The Yogi Adityanath government in Uttar Pradesh has declared Soron in Kasganj district as a place of pilgrimage.

The Chief Minister said that by declaring Soron a pilgrimage site, the ancient and sacred sites located in the area will be protected and smaller places of worship will be revived.

The move, said a government spokesperson, will also benefit Charkateerth, Yogteerth, Suryateerth, Somteerth and Sakotakteerth in the area.

Along with protection to the religious sites, locals of Soron will also benefit and get new avenues of employment.

“Soron is a site associated with Lord Barah. It finds mention in several Puranas. It is believed that it is the place where Lord Vishnu’s third avatar, Lord Barah, took nirvana,” said the spokesperson.

He said that by declaring Soron the pilgrimage site, its historical places would also be preserved.

Apple posts nearly $100 bn in profits for its fiscal year

Apple has posted a robust September quarter revenue at $83.4 billion, up 29 per cent from last year, despite larger-than-expected supply constraints, the company announced.

The company reported $366 billion of revenue for its fiscal year, which represents a 33 per cent annual growth, and a record 12-month profit nearing $100 billion.

For the September quarter (Q4) alone, the net income was $20.6 billion.

“This year we launched our most powerful products ever, from M1-powered Macs to an iPhone 13 lineup that is setting a new standard for performance and empowering our customers to create and connect in new ways,” Apple CEO Tim Cook said late on Thursday.

“We are infusing our values into everything we make a” moving closer to our 2030 goal of being carbon neutral up and down our supply chain and across the lifecycle of our products, and ever advancing our mission to build a more equitable future,” he added.

During the September quarter, Apple returned over $24 billion to its shareholders.

“Our record September quarter results capped off a remarkable fiscal year of strong double-digit growth, during which we set new revenue records in all of our geographic segments and product categories in spite of continued uncertainty in the macro environment,” said Luca Maestri, Apple’s CFO.

“The combination of our record sales performance, unmatched customer loyalty, and strength of our ecosystem drove our active installed base of devices to a new all-time high,” he added in a statement.

On the product side, revenue was $65.1 billion, up 30 per cent over a year ago as the company experienced better-than-expected demand for its products despite supply constraints.

“We grew in each of our product categories with an all-time record for Mac and September quarter records for iPhone, for iPad and for Wearables, Home and Accessories,” Apple said.

CLOSE-IN: T20 World Cup — Unlucky 13 and a wake-up call for the Indian side

0

The Indian cricket team’s progress in the T20 World Cup campaign has received a massive jolt. Pakistan, their arch-rival against whom they have never lost a World Cup event previously, finally beat them on the 13th occasion. Unlucky or not, India were beaten comprehensively at a time when the Indian side looked prepared and ready to conquer all their opponents. The dreaded Indian batting and bowling units looked in complete shambles against the skill and capabilities of their Pakistani opponents.

Pakistan seems to be cruising on the way to a semifinal berth after beating New Zealand and now look like firm favourites to win the cup. They have a side that is well represented in all departments of the game.

UAE has been their home venue for quite a while and so their players seem completely at ease with the conditions. The Pakistan side has a good batting outfit, with a world-class batter in Babar Azam and a bowling arsenal of pace and spinners as well. They have also been smart to include Shoaib Malik, the oldest player in the cup, whose experience will be necessary when it comes to crunch situations.

He has already shown his usefulness; when he guided the middle and lower-order Pakistan batsmen in their match against New Zealand.

The defeat for India was definitely a huge wake-up call for the side. Coach Ravi Shastri and the teams mentor, MS Dhoni, have to think out of the box. One feels they do need to infuse a constructive change against New Zealand for their crucial match against them on Sunday.

Hardik Pandya as a pure batter may have the capabilities of playing a blinder at the end of the innings. However, in his present form it is a risky proposition to include him. He may have a very positive attitude towards life in general, but pursuing with him and the out-of-form swing bowler, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, could be detrimental at this juncture.

India, unfortunately, lacks a world-class pace bowling all-rounder and the closest they have to it is Shardul Thakur. His inclusion would give the side an additional batsman and a bowler who seems to somehow have the knack of picking up wickets. He is being seen as the man with a golden arm.

Ravichandran Ashwin, reputed as the world’s premier off-spinner, sitting on the Indian bench is rather questionable. His loads of experience and variations should make him an automatic choice in the Indian team. He did show his usefulness, opening the bowling attack in the warm-up game against Australia and India needs him to bolster the attack.

The other issue that one sees is in the use of India’s leg spinner Varun Chakravarthy, effectively. One feels he should bowl when the ball is relatively new, especially when the shine is on. This will give him that extra bit of nip. The slow pace wickets and a softer ball in the latter part of the innings is giving batters time to adjust their strokes against him, even if they have not read his deliveries correctly.

A six-pronged attack of the above three along with Ravindra Jadeja, Jasprit Bumrah and Md. Shami would be an ideal combination for India.

Apart from Virat Kohli, the Indian top-order batters may have failed in the match versus Pakistan. However, each one of them is a class act and one has to rely on their excellent pedigree to come forth with all guns blazing in the remaining matches. The quartet along with Rishabh Pant, Ravindra Jadeja, Ashwin and Thakur to follow should be good enough to give India a decent batting unit.

India is lucky to be placed in Group 2 of the Super 12. The competition in Group 1 is much stiffer as the two qualifying group stage teams to join were Sri Lanka and Bangladesh. Both these sides are good enough to cause a surprise defeat to any of the sides in their group. Whereas, Group 2 has Namibia and Scotland and so the only major threat to either India, Pakistan and New Zealand would be Afghanistan.

The Afghan side looks like a very good T20 side. Their batting side is loaded with big hitters who could destroy bowlers on their day. They showed this against Scotland and if they do manage a decent score, even the best of teams could struggle to chase it as they have two mystery spin bowlers in Mujeeb Ur Rahman and Rashid Khan.

Both India and New Zealand, having lost their first match, will be looking at their encounter as a knock-out game. A quarterfinal is what it has been referred to. If one goes by historical analysis it seems the right way to look at it. However, cricket is a game of uncertainty and the T20 is a format that is quite unpredictable.

India has the firepower to get back on track. They need to make changes as the time has come for them to look beyond past reputations. For millions of India’s supporters, the toss will be the heart stopping moment. Heads or tails, Virat has to get it right this time.

Mamata to visit to 3 temples in Goa, meet fisherfolk

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has a packed schedule on the second day of her three-day trip to Goa, which includes, visits to three iconic temples, an interaction with the fisherfolk and members of civil society and a media conference, along with a meeting with the Trinamool Congress officials of the state.

Banerjee, who’s party has already engaged in a war of words over defacement of posters and banners with the BJP in poll-bound Goa, is also expected to chair a fresh round of inductees into the West Bengal-based political party during her visit.

On Friday, Banerjee is scheduled to visit the Shri Mahalasa Narayani temple at Mardol, the Mangueshi temple in Priol and the Tapobhoomi temple in Kundaim.

While the first two are popular landmarks in the temple hub of Ponda in South Goa, the Tapobhoomi temple is home to the Shree Datta Padmanabha Peeth, which is the spiritual seat of the Bhandari samaj, a politically significant caste grouping in Goa.

After crushing defeats in the 2012 Assembly polls and the 2014 Lok Sabha elections in Goa, the Trinamool Congress has announced that it will contest all 40 Assembly seats in the 2022 polls in Goa.

The party’s poll strategy for Goa is being drawn by Banerjee’s political strategist Prashant Kishor.

Facebook, WhatsApp, Insta apps retain name, as parent finds a new one, Meta

0

Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg on Thursday announced that his company will have a new name, Meta.

Somewhat predictably, Zuckerberg downplayed that this rebranding, the first in Facebook’s 17 years of existence, is to divert a barrage of bad PR.

“We are a company that builds technology to connect,” Zuckerberg said. “Together, we can finally put people at the centre of our technology to reflect who we are and what we hope to build.”

The name “Facebook” doesn’t fully encompass everything the company does now, and is still closely linked to one product, he added.

“But over time, I hope we are seen as a metaverse company.”

“The names of the apps that we build — Facebook, Instagram, Messenger and WhatsApp – will remain the same,” the company’s verified handle, @facebook, tweeted.

“Announcing @Meta – the Facebook company’s new name. Meta is helping to build the metaverse, a place where we’ll play and connect in 3D. Welcome to the next chapter of social connection,” it said, attaching a short video on the four apps and the meta logo.

@meta tweets remained protected as of this writing and meta.com redirected to a welcome page that outlines the branding change.

The Verge argued that a rebrand is part of Zuckerberg’s efforts to shift gears away from Facebook being known as just a social media company into plans for building the metaverse.

Zuckerberg wrote a blog on Thursday that the company’s corporate structure would not be changing, but how it reports financial results will.

“Starting with our results for the fourth quarter of 2021, we plan to report on two operating segments: Family of Apps and Reality Labs,” he said.

“We also intend to start trading under the new stock ticker we have reserved, MVRS, on December 1. Today’s announcement does not affect how we use or share data.”

On Monday, multiple news outlets published details of internal Facebook documents disclosed to the Securities and Exchange Commission and provided to Congress in redacted form.

They showed deep concerns that the Facebook user base was aging, and the platform was losing traction among younger generations.

The documents also showed that Facebook had prioritised key countries who would receive enhanced protections around elections.

To Zuckerberg’s baiters, Meta was a copycat of Google’s playbook when, in 2015, a larger holding company called Alphabet came into being.

In his first interview as CEO of Meta, Zuckerberg made it clear that unlike the founders of Google who stepped aside coinciding with the birth of Alphabet, he has no plans to give up the top job.

Instead, the change is about recognising a shift inside the company that’s already taken place, he argued.

Zuckerberg has been pouring billions of dollars — $10 billion this year alone, into building the metaverse — an expansive, immersive vision of the internet taken from the pages of sci-fi novels like Snow Crash and Ready Player One.

“I think we’re basically moving from being Facebook first as a company to being metaverse first,” he told interviewer Alex Heath in an interview recorded a day before the actual announcement.

It seems that Zuckerberg formally kicked off the project just over six months ago. The small handful of employees involved had to sign separate non-disclosure agreements. Zuckerberg refused to tell Heath the name.

“He said he had been thinking about rebranding the company ever since he bought Instagram and WhatsApp in 2012 and 2014, but earlier this year he realized that it was time to make the change,” Heath reported.

“I think that there was just a lot of confusion and awkwardness about having the company brand be also the brand of one of the social media apps,” Zuckerberg said.

“I think it’s helpful for people to have a relationship with a company that is different from the relationship with any specific one of the products, that can kind of supersede all of that.”

The current cycle of bad news “had nothing to bear on this. Even though I think some people might want to make that connection, I think that’s sort of a ridiculous thing. If anything, I think that this is not the environment that you would want to introduce a new brand in,” Zuckerberg countered.

In the next decade, he thinks most people will be spending time in a fully immersive, 3D version of the internet that spans not just Meta’s hardware such as the Quest, but devices made by others.

Zuckerberg is pushing his teams to build technology that could one day let you show up in a virtual space as a full-bodied avatar, or appear as a hologram of yourself in the real-world living room of your friend who lives across the planet.

“At a high level, we did this segment reporting change on Monday as part of earnings. So we’re now looking at our business as two different segments. One for the social apps and one for future platforms basically. And the idea is that the metaverse work that we’re doing is not about any one of those segments. It’s not like Reality Labs is doing the work building the metaverse. It goes across all of this. The metaverse is going to be both future platforms and social experiences,” he said.

Star whistleblower Frances Haugen has not reacted on the name change yet.

The former program manager’s charter features right up on her timeline: “To start, we must demand: 1) Privacy-conscious mandatory transparency from Facebook, 2) A reckoning with the dangers of engagement-based ranking, 3) Non-content-based solutions to these problems — we need tools other than censorship to keep the world safe.”

T20 World Cup: My job is to get wickets in middle overs, says Zampa after win against Lanka

0

After a fine performance against Sri Lanka, leg-spinner Adam Zampa on Thursday said that his job in the Australia team is to get wickets in the middle overs and make it easy for the bowlers at the back end in the ongoing ICC Men’s T20 World Cup.

Showing signs of returning back to form, David Warner (65 off 42) smashed a quickfire fifty after a fine performance by bowlers as Australia registered a convincing 7-wicket win over Sri Lanka in a Super 12 match in Dubai.

Adam Zampa ( 2/12) had a sensational performance with the ball and got the Player of the Match award.

“I find them (Sri Lanka) really challenging. They are very good players of spin, I bowled well tonight and glad I did. I have tended to bowl a little bit in the powerplay, little bit towards the back end in recent times but with the team that we have got, the big three will bowl in the powerplay and Maxwell bowling a couple of overs, my job is to get wickets in the middle and make it easy for the guys at the back end,” said Zampa at the post-match presentation.

Talking about the Dubai pitch, the leg-spinner said, “To be honest it (the surface) was quite slow in the first innings, it spun a little bit more than it did in the second innings. I think the moisture and dew took effect in the second innings.”

Australia captain Finch also praised Zampa for taking big wickets.

“When you’re looking at the impact on the game, Zamps was terrific tonight. He was fantastic, got big wickets. That was a world class performance from him,” he said.
