Great that Stokes will be on the plane: Smith on Ashes series

0

Australian batter Steve Smith has given his thumbs up to England all-rounder Ben Stokes for making a successful return to the side for the Ashes tour beginning next month, saying it’s great to “have him on the plane” after taking time off to focus on mental health.

Stokes had taken an indefinite break to focus on his mental health and also tend to an injured finger. But recently, the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) announced that that charismatic all-rounder would be available for the full Ashes tour, which begins with The Gabba Test on December 8.

While Stokes’ inclusion will make the touring party much stronger, Smith said it’s always good to play against “quality performers”.

“I think it (Stokes’ inclusion) is great,” Smith said on SEN 1170 Drive on Wednesday. “Obviously, he took a step back and was struggling with a few things mentally. Credit to him for being able to step away from the game and ensure he gets that right.

“I think it’s great that he’s on the plane, you want to be coming up against quality performers and ‘Stokesy’ is certainly that. We only have to look back to Headingley a few years ago, that knock was simply outstanding. It’s great to see him on the plane, yeah, I’m glad he’s going okay,” added Smith.

Stokes had rattled Australia during the 2019 Ashes series, scoring two hundreds and averaging 55.12 with the bat. He also took eight wickets.

YouTube continues to pen a success story for Google and according to Sundar Pichai, it has surpassed 50 million music and premium subscribers, including those in trial, and short-video making app YouTube Shorts (launched first in India last year) continues to see higher adoption rates.

“In the past year, the average number of daily first-time creators more than doubled. There’s a lot more to come, including tapping into commerce on YouTube,” Alphabet and Google CEO Pichai said during the company’s earnings call late on Tuesday.

“From shoppable live stream experiments with retailers like Sephora, Target and Walmart, to pilots that view us by directly from their favourite creators videos, we’re still in the early innings of what’s possible,” he added.

In the July-September quarter, YouTube recorded advertising revenues of $7.2 billion — up 43 per cent due to strength in both direct response and brand advertising.

Over 2 million creators are now making money and building their businesses on YouTube via YouTube partner programme with 10 different ways to monetise — their content from Super Chat to BrandConnect.

Google said that YouTube’s reach is becoming increasingly incremental to TV.

“Connected TV is driving part of this growth. It’s our fastest-growing screen. Advertisers can now drive conversions on the big screen, which brings me to brands of all sizes continue to buy YouTube at both ends of the funnel to create future demand while they convert existing demand,” said Philipp Schindler, Senior Vice President/Chief Business Officer.

For Pichai, YouTube is unique in the sense that it’s a true video — native video first product from day one.

“Content responsibility has been our most important focus for the past many years. And beyond that, I think we worked hard to make sure both creators can do well, and it’s a great platform for advertisers. We’ve had strengthened brand. We’ve built on it with robust momentum in direct response,” Pichai said.

The motion, passed on Tuesday, will authorise cross-border operations to be carried out in Iraq and Syria from October 30, 2021 to October 30, 2023, Xinhua News Agency reported.

Jobless youths send thousands of letters to Yogi

Thousands of letters are being posted to Uttar Prdesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, urging him to immediately fill up vacancies for 1,37,500 assistant teachers in schools across the state.

Some of the aspirants who are waiting for jobs, have written letters in blood.

Since July of this year, these candidates have been protesting at the State Council of Educational Research and Training (SCERT) office in Lucknow, alleging partiality in recruitment against them by the state government.

They claim that the government supports upper caste candidates while ignoring candidates from marginalised communities.

On October 21, the agitating candidates were brutally lathi-charged and dispersed by the police. The police have arrested 61 candidates so far and sent them to jail.

The protesters have also written letters to the President and Governor saying that ending their lives by suicide would be the only option left for them if they did not get the jobs.

The BJP came to power in Uttar Pradesh in 2017 with a thumping majority, promising jobs, and better socio-economic development in the state.

Congress General Secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra and Samajwadi Party president Akhilesh Yadav have supported the demands of the youths by tweeting in their favour.
