Covid virus can infect inner ear, affect hearing, balance: Study

0

SARS-CoV-2, a virus that causes Covid-19, can infect cells of the inner ear including hair cells, which are critical for both hearing and balance, finds a study.

Many Covid-19 patients have reported symptoms affecting the ears, including hearing loss and tinnitus. Dizziness and balance problems can also occur, suggesting that the SARS-CoV-2 virus may be able to infect the inner ear.

While this study strongly suggests that Covid can cause auditory and balance problems, the overall percentage of Covid patients who have experienced ear-related issues is not known, said the team led by Massachusetts Institute of Technology researchers.

For the study, published in the journal Communications Medicine, the team created cellular models by taking human skin cells and transforming them into induced pluripotent stem cells. Then, they were able to stimulate those cells to differentiate into several types of cells found in the inner ear: hair cells, supporting cells, nerve fibers, and Schwann cells, which insulate neurons.

In addition, the researchers were also able to obtain samples of inner ear tissue, which when combined with the stem-cell-derived cellular models, showed that certain types of cells — hair cells and Schwann cells — express the proteins that are needed for the SARS-CoV-2 virus to enter the cells.

These proteins include the ACE2 receptor, which is found on cell surfaces, and two enzymes called furin and transmembrane protease serine 2, which help the virus to fuse with the host cell, said Lee Gehrke, Professor in MIT’s Institute for Medical Engineering and Science.

The researchers then showed that the virus can actually infect the inner ear, specifically the hair cells and, to a lesser degree, Schwann cells. They found that the other cell types in their models were not susceptible to SARS-CoV-2 infection.

The human hair cells that the researchers studied were vestibular hair cells, which are involved in sensing head motion and maintaining balance. Cochlear hair cells, which are involved in hearing, are much harder to obtain or generate in a cellular model. However, the researchers showed that cochlear hair cells from mice also have proteins that allow SARS-CoV-2 entry.

The pattern of infection that the researchers found in their tissue samples appears to correspond to the symptoms observed in a group of 10 Covid-19 patients who reported ear-related symptoms following their infection. Nine of these patients suffered from tinnitus, six experienced vertigo, and all experienced mild to profound hearing loss.

Damage to cochlear hair cells, which can cause hearing loss, is usually evaluated by measuring otoacoustic emissions — sounds given off by sensory hair cells as they respond to auditory stimulation. Among the six Covid-19 patients in the study who underwent this testing, all had reduced or absent otoacoustic emissions.

Premier League: Liverpool hope to continue winning momentum

0

A week after thrashing arch-rivals Manchester United 5-0 at home and a few days before their midweek Champions League clash with Atletico Madrid on Wednesday, former champions Liverpool take on Brighton at Anfield on Saturday, with a chance of taking the top spot in the English Premier League.

Liverpool are currently on 21 points from nine matches, just a point behind Chelsea with defending champions Manchester City (20) a further point behind in what is promising to develop into another tight race for the Premier League title. Liverpool has been unbeaten in the league so far and looking good to continue the run.

The Reds have been playing a superb brand of football and looking good to challenge for all four titles this season and have a squad that could sustain the pressure of putting up a strong squad in all competitions despite the busy schedule.

However, they have some injury concerns and on Friday in the pre-match press conference, manager Juergen Klopp had mixed news to offer — midfielder Naby Keita, who was felled by Paul Pogba with a strong challenge last Sunday, is fit to play while Fabiano and Thiago Alcantara are still unavailable.

“Naby Keita looks good, he was obviously lucky (in the challenge that Paul Pogba was sent off for last weekend), so I think he will be ready. Fabinho doesn’t look that good, it’s a bit more complicated… he wasn’t in team training yet, so that’s never a good sign. Thiago (Alcantara) did team training for the first time yesterday, he did most of the session, but that doesn’t mean he’s ready to play,” said Klopp.

The Reds may have some unfinished business to settle as Brighton had beaten them in the same fixture last season and Klopp said they are a dangerous side going by their recent performances. Though Brighton lost to Manchester City on Sunday and to Leicester City in the League Cup on penalties on Thursday, they are a tough side and capable of causing trouble for any side.

“We know what they are capable of… in the second half (against Manchester City), they were incredible, the way they kept the ball, it’s not easy to do that against City [so] we have to be really good. This is not a game where you dominate an opponent, they will have their moments … we have to run a lot, we have to close gaps. It will be a tough one, but I’m looking forward to it,” Klopp said.

In other matches over the weekend, table toppers Chelsea face Newcastle United in London, Manchester City will host Crystal Palace while Arsenal will travel to Leicester on Saturday. Also on Saturday, Burnley will meet Brentford while Watford will take on Southampton.

On Sunday, Manchester United will hope to pick up the pieces from last week’s disaster against Liverpool when they meet Tottenham Hotspur in a clash between two teams trying to get into the top five and in contention for European action. In other matches, fourth-placed West Ham will hope to maintain their superb run when they take on Aston Villa at home while bottom-placed Norwich City take on Leeds United and Wolverhampton meet Everton in a late crash.

La Liga: Challenging games this weekend for Barca, Atletico

0

Sergi Barjuan’s debut as FC Barcelona coach, a tough game between Sevilla and Osasuna, Valencia against Villarreal, and the Basque derby between La Liga leaders Real Sociedad and local rivals Athletic Bilbao are some of the matches to look up to in Spain this weekend.

With the top clubs set for European action next week, Barcelona, Atletico, and Real Madrid will hope for morale-boosting results in the domestic league.

Real start the weekend when they visit Elche, who have slipped to 15th in the table after taking just one point from the last three games, while Carlo Ancelotti’s men look to be happier playing away from home where they can best make use of their counter-attacking game.

Wednesday saw Valencia being thrashed 4-1 away to Real Betis to extend their run of games without a win to seven, and Jose Bordalas’ men face a tough local derby at home to Villarreal.

The visitors are not in their best form after losing in Bilbao and drawing 3-3 at home to Cadiz, but even without the injured Juan Foyth and Gerard Moreno, coach Unai Emery expects a happy return to the Mestalla to further deepen the problems at his former club.

Osasuna’s 0-0 draw at the Santiago Bernabeu in midweek showed they have to be taken very seriously indeed as they visit third-placed Sevilla, reports Xinhua.

Only VAR ruling out Lucas Ocampos’ late goal stopped Sevilla from going top of the table for 24 hours on Wednesday, and this looks set to be a bone-crunching game between two teams that don’t hold back.

Osasuna may be confident of taking something from the Sanchez Pizjuan against a rival that sometimes doesn’t score enough goals, and the side from Pamplona will again use a five-man defense.

FC Barcelona B-team coach Sergi Barjuan was put in temporary charge of the first team on Thursday after Ronald Koeman was sacked in the wake of their defeat to Rayo Vallecano, and all eyes will be on Barca’s performance at home to Alaves.

Sergi has to try and lift the morale of a team that lacks cohesion in attack and defense, and Barca’s display under a new man in the dugout will show if their problems are structural or down to Koeman.

Sunday kicks off with Cadiz at home to Real Mallorca, with the home side needing points to climb out of the bottom three, but without midweek hat-trick hero ‘Choco’ Lozano.

Real Betis travel to the Wanda Metropolitano Stadium after a run of three straight wins that have lifted them to fourth in the table. They face an Atletico Madrid side whose recent form has failed to convince, as they uncharacteristically twice surrendered a lead away to Levante on Thursday night.

Bottom side Getafe continues to look for their first win of the season in a home game against Espanyol that sees coach Quique Sanchez Flores face one of his former clubs. Espanyol are without striker Raul de Tomas who is suspended after his red card against Athletic Bilbao on Tuesday.

Athletic make the short trip to San Sebastian to face league leaders Real Sociedad in a Basque derby. Real Sociedad won 2-0 away to Celta Vigo on Thursday with Alexander Isak in fine form, and they will hope Mikel Oyarzabal can play some part in the game.

Athletic have lost just one game this season and will bring former Real Sociedad defender Inigo Martinez back for the injured Dani Vivian for a game that will be played at a packed Anoeta Stadium, where they will hope to take advantage of fresher legs after 48 hours’ more recovery time than their rivals.

There are two games on Monday with in-form Rayo Vallecano at home to Celta Vigo, while there is a relegation battle as Levante look for their first win of the season at home to fourth from bottom Granada.

Kannada star Puneeth’s last rites on Oct 30, condolences pour in

Popular Kannada film star Puneeth Rajkumar’s last rites will be held on Saturday after the return of his elder daughter Vanditha from the US.

Karnataka Revenue Minister R. Ashok stated that the actor’s last rites will be conducted with government honours.

His mortal remains were taken to his residence from the hospital. Later, his body will be kept at Kanteerava stadium in Bengaluru after 6.30 p.m. for final viewing till late Saturday evening.

Raghavendra Rajkumar, elder brother of Puneeth, said that his younger sibling took him to hospital when he had suffered heart attack twice earlier. “He got the pacemaker for me. He brought me back from the hospital safely. But I could not bring him back. He went to see my parents,” he said.

Raghavendra Rajkumar stated that nothing has been decided yet on the last rites.

“Puneeth’s spouse is inconsolable and not in a position to talk. We will decide after discussion with all relatives. We have requested to make arrangements for public ‘darshan’. We all know what happened at the time of the death of our father (Kannada film legend Rajkumar) (Seven people were shot dead in the large-scale violence that followed after his death) That should not happen,” he stated.

Dr Ranganath Nayak who treated Puneeth, explained that he developed chest pain after two hours of workout at a gym. He has consulted a family doctor and undergone ECG test.

“When, ECG results showed his condition was serious he was referred to our hospital. En route to hospital he suffered a massive cardiac arrest. When he was brought to hospital, there was no cardiac activity,” he explained.

He further stated that the doctors tried to resuscitate Puneeth for three hours. “We have made all attempts to revive cardiac activity, but he could not be revived,” he said.

Meanwhile, shocked by the untimely death of Puneeth, cricketers and Telugu film stars have expressed their condolences. Yash and other Sandalwood stars rushed to Puneeth’s residence to console his family.

Karnataka Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai appealed for peace, and maintenance of law and order in the state. “Puneeth’s last rites will be held as per wishes of the family at their choice of place. We all should pay respects peacefully,” he said.

“I spoke to him yesterday (Thursday) regarding launching his website,” he remembered.

Chief Minister Bommai has also cancelled all his programmes for Friday and Saturday.

State Congress President D.K. Shivakumar stated that he knew Puneeth since childhood. “He was a good friend. Puneeth absolutely had no bad habits. He had no greed. Even though I have tried to pull him into certain habits he declined. He was totally determined and did not budge an inch,” he said.

Bengaluru South MP Tejaswi Soorya stated that Puneeth was a fitness freak, saying “His videos of workouts during the lockdown period served as an inspiration for all of us.”

Cricketers Anil Kumble, Harbhajan Singh, Virender Sehwag, Venkatesh Prasad, and Telugu film stars Chiranjeevi, Balakrishna, Junior NTR, Pavan Kalyan and Mahesh Babu also expressed their condolences.

Google announces new features for user’s safety, security

0

Tech giant Google has announced that its Locked Folder feature — a passcode-protected space — is coming to Google Photos on Android and iOS devices soon.

The company said that users should be able to choose the privacy settings that are right for them, with controls that are easy to use and understand.

“Back in May, our Photos team introduced Locked Folder on Pixel – a passcode-protected space where you can save photos and videos separately, so they won’t show up as you scroll through Google Photos or any other apps on your device,” the company said in a blog post.

“We are excited to share that this feature is coming to Google Photos on Android soon, and to iOS early next year,” it added.

Google said it has also introduced Auto-Delete options and created controls that appear in context when users are using the company’s products.

“At Google, we keep more people safe online than anyone else with products that are secure by default, private by design and put you in control of your data,” the company said.

To celebrate Cybersecurity Awareness Month, Google also introduced new features and technologies that keep data private and secure.

The Security Hub brings all security-related features and settings into one place on the Pixel device.

“In the hub, you’ll see a clear red, yellow, or green indication of whether your system is secure based on inputs from Google Play Protect to your Google Account,” Google said.

“If there’s something wrong, the Hub will give you straightforward recommendations of what’s wrong and what to do next,” it added.

This feature is currently only available on Pixel devices, but the company plans to roll this out to Google’s entire ecosystem in the future.

The company also said that on top of built-in VPN and spam blocking features included in all phone plans, Google Fi is introducing end-to-end encrypted calls.

“One-to-one calls between Android phones on Fi will be secured with end-to-end encryption by default when they become available in the coming weeks, so your phone conversations stay between you and the person you’re talking to,” it said.

West Indies’ T20 dominance is over; this is Pakistan and England’s era: Swann

0

Former England off-spinner Graeme Swann has said that the ongoing edition of the ICC T20 World Cup in the UAE will bring about the “the downfall of West Indies’ T20 era”, and tipped either England or Pakistan to go the distance.

West Indies are the defending champions but despite the presence of big hitters such as Chris Gayle and Kieron Pollard they have struggled, with the Caribbean side coming up with one of their worst T20 performances in recent history, folding up for just 55 runs in their opening T20 World Cup ‘Super 12′ game against England.

“I think it is the downfall of West Indies’ T20 era. Age and experience are one thing but it can get highlighted if you are not winning. I’m not saying that this West Indies team is past it and they are like Pakistan, they could bounce back anytime,” Swann told cricket.com on Friday.

“But they have had two really, really weak performances (against England and South Africa). If you look at their team, the team is wriggled with top-class batsmen from the IPL but they are just not performing. Maybe it is the end of their era. Not sure if it is their T20 World Cup to be honest,” he added.

The former England spinner, who has played 60 Tests and taken more than 250 wickets in the longest version of the game, praised Pakistan and England, saying they were the favourites this year.

“England and Pakistan are favourites. That New Zealand game, I was more nervous about Pakistan because after that India victory, I thought we would see the old Pakistan, who would falter. I honestly thought that they wouldn’t beat New Zealand but I was completely wrong. I think Matt Hayden (Matthew Hayden) has instilled hardness in this team,” Swann said.

Swann also felt that Afghanistan, with a battery of mystery spinners, could cause an upset or two in the tournament.

“Afghanistan’s win over Scotland was amazing. Scotland aren’t quite England’s rivals even though they are closest, although they see England as their rivals. I think a lot of English fans will root for Scotland. It was a bit hard to see them getting destroyed against Afghanistan. It wasn’t their day whatsoever. You forget how strong Afghanistan are. They are more likely to upset teams these days than Bangladesh and Sri Lanka,” added Swann.

Delhi doctors successfully remove stent that migrated to heart

0

Doctors here successfully removed a metallic stent from a 35-year-old’s heart, that migrated there from his liver, in a challenging surgery.

Sanjay Roy developed a large hole inside his aorta, the main artery, as a result of a metal stent that was placed inside a vein in the liver, to treat him for a condition called ‘Budd chiari’ syndrome two years ago.

The metal stent slowly migrated from the liver through the vein into the right side of the heart (called right atrium) and then subsequently ruptured the aorta.

Roy was presented to doctors at Fortis Escorts Heart Institute with severe symptoms of heart failure, deranged liver function, and low platelet count. The right side of his heart became almost like a large football due to the failure of the right side valve and an excessive blood flow to the right heart in a condition called shunt, where blood flows abnormally inside the heart from one chamber to the other.

A team of 12 doctors and paramedics removed the metallic stent that was totally buried inside his vein in the heart in a surgery that lasted almost 9 hours.

The doctors stopped his heart using a very advanced technique and then cut the metallic stent, even as his aortic rupture was closed and his right sided heart valve was repaired, said Dr. Ritwick Raj Bhuyan, Director, Cardiothoracic Vascular Surgery, Fortis Escorts Heart Institute, in a statement.

“It is extremely rare for an IVC stent to cause a ruptured aortic sinus. According to published medical literature, such an incident has not previously occurred,” Bhuyan said.

In general, surgery of this nature has only a 30 per cent chance of survival, as there was a very high risk of heart rupture, uncontrolled bleeding, and liver failure after surgery.

But, Roy was discharged within 2 week of operation and also resumed his normal activities. As he had deranged liver and heart function, he will need cardiac rehabilitation for at least three months and must abstain from alcohol, smoking, and drink only moderate amounts of fluid, Bhuyan said.

Twitter to let its Blue subscribers try new features early

0

Micro-blogging site Twitter has announced that subscribers to its paid Twitter Blue service will get early access to some new features under a new Labs banner.

According to The Verge, Twitter regularly tests new features ahead of their official rollout, but now, the company is creating a new way for some people to check out new features before everyone else.

Features in Twitter’s programme include pinned conversations on iOS, which lets you pin DM conversations to the top of the list, and the ability to post longer video uploads from a desktop computer.

Users can read more about Labs in a thread from the Twitter Blue account.

They can only subscribe to Twitter Blue if they are on iOS and live in Canada and Australia, so Labs features aren’t widely accessible just yet, the report said.

Twitter promises that Labs will be available in more countries soon, though, and the company said on its website that Blue will be available in additional regions and on Android and the web “in the near future”.

Why name change won’t erase systemic issues plaguing Facebook

0

The consumers largely remain neutral about Facebook becoming a metaverse company and if it continues to struggle in curbing issues around fake news, extremist content, consumer privacy and teen safety, then the same issues will fast follow Facebook into the metaverse, industry experts said on Friday.

Facebook continues to battle serious allegations led by whistleblower Frances Haugen and others over users’ data privacy and presence of misinformation on its platforms.

According to global market research firm Forrester, to counter the accusations, Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg has emphasised the company’s commitment to help bring the metaverse (as the next computing platform) to life, indicating that it would be “a major part of” Facebook’s investment going forward.

“While it’ll help alleviate confusion by distinguishing Facebook’s parent company from its founding app, a name change doesn’t suddenly erase the systemic issues plaguing the company, said Forrester VP and Research Director Mike Proulx.

“If Meta doesn’t address its issues beyond a defensive and superficial attitude, those same issues will occupy the metaverse,” he said in a statement.

Forrester has found that less than half (41 per cent) of online adults surveyed in the US say they trust Facebook (the company). In the UK, it’s just 26 per cent.

Nearly 88 per cent agreed that Facebook should first address its core reputation issues before changing its company name.

Facebook and Instagram are also fast losing millennials and Gen Z as users.

The social network now plans to spend at least $10 billion on metaverse-related projects this year and is changing its financial reporting to separate revenue between Facebook Reality Labs and its family of apps.

The metaverse will be a social, 3D virtual space where you can share immersive experiences with other people, even when you can’t be together in person – and do things together you couldn’t do in the physical world.

Amid its Meta plans, over half of US online adults (and nearly half of UK online adults) want to see Facebook permanently add “read before sharing” prompts to mitigate the spread of misinformation.

They also want Facebook to remove algorithmic ranking of posts and go back to chronological newsfeeds.

“Nearly half of US online adults and a third of UK online adults want Facebook to replace its executive leadership. Similarly, 43 per cent in the US and 36 per cent in the UK want the government to force Facebook to break up into separate companies for each of its apps (Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp, Oculus VR, etc.),” the Forerster survey showed.

The metaverse won’t fix Facebook and it must fix itself or be forced to change by several stakeholders responsible for solving the mounting issues surrounding the company: consumers, parents, regulators, and the marketing community, the report mentioned.
