Three new Covid-19 deaths in Odisha; toll touches 8,350

0

Odisha on Friday reported three fresh Covid-19 fatalities taking the death toll to 8,350.

According to the health department, one person each from Khurda, Mayurbhanj and Nayagarh districts have succumbed to the disease.

“This list does not reflect deaths occurring on a particular day. It gives details of past deaths for which the death audit process has been duly completed and the cause of death has been identified as due to Covid-19,” the department said.

The state also registered 170 Covid-19 cases in the last 24 hours, of which 24 persons are below 18 years of age. While 98 cases were detected from quarantine centres, 72 are local contact cases, the information and public relations department said in a tweet.

With this, the total Covid-19 cases in the state surged to 10,42,943, of which 10,30,889 persons have recovered, while the active cases stand at 3,651.

Regarding the ongoing vaccination drive, Family Welfare Director Bijay Panigrahi said about 80 per cent of the total beneficiaries have received their first dose, while 37 per cent got both the doses.

“Har Ghar Dastak vaccination campaign has been launched on November 2 in the state to complete double dose administration of all the left out beneficiaries and second dose due beneficiaries as early as possible,” he said.

Despite mass vaccination, infection has increased in Europe and China. Therefore, there’s no room for complacency, Panigrahi said.

Public health director Niranjan Mishra said Europe and China have reported delta variants of coronavirus. India had already reported the variants during the second wave.

“About 99 per cent Covid-19 cases in India are delta variants. So, we think that our population has immunity power for the variant. However, we have to remain cautious,” added Mishra.

Ami Trivedi opens up on playing a mother in ‘Yeh Rishta Kya Kehlata Hai’

Actress Ami Trivedi, who plays the character of a mother ‘Manjari’ in ‘Yeh Rishta Kya Kehlata Hai’, feels privileged to be part of a show that’s been on since 2009. She talks about her role and how challenging it is.

“I feel privileged and it is my pleasure to be a part of ‘Yeh Rishta Kya Kehlata Hai’. The show is a legacy. It has proved itself by being one of the longest-running shows on Indian television, and it’s great to be a part of it,” she said about the show. She was seen in the daily soaps like ‘Kumkum Ek Pyara Sa Bandhan’, ‘Kituu Sab Janti Hai’, ‘Papad Pol’ and many others.

She calls her character a very loving and doting mom. “She is a very dutiful wife also and is one of the underachievers in a family of achievers. But she is very happy and content with the way she is. She enjoys keeping her family happy, managing the house and she really loves her son,” she said.

For her, as an actor, it was a challenge to reprise a role that she has not portrayed before. “I’m pretty excited to portray this character because she is a mother. I have been only doing comedy in the past few years of my life, so this is a completely different genre for me. At the same time, it is a character that I have not portrayed on television in a very long time,” she said. She is a mother off-screen too, so now she relates to the love quotient which a mother has for her child.”

“I also know where the mom makes sacrifices and why she happily and selflessly does so. There are many qualities about my character which I can relate to now. She is a character which is also related to the masses because I’m sure there are a lot of children who will probably see their mother in this character and a lot of women will identify with the pain or the love or the suffering or the sacrifices or the pleasures that this character experiences,” concluded Ami.

Google testing easier way to search for files in Drive

0

Tech giant Google is preparing to beta test new search filters in Google Drive, which will hopefully make it easier to find the exact file you are looking for.

Dubbed “search chips,” the feature adds a line of filters to the top of the Drive interface, letting you limit your search by things like file type, last modification date, or which other users are associated with a specific file, The Verge reported on Thursday.

Google Drive already has some search filtering options, but they are relatively basic and hidden in a sub-menu in the search bar, the report said.

In contrast, the new search chips are presented front and centre, and they look set to offer a wider range of filtering options. A similar feature was introduced in Gmail early last year.

For users who would like to try out the new Drive search chips beta, Google is directing interested users toward this sign-up form.

Search chips will eventually be available to all Google Workspace users, including G Suite Basic and Business customers, as per the report.

Recently, Google has announced the general availability of offline viewing for all file types in Google Drive on the web.

The new feature lets you access PDFs, images, Microsoft Office documents and other non-Google files even without an internet connection.

HPV vaccine reduces cervical cancer rates by 87%

0

The human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine reduces cervical cancer rates by 87 per cent in women who were offered the jab between the ages of 12-13, says a new study published in the Lancet.

Researchers from King’s College London, found the HPV vaccination programme prevented around 450 cervical cancers and around 17,200 pre-cancers by the middle of 2019.

They also found cervical cancer rates were reduced by 62 per cent in women offered vaccination between the ages of 14-16, and 34 per cent in women aged of 16-18 when they were offered the jab.

The study, looked at all cervical cancers diagnosed in England in women aged 20-64 between January 2006 and June 2019.

Three of these cohorts formed the vaccinated population, where women were vaccinated with Cervarix between the ages of 12-13, 14-16 and 16-18 respectively. Incidences of cervical cancer and non-invasive cervical carcinoma (CIN3) in the seven populations were recorded separately.

The vaccine programme started in England in 2008 and at the time used the bivalent vaccine, Cervarix, which protects against the two most common types of HPV. Since September 2012, the quadrivalent vaccine Gardasil has been used instead.

Almost all cervical cancers are caused by HPV. The vaccine is most effective when given before sexual activity when people are unlikely to have been exposed to HPV. The virus is linked to other cancers including vaginal, vulval, anal, penile and some head and neck cancers.

“It’s been incredible to see the impact of HPV vaccination, and now we can prove it prevented hundreds of women from developing cancer in England. We’ve known for many years that HPV vaccination is very effective in preventing particular strains of the virus, but to see the real-life impact of the vaccine has been truly rewarding,” said lead author Professor Peter Sasieni, lead author from the School of Cancer and Pharmaceutical Sciences.

“These remarkable findings confirm that the HPV vaccine saves lives by dramatically reducing cervical cancer rates among women. This reminds us that vaccines are one of the most important tools we have to help us live longer, healthier lives,” added Dr Vanessa Saliba, Consultant Epidemiologist in Immunisations at Public Health England.

Mrunal Jain: ‘Sooryavanshi’ is the biggest break of my career

‘Uttaran’ actor Mrunal Jain has been on the small screen for quite some time, but he considers the Akshay Kumar-starrer ‘Sooryavanshi’, which is releasing on Friday, November 5, to be the biggest break of his career.

“It is this year’s most anticipated film and it is finally releasing after being on hold for a year and half,” Mrunal told in interview. “If this film works, the entertainment industry and movie theatres will be back in action. The audiences can now watch it on the big screen. I am definitely looking forward to the film and I hope people notice my work,” he added.

“For the past three years, I have been getting calls only for negative roles only,” Mrunal continued. “In ‘Sooryavanshi’, too, I get to play the antagonist. It’s interesting that with my kind of positive face, I am going to play the antagonist. As an actor, I feel I’ve always been positive and played the protagonist. In the last film I also did a negative role, so I think I’m actually getting tied down to antagonistic roles. I’m exploring this side of me,” added the actor who is known for ‘Hitler Didi’, ‘Bandini’ and other television shows.

For the film, which is primarily the star vehicle of Akshay Kumar and Katrina Kaif, with Ajay Devgn and Ranvir Singh putting in cameos, Mrunal shot in Hyderabad, Ooty and Mumbai. “So, three different locations in the year 2019. And of course, all the superstars were there,” he said.

Every moment on the sets was interesting for him. “It was a completely new experience for me to be in a Rohit Shetty movie. It was like a dream. I was actually living in my dreamland. Every moment, every shot, every scene was a learning experience,” Mrunal said.

“I was seeing the way the actors are dedicated to their craft, giving their best to each scene. It was interesting to see how they perceived their scenes, their characters. I have internalised the learnings and kept them with me,” Mrunal added.

He has a long list of the kind of films he wants to do, but he is reconciled to the fact that “my life and my career keep surprising me with different kinds of roles.” He added: “I am now leaving it up to each day as it comes. I’m definitely not restricting myself to a few roles. I’m exploring whatever comes to me. I’m trying to see new dimensions in each role and how my career will be shaped by that role. I just want to go with the flow.”

CLOSE-IN: Reality check for Indian cricket

0

The defeat against Pakistan and New Zealand in the T20 cricket World Cup has brought about a reality check for Indian cricket. The disappointment was more in the minds of the millions of Indian cricket followers, who had been made to think that Indian cricket was better than it’s ever been before. The superstars who adorn the Indian colours are professionals who are fitter and more skillful than the Indian cricketers of yore.

The Indian economy, a decade ago, went through the same euphoria of “India shining” and a feeling that intellectually we are the rising brains who will shortly control the world. A positive approach and attitude is great to get one to believe in themselves. However, to understand one’s ability and capability is what finally prevails in order to be successful.

Sunil Gavaskar, Sachin Tendulkar, Ravi Shastri, Dilip Vengsarkar, Mohinder Amarnath and loads of former cricketers were successful not because they could play all the shots in the book but because they knew when to do so. In cricket, the ability to apply ones game to the prevailing conditions and to play accordingly is half the battle won. The basis to do so is naturally for the team’s benefit and this is an area where, one feels, the present Indian cricketers are lacking.

A cricketer reaches the highest level by sheer cricketing common sense. Similarly, as in all the other professions, a cricketer acquires or is born with a natural cricketing instinct, based on their experiences and capabilities. The great Garry Sobers, Kapil Dev, Ian Botham, Vinoo Mankad may not have got a distinction as students in academics but on the cricket field they were masters in the way they thought and analysed the situation. Their “cricketing brains” was what made them match winners. One feels that the element of thinking for themselves seems to have disappeared in most of the present-day cricketers.

One can blame it on the progress made by technology, technical tools and professional, certified and accomplished coaches who draw up plans to implement the strategy. However, one feels that many cricketers are getting confused between their natural thought process and the roles that have been assigned to them.

The Indian cricketers seem to be prime examples of this. They have played some wonderful cricket in the last few years. However, they have succumbed to pressure when most required and especially in an ICC-organised World championship. The burden of responsibility of winning a major cup seems to weigh on the Indian cricketers to such an extent that their eagerness and anxiety is driving them to despair.

An Indian cricketer at present is a well-paid professional. Most of them have a rags-to-riches tale to relay. This, one feels, makes them an easy target for the famous corporate jargon “value for money” and millions of their fans and followers expect them to live up to it. The hopes and wishes of the fan following puts on additional pressure on the cricketer who understands the bricks-bats and scrutiny they would receive if they fail.

India’s defeat against Pakistan was a deadly blow to the team’s morale. A billion Indians see this not as a sport but as a battle of supremacy. The attack on Md. Shami for his below-par performance in the match was another of the immature reactions that one sees every time an Indian cricket team fails. One hoped that the Indian side would have been strong enough to put themselves mentally past the loss and the criticism. Unfortunately, each one of them was deeply affected by it and one could feel the tension and uncertainty when they took to the field to bat and bowl against New Zealand.

Cricket is very much of a mind game and with New Zealand taking the early initiative, the Indian team looked like a side that had got lost in a maze.

India does still stand a mathematical chance of qualifying for the semifinals but that would depend solely on them winning against Scotland and Namibia by a large margin and New Zealand losing their match against Afghanistan.

The regular Indian defeats on a world cup platform in the last seven years remind one of the stigma that got attached to the South African side of being “chokers”. India are showing signs of this symptom especially in the way their giant superstar batters seem to collapse when most required.

The perennial question which is being asked by one and all is, “What went wrong with the Indian side”?

India boasts of being able to field three International sides and have the world’s leading batters and bowlers, hence it could not be the quality and skills of their players.

Was it the six months of being away from home, playing cricket and living in a bio-bubble that made them homesick and depressed? The claustrophobic atmosphere of being day and night with each other?

The appointment of MS Dhoni as a mentor? This could have been seen as a message that the BCCI were not happy with the existing think-tank.

Was it the timing of Virat Kohli’s announcement of stepping down from the T20 Indian captaincy after the World Cup, as well as the coach and support staff stepping down?

Was it the selection of the playing eleven? This is always a point to ponder over when a team loses. However, the combination could always be debatable. One never knows.

All this could have had a significant effect in the dressing room.

Diwali is an Indian festival which also symbolises the victory of light over darkness. The Indian team requires all the blessings and prayers to give them that light of hope.

In T20 cricket one never knows till the last ball is bowled!
