Meta launches new platform to remove minors’ intimate images online

To protect the images of youngsters and minors from misuse online, Meta introduced a fresh platform.

The social media network said, this is helping the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children in the development of ‘Take It Down, the stage which gives assistance to stop the distribution of adult pics online.

“We have also announced the features that do strict protection for the teenagers from mistrustful adults on social media like Instagram, Facebook, etc..” said Antigone Davis, Global Head of Safety at Meta.

‘Take It Down’ lets young people take back control of their intimate images.

People can go to TakeItDown.NCMEC.org and follow the instructions to submit a case that will proactively search for their intimate images on participating apps.

The platform then assigns a unique hash value and” numerical code a” to their image or video privately and directly from their own device.

“Once they submit the hash to NCMEC, companies like ours can use those hashes to find any copies of the image, take them down, and prevent the content from being posted on our apps in the future,” said Meta.

With the launch of Take It Down, people of all ages can stop the spread of their intimate images online, including young people under 18 years old; parents or trusted adults on behalf of a young person, and adults who are worried about images taken of them when they were under 18.

On Instagram, the company recently introduced new features to make it even more difficult for suspicious adults to interact with teens.

“Now, these adults will no longer be able to see teen accounts when scrolling through the list of people who have liked a post or when looking at an account’s Followers or Following list,” said the company.

If a suspicious adult follows a teen account, “we will send that teen a notification prompting them to review and remove the new follower”.

The company is also prompting teens to review and restrict their privacy settings.

“We’ve developed more than 30 tools to support the safety of teens and families across our apps, including supervision tools for parents and age-verification technology that helps teens have age-appropriate experiences online,” said Meta.

Users can now convert images into stickers on WhatsApp for iOS

Chating app WhatsApp, which is meta gained messaging platform for users to chat, is releasing a new sticker maker tool that will access customers’ change from pics into stickers on iOS.

The help of third-party applications for creating new stickers will delete by the new feature, said, WABetaInfo.

After extracting a subject out of an image, users just need to paste it within a chat to create a custom sticker from an image.

If the feature is available, the platform will instantly turn the image into a sticker that can be added to the user’s collection of stickers.

This tool was available to some users in the past few days, however, now it is rolling out to everyone on iOS 16.

Users now don’t have to switch between different applications or tools to create and use their own stickers.

“This definitely saves time and makes the process of creating and using custom stickers faster,” the report said.

Meanwhile, earlier this month, the messaging platform added some new stickers to its avatar sticker pack for Android and iOS, following its announcement of the ability to create personalised avatars.

Snap, the parent company of Snapchat, has introduced its new artificial intelligence (AI) chatbot for Snapchat. It is powered by the latest version of OpenAI’s GPT technology.

The “My AI” chatbot is available as an experimental feature for Snapchat+ subscribers and will be rolling out this week, the company said in a blog post on Monday.

“My AI can recommend birthday gift ideas for your BFF, plan a hiking trip for a long weekend, suggest a recipe for dinner, or even write a haiku about cheese for your cheddar-obsessed pal.”

Users can also name the chatbot and customize the wallpaper for their Chat.

My AI, like other AI-powered chatbots, is prone to hallucinations and can be tricked to say almost anything.

While My AI is built to avoid any sort of biased, inaccurate, dangerous or misleading content, mistakes might however happen.

Also, users can press and hold any message from My AI to provide feedback.

“Please be aware of its many deficiencies and sorry in advance! All conversations with My AI will be stored and may be reviewed to improve the product experience,” the company said.

“Please do not share any secrets with My AI and do not rely on it for advice,” it added.

Twitter account of Trinamool Congress hacked; logo & picture changed

The official Twitter account of the Trinamool Congress has been hacked, with the picture and logo of the handle changed.

The party’s national spokesman and Rajya Sabha member Derek O’Brien has confirmed the development and claimed that communications are being made with the Twitter authorities to bring the handle back to its original format.

In the hacked handle the name has been changed to “Yuga Labs” and the original party logo has been replaced by a symbolic picture combining the letters “Y” and “L”.

The “blue tick”, however, is still there.

Party sources said that the matter came to the notice of the leaders early Tuesday morning and they doubt that the hacking incident took place on late Monday night.

“The Twitter authorities have contacted and they have assured us of giving back the party’s official Twitter handle the original looks at the earliest,” a party leader said.

However, despite being hacked no derogatory comment slamming the party has been posted through this Twitter handle.

The last tweet posted by the handle at 9.01 p.m. on Monday night, read: “#DidirSurkshaKawach is a mammoth effort at securing basic sustenance for every resident in Bengal, irrespective of age, gender, caste or religion, to achieve state-wide inclusive- growth & expand welfare cover, Didir Doots is generating awareness across households.”

Party sources said that besides informing the Twitter authorities about the development, the leadership might also file an official complaint with the cybercrime division of the Kolkata Police.

Former BharatPe Co-founder and Managing Director Ashneer Grover and his wife Madhuri Jain Grover are apparently ready with their new startup, this time in the sphere of fantasy sports with a new app called CrickPe, the media reported on Monday.

According to leading startup covering portal Entrackr, citing sources, CrickPe is expected to be launched in the “next few weeks”.

“The app is in closed beta mode and will soon open to the public,” the report said, citing people close to the matter.

The CrickPe website appears to be a fantasy sports website for cricket fans and has an image of Ashneer. Although the veracity of the website could not be independently ascertained at the moment.

Grover or his wife was yet to comment or tweet about their new venture under their newly-formed venture called Third Unicorn.

The Third Unicorn has been building a “market shaking” business that is “bootstrapped” and “without limelight”, according to a recent LinkedIn post by Ashneer.

Ashneer and Madhuri Jain are currently fighting a court case where BharatPe has accused them of swindling Rs 88.6 crore while being at the helm of the company.

According to data accessed through Tofler, the Grovers last year registered a new company to begin their new journey.

The firm had a total paid-up capital of Rs 10 lakh and an authorized share capital of Rs 20 lakh.

Celebrating his 40th birthday, Grover tweeted last year that it is time to build another unicorn.

“Today I turn 40. Some will say I’ve lived a full life and experienced more things than most. Created value for generations. For me, it’s still unfinished business. Time to disrupt another sector. It’s time for the Third Unicorn,” he had posted.

Grover also said he was planning to start his own venture without seeking funds from the investors.

Fraudsters hit LinkedIn with recruitment scam wave amid tech layoffs

Professional networking major LinkedIn has been hit by several state-of-the-art recruitment scams after massive tech layoffs, and fraudsters are cheating those sacked by offering them jobs that do not exist.

According to the Financial Times, phony recruitments are being run by scammers pretending to be employers on Microsoft-owned LinkedIn.

“There’s certainly an increase in the sophistication of the attacks and the cleverness,” Oscar Rodriguez, LinkedIn’s vice president of product management, was quoted as saying in the report.

The platform has sought to block tens of millions of fake accounts in recent months, as regulators warn of a spike in job-related frauds.

Cyber security company Zscaler recently described a scam that targeted job aspirants, where fraudsters approached people through LinkedIn’s direct messaging feature InMail.

“They also created Skype profiles with the picture of the real recruiter from the companies to conduct interviews as well,” Deepen Desai, vice-president of security research at Zscaler, was quoted as saying.

Fraudsters are now using artificial intelligence (AI) to create profile photos that can fool human eyes very easily.

The US Federal Trade Commission (FTC) recently said there were more than 92,000 job-related and business scams in 2022, with $367.4 million reported stolen.

“We see websites being set up, we see phone numbers with a seemingly professional operator picking up the phone and answering on the company’s behalf. We see a move to more sophisticated deception,” Rodriguez was quoted as saying.

Thousands of tech employees have lost their jobs at Big Tech and other companies in the global macroeconomic conditions.

Following another round of layoffs, Twitter product manager Esther Crawford is no longer employed by the company.

Crawford led various projects at Twitter, including the company’s Blue with verification subscription and its forthcoming payments platform.

More than 50 employees were impacted by the layoffs, which were spread across several departments. Martijn de Kuijper, the creator of the now-shuttered Revue newsletter platform that Twitter acquired in 2021, was also among them, reports The Verge, citing sources.

With this recent cut, Twitter CEO Elon Musk has done at least four rounds of layoffs.

This is happening despite his promise not to sack more employees after his brutal layoff exercise in November last year that affected two-thirds of the micro-blogging platform’s 7,500 employees.

On Sunday, it was reported that the Twitter CEO was laying off more Twitter employees, and affected employees received notices via email on Saturday. The recent cut targeted a number of departments, including ads and infrastructure engineering.

Now, the company likely has less than 2,000 employees, which was about 7,500 when Musk took over.

Earlier this month, Musk had laid off dozens of workers across sales and engineering departments, including one of Musk’s direct reporting executives, who was managing engineering for Twitter’s ads business.

The company also shut down two of its three India offices and directed its employees to work from home, as part of the Twitter CEO’s mission to cut costs and turn the struggling social media service profitable.

Twitter closed its offices in New Delhi and its financial hub in Mumbai. In November last year, Musk fired more than 90 percent of its staff in India, around 200-plus.

Apple is reportedly planning to release a new MacBook Air with a larger 15-inch display in April 2023.

According to display analyst Ross Young, the laptop is expected to be powered by the M2 chip and will likely support Wi-Fi 6E and Bluetooth 5.3, reports MacRumors.

While a new 13-inch MacBook Air with an OLED display is rumored to be released in 2024, the 15-inch model is expected to have a standard LCD display.

Moreover, similar to the 13-inch MacBook Air, the 15-inch model will reportedly be available with the M2 chip.

The company said that the M2 chip has up to an 18 percent faster CPU, up to a 35 percent faster GPU, and up to a 40 percent faster Neural Engine compared to the M1 chip.

Further, the new MacBook Air may offer longer battery life.

According to Apple, the 13-inch MacBook Air with the M2 chip lasts up to 18 hours per charge, so perhaps the 15-inch model could get closer to the 20-hour mark.

The report also mentioned that, while the 13-inch MacBook Air with the M2 chip is limited to Wi-Fi 6, the 15-inch MacBook Air will likely get Wi-Fi 6E.

The tech giant already updated the Mac mini with the M2 chip and Wi-Fi 6E last month.

The company also added Bluetooth 5.3 support to several of its most recent devices, and the 15-inch MacBook Air could be next.

As cloud gaming platform Amazon Luna has been losing games lately, it now appears to be adding one of the world’s most popular games, Fortnite, developed by Epic Games.

This week, an Amazon Luna user on Reddit discovered Fortnite in their library, but the game was quickly removed, reports 9to5Google.

The game’s listing in the Luna web app was marked as “Not Available,” but a screenshot showed the latest version of the game with artwork from the Chapter 4, Season One trailer in place.

According to the Reddit user who briefly saw the game in their library, they were able to link their Epic Games account — functionality that Amazon Luna was not known to have — and the game was listed as supporting play on accounts that subscribe to Amazon Luna+ or have Amazon Prime.

As a result, many users will be able to play the game for free on the cloud platform, said the report.

Amazon Luna lost more than 50 games from its Luna+ subscription this month.

Luna dropped 53 games, including titles like ‘Snake Pass’, ‘Retro Classic: Gate of Doom’ and ‘Bridge Constructor Portal’.

“Our goal with Amazon Luna has always been to keep our selection as fresh as possible and to offer a wide array of high-quality, immersive games for our customers. With that in mind, we’ll be refreshing our content offerings,” Amazon explained in a statement to 9To5Google.

It also dropped many games throughout last December and January.

NASA set to send SpaceX Crew-6 mission to ISS early next week

The US space agency is geared up to send four astronauts to the International Space Station (ISS) aboard a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket that will launch the company’s Dragon Endeavour spacecraft.

The SpaceX Crew-6 mission will carry NASA astronauts Stephen Bowen and Warren “Woody” Hoburg, United Arab Emirates (UAE) astronaut Sultan Alneyadi, and Roscosmos cosmonaut Andrey Fedyaev to the space station for a six-month science mission.

The SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket has reached a key milestone ahead of liftoff.

While standing on the launch pad at Kennedy Space Center’s Launch Complex 39A in Florida, the rocket’s nine Merlin first-stage engines roared to life for seven seconds, completing the routine but critical integrated static fire test, the US space agency said in a statement late on Friday.

This is the sixth crew rotation mission with astronauts using the SpaceX Dragon spacecraft on a Falcon 9 rocket to the orbiting laboratory as part of the agency’s Commercial Crew Programme.

In October last year, a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket took NASA astronauts Nicole Mann and Josh Cassada, Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA) astronaut Koichi Wakata, and Roscosmos cosmonaut Anna Kikina to the ISS.

During their stay, the Crew-5 mission was set to conduct more than 200 science experiments and technology demonstrations, including studies on printing human organs in space and a better understanding of heart disease.

The Crew-5 mission conducted new scientific research in areas such as cardiovascular health, bioprinting, and fluid behavior in microgravity to prepare for human exploration beyond low-Earth orbit and to benefit life on Earth.
