Seer Joins Cauvery Protests in Mandya, Karnataka:
Supporting the protest held by members of the Ratha Hitarakshana Samiti in Mandya district on Friday against the release of water to Tamil Nadu, as directed by the Cauvery Water Management Authority (CWMA), Swamiji Nirmalanandanatha, the seer of Adichunchanagiri Mutt, a prominent religious institution, emphasized the necessity of engaging in discussions with Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Jalshakti Minister Gajendra Singh Shekawat to address the River Cauvery dispute.
Swamiji conveyed to reporters in Mandya that the Central Government should intervene on behalf of the State Government, and the State Government should stand up for the farmers. Ultimately, he stressed that the government, elected by the people, should take measures to protect its citizens.
Regarding the release of water to Tamil Nadu, the seer stated that the current situation in Karnataka did not allow for water discharge. He urged the State Government to exercise caution when releasing water to Tamil Nadu to avoid legal complications, pointing out past legal entanglements over Cauvery River water distribution.
He recommended that the State Government once again appeal to the Supreme Court, explaining that the distress-sharing formula for Cauvery River water allocation was not yet prepared. Additionally, he suggested bringing to the Court’s attention that the water levels in Karnataka’s Cauvery basin were low, while Tamil Nadu’s reservoirs had more water storage.
