T20 WC: Playing India in world events is always exciting, says NZ’s Boult

0

New Zealand pacer Trent Boult believes that playing India in the world events is always an exciting match. He added that his team will be hopeful of making an upset in a crucial Group 2 ‘Super 12’ match of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup against India on Sunday and get them off to winning ways in the rest of the tournament.

Tipped as a virtual do-or-die match in Dubai on Sunday, both India and New Zealand are looking to open their accounts in the tournament and keep themselves in the hunt for a place in the semifinals. New Zealand have the upper hand over India, winning both matches against the 2007 champions across all editions of the men’s T20 World Cup.

“When it comes to these world events, playing India is always an exciting match. The fans and the audience that comes with it is very exciting. Of course, as players, we want to take on the best players and showcase our skills etc. We have had some good memories but really excited about tomorrow night in terms of the style of cricket that we play and try to play in the right spirits with a smile on our face.

“Really look to enjoy the game. We are very excited by the stage we will be on tomorrow night. Hopefully, we can upset and get our campaign on to a winning form and carry on throughout the tournament. Hopefully, it is a good one,” Boult said in the pre-match press conference on Saturday.

Boult was of the opinion that whatever New Zealand will be asked to do after the toss against India, they will look to do the job with aplomb. “Whatever we do first, we have to do extremely well. India brings a lot of challenges with a quality batting lineup. But with the ball, I think we just need to be clear with our options of how to shut these guys down and give them a bigger chase as possible. It’s going to be a good challenge. Our first game in Dubai and the wicket looks pretty good there. Really looking forward to taking them on.”

Boult was hopeful of finding some swing in Dubai in order to replicate what Pakistan left-arm pacer Shaheen Shah Afridi did against India last Sunday. Afridi’s opening burst claimed openers Rohit Sharma and KL Rahul in power-play followed by Virat Kohli in the back-end of the innings, setting the base for a resounding 10-wicket victory for Pakistan’s first ever men’s T20 World Cup win over India in Dubai.

“I thought the way Shaheen bowled the other night was amazing. But there are some amazing quality batsmen in the Indian batting line-up. Early wickets are definitely a focus for us as a bowling group. We just need to be nice and clear and accurate when we try to put the ball. Hopefully, from my point of view, it swings around a little bit and I can do what Shaheen did the other night,” signed off the 32-year-old.

Telugu actor Balakrishna, dancing star Prabhudeva pay last respects to Puneeth

Telugu super star Nandamuri Balakrishna and choreographer/filmmaker Prabhudeva arrived in Bengaluru on Saturday and paid their last respects to Kannada actor Puneeth Rajkumar, who passed away at the age of 46 due to a cardiac arrest.

Balakrishna stated that, though he and Puneeth were born to different mothers they were like brothers.

“I am pained that I lost a friend, brother. He used to attend all programmes that invited him. He had donated his eyes. We have met many times at Lepakshi along with Shivrajkumar, his elder brother. He had entertained people as an artiste,” he explained.

“Puneeth will live eternally in our hearts,” he said.

Balakrishna wept while paying his last respects and also consoled Shivarajkumar, Puneeth’s elder brother.

Meanwhile, Prabhudeva said that Puneeth was too young to die.

“He is a gem of a person. I recently shot a song for him. My father was in tears after hearing about the news of Puneeth’s death. He wondered whether it was true,” he added.

The late actor will be cremated on Saturday evening here with full state honour.

Puneeth, son of Kannada film legend Dr Rajkumar, passed away on Friday. His body has been kept at Kanteerava Stadium for his fans to pay their last respects.

Aryan Khan walks out of jail

Ending a 29-day long vigil, Aryan Khan, son of Bollywood megastar Shah Rukh Khan and his producer wife Gauri, finally walked out of the Arthur Road Central Jail (ARCJ) here on Saturday.

With thousands of fans, admirers, a huge posse of police and mediapersons camping here for the second day, Aryan’s much-anticipated exit out of the ARCJ to the waiting vehicle lasted barely a couple of seconds.

All that the waiting crowds managed to grab was a glimpse of Aryan sporting a bright blue shirt with his stark mane visible, but face covered by a dark mask as he stepped inside the car without looking around.

Whisked off by a bevy of bouncers and bodyguards to the white SUV with dark glasses on all sides, Aryan was immediately driven toward his Bandra home via the Bandra-Worli Sea Link.

At least 100 metres ahead of his Arabian Sea-facing bungalow, fans had organised a band of drums which started playing furiously on seeing his vehicle, some admirers began dancing with joy, others waved banners and posters with pictures of the father-son actor duo, followed by a burst of loud fire-crackers, signalling the arrival of Diwali at the megastar’s residence, ‘Mannat’.

Aryan reached well in time for a piping-hot home-cooked lunch, 29 days after he left ‘Mannat’ on October 2 for the fun-filled Mumbai-Goa luxury cruise which ended in an unexpected jail sojourn.

Earlier in the day, Shah Rukh Khan sped out in a motorcade to the ARCJ, around 15 km away in Chinchpokli, eager to welcome and hug Aryan.

However, after the ARCJ Superintendent Nitin Waychal told waiting newspersons that Aryan would be out only after another three hours, the actor’s motorcade slowed down and diverted to a five-star hotel en route.

To calm his jumpy nerves and curb his palpable excitement, he waited in the vehicle at the hotel, partook in some light refreshments, all the while hoping for a reunion with his son, who he last met inside the ARCJ on October 21.

The Mumbai Police deployed massive security, barricades and roadblocks at vantage points outside the jail, in the ‘Mannat’ vicinity and on the Bandra-Chinchpokli road to control the jostling fans of both SRK and Aryan, the media hordes and curious onlookers, too.

SS Rajamouli on ‘RRR’: Actors, audiences have risen above language barriers

Veteran Filmmaker SS Rajamouli says that he doesn’t categorise actors or audience based on their language, for him there is just the Indian audience and actors that fit the part.

The filmmaker was interacting with the media on the sidelines of a special collaboration with multiplex chain PVR cinemas. Rajamouli is known for making Telugu cinema and his forthcoming film ‘RRR’ features main-stream Hindi actors such as Ajay Devgn and Alia Bhatt.

When asked about casting on the basis of full inclusion, he said: “I stopped looking at actors as south or north, Hindi or Tamil or Kannada, I have stopped looking at stars like that, and ever before that I’ve stopped looking at audiences in that manner – Hindi, Tamil, Bengali or Malayalam like that, I just look at them as Indian audience. That is something I have been doing for a very long time.”

Releasing multi-starrer mega-budget films in theaters post pandemic is turning into an issue with filmmakers as the cost-recovery is difficult, if not nearly impossible.

With ‘RRR’ gunning for theatrical release, SS Rajamouli believes that one can curb the issue by just making a better product.

“It’s not just the problem of my film, it’s not just the problem of film field, it’s the problem of entire humanity, the pandemic. So there is no scope of sitting and crying about what’s going to happen to me or my film. This is the situation; it is what it is, and how do you make the most out of it, how do we overcome the obstacle, and how to make it exciting for the people to visit theaters and watch it again and again. So you have to make your film much better,” he added.

‘RRR’ starring Jr NTR, Ram Charan, Ajay Devgn and Alia Bhatt, will release in January 2022, and will lock horns at the box-office with ‘Gangubai Kathiawadi’ and ‘Radhe Shyam’.

IPL: Lucknow, Ahmedabad likely to target Warner, Rahul, Iyer and Pandya via draft system

0

The 2022 season of the Indian Premier League (IPL) will be a 10-team affair and the two new inducted teams, Lucknow and Ahmedabad, are likely to target T20 stars — David Warner, KL Rahul, Shreyas Iyer, Hardik Pandya and Surya Kumar Yadav, among others to make a solid team and loyal fan base.

The Lucknow IPL team was bought by RPSG Group for Rs. 7,090 crore, while CVC Capital Partners paid Rs 5,625 cr for the Ahmedabad team.

Though it’s not official yet, the eight existing IPL teams are likely to retain a maximum of four players and the two new franchises will be able to acquire three players from the rest of the player pool via drafts before the 2022 auction. Also, unlike the previous big auction ahead of the 2018 season, there could be no right-to-match cards (RTM) at the auction.

As per ESPNCricinfo, these were among the rules discussed informally this week between the IPL organisers and the franchises.

As far as the three players going to the two new franchises, Lucknow and Ahmedabad, is concerned, the IPL is mulling over a combination of two Indian players and one overseas. However, it is still not clear whether these players will need to be picked strictly from the group of players not retained by the existing franchises, or can be from the larger auction pool — which will have new additions — ahead of the 2022 auction.

If the two new franchises are allowed to pick only from the group of players not retained by the other eight, then a player-draft system is likely to be put in place.

Notably, which cricketers plays for whom could make or break the franchises’ fan base as well as the team combination. And there is a strong possibility of some big names such as David Warner, KL Rahul, Shreyas Iyer, Hardik Pandya, Surya Kumar Yadav and Bhuvneshwar Kumar being up for grabs via drafts this time.

Lucknow:

David Warner:

RPSG Group, who now owns Lucknow, had bought the Pune franchise for two years in 2016. In those two years, they had appointed experienced captains in MS Dhoni and Steve Smith for one year each.

An attacking opener as well as an experienced captain like Warner could be a perfect choice for the owners to lead Lucknow. And, considering the short boundaries and flat pitch of the Ekana Stadium, the Australian could be a sure-shot match-winner for the franchise.

Surya Kumar Yadav:

Rohit Sharma, Jasprit Bumrah and Kieron Pollard will be the three automatic picks for retention for Mumbai Indians. There could be a discussion between Suryakumar Yadav and Ishan Kishan for the fourth slot. With Kishan being the wicketkeeper-batsman and age also on his side, Surya Kumar could be left out of the Mumbai team.

If Surya becomes a free agent, Lucknow owners can convince him to be a part of the franchise. Though he plays for Mumbai in domestic cricket, the batsman’s father belongs to Varanasi, UP. Lucknow can also make him the captain, considering his cool and composed nature as well as his ability to bat at different positions.

Bhuvneshwar Kumar & Suresh Raina: Though Raina and Bhuvi are not in their prime in terms of performance, they are still bankable players, especially in Indian conditions and the IPL. Raina has been an IPL legend and all his success has come at the Chennai Super Kings. But, the MS Dhoni-led team is unlikely to retain him this time. On the other hand, SRH is also likely to part ways with Bhuvneshwar considering a dip in his bowling form.

In that case, both Raina and Bhuvi, who belong to UP, can also be seen playing from the home state franchise. Apart from their on-field performance, both can be an asset for the franchise in terms of their fan base, and marketing as locals will have a deep connection with state boys.

Ahmedabad:

Hardik Pandya:

Given his lacklustre performance and fitness concern, all-rounder Hardik Pandya is likely to be sent back into the IPL auction pool by Mumbai Indians. In that case, Ahmedabad owners can latch onto the opportunity and bring Pandya in their team.

Hardik, a Gujarat boy, will bring all the flamboyance, his all-rounder ability and a lot of eye-balls for the franchise as well.

Shreyas Iyer:

The Gujarat-based franchise will need a captain to lead and they may approach and target Shreyas Iyer for that role. Iyer is unlikely to be a part of the Delhi Capitals set-up in IPL 2022 and a young talented India batter and captain will be a perfect billing for Ahmedabad. Notably, Iyer led Delhi to the play-offs twice, including its maiden final appearance during the 2020 season.

KL Rahul:

Rahul was sensational for Punjab Kings in IPL 2021, finishing as its highest run-scorer. Despite his dominating performance with the bat, he has failed to lead the side to playoffs since taking the captaincy role. As of now, there is no clarity if he would be retained by the side. If Rahul is not retained by Punjab then Ahmedabad can approach and convince the star opener to play for their franchise.

Tech giant Google is unable to meet the Pixel 6 Pro demand and seems to be running low inventory, resorting to waitlists that notify about the phone’s availability, media reports say.

According to GizmoChina, a new banner has now been put into place atop the Pixel 6 Pro page on the Google Store website.

“Due to high demand, some Pixel 6 Pro models may be out of stock or have long delivery times,” it reads.

“Get notified when they’re back in stock, or check out other authorised retailers who may have them available,” it added.

Underneath the banner, you get a couple of buttons, one of which is for joining the waitlist and the other to see other retailers you can try to get the phone from instead.

The Verge reported that the stock isn’t completely depleted though. Certain variants and colour options of the phone do come in stock from time to time.

“The banner on the Pro page on the Google Store is still accurate – some models of the Pro are out of stock,” the company said in a statement to The Verge.

“While we work to make more available, customers can check out our authorised partners nationwide while supplies last,” it added.

This month, Google unveiled the Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro with Tensor chipset to improve AI functionalities.

Pixel 6, which starts at $599 and the Pixel 6 Pro at $899.

The Pixel 6 Pro comes in three colours — white, black and light gold. Pixel 6 has black, red and blue options.
