2,000 Amazon workers in NY to seek federal authorisation on union

0

Amazon warehouse workers on Staten Island, the southernmost of New York’s boroughs, have signed a call for unionisation.

The move is a red rag for the retail behemoth having a turnover of $386 billion in 2020.

The organisers said their plan on Monday is to ask federal labour officials to authorise a union vote.

The push is barely 12 miles from Wall Street, to some the heart of global capitalism.

It ratchets up growing unionisation efforts at Amazon, at 950,000 folks, the second-largest private employer in the US after Walmart.

“We intend to fight for higher wages, job security, safer working conditions, more paid time off, better medical leave options, and longer breaks,” Amazon Labor Union (ALU) said on Thursday.

Amazon founder Jeff Bezos unapologetically fought off labour organising.

In April, while Bezos was still in office, 6,000 warehouse workers in Bessemer, Alabama voted (and rejected) the biggest union campaign yet.

This after President Joe Biden came out rather publicly in favour of unionisation.

“Workers in Alabama – and all across America – are voting on whether to organise a union in their workplace. It’s a vitally important choice – one that should be made without intimidation or threats by employers. Every worker should have a free and fair choice to join a union,” Biden had tweeted on March 1, embedding a video statement.

It is unusual for a sitting American President to say this, though Biden was careful not to direct workers to vote in favor of unionisation lest he violate US labour law.

Biden didn’t name Amazon either. Yet no one was in doubt what he meant by directly naming Alabama warehouse workers. He also denounced anti-union efforts, aiming bluntly at Bezos.

Republican Senator Marco Rubio of Florida, had published a stinging op-ed in USA Today on Amazon’s ways. “The days of conservatives being taken for granted by the business community are over,” he wrote.

This led The New Yorker to say: “Amazon’s influence is so vast, touching on issues from wealth and income inequality to antitrust policy, the American relationship with China, the omnipotence of workplace surveillance, and the atomising effect of big business, in its most concentrated and powerful form, on families and communities, that it can scramble ordinary politics. For a moment, at least, it can put Marco Rubio and (Democrat) Stacey Abrams on the same side. Most organising campaigns have a symbolic quality, in which the employer and its workers stand for different models of economic organisation. The fight in Bessemer is different because it is so direct. Amazon isn’t a proxy for the future of the economy, but it’s heart.”

After the win in Alabama, Amazon was accused of stepping outside allowable guidelines and improperly pressurising warehouse workers against unionising.

The election should be redone, a National Labor Relations Board (NLRB) hearing officer said in a non-binding recommendation in August.

“Our employees had a chance to be heard during a noisy time when all types of voices were weighing into the national debate, and at the end of the day, they voted overwhelmingly in favour of a direct connection with their managers and the company,” a company spokesperson countered.

As the Bessemer vote fizzled out, the Staten Island effort began, led by ALU, a new, self-organised worker group.

The group’s president, Chris Smalls, staged a walkout at the start of the pandemic to protest working conditions. He was fired. Amazon said the firing was because Small violated safety guidelines.

NLRB needs to approve workers’ requests for a union vote. Smalls and his team plan to file some 2,000 cards on Monday, signed by Staten Island staff saying they want that.

The push targets four Amazon facilities in the Staten Island cluster, estimated to employ 7,000.

Rules require the organisers to submit signatures from 30 per cent of the workers they seek to represent.

A change of guard from Bezos to Amazon old-timer Andy Stacey in July hasn’t changed the party line one bit.

In a statement on Thursday, Amazon spokesperson Kelly A. Nantel said unions are not “the best answer” for workers… Every day we empower people to find ways to improve their jobs, and when they do that we want to make those changes quickly. That type of continuous improvement is harder to do quickly and nimbly with unions in the middle”.

In Alabama, meanwhile, workers continue to aim for a second chance to vote on unionising. A regional director is weighing whether to schedule a new election.

The International Brotherhood Teamsters has also been targeting Amazon. That includes a push for warehouse workers in Canada.

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin on Friday launched two initiatives in the IT sector aimed at monitoring projects and increasing interaction between the government and industry, a statement from the Chief Minister’s office said.

He launched new web portal ‘e-Munnetram’ that provides the status of more than 200 infrastructure projects, costing around Rs 1 lakh crore, and the IT Nanban project. Both were developed by TN e-governance agency (TNeGA).

The statement said that the e-Munnetram project provides updates on the projects periodically and some details on a monthly basis, including date of agreement, start date, cost estimates, progress of the project on both financial and physical parameters on a monthly basis.

The location data and GIS layers as well as the photographs of the site would be provided periodically and allow the heads of departments to update the progress, the statement said.

WhatsApp violates users’ rights by denying dispute resolution: Centre to Delhi HC

0

The Centre on Friday told the Delhi High Court that WhatsApp has already violated the fundamental rights of users in the country by denying dispute resolution rights while opposing a plea filed by WhatsApp and Facebook against the new IT rules.

Through an affidavit, the Ministry of Electronics and IT stated that the US-based tech giants challenge is not maintainable.

WhatsApp had moved the High Court, challenging the new IT rules on the grounds that they violate the right to privacy and are unconstitutional. Objecting to the new IT rules, WhatsApp claimed that they are forced to ‘track’ the origin of messages received through the network.A

According to reports, the Mark Zuckerberg-owned platform filed the petition on May 25, the last day to comply with the new criteria.

WhatsApp had previously stated that it would not breach encryption because it jeopardises the privacy of its users.

According to the new Information Technology (Intermediary Guidelines and Digital Media Ethics Code) Rules, 2021, it is mandatory for social media intermediaries like Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp to trace chats and make provisions to identify the first originator of the information.

Earlier, WhatsApp had told the Delhi High Court that till the Data Protection Bill comes into force, it would not compel users to opt for its new privacy policy as it has been put on hold. In June, the Delhi High Court refused to stay a notice issued by the Competition Commission of India, asking the platform to furnish certain information in connection with the probe, ordered in March, on the instant messaging app’s new updated privacy policy.

Denmark Open: Sindhu, Verma lose as India’s challenge ends

0

India’s campaign in the Denmark Open BWF World Tour Super 1000 event came to a premature end on Friday with double Olympic medallist PV Sindhu and Sameer Verma losing in the quarter-finals.

Sindhu crashed out to South Korea’s fifth-seeded An Seyoung in the women’s singles quarter-finals while Verma retired with an injury after losing the first game 21-17 against Tommy Sugiarto of Indonesia.

Sindhu, the reigning World Champion, lost in straight games to South Korea’s An Seyoung 11-21, 12-21 in a 30 minutes encounter. the 26-year-old Sindhu, who had won a silver medal in Rio Olympics and followed it up with a bronze in Tokyo five years later, could not impose her game on her tough Korean rival as she conceded an early lead and could not catch up with the Korean.

World No. 7 Sindhu had taken a break after becoming the first Indian woman to win a second medal at the Olympics in Tokyo in August. She was playing her first event after the Olympics. The effect of the big break showed as she could not overcome her Korean opponent, who dominated the forecourt and did not allow Sindhu to play her usual game at the net.

Sindhu tried to change her tactics by trying to push An Saeyoung to the backcourt with high lifts but could not control her strokes and the Korean got the chance to attack her and win points.

In the men’s singles quarter-finals, Verma had made a bright start against Sugiarto and had taken an early lead. But the Indonesian caught up with him and scores went neck-and-neck till 11 after which the Sugiarto surged ahead and went on to win the game at 21-17. Verma could not continue after that and retired.

T20 World Cup: Australia have faith in their all-rounders, says Finch

0

Australia skipper Aaron Finch confirmed the make-up of Australia’s playing eleven ahead of their opening match in Super 12 against South Africa here on Saturday. Though Finch did not reveal the players in the eleven, he gave a rough idea of how the eleven would look with all-rounders Glenn Maxwell, Mitchell Marsh, and Marcus Stoinis set to play among seven batters and four bowlers.

“We’re going with seven batters and four specialist bowlers, including the all-rounders. We’ve got a lot of confidence in the depth of our squad. We’ve got a lot of confidence in Maxwell, Stoinis, and Marsh to be able to bowl in four overs as well just to — just as a chop out. We think that on these wickets in these conditions, that they can do a really good job and be an attacking option as much as anything,” said Finch in the pre-match press conference on Friday.

Finch was supportive of his opening partner David Warner finding form despite registering scores of 0,2, 0, and 1 from two IPL outings as well as warm-up matches in the UAE. “I’m backing Dave’s ability. I’m backing his judgment. I think, if you look at his World Cup history, he’s just bloody good. Would he have liked more runs? Absolutely. Everyone would like more runs all the time. He’s one of the greatest players that Australia has ever produced, and I’ve got no doubts that come Game 1 he’ll be up and firing and ready to go.”

Finch himself has been short of game time after a knee surgery ruled him out of the T20I series against Bangladesh. Speaking about how he feels ahead of the tournament opener, Finch said, “I’m feeling really good. The knee is feeling great. It’s feeling a bit better than what I thought it would at this stage, to be honest. To be able to play those first two warmup games against New Zealand and India was crucial, I think. To get a few in the middle was nice.”

The lack of runs from Finch and Warner means that Australia will have to make the most out of power-play in the tournament, especially when pitches are slow in the UAE. “Even though it’s different surfaces to what the IPL used, we saw the impact that it had. The teams that won the powerplay, that went a long way to winning the game as the wickets deteriorated.”

“I think the wickets first off here in the tournament will start off a little bit better and probably be a little more consistent throughout that 40 overs. As it gets a bit more traffic and the tournament gets a bit deeper, that might slow up and spin a little bit more. The powerplay is going to be crucial, no doubt, for both teams,” concluded Finch.

Google Search adds daily word notifications on Android, iOS

0

After previewing bigger changes in September, Google Search is now getting a notification feature that will help users to “learn a new word every day”.

Acording to 9To5Google, one of Search’s many built-in tools is a dictionary. Over the years, it has expanded to let users see definitions in different contexts/fields and learn how to pronounce with a visual tool, as well as the ability to “Practice” live using a microphone.

The latest capability will send a daily notification to learn new words and “some of the interesting facts behind them”. Those tidbits come from the “Origin” section and “Use over time” graph.

When using the dictionary tool in Search on mobile, entries will show a “bell” icon in the top-right corner. It’s similar to the one found on other Knowledge Panel topics.

The report said that Google is presumably not sending the same word notification to every Search user, but it would be amusing if it did to serve as a global touchpoint.

The mobile notification notes the word and definition, while a tap opens the full Search result.

The feature is available in the Google apps on Android and iOS, as well as the mobile web versions.

Punjab orders probe into Amarinder’s relations with Pak friend Aroosa

The Punjab government on Friday ordered a probe into former Chief Minister Amarinder Singh’s relations with his Pakistani woman friend Aroosa Alam and her relation with the ISI.

Deputy Chief Minister Sukhjinder Randhawa said the government would probe the ISI links of Aroosa Alam.

“Captain Amarinder Singh is now saying that there is a threat from the ISI. We will look into the woman’s connection with it. Captain kept raising drones issue coming from Pakistan for last four-five years,” Randhawa told the media.

“Captain Amarinder Singh kept raising the issue of drones coming over from Pakistan for the last four-and-a-half years. So Captain sahab first raised this issue and later got the BSF deployed in Punjab. So it seems a big plot which needs to be probed,” he said.

Randhawa, who also hold the Home portfolio, added he asked the Punjab Police chief to investigate the allegations.

In political circles, the decision to order probe by the government against its own party’s former Chief Minister is seen as a major embarrassment for Amarinder Singh, who on October 19 announced that he would soon announce the launch of his own political party to serve the interests of the people, including the farmers who’ve been fighting for their rights for over a year now.

The former Chief Minister also said he is hopeful of a seat-sharing arrangement with the BJP for next year’s Assembly elections in the state, if the farmers’ issues are resolved in their interest.

Samantha could simply seek apology rather than filing defamation cases

South India’s most happening actress Samantha Ruth Prabhu, who recently filed defamation cases against a couple of YouTube channels and an individual for streaming malignant content about her, has apparently received a legal blow.

Samantha had filed legal cases, which come under Kukatpally court in Hyderabad. After listening to her side of the case, the court apparently ordered that the actress could simply seek an apology from her opponents, rather than filing defamation cases.

“The actress can seek a word of apology from the content owners of the concerned YouTube channels, individuals and media outlets, rather than filing defamation cases on them,” the court suggested, as per reports.

The court went on to school the actress and apparently indicated that celebrities share personal details on public domain and then file defamation suits.

“In court, everyone is equal before the law. There is no sense of some being high and others being low. We will hear Samantha’s case as per the procedure,” the court concluded.

Samantha’s announcement about her divorce from Naga Chaitanya had invited unwanted comments and speculation about their relationship, and some channels went forward and linked her up with random colleagues.
