Big jolt for Barca as Sergio Aguero out for three months with possible heart complaint

0

FC Barcelona have confirmed that striker Sergio Aguero will be out of action for at least three months as they try to determine the cause of the irregular heartbeat which saw him forced out of the 1-1 draw at home to Alaves on October 30.

Aguero suffered a dizzy spell during the game and had to lie on the pitch holding his chest as medical staff gave him treatment before leaving the pitch. The striker was taken to hospital, where he spent two nights.

“The first team player Sergio Aguero has been subjected to a diagnostic and therapeutic process by Dr. Josep Brugada. He is unavailable for selection and during the next three months the effectiveness of treatment will be evaluated in order to determine his recovery process,” reported the FC Barcelona website on Monday evening.

The news is a huge blow to the former Atletico Madrid player, who joined Barca on a free transfer from Manchester City during the summer and had recently made his first-team debut after missing the first 10 weeks of the campaign with a knee injury.

He has so far managed just 150 minutes of first-team action, scoring his first goal in Barca’s 2-1 defeat to Real Madrid on October 24.

The world of football has become especially careful of possible cardiac problems, which was highlighted by the cardiac arrest suffered by Denmark international midfielder Christian Ericksen during this summer’s European Championships.

Big, bold announcement by Modi at COP26, net zero goal by 2070

Offering a new mantra and raising its pledge for combating climate change, Prime Minister Narendra Modi told world leaders at the COP26 that India will target a net zero goal by the year 2070 and aim at increasing its non-fossil fuel energy to 500 GW in its energy mix by 2030.

Terming it as ‘Panchamrut Ki Saugat’ – India’s contribution to climate action called as Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs), Modi while speaking on the first day of the high-level segment at the COP26 said India will reduce its carbon intensity by 45 per cent by 2030 starting with reducing projected carbon emission from now till 2030 by 1 billion tonne and committed to have renewable energy component of 50 per cent by 2030.

Modi gave a new mantra for sustainable development through sustainable lifestyle. Displaying his penchant for acronyms, Modi said ‘One Word One World’ movement mantra — ‘Life, Lifestyle for Environment’ can be a mass movement wherein instead of mindless and destructive consumption, there should be mindful and deliberate utilisation.

India’s earlier target was to reduce the emissions intensity of its GDP by 33-35 per cent by 2030, compared to 2005 levels with already 24 per cent achieved by 2016. Ahead of the COP, India was under pressure from rich nations to declare a net zero target year — where the amount of carbon emitted needs to be balanced with either removal or absorption of equal amount — but had declared that it will be done at an appropriate movement.

The west has always painted India as the third largest emitter after China and the US while India has maintained its per capita emissions are nowhere near the highest emitters.

However, Foreign Secretary Harsh Vardhan Shringla, addressing media after the day’s events here denied there was any outside pressure.

“It is for the posterity we are making this effort. It is an important commitment to our future generations. Net zero for India will mean the shortest gap from here and the peak emissions. The leader of a country that sets a target of 175 GW, he sets his own target of 450 GW and now sets a target of 500 GW progressively is not doing it under any pressure. The only pressure on him is the pressure of humanity, the pressure of our own future.”

“India is not going to be pressurised; will not be pressurised and has never been pressurised in any way. We are doing it of our own volition. The projections are based on science,” he said.

Modi called out promises made by rich nations till date have been hollow, and said, “Just like India has raised its ambition, the rich nations, too, need to raise theirs. Climate finance and technology transfer agreements cannot remain the same.”

He exhorted the rich nations to enhance to 1 trillion US$ for climate finance and low-cost technology transfer and said it is needed to track climate finance.

Taking cudgels on behalf of the developing world, Modi appealed to all nations to take bolder steps.

This COP26 is deemed critical because as warned by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), every additional 0.5 degree of warming will increase heat extremes, extreme precipitation, and droughts and for coastal areas, sea level rise will be a threat to their very existence.

Before the COP, India had announced adaptation was one of the important aspects for consideration. Accordingly, speaking at a side event, the Prime Minister said adaptation, not mitigation, should get priority for the development imperative of developing countries.

“Adaptation does not get as much importance in the Global climate debate as mitigation. This is an injustice to developing countries, which are more affected by climate change,” Modi said at the event on ‘Action and Solidarity — The Critical Decade’ at COP26 Summit.

Modi held a bilateral meeting with the British Prime Minister Boris Johnson where the two leaders reviewed the implementation of the ‘Roadmap 2030’ priorities, particularly in trade and economy, people-to-people, health, defence, and security areas. They expressed satisfaction at the progress in delivering the enhanced trade partnership, including steps taken towards the launch of free trade agreement negotiations.

He reiterated India’s commitment to closely work with the UK on climate finance, technology, innovation and adaptation of green hydrogen, renewables and clean technologies, including joint initiatives under International Solar Alliance (ISA) and Coalition of Disaster Resilient Infrastructure (CDRI).

Kejriwal dares Cong to give 40% tickets to women in Goa, Punjab

The Congress is offering 40 per cent reservation in tickets to women in the Uttar Pradesh assembly polls, because the party knows that it would not come to power in the politically crucial state anyway, Delhi Chief Minister and AAP national convener Arvind Kejriwal said here on Monday.

Kejriwal also dared Congress to offer a similar quota in assembly tickets in other poll-bound states like Punjab and Goa.

“If you are sincere, why is this being done only in UP, are women in Goa any lesser? Give 40 per cent tickets to women in Punjab and Goa too. They (Congress) are offering it in UP, because they know they won’t come to power,” Kejriwal told a press conference in Panaji.

“We urge them not to politicise or perform a drama around it (women’s reservation of seats law). If you want to give reservation to women, come with a bill in Parliament, our party will be the first to support 33 per cent reservation for women,” Kejriwal said.

After Australia, 5 more countries recognise India’s Covaxin

0

After Australia recognised Bharat Biotech’s Covaxin for allowing entry of travellers who had received the vaccine, five more countries on Monday recognised India’s vaccine certificate. These five countries recognised both Covaxin and Covishield.

The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) said that five more countries have recognised India’s vaccination certificate, including Estonia, Kyrgyzstan, State of Palestine, Mauritius and Mongolia.

In a tweet in the evening, MEA spokesperson Arindam Bagchi said, “Mutual recognition of Covid-19 vaccination certificates continues! Five more recognitions for India’s vaccination certificate, including from Estonia, Kyrgyzstan, State of Palestine, Mauritius and Mongolia.”

Earlier, in the day Australia recognised Bharat Biotech’s Covaxin along with Covishield for allowing entry of travellers who had received the vaccine. The Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA), the Australian drug regulator, announced that it has recognised two more Covid-19 vaccines not registered in Australia but used widely internationally, which includes Bharat Biotech’s Covaxin and BBIBP-CorV (manufactured by Sinopharm, China).

The TGA further stated that with recognition of Covaxin, and BBIBP-CorV, along with the previously announced recognition of Coronavac (manufactured by Sinovac, China) and Covishield (manufactured by AstraZeneca), means many citizens of India and China as well as other countries in the region where these vaccines have been widely deployed will now be considered fully vaccinated on entry to Australia.

The TGA stated that this will have significant impact for the return of international students, and travel of skilled and unskilled workers to Australia.

“This recognition is for travellers aged 12 and over who have been vaccinated with Covaxin, and those 18 to 60 who have been vaccinated with BBIBP-CorV,” the TGA said in a statement.

The TGA mentioned that in recent weeks it has obtained additional information demonstrating these vaccines provide protection and potentially reduce the likelihood that an incoming traveller would transmit Covid-19 infection to others while in Australia or become acutely unwell due to Covid-19. “The supporting information has been provided to the TGA from the vaccine sponsor and or the World Health Organisation (WHO),” it said.

In addition, with input from the TGA, Australian Technical Advisory Group on Immunisation (ATAGI) (ATAGI) have determined that those who have received two doses of a TGA-approved or recognised vaccine at least 14 days apart are regarded as fully vaccinated from seven days after the second dose (with the exception of Janssen vaccine, where they are regarded as fully vaccinated seven days after the single dose). This includes homologous (two doses of the same vaccine) and heterologous (two doses of two different TGA-approved or recognised vaccines) schedules.

“From 1 November 2021, vaccinated Australians and permanent residents aged 12 and over may depart Australia without the need to seek a travel exemption,” the statement added.

Sunny Leone becomes the first Indian actress to mint NFT

Actress Sunny Leone ventured into the NFT (non-fungible token) space after she made an announcement to enter the marketplace following in the footsteps of megastars Amitabh Bachchan and Rajinikanth.

And now, racing ahead, Sunny has gone on to mint her NFTs. Minting is a process through which digital art becomes a part of the Ethereum blockchain – a public ledger that is unchangeable and tamper-proof.

International celebrities such as Ellen Degeneres, Paris Hilton, and Lindsay Lohan have previously ventured into NFT as crypto currency has become a global rage and Sunny’s minting has surely taken the Indian crypto enthusiasts by storm. The actress announced her first collectible on Twitter as she tweeted, “MEET the MISFTIZ ! This is misfitz HONEY! She loves the color pink…boys with tattoos…and then eats them for lunch. What the world has been waiting for!!! #SUNNYLEONENFT collectibles. Check them all out on http://Sunnyleonenft.com (sic.)”

The actress took the lead among Indian actors to secure their digital assets when she broke the news about her association with NFT, two months back. This made her the first Indian actress to roll out her own NFTs.

Talking about the collectible, an excited Sunny says, “This was a private sale and it sold out immediately. I am beyond excited about the hype behind my collection and the support from the community. In many ways, I am myself a misfit so there wasn’t anything that’s more appropriate than this collection.”

Talking about how she views crypto, the actress said, “I really believe crypto is the future of the world and NFTs give me an opportunity to express myself with art. Now we are beyond excited for the public sale to start in a few days.”

For her NFTs, Sunny has partnered with Mintdropz, as speaking on her association, she said, “With Mintdropz, we are creating new ways to connect with my audience and deliver varied experiences to engage with my audience that other platforms just can’t provide.”

T20 World Cup: Kapil Dev takes Kohli to task for ‘weak statement’ after NZ defeat

0

The 1983 World Cup-winning captain Kapil Dev has called Virat Kohli’s words after India’s eight-wicket loss to New Zealand in the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup as ‘a very weak statement’. Speaking to the host broadcaster during the post-match presentation ceremony, Kohli had said, “To be very honest and brutal upfront, I don’t think we were brave enough with bat or ball.”

This statement hasn’t gone down well with former India skipper Kapil Dev.

“Obviously, for a big player like him, it is a very weak statement. We all know and we believe that he has the hunger and desire to win games for the team. If that is the kind of body language the team has and if that is the kind of thought process the captain has, it is really tough to lift the team’s mood in the dressing room. I felt a little strange hearing those words. He isn’t that kind of a player,” Kapil Dev said on ABP News.

“He is a fighter. I think he got lost in the moment or something. A captain should not say words like ‘we were not brave enough. You are playing for your country and he has the passion. But when you say such words, fingers will definitely be pointed,” added Dev.

Dev called out head coach Ravi Shastri and mentor MS Dhoni to lift the Indian team’s morale after two losses in the ongoing mega event, meaning that India is on the brink of missing the semi-finals. “I would urge my friend Shastri and Dhoni to lift the team in this scenario. It is Dhoni’s job to talk to the players and give them confidence.”

Talking about India’s awful performance against New Zealand, Dev was extremely unhappy with how Kohli & Co. fared. “I don’t have words. How much can we even criticise? A team that claims to have played the IPL and gained practice, when it plays like this, there will be criticism. When you win, no amount of praise is enough, but right now, no amount of criticism is enough because they did not play the kind of cricket expected of them. You fight and lose, we understand. But today there was not a single performance which we can be happy about.”

The 62-year-old concluded by saying ‘hat he wasn’t happy about the fac’ that India’s chances of going into the semi-finals rest on the results of other matches. “If we have to go through based on somebody else’s performance then I don’t like it. If you have to be in the semis, do it on your own merit. I don’t think it is a good idea to place your hopes on anyone else.”

India’s next match in the tournament is against Afghanistan on November 3 in Abu Dhabi.
