions.

The rebels were sent notices by the Speaker under the Anti-Defection law, which is part of the Tenth Schedule of the Constitution. Their disqualification will lower the majority mark in the assembly and give Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot a shot at saving his government.

A deferred date will also give Mr Pilot more time to cobble up his numbers to 30 — the math that gives BJP a chance of planning an alternative government.

Mr Pilot has emphatically denied that he is joining the BJP. But that he made no effort to contact the Gandhis despite their repeated overtures and hunkered down at the resort in Haryana — against the party command — is seen as a hardening of stance by the rebel leader.

Yesterday, the Congress had asked Mr Pilot to move out of the BJP-ruled state and stop fraternizing with the BJP.

But his choice of counsel today — Harish Salve and Mukul Rohatgi , top lawyers of the BJP-led Central government — is seen as an indication of his trajectory.

The Congress has accused the BJP of rolling out heavy artillery to defend Mr Pilot and his band of rebels. In view of the tax raids against Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot’s loyalists earlier this week, the party has also accused the BJP of using the power of the government and its agencies to target Mr Gehlot.

PM Modi to address high-level segment of UNESC on Friday

0

For the first after getting elected as a non-permanent member of the UN Security Council (UNSC), Prime Minister Narendra Modi will address a broader UN membership on Friday in an annual High-Level Segment of the United Nations Economic and Social Council (UNESC) session.

The Prime Minister will deliver the keynote address virtually at this year’s High-Level Segment from 9.30 a.m. to 11.30 a.m. (local time) at the UN in New York. He will be speaking at the valedictory session along with the Prime Minister of Norway and UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres.

The annual High-level Segment convenes a diverse group of high-level representatives from the government, the private sector, civil society, and academia. The theme of this year’s High-level Segment is “Multilateralism after COVID19: What kind of UN do we need at the 75th anniversary”.

Set against the changing international environment and the COVID-19 pandemic, this session will focus on critical forces shaping the course of multilateralism and explore ways to bolster the global agenda through strong leadership, effective international institutions, a broadening of participation and enhanced significance of global public goods.

This will be the first opportunity for Prime Minister Modi to address the broader UN membership since India’s overwhelming election as a non-permanent member of the Security Council on June 17, for the term 2021-22.

The theme of the High-Level Segment of the ECOSOC, on the 75th anniversary of the founding of the UN, also resonates with India’s Security Council priority, wherein India has called for a reformed multilateralism’ in a post-COVID-19 world. It also recalls India’s role, as the holder of the inaugural Presidency of ECOSOC (Sir Ramaswami Mudaliar, in 1946).

The Prime Minister had earlier delivered the keynote address virtually at the 70th anniversary of the ECOSOC in January 2016.

IIT-M startup develops portable hospital for corona patients

Modulus Housing, a startup incubated at the Indian Institute of Technology Madras (IIT-M) has developed a portable hospital unit that can be installed anywhere within two hours by four people, said the IIT-M.

In a statement issued here on Thursday, IIT-M said the portable hospital called MediCAB is a decentralized approach to detect, screen, identity, isolate and treat Covid-19 patients in their local communities through these portable microstructures.

According to IIT-M, MediCAB has been recently deployed in the Wayanad district in Kerala to treat corna patients.

The startup is developing micro-hospitals that can be deployed rapidly across the nation.

The medical is foldable and is composed of four zones – a doctor’s room, an isolation room, a medical room/ward, and a twin-bed ICU, maintained at negative pressure.

The startup collaborated with Sree Chitra Tirunal Institute for Medical Sciences and Technology (SCTIMST) who provided inputs on the certifications and customizations necessary for the project.

The company Modulus Housing founded by two IIT alumni in 2018, was supported by the IIT-M Incubation Cell and has the vision to revolutionize housing through modular prefab structures.

They have re-purposed their designs to support the fight against Covid-19.

“The outcome of this pilot project in Kerala will help in proving the applicability of the technology and advantages of micro-hospitals, with MediCAB as an instant infrastructure solution. It can be easily assembled in eight hours by four people. When folded, our collapsible cabins are reduced five-fold, making it very cost-effective for transportation,” Shreeram Ravichandran, Chief Executive Officer said.

“Health infrastructure is crucial in fighting any pandemic. With a contagious disease such as Covid-19, it is essential to have smart health infrastructure to screen, contain, and treat people. Unlike urban areas where there is plenty of existing infrastructures that can be converted to hospitals, rural areas do not have a lot of infrastructures. It is difficult to construct buildings from scratch as the requirement is immediate. As the rural population density is relatively low, more micro-hospitals help greatly in tackling COVID-19 cases.”

Modulus is working on a dual design where these can be rapidly launched as Covid-19 isolation wards.

Post Covid-19, these can be transformed into micro-hospitals/clinics in rural India where the medical infrastructure needs to be augmented.

Modulus Housing has set up its manufacturing unit at Chengalpet (located about 35 km from Chennai).
