Facebook to spend $10bn this year on its metaverse division

0

Social media giant Facebook said it will spend more than $10 billion to build out its vision for “metaverse” — a new phase of interconnected virtual experiences using technologies like Virtual and Augmented Reality (VR/AR).

The firm will spend billions of dollars on Facebook Reality Labs, its metaverse division tasked with creating AR and VR hardware, software, and content.

“We are committed to bringing this long-term vision to life and we expect to increase our investments for the next several years,” the company wrote in its third-quarter earnings release.

Facebook sees AR and VR as being core to “the next generation of online social experiences”.

It has invested heavily in VR and AR, including buying companies like Oculus this year created a product team to work on the metaverse.

Even, CEO Mark Zuckerberg has been talking about the metaverse for the past several months.

Facebook earlier this month announced to hire 10,000 people to help the social network build the metaverse.

According to the company, the next computing platform has the potential to help unlock access to new creative, social and economic opportunities

The company reported $29.01 billion in revenue in the Q3, up from $21.47 billion the same quarter last year.

The company said it expects Q4 revenue of $31.5 billion to $34 billion. Analysts were projecting sales of $34.8 billion.

Facebook said the forecast “reflects the significant uncertainty we face in the fourth quarter in light of continued headwinds from Apple’s iOS 14 changes, and macroeconomic and Covid-19 related factors”.

Facebook said in the third quarter it had 3.58 billion monthly users across its family of apps, up from 3.51 billion in the second quarter.

Pakistan have come to T20 World Cup full of confidence, says Williamson

0

New Zealand skipper Kane Williamson thinks that Pakistan have come with full confidence to the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup. He added that Pakistans 10-wicket thrashing of India on Sunday in Dubai was a proof of why the 2009 champions are deemed as one of the favourites in the competition. New Zealand kick-start their campaign in the tournament against Pakistan in a Group 2 match at the Sharjah Cricket Stadium on Tuesday.

“It was a fantastic performance. I think Pakistan have come to the T20 World Cup full of confidence, having played in these conditions more than most. They certainly put it on show last night and showed why they’re one of the favourites in the competition,” said Williamson in the pre-match press conference on Monday.

“Tomorrow I’m sure they’ll be very strong again, so for us, it’s focusing on the cricket that we want to play and trying to adjust to conditions. I think we’ll see throughout this tournament at the three different venues that each venue will probably playing a little bit differently, so that will be an important factor for us,” added Williamson.

Williamson mentioned about the mix of youth and experience in a very well-balanced Pakistan squad. “They’ve got a very well-balanced side, and also a great mix between youth and experience with Mohammad Hafeez and Shoaib Malik in the middle order, as well, which brings a lot of experience to the side. You mentioned Rizwan and Babar at the top of the order who have been formidable in terms of their partnership and the quality that they bring.”

“A very well-balanced side and also a side that’s very accustomed to playing conditions and playing cricket here in the UAE. Without a doubt they’re coming into this tournament feeling pretty good about their chances, but having said that, in tournament sport and particularly in T20 cricket, every team, I think, turns up with confidence knowing that on their day, anything can happen.”

This will also be the first time New Zealand and Pakistan will face in a T20I after the Blackcaps abandoned the white-ball tour of Pakistan, minutes before the start of the first ODI in Rawalpindi. This also resulted in England cancelling white-ball tour as well. Williamson hoped that there won’t be grudges between the two teams.

“It was a really disappointing situation. I know the team that were there were very much looking forward to the occasion and playing cricket over in Pakistan, and it was a real shame that it wasn’t able to go ahead. But there are also a lot of good relations within the two teams. Over the years they’ve played a lot against each other, and a number of players have played with each other, as well. I’m sure it’ll be played in the right spirit, but no doubt Pakistan will be well supported, as they always are here in the UAE.”

Williamson signed off by saying that he was fit to captain New Zealand on Tuesday. “There’s been a few. But I believe everybody currently is fit or fit enough. My elbow is improving. It’s just been an ongoing sort of challenge to deal with it regarding loading and these sorts of things. It’s just a work in progress. But I think all in all, it’s showing improvement, which is good.”

Will Modi government condemn those trolling Shami, asks Owaisi

0

AIMIM chief Asaduddin Owaisi on Monday asked BJP government at the Centre if it condemns those trolling Indian pacer Mohammad Shami on social media following India’s defeat at the hands of Pakistan in Sunday’s Twenty20 World Cup match.

Terming the trolling unfortunate and shameful, the Hyderabad MP said it shows how communalism, radicalisation, and hatred against Muslims has spread in the country.

“There are 11 players in the team and there is only one Muslim but you are still targeting him. A win or a loss is part of the game. A team wins and another team loses but the way a player is being trolled on social media and the kind of rubbish being said about him shows how communalism and hatred has spread. Who is responsible for this,” he asked during an interaction with media persons.

Owaisi recalled that he had urged the Modi government that India should not play the match against Pakistan as our soldiers are dying in Kashmir and the reason for their killings are terrorists coming from the neighbouring country.

He alleged that the Modi government has no action plan to stop the killings in Jammu and Kashmir.

He pointed out that during the last few days more than 25 civilians were killed. A civilian also died in cross-firing in Poonch.

Owaisi also slammed the seizure of two-wheelers in the valley and checking of the bikes of school-going students.

“What’s so great about it,” he remarked when asked to comment on Home Minister Amit Shah removing bullet-proof shields while addressing a public meeting in Srinagar. He recalled there were no bullet-proof vehicles when he visited Kashmir twice as part of the delegations sent by the Centre.

On India achieving the milestone of administering 100 crore doses of Covid doses, the MP said China crossed 200 crore vaccines in September.

Noting that only 31 per cent Indians have received double dose, he claimed that the Modi government lied to the nation that the entire population will get double dose by December 31, 2021. At this pace, double dose to all people can be achieved only in March-April 2022.

“There is also no truth in the government’s Make in India claim as 90 per cent of the doses administered so far were of Oxford-AstraZeneca vaccine made in Britain,” he said.

Asked how many seats All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) will be contesting in the upcoming Assembly elections in Uttar Pradesh, Owaisi said that a decision was yet to be taken. “Our party’s (UP) president Shaukat Ali said the party is preparing to contest 100 seats. We will sit and decide,” he said.

Facebook removes online abuse hurled at Mohammed Shami

0

After pacer Mohammed Shami faced online abuse following India’s defeat to Pakistan at the ICC T20 World Cup match, Facebook on Monday said that it quickly removed the comments that hurled abuse at him.

In a statement to IANS, the social network said that no one should have to experience abuse anywhere, and “we don’t want it on our platforms”.

“We quickly introduced measures to remove the comments that directed abuse at an Indian cricketer and we’ll continue to take action against those that violate our Community Standards,” the Facebook spokesperson said.

“We have recently announced updates to our bullying and harassment policy that increases protections for all public figures,” the spokesperson added.

The Virat Kohli-led side started its ICC T20 World Cup campaign on a disappointing note as it lost its opening encounter by 10 wickets, with Shami emerging as the most expensive bowler on the night, giving away 43 runs in 3.5 overs.

The trollers on social media platforms linked his below-par performance to his religion.

Facebook does not allow attacks on people based on their protected characteristics, which includes race, religion, nationality or sexual orientation. This includes the use of emojis when used in a hateful context.

Bullying and harassment are not allowed on the platform, but when they do occur, the company takes it very seriously.

Several cricketers, past and current, also came out in support of Shami, who received derogatory and hateful comments on social media.

“When we support #TeamIndia, we support every person who represents Team India. @MdShami11 is a committed, world-class bowler. He had an off day like any other sportsperson can have. I stand behind Shami & Team India,” tweeted legendary cricketer Sachin Tendulkar.

Former Indian opener Virender Sehwag posted: “The online attack on Mohammad Shami is shocking and we stand by him. He is a champion and anyone who wears the India cap has India in their hearts far more than any online mob. With you Shami. Agle match mein dikado jalwa.”

Banking stocks power equity indices’ rise; Sensex closes 145 pts higher

0

India’s key equity indices – S&P BSE Sensex and NSE Nifty50 – made gains on Monday on the back of healthy buying in banking stocks, as well as, better-than-expected quarterly results.

Accordingly the indices broke their four-session losing streak and ended marginally in the green.

Initially, the two key indices had a flat opening but witnessed a strong recovery.

On the global front, stocks held their ground after eight consecutive sessions of gains, as traders weighed the prospects of strong corporate earnings in the backdrop of widening inflation risks from multi-year high crude oil prices.

In terms of domestic market, volumes on the NSE were a little higher than the previous day, bank index was the largest gainer while realty, auto, IT, consumer durables, telecom and FMCG lost the most.

Consequently, the 30-scrip Sensex closed at 60,967.05 points, up 145.43 points, or 0.24 per cent.

The Sensex opened at 61,398.75 points from its previous close of 60,821.62 points.

Similarly, the NSE Nifty50 ended the day’s trade higher. It rose to 18,125.40, up 10.50 points, or 0.058 per cent.

It opened at 18,229.50 points from its previous close of 18,114.90 points.

“Nifty recovered well from the morning weakness. In the process it made a lower intra day low compared to the previous session but closed higher. It turned up from the low of 17,968 – close to the support level of 17,948,” said Deepak Jasani, Head of Retail Research, HDFC Securities.

“Selling pressure in some index heavyweights is counterbalanced by buying in some other sectors. However the broader market continues to flounder and the advance decline ratio is deeply in the negative. Nifty has a chance to stabilize and bounce up though a broader market recovery seems a couple of days away.”

In addition, Vinod Nair, Head of Research at Geojit Financial Services said: “Market opened weak, however strong support from Banking stocks helped to balance the bearish pressure and lifted the indices to trade on a flat note.”

“Improved asset quality and business growth based on key Q2 earnings aided the banking sector to improve the outlook leading to outperformance. Global markets were steady in anticipation of robust quarter earnings in the backdrop of inflation fears and possible tightening of monetary policy in the next policies.”

Duty, taxes to lift solar tariffs to Rs 2.6 per unit next fiscal

0

Solar tariffs may rise to Rs 2.6-2.7 per unit (from an all-time low of Rs 2 unit) over the next fiscal in the wake of the recent increase in the Goods and Services Tax (GST) on renewable energy equipment, and the proposed customs duty on imported solar modules.

The Indian government has increased the GST on critical components of a solar project such as photovoltaic cells and modules from 5 per cent to 12 per cent, with effect from October 1. This has increased the total taxation on a solar project from 8-9 per cent to 12-13 per cent.

This will more than double to 30 per cent when customs duty of 40 per cent on imported solar modules kicks in from April 1, 2022.

Additionally, module prices increased to 23-24 cents per watt in first half of current fiscal from an average 21 cents per watt (for a mono-crystalline module) last fiscal. This was primarily due to significant increase in the polysilicon prices – a key component used in solar cells – because of disruptions at the facilities of Chinese manufacturers.

Crisil Ratings Directors Ankit Hakhu said: “High module prices, taxes and duties are likely to result in project cost inflation for solar developers. Compared with fiscal 2021, we expect the project cost to increase by 15-20 per cent (Rs 60-70 lakh per MW) on average to Rs 4.2-4.3 crore per MW next fiscal from Rs. 3.6-3.7 crore/MW seen during last few fiscals.

“This might make future solar bids expensive at Rs 2.6-2.7 per unit compared with the lows of Rs 2-2.2 per unit seen during fiscal 2021, for developers to maintain returns of 11-12 per cent.”

On the other hand, developers of already bid-out projects are expected to pass on the impact of taxes and duties under the change-in-law clause.

The above calculation on tariffs includes an anticipated reduction in prices of solar module to 20-21 cents per watt next fiscal, with an expectation of smoothening of silicon prices following the ramp-up in operations of the planned and existing capacities. In the absence of this correction, tariffs might further increase by 15-20 paisa per unit to maintain the said returns.

However, the distribution utilities have been wary in the past to participate in bids above Rs 2.5 per unit. For instance, the manufacturing-linked tender of 12 GW which was bid-out in January 2020 at Rs 2.9 per unit remained unsigned by the distribution utilities. Only recently in Q2 fiscal 2022, the tender saw partial acceptance by these utilities and at lower tariffs of Rs 2.5 per unit.

“An increase in tariffs envisaged in future bids may scare away state distribution companies and add to an already large capacity of 20 GW that has been bid-out but haven’t found a buyer for the electricity. On the other hand, if developers resort to aggressive bidding in a competitive market, it will likely increase the credit risk on new projects as the cash flow cushion may be thinner than earlier,” Crisil Ratings Director Aditya Jhaver said.

Thus, the ability to take suitable tariff hikes and approvals under the change in law clause remain key drivers for credit quality of future projects.

Further, while the custom duty will support the cost competitiveness of domestic module manufacturers vis-a-vis imports, no notable module price correction is envisaged from these players over the medium term as it will take some time for the domestic players to ramp-up the capacities along the entire value chain, and lower their operating cost.

Afghanistan captain Mohammad Nabi won the toss and elected to bat first against Scotland in a Group 2 match of Super 12 stage in the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup at Sharjah Cricket Stadium here on Monday.

After winning the toss, Nabi said, “The wicket is dry so we will try and put runs on the board and defend it. The pitch looks good for batting and we will try to restrict them. We had a really good game against WI in the warm-up. We’ll try to repeat that combination and performance.”

Naga Shaurya in place of Naga Chaitanya for ‘Varudu Kaavalenu’

The movie ‘Varudu Kaavalenu’ is making some noise, prior to its release. With Naga Shaurya and Ritu Varma as the main leads, the movie is gearing up for its release soon.

Debutante director Lakshmi Sowjanya had a media interaction Monday, where she shares her experiences about ‘Varudu Kaavalenu’.

Lakshmi Sowjanya mentioned that she had narrated this story to Naga Chaitanya, even before she roped in Naga Shaurya. “I did have Naga Shaurya in my consideration.
