Lahiru Kumara, Liton Das fined for breaching ICC Code of Conduct

Sri Lankan cricketer Lahiru Kumara and Bangladesh player Liton Das have been fined 25 per cent and 15 per cent of their match fees respectively for breaching the ICC Code of Conduct during the ICC T20 World Cup ‘Super 12’ game on October 24.

During the Group B, Super 12 game, which the former T20 World champions won by five wickets with seven balls remaining at the Sharjah Cricket Stadium, Sri Lankan bowler Lahiru and Bangladesh batter Liton Das breached Level 1 of the ICC Code of Conduct for Players and Player Support Personnel.

Lahiru was found guilty of breaching Article 2.5 of the ICC Code of Conduct for Players and Player Support Personnel, which relates to “Using language, actions or gestures which disparage, or which could provoke an aggressive reaction from a batter upon his/her dismissal during an international match.”

Liton was found guilty of breaching Article 2.20 of the ICC Code of Conduct for Players and Player Support Personnel, which relates to “Conduct that is contrary to the spirit of the game”.

“The incident occurred in the fifth over after the dismissal of Liton in the Bangladesh innings. After he dismissed Liton, Lahiru walked towards him using actions and words which provoked an aggressive reaction from the batter. Having been provoked by the bowler Lahiru, Liton reacted aggressively and in a manner which was contrary to the spirit of cricket,” ICC said in a statement on Monday.

Lahiru was fined 25 per cent of his match fee and received one demerit point, while Liton was fined 15 per cent of his match fee and received one demerit point.

“Javagal Srinath of the Emirates ICC Elite Panel of Match Referees imposed the sanctions, which were ratified by the ICC Cricket Operations department as per the COVID-19 interim playing regulations. Lahiru and Liton both pleaded guilty to the offences and accepted the proposed sanctions, so there was no need for a formal hearing,” the statement added.

The charges were levelled by on-field umpires Joel Wilson and Adrian Holdstock, third umpire Michael Gough and fourth umpire Rod Tucker.

Level 1 breaches carry a minimum penalty of an official reprimand, a maximum penalty of a fine of 50 per cent of a player’s match fee, and one or two demerit points.

When a player reaches four or more demerit points within a 24-month period, they are converted into suspension points and a player is suspended. Two suspension points equate to a ban from one Test or two ODIs or two T20Is, whatever comes first for the player.

Demerit points remain on a player or player support personnel’s disciplinary record for 24 months from their imposition following which they are expunged.

No clarity on ‘Virata Parvam’, ‘Drishyam 2’ release dates

Venkatesh Daggubati’s upcoming thriller ‘Drishyam 2’ and Rana Daggubati’s upcoming movie ‘Virata Parvam’ are struggling with ambiguity by the makers. While both movies had decent hype it seems to be fading out, as there are no proper updates on their releases.

Malayalam super hit movie ‘Drishyam’s sequel ‘Drishyam 2’ had an OTT release, which was widely enjoyed by all. The Telugu remake of ‘Drishyam 2’ stars Venkatesh Daggubati, reprising Mohan Lal’s role from the Malayalam original. The Telugu remake also was expected to be streamed on OTT platforms, rather than going for a theatrical release.

But, the makers have not made any announcement regarding the release. It seems like the producers are not sure to release the movie on OTT, as of now. Producer Suresh Babu has sealed a deal with Disney+ Hotstar regarding the OTT release of ‘Drishyam 2’, but the OTT giant hasn’t announced any release date.

‘Virata Parvam’ stars Rana Daggubati as a rebel hero, while Sai Pallavi plays his love interest in this upcoming movie. Helmed by Venu Udugula, there is no certainty regarding the release of this biggie as well. Earlier, when the makes released the promotional videos, the movie had grabbed everyone’s attention. But, without any serious updates, it seems like the makers are unable to keep up the hype.

Analysts believe the movies would get good viewership if released on OTT platforms, as the other Telugu movies have occupied good release dates.

Jittery Virat loses cool, says ‘wear our cricket kit and walk into the field’

0

There were more fireworks and fiery comments in Virat Kohli’s post-match press conference than there were from the Indian side during their ICC T20 World Cup ‘Super 12′ match against Pakistan, which the 2007 champions lost by 10 wickets.

Rattled by the crushing defeat — caused mainly due to the lack of application on the part of the Indian bowlers who kept bowling lollipops to the likes of Babar Azam (68 not out) and Mohammad Rizwan (79 not out), and the top order which seemed to have forgotten to bat — Kohli’s comments after the game bordered on sarcasm, indicating he was truly stumped by the loss.

Asked if it was “overconfidence against Pakistan” that led to the crushing defeat, Kohli said that he wished people asking such questions could be in the Indian cricketers’ shoes and understand what pressure is. Before, Sunday’s game, India had never lost an ICC T20 World Cup game to their arch-rivals, but Azam and Rizwan broke that jinx, with a 152-run stand achieved in 17.5 overs.

“You know, it’s amazing what the realities and what ideas people have on the outside. I just wish they could put on our cricket kit and actually walk into the field and understand what pressure is. You don’t go out there to take anything lightly, especially a team like Pakistan who on their day can beat anyone in the world. This is a game that has to be respected, and we are a team that definitely respects the game, and we do not think that winning one game is the end of the world, and no other team should think that,” said Kohli.

“This is a very big game. Cricket is beyond and above anyone else, any individual, and we definitely respect the game. We never take any opposition lightly; neither do we differentiate between oppositions. That’s how we play our cricket.

“On the day if we haven’t played good, we accept it and we give credit to the opposition, as well. We don’t create any other scenarios other than knowing what went wrong and trying to correct that and move forward in a positive manner,” the India skipper added.

On whether young Ishan Kishan could have been given the opportunity to play in the game ahead of Rohit Sharma, given that the former had done “very well in the warmup matches”, Kohli put the question back into the reporter’s court, saying, “It’s a very brave question. What do you think, sir? I played the team that I thought was the best. What is your opinion? Will you drop Rohit Sharma from T20 internationals? You’ll drop Rohit Sharma? Do you know what he did in the last game that we played? Yeah? Unbelievable. If you want control, please tell me before so I can answer accordingly,” retorted Kohli.

EWS-OBC quota: SC tells Centre to put on hold NEET-PG counselling, Centre agrees

0

The Supreme Court on Monday told the Centre to put on hold counselling for NEET-PG until it decides the validity of OBC and EWS reservation in All India Quota (AIQ). The Centre’s counsel submitted that counselling will not commence till the top court decides the case on reservation for EWS-OBC quota in the All India Quota Medical Seats.

Senior advocate Arvind Datar mentioned the matter before a bench headed by Justice D.Y. Chandrachud.

Datar submitted that the counselling schedule has been announced — from October 24 and it will be concluded on October 29 — and sought the court’s intervention in the matter stating that the process will be completed during the pendency of the matter before the court.

The apex court had questioned the Centre on the rationale behind fixing Rs 8 lakh as annual income criteria for EWS. Following Datar’s submissions, the bench directed the Centre not to go ahead with the counselling process until it decides the matter. The bench is slated to hear the matter on October 28.

On October 21, the top court had questioned the Centre over adopting the criteria of the OBC creamy layer of Rs 8 lakh annual income for granting reservations under the economic weaker section (EWS), despite the latter not suffering from social and educational backwardness.

The court told Centre’s counsel, “You just cannot pull out eight lakh from thin air. You are making unequal equal by applying the Rs eight lakh limit”.

It noted that for OBCs, people who are below the eight lakh annual income criteria, they suffer from social and educational backwardness. It added, “Under the constitutional scheme, the EWS category is not socially and educationally backward”.

The bench had queried Additional Solicitor General K.M. Nataraj whether the government has collected some data — demographic or sociological or socio-economic — before fixing the EWS criteria uniformly. It further queried the law officer whether the government accounted for the differences in urban and rural purchasing power, and also whether it undertook any exercise before arriving at the criteria.

Nataraj submitted the limit was fixed based on the Sinho Commission report, but the bench was not convinced.

The top court is hearing a clutch of petitions by Neil Aurelio Nunes and others against the 27 per cent reservation for Other Backward Classes (OBC) and 10 per cent reservation for EWS in all-India Quota seats for postgraduate medical courses. As many as 15 per cent seats in MBBS and 50 per cent seats in MS and MD courses are filled through All India Quota from the candidates selected through NEET.

Madonna Sebastian sings Kannada song at ‘Kotigobba 3’ success event

Multi-lingual actress Madonna Sebastian, who made her Kannada film industry debut with the super-hit movie ‘Kotigobba 3’, won the hearts of Kannadigas by singing the title track from the movie, ‘Yatake ninnane bayaside hrudaya nee kootiyali obbane’. In the film, the song is sung by Shreya Ghoshal.
