Nurses think about suicide more than other workers in US: Study

0

A team of researchers has reported that nurses in the US experience suicidal ideation in greater numbers than other general workers and those who do are less likely to tell anyone about it.

The findings, published in the American Journal of Nursing, indicate that those who reported suicidal ideation also said they were less likely than other respondents to seek professional help for their emotional issues.

“While the findings of our study are serious enough, we recognise the impact of the current pandemic has dramatically compounded the situation,” said researcher Liselotte Dyrbye from the Mayo Clinic.

“The need for system-level interventions to improve the work lives of nurses and other members of the health care team is greater than ever before,” Dyrbye added.

In a national survey, more than 7,000 nurses responded on well-being, with questions ranging from burnout to depression.

More than 400 nurses reported having suicidal ideation within the past year, the study said.

More than one-third of the nurses had at least one symptom of burnout and 40 per cent screened positive for symptoms of depression.

The researchers said their findings indicate that the situation needs urgent attention and systems – and practice-based interventions need to be developed and implemented to address burnout and suicidal ideation.

It is important to note that this survey was conducted, beginning in late 2017, with data collection in 2018, before any of these nurses were confronted with the effects of the Covid-19 pandemic.

I-League: Delhi FC outclass Madan Maharaj FC 6-0 in Qualifiers

0

Delhi FC finished their I-League Qualifiers 2021 campaign in style as they outclassed Madan Maharaj FC 6-0 at the Bangalore Football Stadium, here on Saturday.

Delhi FC scored three goals on either side of halftime with Nikhil Mali and Gagandeep Bali netting a brace each, while Sergio Barboza and captain Anwar Ali added one goal each to end the capital side’s maiden Qualifiers campaign on a high.

Delhi dominated proceedings from the starting whistle, having an early chance to take the lead when Brazilian Barboza ran clear through on goal with only the goalkeeper to beat. Barboza was caught up by a retrieving Pranendra Singh Thakur, but the latter’s last-ditch tackle on the Delhi attacker was deemed a foul inside the box by the referee.

Having earned the penalty for the second time in successive matches, Sergio Barboza stepped up to take the spot-kick and calmly converted from his third attempt in the 5th minute. In the 13th minute, Jagannath Sana produced Madan Maha’aj FC’s only shot on target in the first half as he embarked on a wonderful individual run, twisting and turning to evade tackles from the chasing Delhi FC players before hitting a low drive and drawing a fine save from goalkeeper Suraj Mallick.

Delhi FC doubled their lead in the 19th minute through winger Nikhil Mali. The goal came from a well-worked set-piece routine that came right out of the Delhi FC training ground.

With the MMFC players anticipating a shot from Anwar Ali’s free-kick from a promising position, Delhi FC caught them off guard as Ali played in Sergio Barboza who drilled in a low cross that was tapped in comfortably by Nikhil Mali at the edge of the 6-yard box.

Nikhil Mali soon doubled his personal tally and made it 3-0 for Delhi FC in the 21st minute. He could have had a quickfire hattrick within five minutes, but he missed a glorious chance to bag his third goal in the 24th minute.

Delhi FC resumed the second half just as they had played all through the first, and made it 4-0 through substitute striker Gagandeep Bali. The second-half substitute grabbed a brace seven minutes later and made it 5-0 for Delhi FC in the 63rd minute.

Delhi compiled further misery on MMFC ten minutes later in the 73rd minute as the side from the capital racked up half a dozen goals. Delhi had many more chances to add to their sizeable advantage over the remainder of the game, but could not do so as the likes of Laiwang Bohham, Himanshu Jangra, and Samuel Shadap all missed relatively easy chances.

The result ensured that Madan Maharaj remain winless in the final round of the Hero I-League Qualifiers, while Delhi FC finish on four points.

Rohit Sharma, Mohammad Rizwan could take the spotlight in India-Pak clash: Younis Khan

0

Former Pakistan captain Younis Khan, who guided the side to the ICC T20 World Cup title in 2009, feels that while Virat Kohli and Babar Azam are two “very bankable batsmen” for their respective sides, Rohit Sharma and Mohammad Rizwan could well decide who wins the T20 World Cup’s ‘Super 12’ clash between the arch-rivals here on Sunday.

The 43-year-old also said the India pace bowler Jasprit Bumrah had been brilliant in the last few months.

“Virat Kohli and Babar Azam are two very bankable batsmen for both India and Pakistan respectively, but I feel that Rohit Sharma and Mohammad Rizwan can also turn up the heat. The spotlight will largely be on the two captains, so Rohit and Rizwan will be eased off pressure and can produce match-winning performances for their sides,” Younis said on YouTube channel ‘Uncut’.

While India will hope to extend their T20 World Cup run of victories against Pakistan to 6-0, Azam has said that the lop-sided results were a thing of the past and Pakistan was keen to turn things around.

Younis Khan said that Pakistan should be wary of the threat posed by Bumrah, though he added that his country’s bowlers too were in “good shape”.

“Pakistan’s fast bowlers have been in good shape. For India, their pace attack has improved significantly in the recent past as well. Bumrah, in particular, has been brilliant in the last few months.”

He also said that as far as experience goes, Kohli had established himself as a top cricketer and a leader, while Babar Azam was still establishing his international career.

“Both are top, top players. Babar is still young and he is building his career right now. Kohli, meanwhile, had made his debut in 2008 when I was still playing. I don’t particularly think that the comparison is fair but it’s good to see fans talking about the two players in good stead,” said the former skipper.

Nagarjuna’s ‘partiality’ in new promo gets fans talking

In one of the recent episodes of ‘Bigg Boss Telugu 5’, Actress Priya had an outburst on VJ Sunny, as he tried to defend his game.

This brought so much negativity to her, and the audience was convinced that the host Nagarjuna would school her for her bad behaviour at the Bigg Boss house.

The latest promo released features Nagarjuna hosting Saturday’s episode.

The promo hints at the host’s partial judgment, as he makes fun of VJ Sunny, instead of schooling actress Priya for her rude behaviour. Well, Nagarjuna is known for his seriousness when the housemates treat others in that tone, but this time, he fails to do so with Priya.

The viewers who got a hint at the episode, are upset, thinking that the host is taking Priya’s side by not addressing the real issue.

“Priya literally provoked Sunny all the while last week. As expected, women can yell at men. But, this host is okay if women foul-mouth about men”, one of the replies on Twitter reads.

“Sunny had undergone so much harassment. But, Nagarjuna is making fun of him without even being serious”, another tweet reads.

Actress Priya had yelled at Sunny, and warned him that she would break his mouth multiple times during the task. Nagarjuna, sliding off this matter is not well appreciated by the audience.

Twitter adds one-click ‘Revue newsletter’ signup buttons to tweets

Micro-blogging site Twitter is rolling out a way for people to sign up to ‘Revue newsletters’ directly from tweets.

According to Engadget, when someone shares their Revue newsletter, the tweet will include a subscribe button.

If someone clicks a link to a specific newsletter issue, they will see an option to subscribe when they return to their Twitter feed.

The feature is live on the web now, and it is coming to iOS and Android soon.

In addition, if your Twitter account is linked to an email address, you can sign up to receive newsletter updates with a single click. You will not need to confirm your subscription through your email inbox, the report said.

The update should make it easier for people to convert Twitter followers into newsletter subscribers.

It is a big advantage for Revue over the likes of Substack and other newsletter services since writers on those platforms have to guide potential subscribers through a slightly longer signup process, the report added.

Twitter recently added Revue newsletter signup buttons to profiles on the web, iOS and Android. The company bought Revue in January as the newsletter ecosystem continued to pick up steam.

Monsoon 2021 expected to rescue India’s agriculture in FY22

0

The recently-concluded normal monsoon season will provide a much-needed cushion to both India’s agriculture and inflation in 2021-22, said India Ratings & Research (Ind-Ra) in a report.

According to the report, the arrival of the new kharif output in the market, along with a cut in the import duties for edible oils, will help in keeping food inflation benign.

However, the agency expects the retail prices of edible oils to stay elevated as nearly 56 per cent of the domestic demand is met by imports.

“Thus, Ind-Ra expects the average retail inflation for 2021-22 to remain under 6 per cent,” the report said.

In 2021, the country witnessed 99 per cent of its long period average (LPA) rainfall in the monsoon season of June-September, although there were significant variations across months and different regions.

The rainfall for the country as a whole was 110 per cent of LPA in June; 93 per cent in July; 76 per cent in August and 135 per cent in September.

Region wise, East and Northeast India’ and Northwest India’ received lower rainfall, whereas Central India’ and South Peninsula India’ received higher than the normal rainfall during the monsoon period.

Notably, the acreage data, on October 1, 2021, showed a record kharif sowing- reaching 112.2 million hectares.

Among the major kharif crops, the acreage of rice and pulses was higher Y-o-Y whereas the sown area for oilseeds and coarse cereals was lower by 1.5 per cent and 2.7 per cent respectively.

“Overall, the sowing in the current kharif season has been satisfactory, despite spatial and temporal fluctuations in the rains in the country.”

“As a result, the first advance estimates for kharif food grains production in 2021-22 are projected to reach to 150.5 million tonne.”

Furthermore, based on the spatial and temporal distribution of 2021 monsoon rainfall, Ind-Ra expects agricultural gross value added (GVA) growth in FY22 to be in the range of 3- 3.5 per cent.

“Although agriculture’s share in the Indian economy has reduced over the years, its relevance stays intact as far as retail inflation is concerned mainly due to the high share of food items in the retail inflation index.”

Apple loses legal battle against Huawei ‘MatePod’ trademark

0

Tech giant Apple has lost a legal battle to block Chinese conglomerate Huawei’s use of the “MatePod” name as its earbuds device.

According to a report in the South China Morning Post, the iPhone maker opposed the Shenzhen-based Huawei’s use of the “MatePod” brand in the earphone category “on the grounds that it was similar to Apple’s own trademarks for the terms Pod, iPod, EarPods and AirPods”.

According to the trademark office of the China National Intellectual Property Administration (CNIPA), Apple argued that Huawei “maliciously copied” its trademarks, “which could have a negative impact on society”.

The Chinese authority, however, did not find Apple’s argument compelling.

The trademark authority said that there was “insufficient evidence” that proved Huawei’s applications to be copies.

As per the report, Huawei has also been granted the MatePod trademark, although, Apple still has the right to file for additional appeals to CNIPA to go back on this decision.

Apple shipped around 72.8 million units of AirPods last year, dominating the market for true wireless headphones with a 31 per cent share, according to Counterpoint Research.

However, the global market for TWS hearables saw tepid QoQ growth in Q2 2021. Apple lost considerable share in both sales volume and value despite big price drops on the AirPods.

According to senior Counterpoint analyst Liz Lee, it is “very possible the AirPods 3 could push overall sales for Apple TWS hearables past 80 million for the year”.

Samsung to set up 1st EV battery plant in US

0

South Korean battery maker Samsung SDI said it will build its first electric vehicle (EV) battery plant in the US with global carmaker Stellantis N.V., joining other local rivals’ moves to tap deeper into the region.

The announcement confirms earlier reports that the two recently signed a contract, which paves the way for Samsung SDI to join its domestic rivals, such as LG Energy Solution and SK On, to produce EV batteries in America.

Under the deal, Samsung SDI and Stellantis will begin producing EV battery cells and modules in the first half of 2025, starting with an annual production capacity of 23 gigawatt hours (GWh) and aiming for 40 Gwh going forward, according to the press release.

No details on the amount of investment and the size of the battery plant were provided, reports Yonhap news agency.

The output from the new plant will be supplied to Stellantis’ North America production lines, the US, Canada and Mexico, and will be installed in the automaker’s plug-in hybrid and EV lineups, the companies said.

The name and exact location of the joint venture have yet to be decided.

It will be Samsung SDI’s first production plant in the US market and its third overseas production base after the ones operating in Hungary and China. It has a domestic plant in the southern city of Ulsan.

The South Korean company aims to secure a stable supply foothold in America ahead of the free trade agreement among the US, Canada and Mexico, which requires carmakers to sell EVs installed with locally produced parts. The trade deal will take effect in July 2025.
