Lucy spacecraft set to swing by Earth to reach Jupiter asteroids

0

A NASA spacecraft named Lucy, the first mission to the Jupiter Trojan asteroids, will skim the earth’s atmosphere, passing a mere 350 km above the surface on October 16, to gain some of the orbital energy it needs to travel to this never-before-visited population of asteroids.

The Trojan asteroids are trapped in orbits around the Sun at the same distance as Jupiter, either far ahead of or behind the giant planet.

Lucy is currently one year into a 12-year voyage and this gravity assist will place it on a new trajectory for a two-year orbit, at which time it will return to Earth for a second gravity assist, NASA said in a statement.

This second assist will give Lucy the energy it needs to cross the main asteroid belt, where it will observe asteroid ‘Donaldjohanson’, and then travel into the leading Trojan asteroid swarm.

There, Lucy will fly past six Trojan asteroids: Eurybates and its satellite Queta, Polymele and its yet unnamed satellite, Leucus, and Orus.

Lucy will then return to Earth for a third gravity assist in 2030 to re-target the spacecraft for a rendezvous with the Patroclus-Menoetius binary asteroid pair in the trailing Trojan asteroid swarm, according to the space agency.

Lucy’s trajectory will bring the spacecraft very close to Earth, lower even than the International Space Station, which means that Lucy will pass through a region full of earth-orbiting satellites and debris.

To ensure the safety of the spacecraft, NASA developed procedures to anticipate any potential hazard and, if needed, to execute a small maneuver to avoid a collision.

“The Lucy team has prepared two different maneuvers. If the team detects that Lucy is at risk of colliding with a satellite or piece of debris, then, 12 hours before the closest approach to Earth, the spacecraft will execute one of these, altering the time of closest approach by either two or four seconds,” said Coralie Adam, Lucy deputy navigation team chief from KinetX Aerospace in Simi Valley, California.

This is a small correction, but it is enough to avoid a potentially catastrophic collision, Adam added.

Lucy will be passing the Earth at such a low altitude that the team had to include the effect of atmospheric drag when designing this flyby.

“In the original plan, Lucy was actually going to pass about 30 miles closer to the Earth,” said Rich Burns, Lucy’s project manager at NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Maryland.

Lucy will then rapidly recede from the Earth’s vicinity, passing by the Moon and taking a few more calibration images before continuing out into interplanetary space.

Instagram brings new age verification test to Indian users

0

Meta-owned Instagram has brought its new test for users to verify their age via an original ID or video selfie to India, amid growing worries that kids are using fake dates of birth to create profiles on social media platforms.

If someone attempts to edit their date of birth on Instagram from under the age of 18 to 18, or over, in India, the company will now require them to verify their age using one of two options: upload their ID or record a video selfie.

“We’re testing this so we can make sure teens and adults are in the right experience for their age group. Testing began in June this year in the US, and now it’s expanding to India and Brazil,” the company said.

The company plans to expand the test to the UK and the EU before the end of the year.

“We’re also removing Social Vouching as an option to verify age from the test to make some improvements,” Instagram added.

The Social Vouching option allowed users to ask mutual followers to confirm how old they were. The three people they selected to vouch for them received a request to confirm their age and needed to respond within three days.

Now, those part of the test can choose to upload a video selfie to verify their age in India.

“If you choose this option, you’ll see instructions on your screen to guide you. After you take a video selfie, we share the image with Yoti, and nothing else. Yoti’s technology estimates your age based on your facial features and shares that estimate with us,” according to Instagram.

Yoti is a company that offers privacy-preserving ways to verify age.

“Meta and Yoti then delete the image. The technology cannot recognize your identity – just your age,” it added.

The company requires people to be at least 13 years old to sign up for Instagram.

Earlier this week, the UK’s media watchdog Ofcom said that more than one-third of children between the ages of 8 and 17 are using various social media platforms after signing up with fake dates of birth.

“Our latest research shows that most (77 percent) social media users aged between eight and 17 have their own account or profile on at least one of the large social media platforms,” Ofcom said in a statement.

Twitter to soon allow users ability to control who can tag them in tweets

0

Twitter is working on a new feature that will allow users to control who can mention them in their tweets, not letting anyone to tag or mention your Twitter handle with their posts unless you want them to.

The feature, when it arrives, will make a fundamental shift in how people mention and tag others with their posts on the platform.

App researcher Jane Manchun Wong first spotted the test version of the feature, saying “Twitter is working on letting you control who can mention you on Twitter”.

Twitter privacy designer Dominic Camozzi confirmed that the feature is in the works but later deleted the tweet.

The feature will let you control who can mention you, like people you follow, everyone, or no one at all.

The feature will prevent Twitter users from bullying or harassment.

In August, the company launched Twitter Circle which allows people the flexibility to choose who can see and engage with their content on a Tweet-by-Tweet basis.

This makes it easier to have more intimate conversations and build closer connections with select followers.

Before you post on Twitter, you’ll now see an option to share your Tweet with either your circle or your full follower list. Circles can contain up to 150 people, and you can adjust who’s in and who’s out at any time.

“Don’t worry, no one will be notified of any changes you make to your circle,” said Twitter.

43% of Indians not willing to pay extra for 5G services: Report

0

As India rolls out 5G services at some locations in select cities, 43 percent of those willing to switch to 5G are not willing to pay anything more than the current tariff for 3G or 4G services, a report showed on Friday.

While many more smartphone users are likely to come on board if the shift to 5G addresses issues like call drop/connect, network availability, and low speed, another 43 percent indicated they are willing to pay up to 10 percent extra tariff, according to the report by online community platform LocalCircles.

Just 2 percent of them showed a willingness to pay between 25-50 percent more tariff for 5G.

As against 4G speeds of 40-50 Mbps depending on the area and connectivity in India, 5G services are expected to support speeds of 300 Mbps or more.

To begin with, Reliance Jio and Airtel have identified Ahmedabad, Bengaluru, Chennai, Varanasi, Chandigarh, Delhi, Jamnagar, Gandhinagar, Mumbai, Pune, Lucknow, Kolkata, Siliguri, Gurugram and Hyderabad for the first phase of launch.

According to the report, just 5 percent of mobile subscribers surveyed are ready to move to 5G in 2022.

While 20 percent surveyed said they already have a 5G device, another 4 percent are likely to get one this year.

Another 20 percent said they are likely to purchase a 5G device in 2023.

Out of more than 500 million smartphone users in India, about 100 million are expected to have a 5G-ready device by the end of this year.

Nearly 24 percent of respondents shared that they have no plans to buy a newly upgraded device in the foreseeable future, while another 22 percent are yet to make up their minds, the findings showed.

The Department of Telecommunication met with the operators as well as phone makers earlier this week to update the government about their plans so that the 5G roll-out can happen at the earliest.

Samsung said that they are working with their operator partners and are committed to rolling out OTA updates across all its 5G devices by mid-November, Apple said that it will start rolling out 5G to iPhone users in December.

The majority of mobile subscribers expect that upgrading to 5G service will lead to a reduction in call drop/connect issues, better network availability, and speed

India IT spending shows resilience despite global headwinds: Report

0

Despite strong global headwinds, Indian IT spending is expected to grow by 13.8 percent this year, down from 25.3 percent in 2021, an IDC report said on Thursday.

The overall drop in IT spending growth considers the recovery sentiment pervasive in Q1 2022 and the drag due to the weakening economic scenario in Q2 onwards.

According to the report, the contraction in IT spending is due to reduced consumer technology spending. Enterprise technology spending is stable as enterprises continue to protect their budgets and are managing by reallocating resources to needed items.

“Based on the current forecast of a mild global recession, we expect IT spending of Indian enterprises to demonstrate resilience in the short term,” said Vinay Gupta, Research Director, IT Spending Guides, IDC Asia/Pacific.

“Indian enterprises continue to focus on their digital innovation initiatives, business operations resiliency, and customer experience programs. However, enterprises are keeping a sharp eye on global events,” he added.

The post-pandemic recovery of the Indian economy in late 2021 and early 2022 faced multiple headwinds. Inflation, global geopolitical tensions, devaluation of the rupee against the US dollar, a slowdown in global growth, and increasing interest rates are risks to economic growth.

“The risk of recession worldwide has continued to rise amid increasing inflation and the expectation of a tightening monetary policy. The Indian economy faces similar challenges and enterprises are turning cautious during these uncertain times,” said the IDC.

Expectations are that India’s GDP growth will be at risk in 2023 given the global headwinds, slowing down IT spending growth.

A lot will depend on RBI’s monetary policy going forward and the government’s public CAPEX push, industrial capacity utilization, and improvement in the infrastructure sector said the report.

Samsung unveils One UI 5, expands collaboration with Google

0

Samsung on Thursday showcased its latest updates to software and services at an annual tech conference, which it said were aimed at improving overall user experience through technology innovations.

At the Samsung Developer Conference (SDC) 2022 in San Francisco, the South Korean tech giant unveiled the upgraded, new user interface One UI 5 for its Galaxy products and a vision for a more connected home life, partly through an expanded partnership with Google.

Samsung said the One UI 5 platform comes with new features for more personalized experiences, such as the new security and privacy dashboard that enables users to customize personal privacy settings by scanning vulnerabilities and recommending security updates.

It also comes with custom-built Modes and Routines and a Dynamic Lock screen that displays multiple visuals on Galaxy devices, reports Yonhap news agency.

Samsung’s Bixby, the voice assistant platform, has improved to answer calls on users’ behalf or share typed messages with the caller, according to the company.

Samsung said it would continue its efforts to provide “calm technology” by seamlessly connecting electronic devices.

Calm technology refers to a type of technology that requires minimal attention and work from users.

In early September, Samsung vowed to popularise its home automation platform, SmartThings, this year, in a bid to help provide a more connected and sustainable home life.

SmartThings is Samsung’s software to connect and control home appliances, with more than 230 million users worldwide.

By the end of next year, Samsung plans to make all of its home appliances Wi-Fi enabled and allow home devices from 13 different brands that belong to the Home Connectivity Alliance (HCA) to be connected and controlled.

Samsung also said it has expanded its partnership with Google to remove challenges facing homeowners who use multi, different smart home platforms.

The two tech companies will release a multi-admin feature in the coming weeks that makes it easier for users to connect devices on different ecosystems and control Matter-enabled devices through SmartThings or Google Home apps on Android.

Matter’ is an open standard for innovative home technology. It enables users to set up their devices with their favorite platforms and ecosystems without changing hardware or software, according to Google.

Meta takes on The Wire again, rejects false allegations in its reports

0

Meta (formerly Facebook) has taken on The Wire publication again, saying that while it is legitimate for them to be held accountable for their content decisions, “the allegations made by The Wire are false” and the screenshots of two emails from Meta employee used in the story are “fake”.

The two articles published by the online news platform alleged that a user whose account is cross-checked can influence content decisions on Instagram without any review.

“Our cross-check system was built to prevent potential over-enforcement mistakes and to double-check cases where a decision could require more understanding or there could be a higher risk for a mistake. To be clear, our cross-check program does not grant enrolled accounts the power to automatically have the content removed from our platform,” the tech giant said in a blog post, titled “What The Wire Reports Got Wrong” published late on Wednesday.

The company said that the allegations “contain mischaracterizations of how our enforcement processes work, and rely on what we believe to be fabricated evidence in their reporting”.

The independent Oversight Board announced last October that it will review Meta’s cross-check system and provide recommendations on how it can improve it.

Meta also tried to explain what went wrong with the two articles.

“The first article claims that a cross-check account has the power to have the content removed from our platform with no questions asked. This is false. Cross-check has nothing to do with the ability to report posts to seek the removal of content. The posts in question were surfaced for review by automated systems, not user reports,” said the company.

The system is designed to ensure that the enforcement decisions related to content posted by cross-check accounts are made accurately and with additional levels of human review.

“We don’t exempt anyone from our Community Standards and remove content that violates them if we see it,” the company added.

“This article was also based on allegedly leaked screenshots from our internal tools. We believe this document is fabricated. The URL on that ‘report’ is not in use. The naming convention is one we don’t use. There is no such report,” the social network said, adding that they did not identify a user report regarding the @cringearchivist content in September as reported.

“The second story cites emails from a Meta employee — the screenshot included in the story has two emails — both are fake. There are no such emails,” the company alleged.

The same story references an internal journalist’s “watch list”.

“No such list exists”.

Meta said that they accept scrutiny of their content decisions, “but we fundamentally reject these false allegations based on what we believe to be fabricated evidence. We hope that The Wire is the victim of this hoax, not the perpetrator”.

Meta Chief Information Security Officer Guy Rosen on Tuesday slammed The Wire for publishing two stories, which, according to Rosen, were “outlandish and riddled with falsities”.

Rosen, in a Twitter thread, said that he wanted to set the record straight about two stories run this week by The Wire “with untrue claims about Meta’s content moderation operations and processes”.

Working with telcos to provide seamless 5G by year-end, handset makers tell govt

0

Leading mobile handset players on Wednesday said they are working with telecom service providers to release necessary 5G software updates by year-end, as the government told them to fix the gaps and ensure a seamless transition to 5G for millions in the first phase.

In a meeting, the government told the stakeholders to quickly support the new technology.

While Apple said it will roll out 5G-enabled services via an over-the-air (OTA) update for iPhones by the end of December, Samsung said it will release software updates by mid-November.

An OTA update is the wireless delivery of new software, firmware, or other data to mobile devices. Wireless carriers and original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) typically use over-the-air updates to deploy firmware and configure phones for use on their networks over Wi-Fi or mobile broadband.

“We are working with our carrier partners in India to bring the best 5G experience to iPhone users as soon as network validation and testing for quality and performance are completed. 5G will be enabled via a software update and will start rolling out to iPhone users in December,” Apple said in a statement.

Samsung said that it has pioneered 5G technology development since 2009 and took the leading role in standardizing 5G technology globally.

“In India, Samsung has the widest portfolio of 5G devices. We are working closely with our operator partners and are committed to rolling out OTA updates across all our 5G devices by mid-November,” a company spokesperson said.

Samsung, Apple, and Xiaomi were among the major mobile phone makers present in the meeting, which was presided over by telecom as well as IT secretaries.

“Pixel 7, 7 Pro, and Pixel 6a are 5G capable devices. We are actively working with the Indian carriers to enable functionality at the earliest,” a Google India spokesperson said in a statement.

Muralikrishnan B, President, Xiaomi India, told IANS that currently, 100 percent of its 5G smartphone models support the NSA network out of the box, wherein users can choose ‘Prefer 5G’ in network settings to connect to the 5G network”.

“We have already started rolling out the FOTA (firmware over-the-air) updates to select devices like Xiaomi 12 Pro 5G, Mi 11X Pro, Xiaomi 11i, Xiaomi 11i Hypercharge, among others. Most devices will start receiving OTA updates by Diwali,” Muralikrishnan added.

Airtel and Jio have rolled out their 5G services in key metros in a phased manner. Vodafone-Idea is yet to reveal its 5G roll-out plans.

WhatsApp now a spam factory, 1 in 2 Indian swamped with promotional messages

0

Meta-owned WhatsApp has become a spam factory as more than one in two Indians now say that they are facing four or more spam messages each day, a report showed on Wednesday.

Despite clear norms laid by the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) on unsolicited communication, consumers still face unwanted calls, SMS (short messaging services), and Whatsapp messages from vendors, telemarketers, banks, insurance brokers, car dealers, pathology labs, property, and other investment agents, among others.

About 68 percent of mobile subscribers, on average, receive 4 or more promotional or spam SMSs every day with every subscriber surveyed getting spam, according to the online community platform LocalCircles.

About 95 percent of Whatsapp subscribers surveyed got spam while every mobile subscriber surveyed got it.

Financial services, real estate services, and pathology services are the top sectors sending spam SMS as well as spam Whatsapp, indicating the same offenders are now spamming using both channels.

About 77 percent of mobile subscribers surveyed want the TRAI to work with telcos and enable a mark spam feature with each SMS.

There were reports that the Department of Telecommunication (DOT) has decided to levy fines ranging from Rs 1,000 per violation for zero-10 breaches, Rs 5,000 each for 10-50 violations, and Rs 10,000 each for more than 50 violations by registered telemarketers.

However, the telecom authority has not issued any notification in this regard.

“Unsolicited SMS, not to be confused with communication from government or any other authorized source, is a misuse of citizens’ personal data. Many people face issues of unwanted messages and calls made to them by fraudsters, spammers, telemarketers, despite registering on TRAI’s Do Not Call Registry (NDNS),” the findings showed.

Last year, around 93 million phone numbers registered with the TRAI’s NDNS were kept on sale on the Darknet, according to reports.

Whatsapp Business was rolled out a few years ago and in 2021, the company mandated that users of the platform must receive messages from Whatsapp Business (based on their usage of Whatsapp and parent platform Facebook) for them to continue using the platform, according to LocalCircles report.

While users resisted this initially and started using alternate platforms like Signal and Telegram, over time most gave up and accepted the revised terms.

About 77 percent said that TRAI should work with telcos to mandatorily embed mark spam in each SMS message so users can easily report spammers.

Samsung says will roll out 5G software update by mid-November in India

0

Samsung India on Wednesday said it will roll out the software update for its vast portfolio of 5G devices in the country by the middle of next month.

The company said in a statement to the media that it is currently working with operator partners for a seamless roll-out of the 5G experience for users.

“We are working closely with our operator partners and are committed to rolling out OTA updates across all our 5G devices by the middle of the November 2022, enabling Indian consumers to experience 5G seamlessly,” a Samsung India spokesperson told media.

“Samsung has pioneered 5G technology development since 2009 and took the leading role in standardising 5G technology globally,” the company spokesperson added.

In India, Samsung has the widest portfolio of 5G devices.

The announcement came as the government convened a meeting of handset manufacturers and telecom service providers on Wednesday to ensure a smooth transition towards the new technology.

Prioritizing software upgrades would enable the early adoption of 5G in India.

Airtel and Jio have rolled out their 5G services in key metros in a phased manner. There are no 5G rollout plans from Vodafone-Idea yet.

India is home to more than 500 million smartphone users and over 100 million users with 5G-ready smartphones wish to upgrade to a 5G subscription in 2023, according to the latest Ericsson report.

The study said that Indian smartphone users are willing to pay a 45 percent premium for a plan bundled with novel experiences, which could be a delight for Internet service providers ready with 5G.

However, there are multiple challenges ahead for telecom service providers to meet the roll-out deadlines.
